Abstract:Objective To study the development and growth status among students in Beijing in 2010,and to analyze the urban-rural differences and gender differences,and to provide appropriate information for the related research.Methods According to the 2010 Beijing student physical constitution survey data,the indices of the survey were compared between boys and girls or urban and rural areas.Results There were differences between urban and rural areas in the height and weight,the rural-urban difference of weight for girls eliminated earlier than that for boys.There was significant gender differences for dynamic change of growth process and final height.For the detection rate of overweight/obesity,boys' was higher than girls',the urban was higher than the rural.For the detection rate of malnutrition,girls' was higher than boys',the urban was higher than the rural.Conclusion The urban-rural gap of growth and development is still significant among children and adolescents in Beijing.In order to eliminate differences between urban and rural children,some comprehensive measurement should be taken.

Abstract:Objective: Using the Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health data from 1985 to 2014 to analyze the trend of excellent and good physical fitness and health status among Chinese Han students aged 13 to 18 years and the related influencing factors. Methods: 738 523 students aged 13 to 18 years with completed data of gender, age, urban and rural, physical form, vital capacity and physical fitness were selected from the six Chinese National Surveys on Students' Constitution and Health. According to National Standards for Students' Physical Health (2014 revision), the comprehensive scores and the prevalence of excellent and good physical fitness and health status were calculated (90.0-120.0 was classified as excellent, and 80.0-89.9 was classified as good). The trend of prevalence of excellent and good physical fitness and health status in different years and the corresponding differences among students with different characteristics were analyzed and compared. The log-binomial regression model was used to analyze related factors of physical fitness and health status. Results: From 1985 to 2014, the overall prevalence of excellent and good physical fitness and health status increased from 27.6% in 1985 to 35.6% in 1995, and then declined to 13.9% in 2005. In the 2010 and 2014 cycles, the prevalence increased steadily, at 16.5% and 19.1% respectively. Except for 1995 and 2014, the prevalence of boys was higher than that of girls (P<0.001). The prevalence of students aged 13 to 15 was higher than that of students aged 16 to 18 (P<0.001). Log-binomial regression model analysis showed that girls ［PR（95%CI）=1.03（1.00-1.05）, P=0.021］, rural area ［PR（95%CI）=1.09（1.07-1.12）, P<0.001］, 13-15 years old［PR（95%CI）=1.89（1.84-1.94）, P<0.001］, eastern region［PR（95%CI）=1.94（1.88-2.00）, P<0.001］, middle region［PR（95%CI）=1.15（1.11-1.20）, P<0.001］, Exercise time ≥1 h/d［PR（95%CI）=1.41（1.37-1.45）, P<0.001］, parents support participation in sports activities after school［PR（95%CI）=1.10（1.06-1.15）, P<0.001］, TV time ≤1 h/d［PR（95%CI）=1.26（1.21-1.30）, P<0.001］, playing video games, watching videos or e-books ≤1 h/d［PR（95%CI）=1.05（1.02-1.09）, P<0.001］ were all related to the high prevalence of excellent and good physical fitness and health status. Conclusion: The prevalence of excellent and good physical fitness and health status among students aged 13 to 18 was changing between 1985 and 2014. Gender, age, area, physical exercise time, screen time for non-learning purposes, and parents' attitudes toward students' participation in physical activities were all related to the excellent and good physical fitness and health status of students.

Abstract:Objective This paper analyzed the changes of the physical development of students in rural area of Chang'an District during the ten years from 1990 through 1999.Methods Stratified and cluster sampling method were applied to collect two parameters (body height and weight)of students of every primary school and high school in Chang'an District.Results The physical development of rural students in Chang'an District improved significantly during the ten years.In the decade,the mean height of male and female of rural students aged 7_18 years old increased 2^23cm and 1^93cm respectively while the average of their weight increased 1^74kg and 1^21kg respectively.But these values increased were lower than that of rural students in the national investigation of China.The maximum annual increment and the maximum annual incremental rate in 1999 were lower than those in 1990.The peak height velocity and the peak weight velocity of female students in 1999 appeared 0^77 and 0^32 year earlier than in 1990 while that of the male student were 0^52 and 0^6 year later respectively. Couclusions The physical cevelopment of rural students in the area was still progresing as that shown in secular growth trend,but the velocity became slower.The growth potential of the students remained to be brought into full play.
A cross-section study on physical fitness level among Chinese primary and middle school students in 2010

Abstract:Objective To understand the current situation of physical fitness levels of Chinese primary and middle school students and to explore factors influencing on physical fitness.Methods A total of 215 319 students aged 7-18 were selected from "National Physical Fitness and Health Surveillance on Chines School Students in 2010",stratified cluster sampling was taken to select subjects from 30 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities(except Tibet).Physical development indicators were measured,and questionnaires about physical activities and lifestyle were used."The National Standards of Physical Fitness in School Students"(published by Ministry of Education of People' s Republic of China) was taken to evaluate students' physical fitness.Univariable analysis and Logistic regression were used to analyze the association between physical fitness and individual factors,school factors and social factors.Results The overall pass rate was 71.3% and the rates of boys and girls were 74.2% and 68.4%,respectively.The results revealed the pass rate decreasing with the growth of age,and the rate among students from urban areas was lower than that among students from rural areas.Univariable analysis illustrated that,as for social economic levels,subjects from "developed" and "moderate" areas had higher pass rates than subjects from "low" areas;students who took sufficient PE classes had a higher pass rate than subjects who took insufficient PE classes;compared with healthy-weight subjects,overweight and obese students had a lower pass rate;students who spent more than 2 hours on homework had a lower pass rate than who spent less than 2 hours on homework;in most age groups,subjects who spent more than 2 hours on TV,computer or electronic games had a lower pass rate;students who did exercises more than 1 hours per day had a higher compliance rate.Logistic regression demonstrated that,students from areas with low social economic development had a higher risk not to reach the national standards(OR=1.098,95%CI: 1.069-1.128);students who took sufficient PE classes had a higher risk not to reach the national standards in comparison with subjects who took insufficient PE classes(OR=1.283,95%CI:1.252-1.315);overweight and obese students had a higher failure rate than healthy-weight students(OR=3.483,95%CI:3.375-3.595);students who did exercises less than 1 hours per day had a higher failure rate(OR=1.256,95%CI:1.224-1.296);students who spent more than 2 hours on TV,computer or electronic games had a higher failure rate(OR=1.226,95%CI:1.180-1.274).Conclusion The pass rate of physical fitness among Chinese school students is comparatively low,students from less developed areas,taking insufficient PE classes or exercise less than 1 hours per day,having more sedentary activities have higher failure rates;overweight and obese students have a higher failure rate as well.
Comparison of physical growth increments among Chinese urban student populations during 1985-2005

Abstract:Objective To observe the growth changes of the Chinese urban students from 1985 to 2005 and to provide evidence for the intervention measurements.Methods Based on the re-organization of the sampling structure,of the Chinese National Survey on Students' Physical Fitness and Constitution,three new groups named the "coast metropolis",the "other provincial capitals" and the "moderate/small cities" were set up.Means of height and BMI in each of the sex-age groups for all those aged 7 through 18 years were calculated and compared between 1985 and 2005,in order to show the growth changes in this period.Results An overall positive and swift trend was found in all these three populations.The increments of 7-year-old's height were 4.2,5.0 and 4.8 cm for male groups,and 4.3,5.0 and 4.0 cm for female groups,respectively.Strong evidence showed the advancement of puberty.For the means of adult height,the increasing rates were 1.5,1.1 and 1.3 cm/decade and 1.1,1.0 and 0.8 cm/decade,for the three populations of males and females respectively.Conclusion The physical growth of the Chinese urban students has overall entered the complete secular growth trend.More effective intervention measures should be taken to reduce the imbalance of growth levels among populations,and to prevent the swift epidemic of childhood overweight and obesity.
Rural-Urban Differences in Physical Fitness and Overweight Prevalence of Children and Adolescents from Central South China

Abstract:Purpose: This present study aims to determine the rural-urban differences in physical fitness and overweight prevalence among children and adolescents from Central South China. Methods: All the original parameters of physical fitness indicators for 216,718 participants aged from 7 to 15 years old were obtained from the website of the Chinese National Student Physical Fitness Database and were analyzed by SPSS. Results: (1) Children and adolescents from rural areas were observed to have a more adverse physical fitness ratio, and the urban-rural differences were identified in each physical fitness indicator. (2) Rural areas had a higher overweight prevalence (p < 0.01). When compared to urban cities, overweight students from rural towns measured a significantly poorer cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness in primary school (p < 0.05), while the result in middle school was showed the opposite. (3) Rural-urban residence and sex were the moderately correlated factors for muscular fitness among overweight students. Conclusions: Urban children and adolescents in central south China had an overall healthier profile than their rural peers, particularly in overweight groups. The government and related functional departments should take the factors of rural-urban residence and sex of students into consideration when building a state strategy and interventions to promote physical activity and health.

Abstract:Abstract Background The Chinese government approved the Outline of the Healthy China 2030 (HC2030) Plan in 2016, and made public health a priority for all future economic and social development. Studies have demonstrated the importance of investment in health care throughout the 8000 days that it takes for a human to develop, on reducing the disease burden in this group. Therefore, as well as children, adolescents should be recognised as an essential target population for health-care investment, and HC2030 plans to achieve key goals in adolescent health. This study aims to explore the gaps in adolescent health care that must be bridged, and to examine experiences from previous policies for lessons that will help the goals of HC2030 in adolescent health to be realised. Methods Policies relating to adolescent health issued by the Chinese government during the past three decades were reviewed. Data from the Global Burden of Disease study (1990–2016) and seven cycles of national successive cross-sectional survey, the Chinese National Survey on Studentsu0027 Constitution and Health (1985–2014), were used. Trends and geographical distribution of essential indicators, including overweight and obesity, stunting, poor vision, oral health, physical activity, and smoking, were analysed in students aged 10–19 years who were selected from primary and secondary schools in 31 provinces of mainland China using a multistage cluster sampling method. The current situation was compared with the targets of the HC2030 to identify gaps between the two. This study was approved by the Ethic committee of Peking University Health Science Center (IRB00001052-18002) and informed verbal consent was obtained from participants or their guardians. Findings Policies issued by the Chinese government have contributed to great improvements in adolescent health. For example, all-cause mortality has halved in the past 26 years, and the prevalence of stunting declined from 16·1% in 1985 to 2·8% in 2014. However, critical challenges to reaching the goals of HC2030 were also observed. The prevalence of overweight and obesity increased from 1·1% in 1985 to 18·2% in 2014, and only 1·6% of adolescents in 2014 had excellent physical fitness based on the National Student Physical Fitness Standard. According to the goals of HC2030, the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity should be controlled, and 25% of adolescents should have excellent physical fitness in 2030. Thus, there is a substantial gap to be bridged by 2030. Additionally, the geographical imbalance in health achievements is substantial (eg, the prevalence of stunting was 0.48% in Beijing, but 11·1% in Guizhou province in 2014). Interpretation Although great achievements have been obtained, our findings call for strengthened practical policies to improve adolescent health, reduce the geographical imbalance in health achievements, and to achieve the goals of HC2030. Abstract:The physical health of Chinese high school students has always been a concern. According to statistics from the Chinese Ministry of Education, there are currently widespread problems among Chinese high school students, including a decline in physical fitness, an increase in obesity rates, and a high prevalence of myopia. To improve the physical health of Chinese high school students, the national and local governments have implemented a series of measures, such as promoting nationwide fitness activities, encouraging sports, improving dietary structures, and enhancing the quality of education. Meanwhile, many schools have also begun to pay attention to physical exercise, strengthening students' physical education courses, providing various sports facilities and equipment, and encouraging students to actively participate in sports activities, to provide a better environment and conditions for the healthy development of high school students. This article investigates factors affecting the physical health of high school students and provides suggestions for improving their physical fitness by using literature, data, and testing methods. The study focuses on 120 students from Hohhot No. 36 High School and compares their physical fitness test results with those of other high school students across the country. By cultivating students' physical fitness through various means, this study aims to improve students' physical health and address their weaknesses in physical fitness.
The impact of school life and family involvement on Western China junior high school students' wellbeing at multidimensional levels

Abstract:Background: The focus of students' health concerns has gradually progressed from the single factor of physical health to comprehensive health factors, and the physical and mental health of students are now generally considered together. This study focuses on exploring the status of junior high school students' physical health and their subjective health assessment with the major societal factors that affect students' lives: School Life and Family involvement. In addition, we explore the main factors influencing students' subjective health. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 190 Tibetan junior high school students in the Maozhuang Township. The intentional sampling was used to choose the research object. The structured questionnaire comprised four parts, namely social and demographic information, family condition, school life, and subjective health quality which was assessed by PROMIS (Chinese version of the Pediatric Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System). Result: The average height and weight of boys and girls are statistically different (p-values of 0.026 and 0.044, respectively), but there is no statistically significant difference in BMI (Body Mass Index) between boys and girls (p-value of 0.194). The average values of the five dimensions of depression, anger, anxiety, fatigue, and peer relationships in the PROMIS of the research subjects were 58.9 ± 5.3, 53.3 ± 8.0, 58.1 ± 7.3, 52.8 ± 8.0, 39.3 ± 6.6. In the demographic dimension, the grade was the main factor influencing anger (p < 0.01) and fatigue (p < 0.01), while gender was related to peer relationships (p = 0.02). In the family dimension, the father's educational level was related to peer relationships (p = 0.05), while the family financial situation was related to depression (p = 0.01). In the school life dimension, relationship with classmates was found to affect anger (p = 0.05), while homework was related to anxiety (p = 0.02) and fatigue (p = 0.05). Conclusion: the physical health index BMI and subjective health evaluation of students are worse than students of more developed areas in China. Their family environment and school life all have varying degrees of impact on the five subjective health outcomes. There are differences in gender and grade level. The government and society need to pay more attention to the physical and mental health of students in remote and underdeveloped areas and improve their health through a student nutrition plan and the establishment of mental health offices.

Abstract:Objective To explore the physical fitness level among Chinese Han students aged 13-18 years in 2014 and physical fitness trend from 2010 to 2014,and to provide scientific reference for making intervention measures to improve students condition of physical fitness.Methods Students aged 13-18 were recruited from database of Chinese National Survey on Students Constitution and Health from 2010 to 2014.The collected data were tested to calculate combined scores and qualified rates based on the National Student Physical Health Standard modified in 2014.And t test and Chi-square test were used in the statistical analysis.Results The qualified rate of Chinese Han students aged 13-18 in 2014 was 83.9％.With the age increasing,the rate showed a downward tendency.The qualified rate of junior school students(86.5％) was higher than that of senior school students(81.3％) (x2=531.03,P＜0.05).Boys were revealed with a lower qualified rate(83.5％) than girls (84.3％)(x2=12.86,P＜0.05).The qualified rate of boys' health reduced from 85.8％ in 2010 to 83.5％ in 2014(x2 =110.25,P＜0.05).The qualified rate of girls increased from 83.4％ in 2014 to 84.3％ in 2014(x2 =15.86,P＜0.05).The changing trend of urban boys(-3.0％) and girls(1.0％) was higher than that of rural boys(-1.6％) and girls(0.8％) respectively.Conclusion Physical fitness of Chinese Han students aged 13-18 in 2014 is not optimistic,and there is a decline in students condition of physical fitness from 2010 to 2014.We should take targeted intervention measures to improve the physical fitness of students.

Abstract:Objective To compare the characteristics of morphology, physical constitution and motor indices of rural students between Li and Han nationalities,and to explore the efficient factors to promote students constitution development.Methods The indices of students' morphology, physical function, endurance, muscle power and flexibility were compared between two different nationalities by using the Chinese national survey on students' physical constitution in 2000.Results The morphological constitutions of Li nationality students were almost the same as Han nationality in rural areas of Hainan province, but they were slimmer and their level of vital capacity was lower than the Han nation nality students in rural.Compared with Han nationality,boy's chin-ups and girls' sit-ups were better.The older students of Li nationality performed better on flexibility,while Han students better on endurance in Hainan rural area.Conclusion Interventions on nutrition and physical exercise should be implemented to improve students' health according to the different characteristics of them.

Abstract:Background Physical fitness is strongly associated with health. Despite the extent of the nutritional transition from food scarcity to diets high in fats and refined carbohydrates that has occurred in China, to our knowledge, trends in physical fitness have not been described. We aimed to assess trends in physical fitness and its association with the nutritional transition among Chinese children and adolescents. Methods In this retrospective analysis, data from Chinese school students aged 7-18 years were extracted from six successive national surveys undertaken between 1985 and 2014. Six components of physical fitness (forced vital capacity, standing long jump, sit-and-reach, body muscle strength, 50 m dash, and endurance running) were measured repeatedly in each survey and aggregated as a summary physical fitness indicator (PFI). Growth and nutritional status (stunting, thinness, normal weight, overweight, and obesity) were defined by use of WHO definitions, and we combined stunting and thinness as undemutrition and overweight and obesity as ovemutrition. Urbanisation levels were obtained from the statistical yearbook of the National and Provincial Bureau of Statistics of China. We used fractional polynomial regression and generalised additive models to assess associations between PFI and nutritional outcomes and between PFI and levels of urbanisation. Findings Between 1985 and 2014, 1513435 students participated in the Chinese National Survey on Students' Constitution and Health, and 1494485 were included in our study. We observed a decline of the PFI during 1985-2014 (overall PFI change -0.8), albeit with an increase from 1985 to 1995 (PFI change 1.2), coinciding with a shift in the major nutritional problems from stunting and thinness to overweight and obesity. Both undernourished (PFI -2.44 for thin and -3.42 for stunting) and ovemourished (-1.49 for overweight and -3.63 for obese) students had a lower PFI than that of those with normal weight (-0.41) in 2014. Boys had a larger decline in PFI than girls in 1985-2014, especially boys with obesity (PFI change -2.7). We observed the highest PFI in 1995 (1.17), when the proportion of students with normal weight was highest. Advancing urbanisation was accompanied by dedines in physical fitness, which occurred in both students in rural settings and those in urban settings in these regions. Interpretation Our study supports the continuation of policies to improve physical fitness that focus on undemutrition, including economic subsidies, in poorer rural regions. However, for most of China, taxation of unhealthy foods, promotion of physical activity, reduction in academic pressures, promotion of dietary diversity, reduction of sedentary time, and engagement in formal sporting activities should be elements of policies to promote healthy weight status and prevent obesity in school students, which will also support physical fitness. Investigation on Physical Activity Among Children and Adolescents with Different Nutritional Status in Five Cities in China

Abstract:Objective To identify the status of student physical activities and sedentary behaviors in five cities in China,and to provide evidences for preventing obesity and promoting student health.Methods Normal-weight and overweight students were selected from 50 primary and secondary schools in 5 cities(Beijing,Xiamen,Guangzhou,Harbin and Lanzhou),according to the results of the student physical examination in 2005-2006.Altogether 7 255 students were investigated by self-designed questionnaires,to find out their physical activities and sedentary behaviors and the reasons for the lack of exercises.Results The differences among the five cities in the items of student physical activities(strong or middle level physical activities and sport of P.E lesson) and sedentary behaviors doing homework,watching TV at weekend,watching TV in summer or winter holiday,playing computer games or using computers were statistically significant(P<0.05).Being afraid of tired,having no habits of sports,having no favorite sports were the main reasons for the lack of exercises in students,while the other reasons(such as having no time,lack of equipments,lack of support from their parents) were less important.Conclusion Measures should be taken to promote student physical activities and the different status of physical activities and sedentary behaviors among regions should be considered.
[Secular Growth Trends in the Chinese Urban Youth and Its Implications on Public Health].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the secular growth trends of the Chinese urban youth from 1979 to 2005, in order to make national intervention strategies and measures to improve their physical fitness and health.METHODS:Subjects were sampled from 16 provincial-capital cities in China. They were all Han primary and secondary school students aged 7 to 18 years. The increments of stature, weight and BMI, and the increments per decade of these indicators at different stages were analyzed.RESULTS:In recent 26 years, the overall increments were 6.5 and 4.7 cm for stature, and 8.9 and 5.2 kg for weight, for boys and girls, respectively. Swiftest rates were found in the period of 1985-1995, with the increments which were as high as 3.8 and 3.0 cm/decade for height, and 4.7 and 3.1 kg/decade for weight, for boys and girls respectively. These trends are still strong at present, without any tendency of going to the plateau. Advanced puberty plays the most contributing role in these trends, with the peak height rates being 2.4 cm/decade for girls at the age of 12 and 3.3 cm/decade for boys at the age of 14, respectively. The increments of adult height were 3.2 and 2.1 cm, while the rates were 1.2 and 0.8 cm/decade, for males and females, respectively. The distributing curves of BMI show an accelerating tendency of going to the right side, which suggests that the prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing rapidly.CONCLUSION:China is now experiencing an overall and positive secular trend, which is reflected not only by the accelerating physical growth in childhood, advanced puberty, and steady increments of adult height, but also by the dramatic changes of body shape. We should not only feel proud of the achievements of these secular growth changes and the active socioeconomic influences, but also pay much attention to their negative effects, especially those that may induce the dangers of hypertension, hyperglycemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus and other adulthood diseases, as well as the disease risks of metabolic syndrome that may even occur early in childhood and adolescence.

Abstract:Health is an inevitable requirement for promoting comprehensive human development and a fundamental condition for economic and social development. Improving the development level of physical and mental health among young people and college students in China, promoting the deepening reform of school physical education teaching, and promoting the development of physical health among college students are particularly crucial. At present, the overall physical health level of college students nationwide is showing a positive trend, and their physical form level continues to improve. However, there is still a serious phenomenon of overweight and obesity, and their physical fitness continues to decline, with a particularly significant decline in speed and strength indicators. This article aims to optimize the teaching path of physical education in universities and promote the healthy development of college students' physical fitness.

Based on ensuring physical exercise time and PE curriculum and class hours, as well as improving students' nutrition, we should also strengthen the rational design of physical exercise and ensure the balanced development of various items so as to improve the overall development of students' physical fitness.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To identify the changes of morphological development status on minority students in China from 1985 to 2005.METHODS:We selected a total of 15 groups of the Chinese minority students as subjects of the study, including Mongolian, Hui, Uygur, Zhuang, Korean, Tibetan, Yao, Li, Qiang, Buyi, Dong, Miao, Tu, Salar, Kirgiz, with data from the Chinese national survey on students' physical fitness and health condition in 1985, 1995, 2000 and 2005. Height, weight and waist of the subjects were calculated and analyzed.RESULTS:From 1985 to 2005, the growth and characteristics of height in the Chinese minority students had a similar increase when comparing to the Han students, but with different degrees. However the growth rate was gradually decreasing. The average heights of Kirgiz, Korean, Salar and Mongolian schoolboys aged 18 years old were 170 cm, being 170.91 cm, 170.47 cm, 170.29 cm and 170.27 cm, respectively, which were close to that of the Han students. Some minority students had a substantial increase of body weight. However, the waist of some minority students decreased. Only a few groups of minority students had increasing waist, such as Mongolian and Korean rural boys, Mongolian, Zhuang, and Korean rural girls, with the growth being 0.101 cm, 0.095 cm, 0.126 cm, 0.163 cm and 0.107 cm, respectively. Uygur, Mongolian, Kirgiz and Korean students had the morphological development similar to Han urban students, especially Uighur boys and girls.CONCLUSION:From 1985 to 2005, The height, weight and waist of Chinese minority students had an overall increase at different degrees. In order to improve the physical fitness of minority students, awareness on nutrition and health education of both students and parents should be strengthened. Surveillance and programs on growth, development and health status of the minority children and adolescents should also be carried out continuously.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the changes of physical functions among minority students in China from 1985 to 2005, to provide evidence for health promotion to the minority students in the country.METHODS:Using data from the Chinese national survey on students physical fitness and health from 1985 to 2005, we analyzed the physical functions of 15 minority groups from primary and secondary schools, including Mongolian, Hui, Uygur, Zhuang, Korean, Tibetan, Yao, Li, Qiang, Buyi, Dong, Miao, Tu, Salar, Kirgiz, aged 7 - 18 years old.RESULTS:Some of the minority students had the higher levels of physiological functions and athletic ability, but some indicators decreased significantly. In terms of items related to 'speed', most of the minority boys and girls improved, but items related to 'endurance' or'vital capacity', were significantly declining. Part of the minority students had better 'endurance' than students of Han ethnicity in the cities. All the indicators of athletic ability declined in schoolboys and schoolgirls of Korean ethnicity. Kirgiz students were outstanding in vital capacity and speed quality while Uighur students had better physical development and vital capacity, but were poorer in running and jumping, reflecting the weakness of explosive power of lower limbs. On the contrary, Li and Zhuang students had shown a very good quality in running, jumping, male shoulder muscular strength and endurance items, etc.CONCLUSION:The physical functions and the athletic ability of the minority students in China had the advantages and characteristics, which might be related to their living environment and habits.

Abstract:Objective To compare the level of growth and development of children and adolescents of Jiangxi Province and Shanghai Municipality, and to figure out the influencing factors.Methods Using the Chinese national survey on students' physical fitness and health in 2000 to analyze and test the difference on students' stature (cm), body weight (kg), Body Mass Index (kg/m 2) and vital capacity/body weight (ml/kg) between Jiangxi and Shanghai. Results The physical growth level of students in Shanghai is significantly higher than that of Jiangxi students. The maximum differences on stature are 7 6cm and 10 7cm for urban and rural boys respectively, and 5 7cm and 8 0cm for urban and rural girls respectively Analysis on BMI showed that the body of students in Shanghai was much stronger than that of Jiangxi students (except for the females aged above 18); while the level of vital capacity/body weight among students in Shanghai is much lower than that of Jiangxi students. Conclusion Growth spurt appeared earlier in students in Shanghai with greater extent and longer duration than those in Jiangxi, while the former should enhance physical practice to improve their vital capa- city.
