Abstract:The level of urban biodiversity is an important indicator reflecting the level of harmonious coexistence between human and nature, and is of great significance for promoting sustainable urban development. The expansion of cities and their infrastructures has changed the original ecosystem, hydrological condition and surface structure of the land. The accelerating urbanization process has caused serious impacts on biodiversity, and urban biodiversity conservation has become an important and urgent task in urban ecological construction nowadays. Unlike traditional biodiversity research, urban biodiversity conservation is based on the premise of biodiversity conservation, and seeks to use biodiversity scientifically to bring wider economic and social benefits to cities. The current urban biodiversity research results are abundant and multifaceted, but still face key problems such as lack of systematic and holistic evaluation framework and transboundary and multi-scale management. Therefore, this paper reviews the research on urban biodiversity at home and abroad, summarizes the current criteria and methods of urban biodiversity evaluation, and introduces the urban biodiversity enhancement from the perspectives of international cooperation, national policies, urban planning, special conservation, and nature-based solutions from the main challenges of urban biodiversity conservation. The article discusses the pathways of urban biodiversity enhancement from the perspectives of international cooperation, national policies, urban planning, special conservation and nature-based solutions. Finally, the article discusses the concerns and future research directions of urban biodiversity, and proposes policy recommendations for urban biodiversity conservation to provide reference for the preparation of biodiversity conservation plans and urban biodiversity conservation work in different regions, with the aim of promoting urban biodiversity conservation and the harmonious development of human and nature.

Abstract:An overview of research progress of urbanization impacts on plant biodiversity was given. With a worldwide expanding of urbanization,especially in developing countries,effects of urbanization on biodiver-sity are attracting more attention. Urbanization reduces native plant species whilst increases introduced plant species. As for distribution of plant species,richness of native plant decreases along rural,rural-urban fringe and urban gradient. However,richness of introduced plant species increases,which results in increasing of total plant species richness along the same gradient. Urbanization also produces the great influence on plant species composition and makes the dominant species varying along the gradient. The mechanism of urbani-zation affecting plant biodiversity mainly lies on three aspects,i.e.,introduction of exotic species,change of microhabitat,and altering of landscape pattern. Concerning further researches,four main trends will become more and more important: (1) systematical integration of different regions,various methods and multi-disciplines,(2) long-term site monitoring the urban expanding and plant biodiversity changing,(3) re-search on interior mechanism of native plant species’ loss and characteristics’ change,especially the in-ter-actions between the exotic and native plant species,and (4) urban plant biodiversity conservation.

Abstract:The accelerated urbanization process has caused problems such as habitat loss, isolation, and habitat quality decline, resulting in a sharp reduction in the richness and abundance of urban species. Constructing suitable habitat environmental conditions is the most direct and effective way to protect animals. In urban environment, habitat construction can be achieved by integrating species protection and landscape planning, which is also an important manifestation of biodiversity conservation at the ecosystem level. Understanding how to incorporate animal habitats into city plan and design is critical and urban planners would benefit from a review that holistically describes the steps and methods of animal habitat constructions. We conducted a review to highlight the animal habitats space resources and network structures. We synthesized the findings of research studies in the last 20 years to illuminate the investigation, assessment, planning and management of animal habitats. As habitat degradation and fragmentation in anthropogenic environments, our findings suggest city planners should consider ecological background investigation, habitat suitability assessment, habitat planning strategies and animal habitat management as four key steps of mitigation to alleviate these impacts. This study will provide a useful reference to improve animal survival quality and communication. Through this study, the consolidated research can aid in sustainable development and innovation to promote the ecological function of urban green space and the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals.

Abstract:Urban wildlife ecology and conservation is a discipline worldwide in scope. Although some attention was given the subject in the early to mid-1900s, most activity in the field is of more recent origin. Many European countries have active programs and activities, including the United Kingdom-Man and the Biosphere (UK-MAB) Urban Forum and The Wildlife Trusts of England, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's MAB Program, and urban ecology research in Germany and Poland. The Netherlands' concept of “ecological landscapes” introduced a new approach to design of urban open space. Durban, South Africa followed with “D'MOSS,” a metropolitan open space system founded on the principles of island biogeography theory. The park connector network of Singapore combines principles of conservation biology and landscape planning. Urban wildlife programs and activities exist in the United States at the federal, state, and local levels as well as in private conservation organizations. The Wildlife Society established an Urban Affairs and Regional Planning Committee in the mid-1970s that later became the Urban Wildlife Committee and then evolved into the Urban Wildlife Working Group. Urban wildlife research is providing knowledge of wildlife and plant populations and communities in urban areas that hopefully will lead to better understanding and greater sustainability of urban ecosystems.

Abstract:Urban general planning has the typical public management characteristic,and its major function differs in different development phases in history.Currently,against a background of social & economic transformation,the restriction of urban general planning has been an issue of benefit conflict between regions and departments.Generally,the issue includes three aspects:first,the vertical competition engendered by localism and opportunism under power gambling;second,the adverse reaction to excessive horizontal competition;third,the spatial benefits contention between multi-interests bodies in the interior competition.As to the problem of benefit conflict,recently urban general planning should take rural & urban planning as a whole and regional harmonizing as the fundamentality.Our major suggestions are as follows:Firstly,taking the public benefit as the core concept and reforming the planning value system;secondly,reforming the planning system and harmonizing the vertical benefits;thirdly,integrating regional strategic resources and harmonizing the horizontal benefits;fourthly,building up the whole space zoning and establishing regulation mechanism;and finally,optimizing the public goods supply and promoting the equalization of urban and rural public services.

Abstract:This paper discusses the major problems in urban green space system (UGSS) planning at both general and special planning levels in China. At general planning level, the problems of the UGSS are mainly from the ignorance in the characteristics of urban nature spaces and the limitation factors of the urban planning system. Great importance is attached to the green spaces in the built area of city, but the green spaces in surrounding areas of the city is unnoticed. Furthermore, because the area of UGSS planning is strictly limited by the administrative zoning, the green space system loses its integrity and rationality in spatial patterns. The schedules of urban development planning mismatched the paces and progresses of the ecological restoration cycles. At special plan level, the problem of the UGSS in China is that the green spaces quantity was over emphasized but the rationality of their layouts is neglected.. Meanwhile, the requirement of the spatial structures and the green spaces layouts to balance between the urban development and the natural ecological environments is often ignored. With regard to the layouts in the UGSS planning practices, the existing problems are the compromising to the existing land-uses, the ‘filling in’ approach to plan green spaces and an over-emphasis on the layout patterns.

Abstract:Ecological planning is one of the most important tools in realizing city's sustainable development. The ecological planning in China was started in the 1980s, and on the basis of assimilating the existing theoretical and practical experiences from western countries, basically formed a theoretical system in accordance with the Chinese characteristics and acquired a series of practical results. This paper reviewed the research and development processes of China' s ecological planning. It is considered that the study of our ecological planning was derived from the geographical principles of land resources ecological utilization, the ecological principles of complex ecological system theory, and the combination of these two principles. The ecological planning has experienced three research stages, i. e., single-disciplinary exploration, multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective study (including landscape ecology, ecology and urban planning), and interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration research. The ecological planning and the related conceptions, primary principles, main academic points, and representatives at each research stage were summarized, and through the discrimination of the basic conceptions of ecological planning and other related plans, it was pointed out that ecological planning is an general conception which includes land ecological planning, urban ecological planning, and eco-city planning, and the principles and theories of ecological planning should be integrated into, led and restricted the present planning system to promote the city's and regional sustainable development.

Abstract:Nature, diversity, and openness are what we demand from urban green space in the 21st century. Based on the summary of urban green space connotation, types and significance, this paper reviewed the research hotspots of urban green space, i.e., conservation and planning of urban-rural fringe, restoration and preservation of natural areas and indigenous vegetation, ecological restoration and planning of green way, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem structure and services, and management policy. The difference between foreign and domestic urban green space researches and practices were summarized, and some preferential urban green space research aspects in the future were proposed. It was suggested that in China, urban green space strategy should be integrated into urban planning and land use planning.

Abstract:Habitat fragmentation and biological process obstruction are the major threats to the biodiversity in urban areas.In current urban biological conservation planning,there exist some deficiencies e.g.,the species-centered approach pays litile attention to the regional habitat pattern,and the landscape-oriented method lacks the consideration of biological process.Therefore,an integrated approach combining the biological processes and habitat patterns of selected species is hishly advocated by advancing theories in conservation biology,landscape ecology,and landscape planning.Taizhou,a rapid urbanization area with rich biological resources in Zhejiang Province of southeastern China,faces heavy habitat fragmentation and biodiversity loss during the recent dispersed urbanization process and intensive infrastructure construction.This paper cornbined the knowledge of biological processes of indicator species and the design of regional landscape patterns.Two kinds of bird.were selected as indicator species,i.e.,Larus saundersi,a typical migratory bird temporarily feeds in the mud beaches of Taizhou,could be thought of as a type of biological behavior of vertical habitat selection process.and Syrmaticus ellioti,one of the major resident birds of this area,has both vertical habitat selection and local migration behavior.The methods of analyzing landscape suitability and security pattern were employed to distinguish the appropriate habitats of the two indicator species based on vertical and horizontal processes,and finally,a comprehensive biological conservation infrastructure was obtained by ovedaying them,which could provide references for similar urban areas to Taizhou.

Abstract:The construction of ecological networks within the context of urbanization is an effective approach to cope with the challenges of urban biodiversity decline, representing a crucial goal in urban planning and development. However, existing studies often overlook the richness and uniqueness within species communities by homogenizing traits of species in the same class. This study proposes a framework for constructing and optimizing ecological networks focused on differential conservation within the same class. By classifying birds into three groups (specialists of water, forest or urban areas) based on their ecological requirements and urbanization tolerance, we constructed an ecological network tailored to their distinct migratory dispersal patterns. We then identified strategic areas including pinch points, barriers, and breakpoints specific to each bird group. Our findings reveal notable variations in suitable habitat distribution among different bird groups in urban environments. Corridor layouts varied according to habitat preferences and migratory dispersal patterns. Despite these differences, urban built-up areas persist as central hubs for the distribution of suitable habitats for 75% of bird species, with peripheral mountain-plain transition areas constituting 63% of crucial dispersal corridors. This emphasizes the critical role of urban built-up areas in maintaining biodiversity and ecological connectivity. Prioritizing connectivity between central urban areas and distant natural spaces is imperative. Our approach innovatively classifies and constructs networks to identify strategic areas with diverse species-specific attributes, providing valuable spatial information for land planning and guiding solutions to enhance target species. While the primary focus is on bird conservation in Beijing, our framework is broadly applicable to global biodiversity management and green planning under urbanization challenges. Overall, this study offers innovative insights for urban planning development and serves as decision support for prioritizing urban actions.

Abstract:Urban environments are dynamic landscapes shaped by a multitude of factors, including environmental conditions and socio-economic influences. This study systematically investigates how various factors shape urban plant diversity in Haikou City, Hainan Province, China, focusing on 30 key drivers including socio-economic aspects, biophysical conditions, landscape elements, and management practices. Our research methodology involved a comprehensive analysis of these factors' impact on six types of urban plant species: spontaneous, native spontaneous, exotic spontaneous, cultivated, native cultivated, and exotic cultivated. Conducted in urban areas with varying population densities and landscape features, our sampling approach aimed to understand the species' distribution patterns. We discovered significant correlations between plant species diversity and specific environmental and socio-economic variables. Our results indicate that spontaneous species are prevalent in densely populated areas with strong social ties, whereas areas rich in tree and shrub cover see fewer such species. Native cultivated species favor more serene, less urbanized landscapes, while exotic cultivated species are predominantly found in economically affluent areas with diverse vegetation. These findings offer valuable insights for urban planning and biodiversity conservation, emphasizing the need for customized greening strategies that align with local environmental and social contexts. By adopting such tailored approaches, urban planners can more effectively manage landscapes, enrich green spaces, and foster biodiverse, sustainable ecosystems. This research not only enhances our understanding of urban plant biodiversity but also lays the groundwork for future studies and policy-making, promoting harmonious integration of diverse plant life within urban settings.
