Abstract:Convenient, rapid, efficient and anonymous characteristic of P2P technology, enables P2P network gathering enormous users very quickly, and P2P traffic has occupied 60~80% bandwidth of Internet. Such giant traffic has formed a threat to the service quality of other Internet application and the security of Internet itself. However, most study about P2P traffic focuses on traffic monitoring and characteristic identifying technique. Rare study analyzes P2P traffic behavior from P2P mechanism itself. This paper construct P2P network queuing model, analyzes the influence of related factors to the load-scale of concrete resource. Main conclusion including, compared with other factors, average degree of node and TTL value is the most key factor to load-scale. Load-scale increases with node quantity, initial number of objected resource and resource’s total quantity, however, when those quantity reach to some critical threshold, the influence of those factors become quite weak to load-scale of resource.

Abstract:How much service performance of searching and transmitting Is provided by P2P network for a concrete resource? How much success ratio and recall ratio of resource's searching of existing P2P network is? Rare research is deepened about those questions. This paper, for unstructured P2P network, construct P2P network queuing model, provide calculating method of service performance of concrete resource, analyze success ratio and recall ratio of resource's searching, by experiment simulation, discuss the influence of resource's popularity, Peer's quantity, initial number of objected resource, Peer's average degree and TTL value of protocol to the searching result of concrete resource. We conclude, during the resource searching process, the number of searching result linearly increases with initial number of objected resource, and exponentially increases with Peer's average degree and TTL value, but decreases nonlinearly with Peer's quantity.
CAPU: enhancing P2P file sharing system with capacity aware topology

Abstract:Measurement works show that the unstructured P2P file sharing systems such as Gnutella face the problem of poor scalability and inefficiency search for unpopular items. In this paper, we propose new mechanisms that greatly enhance the performance of file sharing system. Our work exploits the prevalent heterogeneity of the nodes in existing unstructured networks in terms of capacity to construct a quasi-hierarchical topology-aware topology which achieves approximately optimal system throughput. Based on this overlay topology, we propose proactive file index propagation scheme to facilitate search. We also introduce a two-stage search algorithm integrate probabilistic biased random walk that search for popular items and low-redundant multicast (MPR) searching for rare items, achieving approximately O(1) search efficiency for popular items and receivable search latency for rare items respectively. We evaluate our design through simulations and the results show 3 to 5 orders of magnitude improvement in total system capacity compared to other Gnutella-like system.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer technology has been widely used in Internet information sharing systems, such as Gnutella, eMule. A reasonable dynamic P2P simulation model is very significant towards understanding P2P, especially the emergence characteristic. A model for simulation the dynamics of P2P network from a point of view of complex network is present in the paper. The model recursively adopts a new node or skips out an old node with different probability. In the scale increasing process, the localization of the P2P is achieved by definition of range selection for new nodes. As a result, the characteristics of locally discrete dynamic attraction can be simulated. Experiments show that the power law exponent of normal node degree distribution is approximated to -2.3, which is in accordance with Gnutella and the theoretical value.

Abstract:To address the two most critical issues in P2P file-sharing systems: efficient information discovery and authentic data acquisition, we propose a Gnutella-like file-sharing protocol termed Adaptive Gnutella Protocol (AGP) that not only improves the querying efficiency in a P2P network but also enhances the quality of search results at the same time. The reputation scheme in the proposed AGP evaluates the credibility of peers based on their contributions to P2P services and subsequently clusters nodes together according to their reputation and shared content, essentially transforming the P2P overlay network into a topology with collaborative and reputed nodes as its core. By detecting malicious peers as well as free-riders and eventually pushing them to the edge of the overlay network, our AGP propagates search queries mainly within the core of the topology, accelerating the information discovery process. Furthermore, the clustering of nodes based on authentic and similar content in our AGP also improves the quality of search results. We have implemented the AGP with the PeerSim simulation engine and conducted thorough experiments on diverse network topologies and various mixtures of honest/dishonest nodes to demonstrate improvements in topology transformation, query efficiency, and search quality by our AGP.

Abstract:Currently, peer-to-peer file sharing systems are playing a dominant role in the content distribution over Internet. Therefore understanding the impact of peer-to-peer traffic on large scale networks is significant and instrumental for the design of new systems. In this paper, we focus on Maze, one of most popular P2P systems on CERNET. We perform a systematic characterization of Maze’s [1] traffic impact on CERNET. We investigate the traffic volume and bandwidth on different spatial levels aggregation. According to our log-based analysis, we claim that current P2P systems have much room to improve in reducing backbone network consumption. Locality-aware content delivering mechanism can reduce the traffic on backbone network effectively. Moreover, a system with less free-rider[3] will further reduce the traffic consumption. Thus the designers of P2P system should pay more attention on incentive mechanism to reduce free-rider.

Abstract:The fast-growing traffic of peer-to-peer applications, most notably BitTorrent, is putting unprecedented pressure to Internet service providers. Understanding the peer distribution over the global Internet thus becomes critical toward building new generation of ISP-friendly peer-to-peer systems. There are unfortunately significant scalability and representability challenges in measuring and understanding realworld peer distribution. In this article we demonstrate a novel hybrid measurement methodology that uses the PlanetLab as a distributed probing platform to interact with BitTorrent trackers and peers in the global Internet. Our design achieves fast real-time scanning of genuine online peers; yet we carefully avoid the potential copyright infringement and traffic overhead for PlanetLab. From three months¿ data of over 9 million peers, we identify fundamental issues in conventional traffic locality designs, and also shed new light on re-engineering trackers and reusing historically downloaded data to make BitTorrent a better storage system.

Abstract:Without assuming any knowledge of the underlying physical topology, the conventional P2P mechanisms are designed to randomly choose logical neighbors, causing a serious topology mismatch problem between the P2P overlay network and the underlying physical network. This mismatch problem incurs a great stress in the Internet infrastructure and adversely restraints the performance gains from the various search or routing techniques. In order to alleviate the mismatch problem, reduce the unnecessary traffic and response time, we propose two schemes, namely, location-aware topology matching (LTM) and scalable bipartite overlay (SBO) techniques. Both LTM and SBO achieve the above goals without bringing any noticeable extra overheads. More-over, both techniques are scalable because the P2P over-lay networks are constructed in a fully distributed manner where global knowledge of the network is not necessary. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of LTM and SBO, and compares the performance of these two approaches through simulation studies.

Abstract:The measuring topology data of Gnutella network were analyzed, then cumulative degree distribution function clustering coefficient, average path length and rich-club coefficient of Gnutella network were extracted from analysis result. By introducing fitness, nodes with neighbours limitation and nodes clustering, the FCL (Fitness model with tunable Clustering and neighbours Limitation) model and the algorithm is proposed. Simulation indicated that the model is valid.

Abstract:Distributed search and routing algorithms based on the DHT (distributed hash table) protocol have attracted considerable attention in structured P2P (peer-to-peer) research as a result of favorable properties such as distribution, self-organization, and high scalability. Compared with a traditional C/S (client/server) network, the probability of peers initiating malicious behavior increases dramatically because of their self-governing and dynamic characteristics, which also make it harder to satisfy the peers’ security required by DHT. In this paper, we propose a new secure DHT protocol based on a multidimensional mapping mechanism. This mechanism maps peers to a multidimensional space by dividing the identifiers into groups. Moreover, a series of secure methods and routing algorithms are provided to achieve secure DHT in smaller spaces. Compared with state-of-the-art approaches, the theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the multidimensional mapping mechanism can effectively improve the average success rate of a resource search by inhibiting malicious behavior.

Abstract:Summary form only given. In unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) systems, the stochastic peer connection and peers' randomly joining and leaving a P2P network without any knowledge about underlying physical topology can cause serious topology mismatching between the P2P overlay network and the physical underlying network. Some existing techniques have been proposed to address topology mismatching problem without shrink search scope. However, these techniques involve considerable amount of overhead, and have other disadvantages, such as slow convergence speed and synchronization requirement. To address the limits of existing solutions, we propose a scalable bipartite overlay (SBO) among peers in Gnutella-like systems or among the super-peers in KaZaA-like systems. SBO employs an efficient strategy to reduce optimization overhead by intelligently distributing optimization tasks in different peers. Our evaluations show that the total traffic and response time of the queries can be significantly reduced by optimized SBO without shrinking the search scope.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on data dissemination in unstructured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network overlays. The absence of a structure in unstructured overlays eases the network management, at the cost of non-optimal mechanisms to spread messages in the network. Thus, dissemination schemes must be employed that allow covering a large portion of the network with a high probability (e.g.~gossip based approaches). We identify principal metrics, provide a theoretical model and perform the assessment evaluation using a high performance simulator that is based on a parallel and distributed architecture. A main point of this study is that our simulation model considers implementation technical details, such as the use of caching and Time To Live (TTL) in message dissemination, that are usually neglected in simulations, due to the additional overhead they cause. Outcomes confirm that these technical details have an important influence on the performance of dissemination schemes and that the studied schemes are quite effective to spread information in P2P overlay networks, whatever their topology. Moreover, the practical usage of such dissemination mechanisms requires a fine tuning of many parameters, the choice between different network topologies and the assessment of behaviors such as free riding. All this can be done only using efficient simulation tools to support both the network design phase and, in some cases, at runtime.

Abstract:Most P2P file-sharing systems are unable to create self- organizing communities of similar nodes that provide good services to their members. In this paper, we propose a Gnutella-like file-sharing protocol based on the premise that each peer only creates links with the best counterparts which the peer has discovered in the network. Termed adaptive Gnutella protocol (AGP), our proposal transforms the overlay topology based on a reputation scheme that evaluates the provided services and offers a mechanism that organizes trusted nodes with similar content. We have implemented the AGP protocol using the PeerSim engine and conducted experiments on diverse network topologies. Over time, the network topology improves as every peer locates counterparts with similar content and good reputation. Moreover, malicious nodes are pushed to the edge of the overlay network and are excluded from participating in the AGP search.

Abstract:Grid and P2P are both popular distributed network models nowadays. The grid is a platform to compactly coordinate the distributed resources, while the P2P model assigns an equal position to each peer and allows all the peers to move freely. Because of their different architectures, these two models have their own advantages and limitations, and therefore are used in different applications. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed network model called P2P Grid which hierarchically combines the grid and P2P. The P2P Grid is constructed based on the Globus Toolkit middleware and SW-R2P network topology, in order to absorb their respective advantages, especially in the trust based access control. We also describe the resource location algorithm and peer operation protocols for this SW-R2P based P2P Grid. Finally the simulated experiments show that our P2P Grid model has a great performance not only in efficiency and security, but also in scalability and robustness.

Abstract:This paper presents a performance study of BitTorrent-like P2P systems by modeling, based on extensive measurements and trace analysis. Existing studies on BitTorrent systems are single-torrent based and usually assume the process of request arrivals to a torrent is Poisson-like. However, in reality, most BitTorrent peers participate in multiple torrents and file popularity changes over time. Our study of representative BitTorrent traffic provides insights into the evolution of single-torrent systems and several new findings regarding the limitations of BitTorrent systems: (1) Due to the exponentially decreasing peer arrival rate in a torrent, the service availability of the corresponding file becomes poor quickly, and eventually it is hard to locate and download this file. (2) Client performance in the BitTorrent-like system is unstable, and fluctuates significantly with the changes of the number of online peers. (3) Existing systems could provide unfair services to peers, where a peer with a higher downloading speed tends to download more and upload less. Motivated by the analysis and modeling results, we have further proposed a graph based model to study interactions among multiple torrents. Our model quantitatively demonstrates that inter-torrent collaboration is much more effective than stimulating seeds to serve longer for addressing the service unavailability in BitTorrent systems. An architecture for inter-torrent collaboration under an exchange based instant incentive mechanism is also discussed and evaluated by simulations

Abstract:Clustering coefficient is an important property of network.This article researched clustering coefficients of nodes in Gnutella network,an unstructured P2P network.This article analyzed the distribution of node's clustering coefficient and the clustering-clustering distribution.This article calculated distribution character of node's clustering coefficient by analyzing real Gnutella network topology.Analysis shows that clustering coefficients of nodes in Gnutella network satisfies power-law distribution.High-clustering nodes affects connectivity of Gnutella network and network becomes disconnected by removing high-clustering nodes.Analysis shows that clustering-clustering distribution is increased and Gnutella network is clustering-assortative.But there is no rich-club in Gnutella and all high-clustering nodes distributes uniformly in network.
Taking A Free Ride for Routing Topology Inference in Peer-to-Peer Networks

Abstract:A Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network can boost its performance if peers are provided with underlying network-layer routing topology. The task of inferring the network-layer routing topology and link performance from an end host to a set of other hosts is termed as network tomography, and it normally requires host computers to send probing messages. We design a passive network tomography method that does not requires any probing messages and takes a free ride over data flows in P2P networks. It infers routing topology based on end-to-end delay correlation estimation (DCE) without requiring any synchronization or cooperation from the intermediate routers. We implement and test our method in the real world Internet environment and achieved the accuracy of 92% in topology recovery. We also perform extensive simulation in OMNet++ to evaluate its performance over large scale networks, showing that its topology recovery accuracy is about 95% for large networks.

Abstract:The scalable, low overhead attributes of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Internet protocols and networks lend themselves well to being exploited by criminals to execute a large range of cybercrimes. The types of crimes aided by P2P technology include copyright infringement, sharing of illicit images of children, fraud, hacking/cracking, denial of service attacks and virus/malware propagation through the use of a variety of worms, botnets, malware, viruses and P2P file sharing. This project is focused on study of active P2P nodes along with the analysis of the undocumented communication methods employed in many of these large unstructured networks. This is achieved through the design and implementation of an efficient P2P monitoring and crawling toolset. The requirement for investigating P2P based systems is not limited to the more obvious cybercrimes listed above, as many legitimate P2P based applications may also be pertinent to a digital forensic investigation, e.g, voice over IP, instant messaging, etc. Investigating these networks has become increasingly difficult due to the broad range of network topologies and the ever increasing and evolving range of P2P based applications. In this work we introduce the Universal P2P Network Investigation Framework (UP2PNIF), a framework which enables significantly faster and less labour intensive investigation of newly discovered P2P networks through the exploitation of the commonalities in P2P network functionality. In combination with a reference database of known network characteristics, it is envisioned that any known P2P network can be instantly investigated using the framework, which can intelligently determine the best investigation methodology and greatly expedite the evidence gathering process. A proof of concept tool was developed for conducting investigations on the BitTorrent network.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks aggregate enormous storage and processing resources while minimizing entry and scaling costs. Gnutella-like P2P networks are complex heterogeneous networks, in which the underlying overlay topology has a power-law node degree distribution. While scale-free networks have great robustness against random failures, they are vulnerable to deliberate attacks where highly connected nodes are eliminated. Since high degree nodes play an important role in maintaining the connectivity, this paper presents an algorithm based on random walks to locate high degree nodes in P2P networks. Simulations demonstrate that the algorithm performs well in various scenarios and that heterogeneous P2P networks are very sensitive to deliberate attacks.
