Abstract:This paper proposes a new framework to analyze social contentions in China from the perspectives of contention motives and mobilization channels, explains why traditional forms of contention do not undermine the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) rule, and identifies anti-system contention as a distinctive form of contention that poses the greatest challenge to the CCP’s rule. Through analysis of political opportunity structures and mobilization mechanisms that allowed anti-system contentions to rise, this paper argues that since such contentions mainly consist of value-oriented social actors mobilized via informal channels, it would require the Chinese regime to adapt to a more targeted and coordinated model of repression to address the new challenges. The paper further provides empirical case studies to show the effectiveness of the regime’s adaptive repression and shows that anti-system contentions in China face their own hurdle to develop into more prominent contentions.

Abstract:Abstract: This paper argues that despite the considerable resilience demonstrated by the Chinese authoritarian regime, its power experiences continuous atrophy. With the weakening of the totalitarian control imposed on Chinese society, the current stability maintenance system has been decreasing in its effectiveness. Meanwhile, contentious activities within the civil society gain momentum, and grow in both frequency and complexity. Movements such as human rights advocacy and political pluralism are traversing down a path towards a multilaterally coalesced resistance of authoritarian authority. The final part of this paper proposes and analyzes three possible trends of the development of social contentions in Chinese civil society.

Abstract:<span><em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">In Governance, Domestic Change and Social Policy in China,</em>the contributing authors cover 7 different aspects of China from the Republic of China (ROC: 1912–49); Socialist China (PRC: 1949–79) and China under Reform and Economic Opening (PRC: 1978–2017) in seven chapters. The editors, Blanchard and Lin, introduced the book with a historical perspective. Contrary to the state-society dichotomy, the authors brought forward the interstices which suggest four major expectations in Chinese politics under comparative historical analysis: firstly, the conflicts as well as compromises between state actors and societal interests exist in different arenas. Secondly, organized social interests do not intrinsically seek autonomy or resist extension of state leverages over the operations of NGOs. Thirdly, "State in Society" matters as state power stems directly from the evolving social structures. Consent to Contend: the Power of the Masses in China's Local Elite Bargain

Abstract:This study explores how local officials tolerate and use mass mobilization to extract policy concessions from above. Local officials strategically tolerate mass mobilization when the demands of the masses are congruent with elements of their own agenda that they are otherwise unable to pursue. Protestors in the streets turn out to be a powerful bargaining chip for local officials: they illustrate ex ante that higher level leaders risk causing social instability if they reject the masses' demands. The article lays out the institutional environment that gives rise to such a strategy, presents a detailed case study focusing on the alliance between local officials and citizens in a mass mobilization regarding administrative redistricting, and discusses the presence of such "consent instability" in other issue areas in China. The result from a survey experiment of Chinese officials is consistent with the hypothesis that officials are more likely to concede to the demands of their subordinates when popular pressure back their demand. The findings reveal a crucial elite-mass linkage in China's bureaucratic politics that researchers have neglected.

Abstract:This article argues that performance legitimacy, an aspect of state legitimacy neglected by Weber in his original formulation of the theory of domination, played a particularly important role in the history of China and has shaped not only the patterns of Chinese history but also today’s Chinese politics. Yet, performance legitimacy is intrinsically unstable because it carries concrete promises and therefore will trigger immediate political crisis when the promises are unfulfilled. This problem is especially profound for a modern state once its power is based primarily on performance because modern states tend to be development rather than maintenance oriented and promise too much. Therefore, although the current government expends much effort to heighten its legitimacy by improving its performance, it will face a major crisis when the Chinese economy cools off unless it establishes legal-electoral legitimacy.

Abstract:The privatization thesis of secularization theory has been challenged since last decades. Religion in public sphere is becoming contentious all over the world. Through the theoretical perspective of Max Weber' s "struggle of gods", this paper tries to analyze four controversial cases in the past three years, which include disputes among cultural traditionalists, Buddhists, Christian and non - believers, to reveal the of faith in contemporary China. On that basis, its cultural background, mechanism, pattern and social consequences will be discussed.
