Abstract:We have developed a novel and compact six-mirror cavity configuration to combine four multimode laser modules intracavity for energy scaling. Compared to the conventional 2×N channel scaling schemes, this close-ended six-mirror cavity is simpler, more stable and more practical. Diode-side-pumped rod laser geometry that is appropriate for beam combination is employed in the branch laser module. The characteristics of the output energy and the beam quality are investigated experimentally. With the six-mirror cavity, the output brightness is significantly improved compared to single F–P cavity laser. A single beam output exceeding 453 mJ with 165 μs duration is achieved, with the combination efficiency of 90.7%.

Abstract:Beam combination is an effective geometry which can improve laser output power with good beam quality. A new and practical four-mirror cavity configuration is presented to combine the beams intracavity. This close-ended scheme is good at withstanding environmental perturbations and is easier to realize the alignment than the conventional Michelson cavity. The length of each arm can be rather short which makes the cavity more compact in practical implement. With this four-mirror cavity, the output brightness is efficiently improved compared to single F-P cavity laser by combining two Nd:YAG lasers. A single beam output exceeding 3.3 W is achieved in this composite cavity, which has the potential for scaling to much higher output power with high brightness.

Abstract:We present a novel four-mirror cavity with two active gains to combine power intracavity and also give a detailed theoretical analysis of the combined gain. By using the effective field method, the four-mirror cavity with two gain media can be regarded as a linear resonator with one effective combined gain (ECC), and we procure a theoretical model of the ECG and deduce its exact analytical expression. When the two branch gains are close to each other, the combined gain can be reduced to their product, and the simplified presentation of ECG has been demonstrated. The combined output power which directly reflects the small signal ECG of the four-mirror cavity is studied experimentally, and the results are in good agreement with the theoretical ones.

Abstract:A simple physical picture for producing the new beam CO2 lasers was put forward, and based on which, a new beam intracavity CO2 laser was successfully developed recently with a cavity length of 500mm, a discharge-region-length of 420mm, output of 17W, and its equivalent beam-quality-factor M2=0.26. If the concept on the ��equivalent M2�� is reasonable, then it becomes possible to make the CO2 lasers with their output beyond the limitation set by the diffraction restriction.

Abstract:Very high-average optical enhancement cavities (OECs) are being used both in fundamental and applied research. The most demanding applications require stable megawatt level average power of infrared picosecond pulses with repetition rates of several tens of MHz. Toward reaching this goal, we report on the achievement of 710 kW of stable average power in a two-mirror hemispherical optical enhancement cavity. This result further improves the state of the art. So far, in compact high-power systems, cavity geometry optimization has been driven by the need to limit the deformation of radii of curvatures due to thermal effects. Here we explicitly demonstrate that thermal lensing must be accounted for, too, and that it can be used to assess the absorption of coatings. Experimental observations are matched with a simple model of thermal effects in the mirror's coatings. These results set a further stage for designing an optimized optical system for several applications where very high-average power enhancement cavities are expected to be operated.

Abstract:Optical cavity always acts as a valuable tool for basic research and diagnostics. By using a steady-state microbunching (SSMB) technique, a cavity for a new light source is created. We present a continuous-wave optical cavity relying on a steady-state microbunching (SSMB) mechanism for a new light source. A beam evolution model is established to calculate the final beam size under different power with the help of ABCD matrics and Winkler model. A planar four-mirror cavity has been developed using a continuous-wave laser injection system with minimum phase noise. The modal instability effect is found as a result of the surface thermoelastic deformation of cavity mirrors. To eliminate the high-order modes, a pair of D-shaped mirrors are used and 30 kW intra-cavity power is obtained.

Abstract:We present a highly stable, high-power bow-tie optical enhancement cavity (OEC) for providing modulating electric fields in steady-state microbunching (SSMB) experiments. The goals include an intra-cavity circulating power of up to 1 MW; a laser beam waist with a radius of several hundred micrometers; high optical and mechanical stability; and the OEC will be coupled with an electronic storage ring. The design and simulation results of the setup are presented, including optical parameters, mechanical design, and thermal simulation. The planar four-mirror (4M) bow-tie cavity is selected to integrate with the electron storage ring, consisting of two concave focusing mirrors and two plane mirrors. The round-trip length of the cavity is 9.317 m, corresponding to an FSR of 32.177 MHz. The cavity round-trip loss is 226 ppm, with an ideal cavity gain of 14,096 and a finesse of 27,800. The mirror surface thermoelastic deformation and cavity parameters at high circulating power are described by Winkler model and thermal effect simulation tools. Although this design is oriented toward SSMB, such highly stable, high-power OECs are also desirable in various fields.

Abstract:This paper describes a quasi-optical resonator complied with diffraction grating and 3-mirror reflector, which has considerable advantages as follow: ring beam enable more high beam current to transmit steadily and to be taken shape easily; three-mirror cavity has a small loss. Theoretical analyses and numerical simulation results indicate that coherent radiation can be achieved by beam energy of 50 kV and beam current of 39.4 A, and we have at 97.2 GHz, peak value are 8 kW Smith-Purcell output.

Abstract:We propose a procedure for the significant enhancement of the strong coupling rate between photons in an optical cavity and a single quantum emitter, such as an atom, quantum dot or trapped ion. We show that specially designed, non-spherical mirrors can lead to cavity eigenmodes that exhibit a large field enhancement at the center of the cavity while inducing significantly less beam divergence, and therefore smaller round trip losses and higher cooperativity, than can be achieved by operating a spherical-mirror cavity in the near-concentric regime. We verify our designs using mode matching theory and discuss their robustness relative to different kinds of manufacturing deviations.

Abstract:A 0.1THz pencil beam klystron amplifier with three extended interaction cavities has been presented in this manuscript. A novel dual-beam tunnel (DBT) cavity is adopted to replace the single-beam tunnel (SBT) cavity benefiting the improvement of the driven beam current. The electromagnetic features of both cavities have been analyzed and compared. Then, the output power and electronic efficiency of both the high-frequency circuits employing the single-beam tunnel and novel dual-beam tunnel cavities are verified by PIC simulation. Driven by 5 mW RF signal, the output power of the single-beam tunnel circuit reaches 144W at 100GHz, and the dual-beam tunnel mode enhances to 450W when the electron beam is 17.3kV and 0.28A per tunnel. The simulation results prove that the novel dual-beam tunnel design, compatible with a higher driven current, can help to increase the electronic efficiency to 4.64% from the 2.97% of the single-beam tunnel.

Abstract:<p>We develop a scalable multi-stage beam combining system based on the superposition of four tapered diode laser amplifiers using the coherent polarization beam combining. By employing the combination of master oscillator power amplification and active phase control of each amplifier, a stable output power of 6.9 W is obtained with a nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. The combining efficiency is 72%, and the brightness is improved by a factor of 3.3 compared to that of a single amplifier. Our system provides a new solution to obtain a high-coherence and high-brightness diode laser beam.</p>

Abstract:A new method of harmonic beam coaxial combination (HBCC) from two intra-cavity frequency doubling branches was demonstrated. Firstly, two identical nanosecond (ns) 532 nm green lasers with high power and good beam quality were created. Each green laser was constructed of an intra-cavity frequency doubling branch based on a laser diode (LD) end-pumped acousto-optical (AO) Q-switched 1064 nm Nd:YVO4 laser in a LiB3O5 (LBO) nonlinear crystal. Each branch generated about 45 W green output at a 50 kHz pulse repetition rate (PRR) with diffraction limited beam quality. The first green beam was injected into the LBO crystal in the second branch, and the pulses from the two branches did not exist simultaneously. Then, the HBCC was performed. Consequently, an 83 W combined green output power at 532 nm was obtained with a combination efficiency of 92.2%. The PRR of the HBCC pulse was doubled to be 100 kHz, with a pulse width of about 22 ns, corresponding to a single pulse energy of 0.83 mJ and a peak power of 37.73 kW. The combined beam quality factor was measured to be M x2 = 1.80 in the x direction and M y2 = 1.71 in the y direction, respectively. Moreover, many more beams could also be combined with this method for further scaling the green power.

Abstract:The efficiency of the RF power sources is one of the major concerns in the large-scale high-energy accelerator projects such as the future circular collider (FCC) and the compact linear collider (CLIC). The new bunching method, the core stabilization method (CSM), can achieve high efficiency in the case of shorter interactive length. The multibeam klystron (MBK) could accommodate high RF power with a low operating voltage, compared with a single-beam klystron. This article presents the design and simulation of a 650-MHz, 0.9-MW continuous wave (CW) CSM MBK. The detailed design of a six-beam optics system is also elaborated in this article. The performance of such a device was validated by the 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC)-code computer simulation. With an operating voltage of 50 kV, PIC simulation predicts an efficiency of 81.8%.

Abstract:A low-cost, compact intracavity deformable mirror (DM) consisting of a mirror unit, a heater unit, a cooler unit and a base unit is proposed to compensate the thermal distortion of a linear resonator passively Q-switched (PQS) laser in this paper. The thermal distortion of the PQS laser is measured using the active deflectometry method. Simulation results indicate that the surface shape of the DM (DMSS) matches well with the measured thermal distortion at the given pumping current. Experiment results verify that the PQS laser with the designed DM could achieve high output power and good beam quality at high pumping currents, as the DM prominently compensates the thermal distortion in the laser.

Abstract:A new kind of ECRM with a multi-mirror quasi-optical cavity is proposed and analysed. The new type of cavity used in this ECRM is studied in the first part of this paper. It is shown that this cavity is free from mode concentration and has a structure suitable for developing high-power short-millimetre and submillimetre ECRM. The analytical solutions of the cavity fields have been found and the experimental results are in satisfactory agreement with theory. The non-linear numerical analysis of this new ECRM is given in the second part of this paper. Employing the above-mentioned cavity and a hollow electron beam with large radius, this ECRM can operate even at the submillimetre waveband effectively and possesses great potential for increased output power. This ECRM is easy to manufacture because of its lack of stringent requirements on the electron beam and its simple construction.
Beam Profile Improvement of a LD Array by an External Cavity with Photorefractive Phase Conjugate Mirror

Abstract:A technique for improvement of the beam profile of a LD array by an external cavity with self pumped photorefractive phase conjugate mirror is presented. A spatially filtered part of the far field from the negative lobe of a gain guided LD array is directly coupled to a phase conjugating rhodium doped barium titanate crystal. The positive lobe power increases remarkably at low drive current. Beam energy increases significantly at emission angle centered close to 2.3°at different drive current. A large fraction of power in the positive lobe is contained in a Gaussian spike of width 1.34× diffraction limit (FWHM of the far field is 0.75°).
Compact Optical Multipass Matrix System Design Based on Slicer Mirrors.

Abstract:High path-to-volume ratio (PVR) and low-aberration-output beams are the two main criteria to assess the performance of multipass absorption cells. However, no substantial progress has been reported for large-numerical-aperture-coupled multipass cells, which is due to the accumulated aberrations caused by a large number of off-axis reflections. Based on Chernin's design, in this study, we modified Chernin's four-objective multipass matrix cell by using slicer mirrors to eliminate alignment difficulty and decrease the system volume. A generalized design routine based on user requirements is also proposed. Based on the automatic modeling tool package (Pyzdde) connected with Zemax and boundary conditions of the parameters selection proposed, a low-aberration-output beam and a high PVR are easily obtained compared with other multipass cells schemes. In one demo design, 108 passes (5×7 matrix spots) in a base length of 300 mm are presented. The PVR and peak-to-valley value wavefront errors are 67.5 m/L and 0.92 μm, respectively. Finally, a tolerance analysis of this optical multipass system is also presented. This work may provide better broadband optical absorption cells in terms of response time and a better detection sensitivity in versatile applications.

Abstract:The applications of two beams in klystrons permit a significant increase in the output power at millimeter-wave frequencies. The two-beam loading on input cavity designed to operate in TM 13 -2π mode is analyzed and optimized to achieve optimal matching condition for certain power of an input signal. To demonstrate the matching condition, particle-in-cell simulations are conducted to calculate the relationship between the saturated gap voltage and frequency of the input signal as a function of the total perveance. Simulation results show that over 99 % of the input RF power can be absorbed by the designed input cavity when the resonant driving frequency is around 35 GHz and the total perveance is 0.539 µP.

Abstract:The two-stage (TS) multibeam klystron (MBK) technology has recently attracted significant research attention due to its compactness and high-efficiency (HE) performance. However, there is still a lack of scientific research on the beam optics for such microwave power sources integrated with a postacceleration (PA) gap. In this article, a comprehensive optics study based on the newly developed 2-D optics code CGUN is conducted for the first time to demonstrate the most critical steps in the optics design process, by adopting the 400-MHz TS MBK for the future circular collider (FCC) as an example. Two specific challenges arise in this TS MBK, which are studied in this article, and solutions are given. First, due to the combination of slow electrons, impedance change from individual beamtubes into common volume, and the mild decay of the magnetic field, there are possible reflected electrons at the collector entrance. This requires an increase in the beam voltage to 80 kV, beyond the requirements from considering the output gap alone, as well as tighter control on bouncing electrons. The beam scalloping is also found to be highly sensitive to the position of the PA gap and magnetic field, which later demonstrates that large gap length and magnetic field are required. Final all-in-one particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of this klystron equipped with this special optics design demonstrate that the specification of 1.2-MW continuous wave (CW) power is practically attainable with an efficiency of 77.5% and without the presence of reflected electrons at any point in the whole circuit.

Abstract:Coherent beam combining (CBC) of cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) based on an active phase controller is proposed and demonstrated. Experimentally, two pieces of spatially variant wave plates (S-wave plate) were employed as vector mode convertors for two individual 1064-nm fiber amplifier channels. When the system was in a closed loop, a combined output power of 10 W and a CBC efficiency of higher than 94% were achieved, for both TM01 (radially polarized) mode and TE01 (azimuthally polarized) mode cases. Moreover, the laser system showed a high vector mode purity, which was measured to be ∼97.4% (TM01) and ∼97.3% (TE01). To the best of knowledge, this could possibly be the first demonstration of CBC of CVBs, which paves the way for power scaling of CVBs.
