Abstract:Lachlan observed that any nonzero d.c.e. degree bounds a nonzero c.e. degree. In this paper, we study the c.e. predecessors of d.c.e. degrees, and prove that given a nonzero d.c.e. degree a, there is a c.e. degree b below a and a high d.c.e. degree d > b such that b bounds all the c.e. degrees below d. This result gives a unified approach to some seemingly unrelated results. In particular, it has the following two known theorems as corollaries: (1) there is a low c.e. degree isolating a high d.c.e. degree [S. Ishmukhametov, G. Wu, Isolation and the high/low hierarchy, Arch. Math. Logic 41 (2002) 259-266]; (2) there is a high d.c.e. degree bounding no minimal pairs [C.T Chong, A. Abstract:We prove that there is no maximal low d.c.e degree. IntroductionA natural extension of the notion of a computably enumerable (c.e.) set is that of a d.c.e.set which is a set obtained as the difference of two c.e. sets A = W -V .Equivalently, a d.c.e set A is a set for which there exists a computable function f (x, s) so that A(x) = lim s f (x, s), f (x, 0) = 0, and ∀x|{s, f (x, s) = f (x, s + 1)}| ≤ 2. As well as being interesting in their own right, the d.c.e.Turing degrees can be studied both to give insight into the c.e. Turing degrees and into the 0 2 degrees.The investigation of the present paper can be viewed as contributing to all three of these goals.The uppersemilattice of the d.c.e.degrees is not elementarily equivalent to that of the c.e. degrees by Arslanov [1] and Downey [5].Perhaps the most striking difference between the d.c.e.degrees and the c.e. degrees comes from the following two theorems.Theorem 1.1 (Sacks [9]) The c.e. degrees are dense.Theorem 1.2 (Cooper, Harrington, Lachlan, Lempp, Soare [4]) The d.c.e.degrees are not dense.Indeed, there is a maximal d.c.e.degree a.That is, a < 0 ′ , and there are no d.c.e.degrees b with a < b < 0 ′ .Also notice that density properties allow us to compare the d.c.e.degrees and the 0 2 degrees.By an unpublished result of Lachlan, there are no minimal d.c.e.degrees, yet Sacks constructed a minimal 0 2 degree.Actually there is a very interesting theme here that "toward 0" the d.c.e.degrees are like the c.e.

Abstract:In this paper, we first prove that there exist computably enumerable (c.e.) degrees a and b such that ${\bf a\not\leq b}$, and for any c.e. degree u, if ${\bf u\leq a}$ and u is cappable, then ${\bf u\leq b}$, so refuting a conjecture of Lempp (in Slaman [1996]); secondly, we prove that: (A. Li and D. Wang) there is no uniform construction to build nonzero cappable degree below a nonzero c.e. degree, that is, there is no computable function $f$ such that for all $e\in\omega,$ (i) $W_{f(e)}\leq_{\rm T}W_e$, (ii) $W_{f(e)}$ has a cappable degree, and (iii) $W_{f(e)}\not\leq_{\rm T}\emptyset$ unless $W_e\leq_{\rm T}\emptyset.$

Abstract:The degree-based entropy of a graph is defined as the Shannon entropy based on the information functional that associates the vertices of the graph with the corresponding degrees. In this paper, we study extremal problems of finding the graphs attaining the minimum degree-based graph entropy among graphs and bipartite graphs with a given number of vertices and edges. We characterize the unique extremal graph achieving the minimum value among graphs with a given number of vertices and edges and present a lower bound for the degree-based entropy of bipartite graphs and characterize all the extremal graphs which achieve the lower bound. This implies the known result due to Cao et al. (2014) that the star attains the minimum value of the degree-based entropy among trees with a given number of vertices.

Abstract:It is shown that for any computably enumerable (c.e.) degree w \mathbf {w} , if w ≠ 0 \mathbf {w\not =0} , then there is a c.e. degree a \mathbf {a} such that ( a ∨ w ) ′ = a = 0 \mathbf {(a\lor w)’} = \mathbf {a}= \mathbf {0} (so a \mathbf {a} is low 2 _2 and a ∨ w \mathbf {a\lor w} is high). It follows from this and previous work of P. Cholak, M. Groszek and T. Slaman that the low and low 2 _2 c.e. degrees are not elementarily equivalent as partial orderings.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that if $A$, $B$ are noncomputable c.e. sets, $A<_{sQ_{1}}B$ and [($B$ is not simple and $A\oplus B\leq _{sQ_{1}}B$) or $B\equiv _{sQ_{1}}B\times \omega $], then there exist infinitely many pairwise $sQ_{1}$-incomparable c.e. sets $\{C_{i}\}_{i\in \omega }$ such that $A<_{sQ_{1}}C_{i}<_{sQ_{1}}B$, for all $i\in \omega $. We also show that there exist infinite collections of $sQ_{1}$-degrees $\{\boldsymbol {a_{i}}\}_{i\in \omega }$ and $\{\boldsymbol {b_{i}}\}_{i\in \omega }$ such that for every $i, j,$ (1) $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {a_{i+1}}$, $\boldsymbol {b_{j+1}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$ and $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$; (2) every c.e set in $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}$ is a maximal set; and (3) every c.e. set in $\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$ is a non-maximal hyperhypersimple set. We prove that a noncomputable c.e. $sQ$-degree contains either only one or infinitely many c.e. $sQ_{1}$-degrees. The $sQ_{1}$-degrees of c.e. cylinders are dense upper semilattice.

Abstract:We say that a computably enumerable (c.e., for short) degree a is cuppable if there is a c.e. degree b not equal 0' such that a boolean OR b = 0'. A c.e. degree a is called low(n)-cuppable, n > 0, if there is a low, c.e. degree 1 such that a boolean OR 1 = 0'. Let LC,, be the set of all low(n)-cuppable c.e. degrees. In this paper, we show that LC1 subset of LC2 subset of or equal to LC3 subset of or equal to (...), so giving a hierarchy for a class of cuppable degrees.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of minimal covers and strong minimal covers in the Weihrauch degrees. We characterize when a problem $f$ is a minimal cover or strong minimal cover of a problem $h$. We show that strong minimal covers only exist in the cone below $\mathsf{id}$ and that the Weihrauch lattice above $\mathsf{id}$ is dense. From this, we conclude that the degree of $\mathsf{id}$ is first-order definable in the Weihrauch degrees and that the first-order theory of the Weihrauch degrees is computably isomorphic to third-order arithmetic.

Abstract:We prove that for any computably enumerable (c.e.) degree c, if it is cappable in the computably enumerable degrees, then there is a d.c.e. degree d such that c∪d=0′ and c∩d=0. Consequently, a computably enumerable degree is cappable if and only if it can be complemented by a nonzero d.c.e. degree. This gives a new characterization of the cappable degrees.

Abstract:We investigate the degree spectra of computable relations on canonically ordered natural numbers and integers . As for , we provide several criteria that fix the degree spectrum of a computable relation to all c.e. or to all degrees; this includes the complete characterization of the degree spectra of so-called computable block functions that have only finitely many types of blocks. Compared to Bazhenov et al. (in: LIPIcs, vol 219, pp 8:1–8:20, 2022), we obtain a more general solution to the problem regarding possible degree spectra on , answering the question whether there are infinitely many such spectra. As for , we prove the following dichotomy result: given an arbitrary computable relation R on , its degree spectrum is either trivial or it contains all c.e. degrees. This result, and the proof techniques required to solve it, extend the analogous theorem for obtained by Wright (Computability 7:349–365, 2018), and provide initial insight to Wright's question whether such a dichotomy holds on computable ill-founded linear orders. This article is an extended version of Bazhenov et al. (in: LIPIcs, vol 219, pp 8:1–8:20, 2022).

Abstract:The Major Sub-degree Problem of A. H. Lachlan (first posed in 1967) has become a long-standing open question concerning the structure of the computably enumerable (c.e.) degrees. Its solution has important implications for Turing definability and for the ongoing programme of fully characterising the theory of the c.e. Turing degrees. A c.e. degree a is a major subdegree of a c.e. degree b > a if for any c.e. degree x, ${{\bf 0' = b \lor x}}$ if and only if ${{\bf 0' = a \lor x}}$ . In this paper, we show that every c.e. degree b ≠ 0 or 0′ has a major sub-degree, answering Lachlan’s question affirmatively.

Abstract:We construct an incomplete 3-c.e. enumeration degree which is maximal among then-c.e. enumeration degrees for everyn with 3≤n≤ω.
