Abstract:We prove that there are strong minimal pairs in the enumeration degrees and that the degrees of the left and right sides of strong minimal pairs include Σ20 degrees, although it is unknown if there is a strong minimal pair in the Σ20 enumeration degrees. We define a stronger type of minimal pair we call a strong super minimal pair, and show that there are none of these in the enumeration degrees, answering a question of Lempp, Slaman and Soskova [1] . We leave open the question of the existence of a super minimal pair in the enumeration degrees.

Abstract:The \textit{minimum positive co-degree} of a non-empty $r$-graph $H$, denoted $\delta_{r-1}^+(H)$, is the largest integer $k$ such that if a set $S \subset V(H)$ of size $r-1$ is contained in at least one $r$-edge of $H$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ $r$-edges of $H$. Motivated by several recent papers which study minimum positive co-degree as a reasonable notion of minimum degree in $r$-graphs, we consider bounds of $\delta_{r-1}^+(H)$ which will guarantee the existence of various spanning subgraphs in $H$. We precisely determine the minimum positive co-degree threshold for Berge Hamiltonian cycles in $r$-graphs, and asymptotically determine the minimum positive co-degree threshold for loose Hamiltonian cycles in $3$-graphs. For all $r$, we also determine up to an additive constant the minimum positive co-degree threshold for perfect matchings.

Abstract:Maximum likelihood estimation is a fundamental computational problem in statistics. In this note, we give a bound for the maximum likelihood degree of algebraic statistical models for discrete data. As usual, such models are identified with special very affine varieties. Using earlier work of Franecki and Kapranov, we prove that the maximum likelihood degree is always less or equal to the signed intersection-cohomology Euler characteristic. We construct counterexamples to a bound in terms of the usual Euler characteristic conjectured by Huh and Sturmfels.

Abstract:For a connected graph $G$ with order $n$, let $e(G)$ be the number of its distinct eigenvalues and $d$ be the diameter. We denote by $m_G(\mu)$ the eigenvalue multiplicity of $\mu$ in $G$. It is well known that $e(G)\geq d+1$, which shows $m_G(\mu)\leq n-d$ for any real number $\mu$. A graph is called $minimal$ if $e(G)= d+1$. In 2013, Wang (\cite{WD}, Linear Algebra Appl.) characterize all minimal graphs with $m_G(0)=n-d$. In 2023, Du et al. (\cite{Du}, Linear Algebra Appl.) characterize all the trees for which there is a real symmetric matrix with nullity $n-d$ and $n-d-1$. In this paper, by applying the star complement theory, we prove that if $G$ is not a path and $m_G(\mu)= n-d$, then $\mu \in \{0,-1\}$. Furthermore, we completely characterize all minimal graphs with $m_G(-1)=n-d$.

Abstract:We prove that there is no maximal low d.c.e degree. IntroductionA natural extension of the notion of a computably enumerable (c.e.) set is that of a d.c.e.set which is a set obtained as the difference of two c.e. sets A = W -V .Equivalently, a d.c.e set A is a set for which there exists a computable function f (x, s) so that A(x) = lim s f (x, s), f (x, 0) = 0, and ∀x|{s, f (x, s) = f (x, s + 1)}| ≤ 2. As well as being interesting in their own right, the d.c.e.Turing degrees can be studied both to give insight into the c.e. Turing degrees and into the 0 2 degrees.The investigation of the present paper can be viewed as contributing to all three of these goals.The uppersemilattice of the d.c.e.degrees is not elementarily equivalent to that of the c.e. degrees by Arslanov [1] and Downey [5].Perhaps the most striking difference between the d.c.e.degrees and the c.e. degrees comes from the following two theorems.Theorem 1.1 (Sacks [9]) The c.e. degrees are dense.Theorem 1.2 (Cooper, Harrington, Lachlan, Lempp, Soare [4]) The d.c.e.degrees are not dense.Indeed, there is a maximal d.c.e.degree a.That is, a < 0 ′ , and there are no d.c.e.degrees b with a < b < 0 ′ .Also notice that density properties allow us to compare the d.c.e.degrees and the 0 2 degrees.By an unpublished result of Lachlan, there are no minimal d.c.e.degrees, yet Sacks constructed a minimal 0 2 degree.Actually there is a very interesting theme here that "toward 0" the d.c.e.degrees are like the c.e.

Abstract:We provide polynomial upper bounds for the minimal sizes of distal cell decompositions in several kinds of distal structures, particularly weakly $o$-minimal and $P$-minimal structures. The bound in general weakly $o$-minimal structures generalizes the vertical cell decomposition for semialgebraic sets, and the bounds for vector spaces in both $o$-minimal and $p$-adic cases are tight. We apply these bounds to Zarankiewicz's problem and sum-product bounds in distal structures.

Abstract:A pure pair of size $t$ in a graph $G$ is a pair $A,B$ of disjoint sets of $t$ vertices such that $A$ is either complete or anticomplete to $B$. It is known that, for every forest $H$, every graph on $n\ge2$ vertices that does not contain $H$ or its complement as an induced subgraph has a pure pair of size $\Omega(n)$; furthermore, this only holds when $H$ or its complement is a forest. In this paper, we look at pure pairs of size $n^{1-c}$, where $0<c<1$. Let $H$ be a graph: does every graph on $n\ge2$ vertices that does not contain $H$ or its complement as an induced subgraph have a pure pair $A,B$ with $|A|,|B|\ge \Omega(|G|^{1-c})$,? The answer is related to the congestion of $H$, the maximum of $1-(|J|-1)/|E(J)|$ over all subgraphs $J$ of $H$ with an edge. (Congestion is nonnegative, and equals zero exactly when $H$ is a forest.) Let $d$ be the smaller of the congestions of $H$ and $\overline{H}$. We show that the answer to the question above is "yes" if $d\le c/(9+15c)$, and "no" if $d>c$.

Extremal results on degree powers in some classes of graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ with degree sequence $(d_1,d_2,\cdots,d_n)$. For an integer $p>1$, let $e_p(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n d^{p}_i$ and let $ex_p(n,H)$ be the maximum value of $e_p(G)$ among all graphs with $n$ vertices that do not contain $H$ as a subgraph (known as $H$-free graphs). Caro and Yuster proposed the problem of determining the exact value of $ex_2(n,C_4)$, where $C_4$ is the cycle of length $4$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a $C_4$-free graph having $n\geq 4$ vertices and $m\leq \lfloor 3(n-1)/2\rfloor$ edges and no isolated vertices, then $e_p(G)\leq e_p(F_n)$, with equality if and only if $G$ is the friendship graph $F_n$. This yields that for $n\geq 4$, $ex_p(n,\mathcal{C}^*)=e_p(F_n)$ and $F_n$ is the unique extremal graph, which is an improved complement of Caro and Yuster's result on $ex_p(n,\mathcal{C}^*)$, where $\mathcal{C}^*$ denotes the family of cycles of even lengths. We also determine the maximum value of $e_p(\cdot)$ among all minimally $t$-(edge)-connected graphs with small $t$ or among all $k$-degenerate graphs, and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs. A key tool in our approach is majorization.

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph without isolated vertices. For a positive integer $k$, a subset $D$ of $V(G)$ is a $k$-distance paired-dominating set if each vertex in $V\setminus {D}$ is within distance $k$ of a vertex in $D$ and the subgraph induced by $D$ contains a perfect matching. In this paper, we give some upper bounds on the 2-distance paired-dominating number in terms of the minimum and maximum degree, girth, and order.

A new asymptotic enumeration technique: the Lovasz Local Lemma

Abstract:Our previous paper applied a lopsided version of the Lovász Local Lemma that allows negative dependency graphs to the space of random injections from an $m$-element set to an $n$-element set. Equivalently, the same story can be told about the space of random matchings in $K_{n,m}$. Now we show how the cited version of the Lovász Local Lemma applies to the space of random matchings in $K_{2n}$. We also prove tight upper bounds that asymptotically match the lower bound given by the Lovász Local Lemma. As a consequence, we give new proofs to results on the enumeration of $d$-regular graphs. The tight upper bounds can be modified to the space of matchings in $K_{n,m}$, where they yield as application asymptotic formulas for permutation and Latin rectangle enumeration problems. The strength of the method is shown by a new result: enumeration of graphs by degree sequence or bipartite degree sequence and girth. As another application, we provide a new proof to the classical probabilistic result of Erd\H os that showed the existence of graphs with arbitrary large girth and chromatic number. If the degree sequence satisfies some mild conditions, almost all graphs with this degree sequence and prescribed girth have high chromatic number.

We also show that there exist infinite collections of $sQ_{1}$-degrees $\{\boldsymbol {a_{i}}\}_{i\in \omega }$ and $\{\boldsymbol {b_{i}}\}_{i\in \omega }$ such that for every $i, j,$ (1) $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {a_{i+1}}$, $\boldsymbol {b_{j+1}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$ and $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$; (2) every c.e set in $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}$ is a maximal set; and (3) every c.e. set in $\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$ is a non-maximal hyperhypersimple set. We prove that a noncomputable c.e. $sQ$-degree contains either only one or infinitely many c.e. $sQ_{1}$-degrees. The $sQ_{1}$-degrees of c.e. cylinders are dense upper semilattice.

Abstract:Bondy and Vince showed that every graph with minimum degree at least three contains two cycles of lengths differing by one or two. We prove the following average degree counterpart that every n ‐vertex graph G with at least 5 2 ( n − 1 ) edges, unless 4 | ( n − 1 ) and every block of G is a clique K 5 , contains two cycles of consecutive even lengths. Our proof is mainly based on structural analysis, and a crucial step which may be of independent interest shows that the same conclusion holds for every 3‐connected graph with at least six vertices. This solves a special case of a conjecture of Verstraëte. The quantitative bound is tight and also provides the optimal extremal number for cycles of length two modulo four.

Abstract:The $\delta$-complement $G_\delta$ of a graph $G$, introduced in 2022 by Pai et al., is a variant of the graph complement, where two vertices are adjacent in $G_\delta$ if and only if they are of the same degree but not adjacent in $G$ or they are of different degrees but adjacent in $G$. In this paper, we provide the Nordhaus-Gaddum-type bounds, in the spirit of Nordhaus and Gaddum (1956), over the maximum degrees, the minimum degrees, the vertex connectivities, and the edge connectivities of a graph and its $\delta$-complement. All bounds are attained except for the upper bounds on the product between the minimum degrees of a graph and its $\delta$-complement, the vertex connectivities of a graph and its $\delta$-complement, and the edge connectivities of a graph and its $\delta$-complement.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following extremal graph theoretic problem: Given an undirected Eulerian graph $G$, which Eulerian orientation minimizes or maximizes the number of arborescences? We solve the minimization for the complete graph $K_n$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$, and for the so-called double graphs, where there are even number of edges between any pair of vertices. In fact, for $K_n$ we prove the following stronger statement. If $T$ is a tournament on $n$ vertices with out-degree sequence $d_1^+,\dots ,d^+_n$, then $$\mathrm{allarb}(T)\geq \frac{1}{n}\left(\prod_{k=1}^n(d^+_k+1)+\prod_{k=1}^nd^+_k\right),$$ where $\mathrm{allarb}(T)$ is the total number of arborescences. Equality holds if and only if $T$ is a locally transitive tournament. We also give an upper bound for the number of arborescences of an Eulerian orientation for an arbitrary graph $G$. This upper bound can be achieved on $K_n$ for infinitely many $n$.

Abstract: In this paper we investigate boundedness and volumes of generalised pairs, and give applications to usual pairs especially to a class of pairs that we call stable log minimal models. Fixing the dimension and a DCC set controlling coefficients, we will show that the set of volumes of all projective generalised lc pairs $(X,B+M)$ under the given data, satisfies the DCC. Futhermore, we will show that in the klt case, the set of such pairs with ample $K_X+B+M$ and fixed volume, forms a bounded family. We prove a result about descent of nef divisors to bounded families. This is the key to proving the above and various other results. We will then apply the above to study projective lc pairs $(X,B)$ with abundant $K_X+B$ of arbitrary Kodaira dimension. In particular, we show that the set of Iitaka volumes of such pairs satisfies DCC under some natural boundedness assumptions on the fibres of the Iitaka fibration. We define stable log minimal models which consist of a projective lc pair $(X,B)$ with semi-ample $K_X+B$ together with a divisor $A\ge 0$ so that $K_X+B+A$ is ample and $A$ does not contain any non-klt centre of $(X,B)$. This is a generalisation of both usual stable pairs of general type and stable log Calabi-Yau pairs. Fixing appropriate invariants we show that stable log minimal models form a bounded family. Then we discuss connection with moduli spaces.

Abstract:This paper surveys some recent results and progress on the extremal prob- lems in a given set consisting of all simple connected graphs with the same graphic degree sequence. In particular, we study and characterize the extremal graphs having the maximum (or minimum) values of graph invariants such as (Laplacian, p-Laplacian, signless Laplacian) spectral radius, the first Dirichlet eigenvalue, the Wiener index, the Harary index, the number of subtrees and the chromatic number etc, in given sets with the same tree, unicyclic, graphic degree sequences. Moreover, some conjectures are included.
