Abstract:We show that every function in a spline subspace is uniquely determined and can be reconstructed by its local averages near certain points. Regular and irregular average sampling theorems for spline subspaces are obtained.

Abstract:As a special shift-invariant spaces, spline subspaces yield many advantages so that there are many practical applications for signal or image processing. In this paper, we pay attention to the sampling and reconstruction problem in spline subspaces. We improve lower bound of sampling set conditions in spline subspaces. Based on the improved explicit lower bound, a improved explicit convergence ratio of reconstruction algorithm is obtained. The improved convergence ratio occupies faster convergence rate than old one. At the end, some numerical examples are shown to validate our results.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of constructing a smooth surface to fit rows of data points. A special class of T-spline surfaces is examined, which is characterized to have a global knot vector in one parameter direction and individual knot vectors from row to row in the other parameter direction. These T-spline surfaces are suitable for lofted surface interpolation or approximation. A skinning algorithm using these T-spline surfaces is proposed, which does not require the knot compatibility of sectional curves. The algorithm consists of three main steps: generating sectional curves by interpolating data points of each row by a B-spline curve; computing the control curves of a skinning surface that interpolates the sectional curves; and approximating each control curve by a B-spline curve with fewer knots, which results in a T-spline surface. Compared with conventional B-spline surface skinning, the proposed T-spline surface skinning has two advantages. First, the sectional curves and the control curves of a T-spline surface can be constructed independently. Second, the generated T-spline skinning surface usually has much fewer control points than a lofted B-spline surface that fits the data points with the same error bound. Experimental examples have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:We study phaseless sampling in spline spaces generated by B-splines with arbitrary knots. For real spline spaces, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a sequence of sampling points to admit a local phase retrieval of any nonseparable function. We also study phaseless sampling in complex spline spaces and illustrate that phase retrieval is impossible in this case. Nevertheless, we show that phaseless sampling is possible. For any function $f$ in a complex spline space, no mater it is separable or not, we show that $|f(x)|^2$ is uniquely determined and can be recovered linearly from its sampled values at a well chosen sequence of sampling points. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for such sequences.

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Abstract:Set valued functions possess a lot of application future. In this paper we improve the definition of set average defined in Artstein [1]. Based on the new definition the spline subdivision schemes as well as the interpolatory subdivision schemes for general compact sets are introduced. Furthermore the convergence properties of the subdivision schemes are discussed. Comparison results based on the new definition with the old one are included to demonstrate that the new one possesses more physical meanings for most cases of the solid modelling.

Abstract:We derive sufficient conditions for sampling with derivatives in shift-invariant spaces generated by a periodic exponential B-spline. The sufficient conditions are expressed with a new notion of measuring the gap between consecutive samples. These conditions are near optimal, and, in particular, they imply the existence of sampling sets with lower Beurling density arbitrarily close to the necessary density.

Abstract:In this research letter, we introduce a reconstruction formula in spline signal spaces which is a generalization of former results in [11]. A general improved A-P iterative algorithm is presented. We use the algorithm to show reconstruction of signals from weighted samples and also show that the new algorithm shows better convergence than the old one. The explicit convergence rate of the algorithm is obtained.

Abstract:We constructed linear algorithms of sampling recovery and cubature formulas on Smolyak grids parametrized by $m \in \mathbb{N}$ of periodic $d$-variate functions having Lipschitz-H\"older mixed smoothness $\alpha > 0$ based on B-spline quasi-interpolation, and studied their optimality. We established lower estimates (for $\alpha \le 2$) and upper bounds of the error of the optimal sampling recovery and the optimal integration on Smolyak grids, explicit in $d$, $m$ and the number $\nu$ of active variables of functions when $d$ and $m$ may be large.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:This paper considers a class of stochastic variational inequality problems. As proposed by Jiang and Xu (2008), by using the so-called regularized gap function, the authors formulate the problems as constrained optimization problems and then propose a sample average approximation method for solving the problems. Under some moderate conditions, the authors investigate the limiting behavior of the optimal values and the optimal solutions of the approximation problems. Finally, some numerical results are reported to show efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:Based on the observation of importance sampling and second order information about the failure surface of a structure, an importance sampling region is defined in V-space which is obtained by rotating a U-space at the point of maximum likelihood. The sampling region is a hyper-ellipsoid that consists of the sampling ellipse on each plane of main curvature in V-space. Thus, the sampling probability density function can be constructed by the sampling region center and ellipsoid axes. Several examples have shown the efficiency and generality of this method.

Abstract:This paper investigates a time discrete variational model for splines in Wasserstein spaces to interpolate probability measures. Cubic splines in Euclidean space are known to minimize the integrated squared acceleration subject to a set of interpolation constraints. As generalization on the space of probability measures the integral of the squared acceleration is considered as a spline energy and regularized by addition of the usual action functional. Both energies are then discretized in time using local Wasserstein-2 distances and the generalized Wasserstein barycenter. The existence of time discrete regularized splines for given interpolation conditions is established. On the subspace of Gaussian distributions, the spline interpolation problem is solved explicitly and consistency in the discrete to continuous limit is shown. The computation of time discrete splines is implemented numerically, based on entropy regularization and the Sinkhorn algorithm. A variant of Nesterov’s accelerated gradient descent algorithm is applied for the minimization of the fully discrete functional. A variety of numerical examples demonstrate the robustness of the approach and show striking characteristics of the method. As a particular application the spline interpolation for synthesized textures is presented.

Distortion-Free Intelligent Sampling of Sparse Surfaces Via Locally Refined T-Spline Metamodelling

Abstract:Automatic design of the number of sample points and sample locations when measuring surfaces with different geometries is of critical importance to enable autonomous manufacturing. Uniform sampling has been widely used for simple geometry measurement, e.g. planes and spheres. However, there is a lack of appropriate sampling techniques that can be applied to complex freeform surfaces, especially those with sparse topographical features, e.g. cutting edges and other high-curvature features. In this paper, a distortion-free intelligent sampling and reconstruction method with improved efficiency for sparse surfaces is proposed. In this method, a locally-refined T-spline approximation is firstly applied which maps a surface to a simplified T-spline space; then a shift-invariant space sampling method and corresponding reconstruction are applied for the surface measurement. This sampling strategy provides a cost-effective sampling design and guarantees the surface reconstruction without information loss in a T-spline space. Theoretical demonstrations and case studies show that this sampling strategy can provide up to an order of magnitude improvement in accuracy or efficiency over state-of-the-art methods, for the measurement of sparse surfaces, from macro- to nano-scales.

Abstract:In approximation of functions based on point values, least-squares methods provide more stability than interpolation, at the expense of increasing the sampling budget. We show that near-optimal approximation error can nevertheless be achieved, in an expected $L^2$ sense, as soon as the sample size $m$ is larger than the dimension $n$ of the approximation space by a constant ratio. On the other hand, for $m=n$, we obtain an interpolation strategy with a stability factor of order $n$. The proposed sampling algorithms are greedy procedures based on <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0808.0163" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0808.0163">arXiv:0808.0163</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1508.03261" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1508.03261">arXiv:1508.03261</a>, with polynomial computational complexity.

Abstract:We introduce average-distortion sketching for metric spaces. As in (worst-case) sketching, these algorithms compress points in a metric space while approximately recovering pairwise distances. The novelty is studying average-distortion: for any fixed (yet, arbitrary) distribution $\mu$ over the metric, the sketch should not over-estimate distances, and it should (approximately) preserve the average distance with respect to draws from $\mu$. The notion generalizes average-distortion embeddings into $\ell_1$ [Rabinovich '03, Kush-Nikolov-Tang '21] as well as data-dependent locality-sensitive hashing [Andoni-Razenshteyn '15, Andoni-Naor-Nikolov-et-al. '18], which have been recently studied in the context of nearest neighbor search. $\bullet$ For all $p \in [1, \infty)$ and any $c$ larger than a fixed constant, we give an average-distortion sketch for $([\Delta]^d, \ell_p)$ with approximation $c$ and bit-complexity $\text{poly}(cp \cdot 2^{p/c} \cdot \log(d\Delta))$, which is provably impossible in (worst-case) sketching. $\bullet$ As an application, we improve on the approximation of sublinear-time data structures for nearest neighbor search over $\ell_p$ (for large $p > 2$). The prior best approximation was $O(p)$ [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Andoni-Naor-Nikolov-et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> '18, Kush-Nikolov-Tang '21], and we show it can be any $c$ larger than a fixed constant (irrespective of $p$) by using $n^{\text{poly}(cp \cdot 2^{p/c})}$ space. We give some evidence that $2^{\Omega(p/c)}$ space may be necessary by giving a lower bound on average-distortion sketches which produce a certain probabilistic certificate of farness (which our sketches crucially rely on).
