Abstract:In some baryogenesis scenarios, the universe acquires a non-vanishing average baryonic charge, but the baryon to photon ratio is not spatially constant and can be even negative in some space regions. This allows for existence of lumps of antimatter in our neighborhood and the possibility that very compact antimatter objects make a part of cosmological dark matter. Here I discuss the peculiar signatures which may be observed in a near future.

Abstract:The existence of antimatter stars in the Galaxy as possible signature for inflationary models with non-homogeneous baryo-synthesis may leave the trace by antimatter cosmic rays as well as by their secondaries (anti-planets and anti-meteorites) diffused bodies in our galactic halo. The anti-meteorite flux may leave its explosive gamma signature by colliding on lunar soil as well as on terrestrial, jovian and solar atmospheres. However the propagation in galaxy and the consequent evaporation in galactic matter gas suppress the lightest (m < 10^(-2)g) anti-meteorites. Anisotropic annihilation of larger anti-meteorites within a narrow mass window, maybe rarely deflected, bounced by the galactic gas disk, escaping detection in our solar system. Nevertheless heaviest anti-meteorites (m > 10^(-1)g up to 10^(6)g) are unable to be deflected by the thin galactic gas surface annihilation; they might hit the Sun (or rarely Jupiter) leading to an explosive gamma event and a spectacular track with a bouncing and even a propelling annihilation on cromosphere and photosphere. Their anti-nuclei annihilation in pions and their final hard gammas showering may be observabe as a "solar flare" at a rate nearly comparable to the observed ones. From their absence we may infer bounds on antimatter-matter ratio near or below 10^(-9) limit: already recorded data in BATSE catalog might be applied.

Abstract:It is shown that the dense population of the early universe with well developed galaxies and supermassive black holes (quasars), observed by HST and JWST, nicely fits the conjecture that the galaxies and quasars are seeded by primordial black holes (PBHs), proposed in our work more than 30 years ago. This idea of galaxy seeding by massive black holes is rediscovered in recent publications by several groups. The predicted log-normal mass spectrum of PBHs very well agrees with the observations. Our other prediction of noticeable amount of antimatter in the Galaxy is also confirmed by the data.

A short survey of matter-antimatter evolution in the primordial universe

Abstract:We offer a survey of the matter-antimatter evolution within the primordial Universe. While the origin of the tiny matter-antimatter asymmetry has remained one of the big questions in modern cosmology, antimatter itself has played a large role for much of the Universe's early history. In our study of the evolution of the Universe we adopt the position of the standard model $\Lambda$-CDM Universe implementing the known baryonic asymmetry. We present the composition of the Universe across its temperature history while emphasizing the epochs where antimatter content is essential to our understanding. Special topics we address include the heavy quarks in quark-gluon plasma (QGP), the creation of matter from QGP, the free-streaming of the neutrinos, the vanishing of the muons, the magnetism in the electron-positron cosmos, and a better understanding of the environment of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) producing the light elements. We suggest but do not explore further that the methods used in exploring the early Universe may also provide new insights in the study of exotic stellar cores, magnetars, as well as gamma-ray burst (GRB) events. We describe future investigations required in pushing known physics to its extremes in the unique laboratory of the matter-antimatter early Universe.

Abstract:Dark matter is a popular candidate to a new source of primary-charged particles, especially positrons in cosmic rays, which are proposed to account for observable anomalies. While this hypothesis of decaying or annihilating DM is mostly applied for our Galaxy, it could possibly lead to some interesting phenomena when applied for the other ones. In this work, we look into the hypothetical asymmetry in gamma radiation from the upper and lower hemisphere of the dark matter halo of the Andromeda galaxy due to inverse Compton scattering of starlight on the DM-produced electrons and positrons. While our 2D toy model raises expectations for the possible effect, a more complex approach gives negligible effect for the dark halo case, but shows some prospects for a dark disk~model.

Abstract:The galaxies M82, NGC 253, NGC 1068, and NGC 4945 have been detected in gamma-rays by Fermi. Previously, we developed and tested a model for cosmic ray interactions in the starburst galaxy M82. Now, we aim to explore the differences between starburst and active galactic nuclei (AGN) environments by applying our self-consistent model to the starburst galaxy NGC 253 and the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. Assuming constant cosmic-ray acceleration efficiency by supernova remnants with Milky-Way parameters, we calculate the cosmic-ray proton and primary and secondary electron/positron populations, predict the radio and gamma-ray spectra, and compare with published measurements. We find that our models easily fits the observed gamma-ray spectrum for NGC 253 while constraining the cosmic ray source spectral index and acceleration efficiency. However, we encountered difficultly modeling the observed radio data and constraining the speed of the galactic wind and the magnetic field strength, unless the gas mass is less than currently preferred values. Additionally, our starburst model consistently underestimates the observed gamma-ray flux and overestimates the radio flux for NGC 1068; these issues would be resolved if the AGN is the primary source of gamma-rays. We discuss the implications of these results and make predictions for the neutrino fluxes for both galaxies.

Abstract:A brief review of the indirect detection signatures of dark matter is given. In particular, detection methods of dark matter particle annihilation to antimatter and gamma-rays are reviewed. With the GLAST satellite soon to be launched, a crucial window in the energy range of a few GeV up to 300 GeV will open. The good angular and energy resolution of the instrument means that structures predicted by cold dark matter models can be searched for. Large, currently planned ground-based imaging Cherenkov telescope arrays, may further improve the limits, or discover a signal, if the current understanding of halo dark matter structure is correct.

Abstract:Starburst galaxies are well-motivated astrophysical emitters of high-energy gamma-rays. They are well-known cosmic-ray "reservoirs", thanks to their large magnetic fields which confine high-energy protons for $\sim 10^5$ years. Over such long times, cosmic-ray transport can be significantly affected by scatterings with sub-GeV dark matter. Here we point out that this scattering distorts the cosmic-ray spectrum, and the distortion can be indirectly observed by measuring the gamma-rays produced by cosmic-rays via hadronic collisions. Present gamma-ray data show no sign of such a distortion, leading to stringent bounds on the cross section between protons and dark matter. These are highly complementary with current bounds and have large room for improvement with the future gamma-ray measurements in the 0.1-10 TeV range from the Cherenkov Telescope Array, which can strengthen the limits by as much as two orders of magnitude.

Gamma Rays from Annihilations at the Galactic Center in a Physical Dark Matter Distribution

Abstract:We discuss the gamma-ray signal to be expected from dark matter (DM)annihilations at the Galactic Center. To describe the DM distribution in the Galactic halo we base on the Jeans equation for self-gravitating, anisotropic equilibria. In solving the Jeans equation, we adopt the specific correlation between the density \rho(r) and the velocity dispersion \sigma^2_r(r) expressed by the powerlaw behavior of the DM `entropy' K= \sigma_r^2/\rho^{2/3} ~ r^\alpha with \alpha ~ 1.25-1.3. Indicated (among others) by several recent N-body simulations, this correlation is privileged by the form of the radial pressure term in the Jeans equation, and yields a main body profile consistent with the classic self-similar development of DM halos. In addition, we require the Jeans solutions to satisfy regular boundary conditions both at the center (finite pressure, round gravitational potential) and in the outskirts (finite overall mass). With these building blocks we derive physical solutions, dubbed `\alpha-profiles'. We find the one with \alpha=1.25, suitable for the Galaxy halo, to be intrinsically flatter at the center relative to the empirical NFW formula, yet steeper than the empirical Einasto profile. So on scales of 10^{-1} deg it yields annihilation fluxes lower by a factor 5 than the former yet higher by a factor 10 than the latter; such fluxes will eventually fall within the reach of the Fermi satellite. We show the effectiveness of the \alpha-profile in relieving the astrophysical uncertainties related to the macroscopic DM distribution, and discuss its expected performance as a tool instrumental to interpret the upcoming gamma-ray data in terms of DM annihilation.

Abstract:The indirect detection of dark matter requires that dark matter annihilation products be discriminated from conventional astrophysical backgrounds. Here, we re-analyze GeV-band gamma-ray observations of the prominent Milky Way dwarf satellite galaxy Segue 1, for which the expected astrophysical background is minimal. We explicitly account for the angular extent of the conservatively expected gamma-ray signal and keep the uncertainty in the dark-matter profile external to the likelihood analysis of the gamma-ray data.

On the Interaction Between Cosmic Rays and Dark Matter Molecular Clouds in the Milky Way. l Basic Considerations

Abstract:We explore some basic observational consequences of assuming that the dark matter in the Milky Way consists mainly of molecular clouds, and that cosmic rays can penetrate these clouds. In a favoured model of the clouds, this penetration would have the following consequences, all of which agree with observation: (i) cosmic ray nuclei would be fragmented when they enter a cloud, giving them a lifetime in the Galaxy of $10^{15}$ sec (for relativistic nuclei). (ii) Pionic $\gamma$ rays emitted by the clouds, after pp collisions, would have a flux in the galactic plane comparable to the flux from known sources for photon energies $> \sim 1$ Gev. (iii) The heat input into the clouds from cosmic rays would be re-radiated mainly in the far infra-red. The resulting radiation background agrees, in both intensity and spectrum in different directions, with a known excess in the far $i - r$ background of the galaxy over emission by warm dust.

Gamma-Ray Background from Neutralino Annihilation in the First Cosmological Objects

Abstract:The paradigm of the neutralino dark matter predicts that the first gravitationally bound objects are earth-mass sized microhaloes, which would emit annihilation gamma-rays. Here we show that, though the flux from individual nearest microhaloes is extremely difficult to detect, meaningful constraints on their survival probability and internal density profile can be set by requiring that the galactic and extragalactic gamma-ray background flux from the microhaloes does not exceed the existing EGRET background data. Possible disruption of microhaloes by stellar encounters does not significantly reduce the background flux. If the probability for microhaloes to survive the hierarchical clustering process of dark matter is as large as indicated by a recent simulation, they could be a significant component of the observed background flux in some photon energy range, even with the standard annihilation cross section and conservative internal density profile of microhaloes. The integrated gamma-ray flux from microhaloes in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy may also be detectable by observations in the near future.

Abstract:We discuss a simple theory for physics beyond the Standard Model where a Majorana dark matter is predicted from anomaly cancellation. We discuss in detail the minimal theory where the baryon number is a local symmetry spontaneously broken at the low scale. The correlation between the cosmological constraints on the dark matter relic density, the direct detection and collider bounds is investigated. We discuss in great detail the gamma lines from dark matter annihilation showing the possibility to test these predictions in the near future at gamma-ray telescopes such as CTA. We investigate all processes contributing to the total photon flux from dark matter annihilation and point out the unique features that can be used to test this theory for dark matter.

Antistars as possible sources of antihelium cosmic rays

Abstract:A minor population of antistars in galaxies has been predicted by some of non-standard models of baryogenesis and nucleosynthesis in the early Universe, and their presence is not yet excluded by the currently available observations. Detection of an unusually high abundance of antinuclei in cosmic rays can probe the baryogenesis scenarios in the early Universe. Recent report of the \textit{AMS-02} collaboration on the tentative detection of a few antihelium nuclei in GeV cosmic rays provided a great hope on the progress in this issue. We discuss possible sources of antinuclei in cosmic rays from antistars which are predicted in a modified Affleck-Dine baryogenesis scenario by Dolgov and Silk (1993). The model allows us to estimate the expected fluxes and isotopic content of antinuclei in the GeV cosmic rays produced in scenarios involving antistars. We show that the flux of antihelium CRs reported by the \textit{AMS-02} experiment can be explained by Galactic anti-nova outbursts, thermonuclear anti-SN Ia explosions, a collection of flaring antistars or an extragalactic source with abundances not violating existing gamma-ray and microlensing constraints on the antistar population.

Abstract:The center of the our Galaxy is a region where very energetic phenomena take place. In particular, powerful cosmic ray sources can be located in that region. The cosmic rays accelerated in these sources may interact with ambient protons and/or low energy photons producing gamma rays and neutrinos. The observation of these two types of secondary particles can be very useful for the identification of the cosmic ray sources and for the understanding of the physical processes occurring during acceleration. Motivated by the excess in the neutrino spectrum recently reported by the IceCube Collaboration, we study in detail the shape of the gamma ray and neutrino spectra originating from the interaction of cosmic ray protons with ambient protons for sources located in the Galactic Center region. We consider different models for proton acceleration and study the impact on the gamma ray and neutrino spectra. We also discuss the possibility to constrain and even identify a particular neutrino source by using the information given by the gamma ray spectrum, taking advantage of the modification of the spectral shape caused by the interaction of the gamma rays with the photons of the radiation field present in the interstellar medium, which strongly depends on the source distance.

Abstract:We explore the hypothesis that the abundant presence of relativistic antimatter (positrons) in the primordial universe is the source of the intergalactic magnetic fields we observe in the universe today. We evaluate both Landau diamagnetic and magnetic dipole moment paramagnetic properties of the very dense primordial electron-positron $e^{+}e^{-}$-plasma, and obtain in quantitative terms the relatively small magnitude of the $e^{+}e^{-}$ magnetic moment polarization asymmetry required to produce a consistent self-magnetization in the universe.

Abstract:The most energetic astrophysical sources in the Milky Way, cosmic accelerators capable of producing high-energy cosmic rays, have resisted discovery for over a century. Up to now, astrophysicists sought these sources mainly by scouring the Galaxy for the gamma rays they are expected to emit. In 2023, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory discovered high-energy neutrinos from the Milky Way, inaugurating a telltale stream of evidence of cosmic-ray production and interaction in the Galaxy.

Abstract:Recent data released by James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and, somewhat earlier, the data presented by Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are commonly understood as a strong indication for breaking of the canonical $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. It is argued in the presented work that massive primordial black holes (PBH) could seed galaxy and quasar formation in the very young universe as it has been conjectured in our paper of 1993 and resolve the tension induced by the JWST and the HST data with the standard cosmology. This point of view is presently supported by several recent works. The proposed mechanism of PBH formation leads to the log-normal mass spectrum of PBHs and predicts abundant antimatter population of our Galaxy, Milky Way. Both these predictions are in excellent agreement with astronomical observations.
