Abstract:This book for architects, interior designers, building managers, students, conference organisers looks at first principles to provide the user with the 'tools' to make their own decisions rather than a 'cookbook' approach. It is intended that designs and product information can be taken straight from the manual and inserted into ongoing projects. For the first time the book considers the needs of people with visual, hearing and mental disabilities, who make up the majority of disabled people in the population, alongside those of people with physical mobility disabilities. Practical low cost solutions to retro-fitting existing buildings are discussed, as well as the methods used to assess the suitability of an existing building, and assembling a project to improve access for disabled people. Specific products and designs are illustrated and discussed - with full working technical drawings, and full specification details. These will reduce considerably the research time needed to produce a cost-effective solution that will improve access for disabled people. A perspective of the standards and legislation dealing with access issues in the UK is compared with those in other countries, and the standards mentioned are compared with the realities of practical implementation carried out in 4 years of design in this area.
Investigation Research on the Barrier-Free Facilities in Landscape Architecture——A Case Study of Beijing

Abstract:In order to make the parks become the real civil parks that can meet the demands of various visitors, to promote the building of a barrier-free environment, nine first class main factors and 60 secondary class main factors were built up as the barrier-free environment factor system. Meanwhile, the importance and satisfaction of five different types of parks were surveyed in this paper. The results show that the barrier-free toilets, exits and entrances are the first important factors, and the rest facilities are the most satisfying element among the first class main factors. The antiskid processing is most important, and the barrier-free toilet is most satisfying in the secondary factors. The status quo in the construction of Beijing landscape architecture was summed up, and the direction of development and problems that may be faced in the future construction is discussed.

Abstract:While the significant achievements have been obtained in respect of legislative work on barrier-free facilities,there are still problems with implementation of barrier-free regulations.This paper focuses on the implementation of Barrier-free regulations,and investigates the current situations of barrier-free environment of public buildings based on‘The Regulation of Barrier-free Facilities Construction and Management in Beijing’,the first local regulation related to barrier-free in China.It is found that:(1) The barrier-free environment of new buildings,such as commercial buildings and subway facilities,is better than that of old buildings(2) Ramp way,blind walk way,barrier-free lift devices,and barrier-free lavatory are better built than warning sign,safety armrest,and low-position devices;(3) The regulation is not comprehensive and explicit enough,which leads to no clear criteria to follow during construction and acceptance inspection;The misuse of blind walk way reveals that the public are lack of knowledge and awareness related to the barrier-free environment.The findings in this paper provide precious references to the inspection and implementation of barrier-free regulations.

Abstract:The design of barrier-free facilities is an important part of paying attention to the disadvantaged groups in urban park green space, and it is the concrete embodiment of whether the whole park landscape design follows the general design principle of "creating fair use". By investigating the status quo of accessibility facilities in 11 parks and green Spaces in Huicheng District of Huizhou City, according to the types of facilities and the characteristics of users, the problems in accessibility design are proposed by combining quantitative analysis with subjective analysis. Based on the concept of micro update and upgrading strategy is put forward, which meet the demand of vulnerable groups create the public landscape space of fair use, To explore new ways to improve the green space quality of Huizhou urban parks in the future.

Abstract:The Chinese government has pursued comprehensive ecological conservation and restoration by establishing an ecological barrier system. However, the majority of international research tends to focus on the connectivity between habitats, overlooking the functions that ecological barriers play in ecological conservation and restoration. The existing literature lacks a systematic exploration of the theory and practice of ecological barriers. This study employed the literature analysis tool CiteSpace to present the theoretical and developmental trends in ecological barriers from various perspectives, including research fields, historical evolution, research hotspots, and major research nations. By analyzing the differences in the understanding of ecological barriers between China and other countries, examining the ecological barriers construction history in China, and exploring the types and functions of ecological barriers, this study summarizes the framework of China's ecological barriers construction system as "features–functions–problems." Constructing an ecological barrier system can help achieve ecological conservation and restoration goals in China.

Abstract:The future community construction in Zhejiang Province focuses on the renovation and renewal of the old community, which is an iterative upgrade of the existing community construction and operation. In 1961, WHO proposed The living environment standard of “Safe, Healthy, Comfortable and Convenient”, Singapore New Town Planning and Design set a experience of community construction. Centered on “The People’s Wish for a Good Life”, integrating the new residential development concept of “Innovative, Coordinated, Green, Open and Shared Development”, the future community will explore to solve the practical difficulties such as population agglomeration, industrial supporting and spatial integration. By building a housing system include that basic-need housing, commercial housing, high-grade housing, and equalizing public services, in order to build inclusive future communities. Relying on digital information and other new technologies to enable the effective transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, so as to better support the development of communities. At the same time, the embedded governance of “government, market and society” should be played to make the future community integrate organically into the surrounding areas and become an organic integrated regional whole. Improve the level of basic services in the region, effectively promote the transformation and upgrading of old residential areas, drive the overall development of the region, so that residents can have a happy home that is “Harmony and Order, Green and Civilization, Innovation and Inclusiveness, Joint Contribution and Shared Benefits”.

Abstract:Enhancing urban inclusivity is a crucial task for sustainable urban development. One key challenge is to create seamless and accessible urban space that caters to the mobility needs of people, especially the elderly. Addressing this pressing challenge requires a comprehensive overview of barrier-free facilities (BFFs) configuration within cities. In this study, we propose an integrated framework for assessing the BFFs in Beijing by leveraging open BFFs data and mobile phone data. The proposed framework encompasses considerations of spatial distribution, accessibility, and supply-demand patterns of BFFs. Our findings reveal the significant agglomeration and heterogeneity of BFFs in Beijing, as well as serious spatial and social inequalities. Furthermore, the supply-demand relationship of BBFs in Beijing is relatively good, with 77.8% of supply-demand balanced areas. Overall, our study provides a holistic understanding of the BFFs within Beijing, offering valuable insights for informed decision-making in inclusive city planning and development.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization and the increasing complexity of urban problems, the importance of urban planning system engineering in higher education has become increasingly prominent. However, the current teaching system still faces multiple challenges, such as limitations in teaching content, traditional teaching methods, and an imperfect evaluation feedback mechanism. This study focuses on cultivating high-quality urban planning professionals with innovative thinking and practical abilities. By introducing the concepts of slow-moving system and barrier-free design into the urban planning system engineering curriculum, a series of teaching reform measures have been implemented, including optimizing course content, upgrading teaching methods, and improving the assessment mechanism, to provide new ideas for the modernization of urban and rural planning education.

Abstract:Public accessibility facilities play a vital role in the life and travel of the disabled and the elderly. With the increasing population of the disabled and the elderly, the number and types of barrier-free facilities are relatively insufficient and the construction location is not reasonable in most cities of China. This paper collects the geographic location information of public facilities, relevant units of disabled persons, traffic stations and barrier-free facilities in the "National Barrier-Free Construction Demonstration Zone" of Shanghai; divides a single building into several local areas; extracts eigenvalues from environmental information in the local areas and transforms them into eigenvectors to construct accessibility facilities construction model basing on the geographic information. And after experiment validation, the accuracy of the model reaches more than 95%, and part of the error of the number pf accessibility facilities could be controlled within 0.003. The application of this model can provide guidance and suggestions for the government in the construction of public barrier-free facilities, and improve the rationality of the construction of barrier-free facilities.
