Abstract:Service Overlay Network (SON) is a kind of overlay networks which provides end-to-end QoS guarantees in the Internet. Without requiring significant changes to the underlying network infrastructure, SON deploys the nodes in the Internet and purchases the bandwidth from ISPs to support QoS application service for users. The deployment of a SON can be a capital-intensive investment, including the overlay nodes' placement and purchasing the bandwidth from ISPs. Topology design with minimizing the SON installation cost and satisfying users' requirement is important for SON study. The problem for SON topology design is NP-hard. The algorithms of earlier researches on SON topology design are too poor efficiency to apply to the large scale network. In this paper we propose a linear programming model based on multi-commodity flow to solve the problem for large scale SON construction. We validate the effectiveness of our algorithm through simulation.

Abstract:Exact network topology is very important to failure detection and performance analysis in network management.By researching,synthesizing and improving present network topology discovery algorithm,the paper proposes a complete and general algorithm.Especially,this algorithm improves a lot in finding physical topology and has extensive adaptive capacity.It can completely and exactly discover all layer-3 devices,layer-2 devices,subnets and hosts in the network and link relationship between them when there exist layer-3 switches and multi VLANs in the network.

Abstract:There are many tools used in topology discovery of multi-layer networks, such as Ping tests IP connectivity, Traceroute discovers routers, DNS provides mapping between IP address and host names. ARP keeps MAC and IP address in a LAN and maps IP to MAC. Pay attention to discovering of data-link layer equipments and hosts for small networks, and then attention to network layer for large networks as well as discover routers and subnets. Topology discovery of extra-large networks need go through many heterogeneous networks and management domains. Discovery algorithms usually go from high layer (IP layer) to low layer (data-link layer). Topology discovery algorithms are that port connectivity is accounted by address transmitting table, spanning tree and flux of port.

Abstract:This paper at first introduces several kinds of centralized automatic discovery algorithms for network topology, which include utilizing SNMP protocol to visit MIB (management information base) to construct network topology and building network topology based on OSPF or RIP protocol and so on. Next, it gives detailed analysis on those implementation techniques based on the information of MIB which is got through SNMP protocol. The paper also gives some comparison of all the techniques above. Finally, it proposes a kind of realization model of distributed network topology discovery algorithm.

Abstract:Traditional topology discovering algorithms are based on SNMP, which is restricted by deployment and authorization. This paper discusses the architecture and some key techniques in constructing a topology discovering system based on ICMP. This system is developed targeted at campus network. The results of experimentation are presented on a map. It shows that the methods and discovery principles taken by the topology discovering system are feasible and general.

Abstract:Internet consists of many autonomous systems and the interconnection of the ASes reflect the macrostructure of the Internet.Research on the interconnection among ASes can help analyze the characteristics of the network.This paper focuses on the discovery of AS-level Internet topology.It implements an Internet topology discovery system which analyzes BGP tables to get the AS-level topology then display it directly.By analyzing degree distribution properties in the topology,the inherent power-law distribution property of the derived topology can be seen.

Abstract:Network topology has a critical effect on its reliability. Due to the complexity of networks, how to design a more reliable network topology is one of the fascinating and significant challenges. In this paper, inspired by the multi-scale model of biological systems which range from gene to individual cells, and up to the individual organism, we provide a novel method to design a reliable topology of large-scale networks. By means of fractal theory and its application in complex networks, a network topology can be described as consisting of the superposition of basic units, called fractal-cells, which are made up of several components and their connections. Based on this fractal-cell structure, we find that a fractal-cell network has structural similarity with its primitive structure, and then develop a method to build a reliable topology which is generated from a primitive ring structure. Numerical simulation compared with the existing methods and performing on real networks show that our proposed method is effective.

Abstract:In this paper, we present two novel algorithms, one for discovery logical topology, the other one for discovering physical topology in heterogeneous IP networks. The algorithm for logical network, which adopt heurism\greedy algorithms, can be applied to large scale IP network. For the algorithm can self deduce IP addresses, adjust the search domain, it has strong adaptabilities. Another novel algorithm is presented for physical topology which includes switches, hosts and hubs. At the same time, a new data structure named Treelike-Graphics for topology discovery is presented with precise mathematic definition, relationship set and proprietary operation on this data structure. The algorithm, which we present in this paper, does no base on the STP protocol to get the information of topology. So, there are few preconditions to the algorithm. We have implemented the algorithm presented in this paper in Perl in Tsinghua University own research network. The experimental results clearly validate our algorithm, demonstrating that our algorithm can consistently discover the accurate physical network topology with reasonably small running-time requirements.

Abstract:In the past five years, hosts on the Internet have multiplied more than five times, and along with the network's rapid expansion, more and more attention is paid to the challenging task of studying the topology characteristics of Internet infrastructure. Based on the features of Internet topology discovery and practical experience, we present a three-level distributed architecture for Internet router-level routing topology discovering system. We employ an integrated framework for the deployment of the system. We are examining, from a macroscopic point of view, what architecture is appropriate for this-like system, with an emphasis placed on the flexibility in practical work. The architecture enjoys the advantages of a clear train of thought and high modularization. Experiments show that this architecture has an instructive meaning for the development, deployment, and maintenance of Internet topology discovering system.
