Abstract:The peer-to-peer applications have become the killer applications in information share internet revolution. It is therefore important to analyze and evaluate network topology and its corresponding geometric characteristic of the overlay network. The peer-to-peer systems based on restricted flooding mechanism, typically Gnutella, are still the most popular peer-to-peer systems. Recently a few main peer-to-peer applications, such as BearShare, Limewire and so on, which constructed the new Gnutella network 0.6, are implemented based on Gnutella Protocol version 0.6 that makes much improvement upon version 0.4, while early measurements of peer-to-peer systems largely aimed at the systems built based on version 0.4. The paper develops a new "network crawler" to extract the topology of Gnutella network 0.6, analyze the topology graph, evaluate corresponding static geometric characteristic, and build its network mechanism model, including small-world and power-laws model.

Abstract:Mapping and analyzing the structural properties of P2P overlay network will benefit the further design and development of the P2P network.It seems infeasible to capture a complete and precise snapshot of P2P overlay network due to the variety of P2P protocols and dynamics of the servers.Studying the details of P2P protocols and analyzing the specific P2P overlay network instance becomes an alternative method for this goal.The measured Gnutella network topology is basically taken as an example.The distributed feedback crawling system(called D-Crawler) is presented.The effects of Crawler system parameters on the snapshot accuracy are analyzed.The results show that D-Crawler can achieve accurate and complete topology data of Gnutella overlay network.

Abstract:As a developing P2P system, Gnutella has upgraded its protocol to 0.6, which significantly changed the characteristics of its hosts. However, few previous work has given a wide-scale study to the new version of Gnutella. In addition, various kinds of P2P models are used to evaluate P2P systems or mechanisms, but the reliability of some hypotheses used in the models are not carefully studied or proved. In this paper, we try to remedy this situation by performing a large scaled measurement study on Gnutella with the help of some new crawling approaches. In particular, we characterize Gnutella by its queries, shared files and peer roles. Our measurements show that the assumption that query arrival follows Poisson distribution may not be true in Gnutella and most peers incline to share files of very limited types, even when MP3 files are excluded. We also find that many ultrapeers in Gnutella are not well selected. Statistical data provided in this paper can also be useful for P2P modeling and simulation.

Abstract:Measuring and characterizing the topological properties of peer-to-peer networks will benefit the optimization, management of the P2P systems. It seems infeasible to capture a complete and precise snapshot of P2P overlay networks due to the variety of P2P protocols and dynamics of the servents. Studying the details of P2P protocols and analyzing the specific P2P overlay network instance become an alternative method for this goal. In this paper, the measured Gnutella network topology is basically taken as an example. The architecture and performance of the distributed crawling system (called D-Crawler system) with feedback mechanism is presented. The properties of degree-rank distributions and degree-frequency distributions of the measured topology graphs are analyzed in detail. The small world characteristics for Gnutella network are discussed. The results show that the P2P overlay network topology characters are closely related to the P2P protocols and clients' behaviors. Gnutella network shows different characters in each tier. The top level graphs fit the power law in degree-rank distribution, but follow the Gaussian function in degree-frequency distribution. The bottom level graphs show weak power law in its degree-rank distribution, but are power law in its degree-frequency distribution. Fitting results indicate that power law could fit better for the degree-rank distribution and degree-frequency distribution of bottom level graphs, Gaussian could describe the degree-frequency distribution of the top level graphs. Gnutella overlay network has the small world property, but it is not the scale-free network, its topology may have developed over time following a different set of growth processes from those of the BA (Barabasi-Albert) model.

Abstract:The popularity of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing applications such as Gnutella, Kazaa and eDonkey has created a considerable amount of research interest in P2P architectures. In order to evaluate a P2P network properly, we must take into account the topological properties of the network that have a significant impact on the design and implementation of a P2P system. In this paper, we present a thorough study about the topological properties of Gnutella network, which provides insight into the nature of underlying system, helps us design high performance algorithms and generates more realistic topologies for simulation experiments.

Abstract:In this paper,the Gnutella network is basically taken as an object,the essential characteristics and pivotal protocol are analyzed,and a Gnutella content crawler is designed using Limewire source code.The authors measure the properties of file sharing type,file sharing number,file sharing space,file replica,peer daily online time and peer application layer bandwidth in detail,and carry out statistical analysis for these measured properties.The statistical analysis results show that there is significant correlation between file sharing number and sharing space and there is weak correlation between application layer bandwidth and peer daily online time.Furthermore,a cluster analysis is done according to file sharing number,file sharing space,application layer bandwidth and daily online time.The result shows that the common peers is up to 97 percent of the statistical peers in Gnutella network.

Abstract:This paper conducted systematic research to BitTorrent, and made detailed description about the design and implementation of a crawler for BitTorrent network topology. It analysed and researched BitTorrent network peer distribution characteristics, online peer cycle property, diffusion tracking and the trend of seed numbers by the information that collected through active measurement. Abstract:During recent years, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Content Sharing Networks (CSNs) have intrigued researchers to measure and analyze them for the dominant proportion of P2P traffic volume and wide applications of the sharing platform. However, to the best of our knowledge, most of the measurement tools have not been updated under the current situations of P2P CSNs. In this paper, we develop an enhanced measurement tool named LCrawler with a versatile and cyclic framework during a longest ever measurement on Kad lasting for three years. The continuous experiments and further analysis indicate that LCrawler can obtain complete snapshots of P2P CSNs with a higher efficiency by adopting the optimized and adjustable crawling algorithm and strategy.

Abstract:P2P applications for file-sharing and video streaming have become tremendously popular in recent years, and it is now accounting for a significant share of the total network traffic. As P2P applications nowadays tend to use arbitrary ports to camouflage their communications, traditional methods like port-based identification have become highly inaccurate. In this paper, we propose a measurement system to detect and measure the real-time P2P traffic more reliably. The measurement methodology is based on using application level signatures implemented by netfilter extension as well as packet classifier. We further present the results from a P2P traffic analysis at a campus network, which show that this P2P traffic measurement system can provide the performance and scalability required for practical applications.

Abstract:The peer-distributing protocol was studied based on reverse engineering.Then an edge-filter incremental topology model was proposed to design a dedicated topology crawler called PPTV_Crawler.The crawling performance was analyzed in terms of crawling efficiency and data integrity.By using PPTV_Crawler,PPTV topologic characteristics was measured including the relationship between average peer degree and total users,peer degree distribution and small-world characteristics.Insights obtained in this study would be valuable for deep measurement study of high-dynamic P2P IPTV.

Abstract:Gnutella is one of the basic protocols for P2P software. In this paper, a novel network model based on Gnutella is introduced. The mechanism of this network is based on resource occupancy and search activities of peers. As for the structure, the power-law exponent of in-degree γin≈4.2, the length of the average shortest path 〈l〉=57.74, and the diameter of the network is 156; these topological properties of the proposed structure differ from known results.

Abstract:BitTorrent (BT) is a widely used P2P file-sharing system, and its performance is a hot research topic. It is important to design an efficient BT topology measurement system for BT performance research. Some studies use the BT clients to collect the information of BT topology, which may be incomplete due to their limitation. In this paper, combining the passive and active approaches, we design a BT topology measurement system. We evaluate the peer coverage ratio by comparing the number of nodes achieved by the measurement system with that registered to the tracker. And we evaluate the connection coverage ratio by comparing the connection number extracted from PEX messages with that of BT clients. The results show that the average peer coverage ratio can reach above 95%, which is much higher than that of Torrent, and the connection coverage ratio reaches above 90%. Overall, the performance of our measurement system is better than that of BT clients.

Abstract:Measuring and characterizing peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing systems will benefit the optimization and management of P2P systems.Though there are a lot of measurement studies on BitTorrent almost in every important aspect, few of them focus on the measurement issues and the corresponding solutions, which can strongly influence the accuracy of measurement results.This paper analyzes the key difficulties of measuring BitTorrent and presents a measurement system with combination of active and passive ways, which can handle with the problems well and balance the efficiency and integrity.Then compared to other work, a more complete and representative measurement was performed for nearly two months and several characteristics are concerned: 1) there are diverse content sharing in BitTorrent system, but multimedia files that are larger than 100 MB are the most.2) Distributed Hash Tables has indeed enhanced the ability of peer discovery though there are some pitfalls to be addressed.3) Pieces are distributed uniformly after the early stage and there are few rare pieces.Furthermore, peer arrival rate shows a periodical pattern, which was not well modeled before.Then an improved model is proposed and the experiment results indicate that new model is fitted in with actual measurement results with high accuracy.

Abstract:BitTorrent (BT) is a widely-used peer-to-peer (P2P) application. Most of BT's characteristics (except the topology) have been studied extensively by measurement approaches. In this paper, we deploy a measurement system to examine some performance-related topology properties of BT. Our goal is to provide a measurement view of the real-world BT topologies and to verify the previous estimations via simulations and real-world experiments. We observe that at the steady stage, a BT topology has short distances and low clustering coefficients, and its degree-frequency exhibits a Gaussian-like distribution. These indicate that a BT network is very close to a random network rather than a scale-free network or a small world. The proportion of peers with large download percentages is very high at the steady stage, showing that the swarm is robust from the resource perspective. We also find out that most high-degree peers have a very fast download speed. However, the low Spearman's rank correlation coefficient indicates that there is no strong correlation between the peer connection degree and the download speed. Different from previous results, we find that the diameter of a BT network at the initial stage is small even when 95% of peers use the peer exchange extension.

Abstract:Measuring and characterizing peer-to-peer file-sharing systems will benefit the optimization and management of P2P systems.The designs of current P2P network are getting more complicated,and several operational mechanisms bring about the incompleteness of data or long period in measurement,such as BitTorrent system.To solve the problem,three levels are abstracted from BitTorrent system in the view of measurement in this paper,including index,peer and content.Furthermore,this paper focuses on the difficult problems in every level,and meanwhile a measurement system for BitTorrent is designed.On these bases,a measurement was performed continuously,and the behaviors of peers that contain the evolution of peers and the model of peer arrival are mainly studied.The results demonstrate that the evolution of peers and the arrival of peers follow a strong periodical law.Therefore,an improved model of peer arrival is proposed,which can be fitted well with actual data and perfect the law of peer arrival.
