Moreover, a very useful approximation theorem for splines in L_p-norm is given. As applications, we give theorems in L_p-norm for splines discussed in [2, 6].

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Daubechies, Ten Lectures on Wavelets, CBMS-NSF Series in Applied Mathematics, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1992] for the case l=N−1. In this note, we will give a new insight into this proposition.

Abstract:As a special shift-invariant spaces, spline subspaces yield many advantages so that there are many practical applications for signal or image processing. In this paper, we pay attention to the sampling and reconstruction problem in spline subspaces. We improve lower bound of sampling set conditions in spline subspaces. Based on the improved explicit lower bound, a improved explicit convergence ratio of reconstruction algorithm is obtained. The improved convergence ratio occupies faster convergence rate than old one. At the end, some numerical examples are shown to validate our results.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a new family of refinable functions named pseudo box splines which generalize univariate pseudo-splines to the multivariate setting. The properties of pseudo box splines including stability and regularity are analyzed. Furthermore, we obtain a series of compactly supported C∞ refinable functions by applying nonstationary cascade algorithms to the masks of pseudo box splines. Using these functions, we construct compactly supported nonstationary C∞ tight wavelet frames in L2(Rs) with the spectral frame approximation order.

Abstract:This paper deals with the approximation of discrete real-valued functions by first-degree splines (broken lines) with free knots for arbitrary $L_p$-norms ($1 \leq p \leq \infty)$. We prove the existence of best approximations und derive statements on the position of the (free) knots of a best approximation. Building on this, elsewhere we develop an algorithm to determine a (global) best approximation in the $L_2$-norm.

Abstract:This note concerns the finite interpolation problem with two parametrized families of splines related to polynomial spline interpolation. We address the questions of uniqueness and establish basic convergence rates for splines of the form $ s_\alpha = p\cosh(\alpha\cdot)+q\sinh(\alpha \cdot)$ and $t_\alpha = p+q\tanh(\alpha \cdot) $ between the nodes where $p,q\in\Pi_{k-1}$.

In this paper we shall discuss harmonic spline "interpolation" (on the lines of a grid) as an alternative to polynomial spline interpolation (at vertices of a grid). We will discuss some advantages and drawbacks of this approach and present the asymptotics of the $L_p$-error for adaptive approximation by harmonic splines.

Abstract:This paper begins by reviewing numerous theoretical advancements in the field of multivariate splines, primarily contributed by Professor Larry L. Schumaker. These foundational results have paved the way for a wide range of applications and computational techniques. The paper then proceeds to highlight various practical applications of multivariate splines. These include scattered data fitting and interpolation, the construction of smooth curves and surfaces, and the numerical solutions of various partial differential equations, encompassing both linear and nonlinear PDEs. Beyond these conventional and well-established uses, the paper introduces a novel application of multivariate splines in function value denoising. This innovative approach facilitates the creation of LKB splines, which are instrumental in approximating high-dimensional functions and effectively circumventing the curse of dimensionality.

Abstract:This is a continuation of our previous study on the shape parameter contained in the shifted surface spline. We insist that the data points be purely scattered without meshes and the domain can be of any shape when conducting function interpolation by shifted surface splines. We also endeavor to make our approach easily accessible for scientists, not only mathematicians. However, the space of interpolated functions is smaller than that used before, leading to sharper function approximation. This function space has particular significance in numerical partial differential equations, especially for equations whose solutions lie in Sobolev space. Although the Fourier transform is deeply involved, scientists without a background in Fourier analysis can easily understand and use our approach.

Approximation of Splines in Wasserstein Spaces

Abstract:This paper investigates a time discrete variational model for splines in Wasserstein spaces to interpolate probability measures. Cubic splines in Euclidean space are known to minimize the integrated squared acceleration subject to a set of interpolation constraints. As generalization on the space of probability measures the integral over the squared acceleration is considered as a spline energy and regularized by addition of the usual action functional. Both energies are then discretized in time using local Wasserstein-2 distances and the generalized Wasserstein barycenter. The existence of time discrete regularized splines for given interpolation conditions is established. On the subspace of Gaussian distributions, the spline interpolation problem is solved explicitly and consistency in the discrete to continuous limit is shown. The computation of time discrete splines is implemented numerically, based on entropy regularization and the Sinkhorn algorithm. A variant of the iPALM method is applied for the minimization of the fully discrete functional. A variety of numerical examples demonstrate the robustness of the approach and show striking characteristics of the method. As a particular application the spline interpolation for synthesized textures is presented.

Abstract:We uncover an unexpected connection between the physics of loop integrals and the mathematics of spline functions. One loop integrands are Laplace transforms of splines. This clarifies the geometry of the associated loop integrals, since a n-node spline has support on a n-vertex polyhedral cone. One-loop integrals are integrals of splines on a hyperbolic slice of the cone, yielding polytopes in AdS space. Splines thus give a geometrical counterpart to the rational function identities at the level of the integrand. Spline technology also allows for a clear, simple, algebraic decomposition of higher point loop integrals in lower dimensional kinematics in terms of lower point integrals — e.g. an hexagon integral in 2d kinematics can be written as a sum of scalar boxes. Higher loops can also be understood directly in terms of splines — they map onto spline convolutions, leading to an intriguing representation in terms of hyperbolic simplices integrated over other hyperbolic simplices. We finish with speculations on the interpretation of one-loop integrals as partition functions, inspired by the use of splines in counting points in polytopes.

Abstract:For the L_2-orthogonal projector P onto spaces of linear splines over simplicial partitions of polyhedral domains in R^d, d>1, we show that the L_infty norm of P cannot be bounded uniformly with respect to the partition. This is in contrast to d=1, where these norms are bounded by 3 independently of the partition. This negative result is folklore among specialists in finite element methods and approximation theory but seemingly has never been formally proved.

Abstract:Splines come in a variety of flavors that can be characterized in terms of some differential operator L. The simplest piecewise-constant model corresponds to the derivative operator. Likewise, one can extend the traditional notion of total variation by considering more general operators than the derivative. This leads us to the definition of the generalized Beppo-Levi space M, which is further identified as the direct sum of two Banach spaces. We then prove that the minimization of the generalized total variation (gTV) over M, subject to some arbitrary (convex) consistency constraints on the linear measurements of the signal, admits nonuniform L-spline solutions with fewer knots than the number of measurements. This shows that non-uniform splines are universal solutions of continuous-domain linear inverse problems with LASSO, L1, or TV-like regularization constraints. Remarkably, the spline-type is fully determined by the choice of L and does not depend on the actual nature of the measurements.

p-Laplace equations in conformal geometry

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the p-Laplace equations for the intermediate Schouten curvature in conformal geometry. These p-Laplace equations provide more tools for the study of geometry and topology of manifolds. First, the positivity of the intermediate Schouten curvature yields the vanishing of Betti numbers on locally conformally flat manifolds as consequences of the Böchner formula as in the works of Nayatani and Guan-Lin-Wang. Secondly and more interestingly, when the intermediate Schouten curvature is nonnegative, these p-Laplace equations facilitate the geometric applications of p-superharmonic functions and the nonlinear potential theory. This leads to the estimates on Hausdorff dimension of singular sets and vanishing of homotopy groups that is inspired by and extends the work of Schoen-Yau. In the forthcoming paper we will present our results on the asymptotic behavior of p-superharmonic functions at singularities.

Abstract:Abstract Polynomial splines are ubiquitous in the fields of computer-aided geometric design and computational analysis. Splines on T-meshes, especially, have the potential to be incredibly versatile since local mesh adaptivity enables efficient modeling and approximation of local features. Meaningful use of such splines for modeling and approximation requires the construction of a suitable spanning set of linearly independent splines, and a theoretical understanding of the spline space dimension can be a useful tool when assessing possible approaches for building such splines. Here, we provide such a tool. Focusing on T-meshes, we study the dimension of the space of bivariate polynomial splines, and we discuss the general setting where local mesh adaptivity is combined with local polynomial degree adaptivity. The latter allows for the flexibility of choosing non-uniform bi-degrees for the splines, i.e., different bi-degrees on different faces of the T-mesh. In particular, approaching the problem using tools from homological algebra, we generalize the framework and the discourse presented by Mourrain (Math. Comput. 83 (286):847–871, 2014) for uniform bi-degree splines. We derive combinatorial lower and upper bounds on the spline space dimension and subsequently outline sufficient conditions for the bounds to coincide.

Abstract:In this article, we begin by introducing two classes of lacunary fractional spline functions by using the Liouville–Caputo fractional Taylor expansion. We then introduce a new higher-order lacunary fractional spline method. We not only derive the existence and uniqueness of the method, but we also provide the error bounds for approximating the unique positive solution. As applications of our fundamental findings, we offer some Liouville–Caputo fractional differential equations (FDEs) to illustrate the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed method. Several recent developments on the the theory and applications of FDEs in (for example) real-life situations are also indicated.

Abstract:This article is devoted to developing a theory for effective kernel interpolation and approximation in a general setting. For a wide class of compact, connected $C^\infty$ Riemannian manifolds, including the important cases of spheres and SO(3), we establish, using techniques involving differential geometry and Lie groups, that the kernels obtained as fundamental solutions of certain partial differential operators generate Lagrange functions that are uniformly bounded and decay away from their center at an algebraic rate, and in certain cases, an exponential rate. An immediate corollary is that the corresponding Lebesgue constants for interpolation as well as for $L_2$ minimization are uniformly bounded with a constant whose only dependence on the set of data sites is reflected in the mesh ratio, which measures the uniformity of the data. The kernels considered here include the restricted surface splines on spheres, as well as surface splines for SO(3), both of which have elementary closed-form representations that are computationally implementable. In addition to obtaining bounded Lebesgue constants in this setting, we also establish a "zeros lemma" for domains on compact Riemannian manifolds -- one that holds in as much generality as the corresponding Euclidean zeros lemma (on Lipschitz domains satisfying interior cone conditions) with constants that clearly demonstrate the influence of the geometry of the boundary (via cone parameters) as well as that of the Riemannian metric.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a priori error estimates in standard Sobolev (semi-)norms for approximation in spline spaces of maximal smoothness on arbitrary grids. The error estimates are expressed in terms of a power of the maximal grid spacing, an appropriate derivative of the function to be approximated, and an explicit constant which is, in many cases, sharp. Some of these error estimates also hold in proper spline subspaces, which additionally enjoy inverse inequalities. Furthermore, we address spline approximation of eigenfunctions of a large class of differential operators, with a particular focus on the special case of periodic splines. The results of this paper can be used to theoretically explain the benefits of spline approximation under $k$-refinement by isogeometric discretization methods. They also form a theoretical foundation for the outperformance of smooth spline discretizations of eigenvalue problems that has been numerically observed in the literature, and for optimality of geometric multigrid solvers in the isogeometric analysis context.
