From Environmental History to the Written History of Environment:a Compre hension of the Studies of Environmental History

Abstract:There are three kinds of research on environment, namely, the history of environ ment as the study of natural history, the history of environment as the study of social history, and the environmental history as the study of relationship betw een human being and nature. There are differences as well as similarities betwee n the environmental history and the history of environment, and the differences are worthy of notice. The knowledge of human being distinguishes environment his tory from the first kind of research, while that of the nature distinguishes it from the second kind of research. So, when we probe into the process of inter-in fluence between human being and nature, we will reread history and human affairs from the special perspective of the interactions of human being and nature. Fro m this, we can understand what we can do and what we cannot do in the research o f environmental history, and grasp its inner limits and features of knowledge. I t is a new era when the realities of society that foster the rise of environment al history. The research on environmental history embodies not only important th eoretical values but also clearly practical significances.
