The Evolution of Chinese Social History Research

Abstract:The Chinese social history research, which started from mid-1980s, has had a profound effect. Over the past three decades, the research on"social history"developed a lot, and divided into regional social history and social culture history. The"new social history"that emerged in the 1990s was originally intended to break through the old framework and create a new stage, but it gradually became self-contained over time, with the two fields of"concept history"and"new historiography"being its target. In the late 1990s, historical anthropology increasingly developed, eliminate the stale and establish the fresh research contents and principles, and have critical influence on the social history research from Southern to Northern China. Social history, new social history and historical anthropology are three interrelated and discrepant coordinates. They emerged successively, guiding the trend of historical research in the past three decades, but there are also numerous problems worth investigating.
