Abstract:Statistical thermodynamics of small systems shows dramatic differences from normal systems. Parallel to the recently presented steady-state thermodynamic formalism for master equation and Fokker-Planck equation, we show that a ``thermodynamic'' theory can also be developed based on Tsallis' generalized entropy $S^{(q)}=\sum_{i=1}^N(p_i-p_i^q)/[q(q-1)]$ and Shiino's generalized free energy $F^{(q)}=[\sum_{i=1}^Np_i(p_i/\pi_i)^{q-1}-1]/[q(q-1)]$, where $\pi_i$ is the stationary distribution. $dF^{(q)}/dt=-f_d^{(q)}\le 0$ and it is zero iff the system is in its stationary state. $dS^{(q)}/dt-Q_{ex}^{(q)} = f_d^{(q)}$ where $Q_{ex}^{(q)}$ characterizes the heat exchange. For systems approaching equilibrium with detailed balance, $f_d^{(q)}$ is the product of Onsager's thermodynamic flux and force. However, it is discovered that the Onsager's force is non-local. This is a consequence of the particular transformation invariance for zero energy of Tsallis' statistics.

Abstract:The temperature dependent width of the fission fragment distributions was simulated in the Langevin equation by taking two-parameter exponential form of the fission fragment mass variance at scission point for each fission event. The result can reproduce experimental data well, and it permits to make reliable estimate for unmeasured product yields near symmetry fission.

Abstract:Nuclear fragmentation at excitation energies between ~10 MeV and 2 GeV is simulated by a microcanonical Metropolis sampling method. Contrary to the usual canonical description of compound nucleus decay the total energy, momentum, mass, and charge are strictly conserved quantities. No artificial heat bath is needed. The mass distributions and energy spectra are in good agreement with the data of nuclear fragmentations induced by highly energetic protons.

Abstract:A structural transition in the high-angle tilt grain-boundary (GB) was investigated by molecular-dynamics simulation. The calculations have been performed at various temperatures and the thermodynamic melting point Tm of the model system was determined by using a many-body potential fitted to copper. A thermal disorder transition in the GB region occurs well below the melting point. The results indicate that such a transition is a continuous process and there is no evidence of pre-melting, which is entirely in accord with experimental results and theoretical prediction. Moreover, it is also observed that melting initiates at the interface and then propagates into the bulk quickly at or above Tm.

Abstract:The incomplete-fusion-fragmentation model is used to analyze the fragmentation of the projectile remnant in the 600 MeV/u Au + Au reaction. The theoretical results of the mass number, the excitation energy, and the thermodynamic temperature of the projectile remnant agree well with experimental data. The backbending structure in the curve of temperature as a function of the excitation energy per nucleon, i.e., the evidence of liquid-gas phase transition, is reproduced and related to the decay mode transformation from the dominance of the multifragmentation mode to the vaporization mode.

Abstract:The hadronization of a high-energy parton is described by fragmentation functions which are introduced through QCD factorizations. While the hadronization mechanism per se remains uknown, fragmentation functions can still be investigated qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative study mainly concentrates on extracting genuine features based on the operator definition in quantum field theory. The quantitative research focuses on describing a variety of experimental data employing the fragmentation function given by the parameterizations or model calculations. With the foundation of the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization, the QCD evolution of leading twist transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions has also been established. In addition, the universality of fragmentation functions has been proven, albeit model-dependently, so that it is possible to perform a global analysis of experimental data in different high-energy reactions. The collective efforts may eventually reveal important information hidden in the shadow of nonperturbative physics. This review covers the following topics: transverse-momentum-dependent factorization and the corresponding QCD evolution, spin-dependent fragmentation functions at leading and higher twists, several experimental measurements and corresponding phenomenological studies, and some model calculations.

Abstract:Motivated to explore the dynamical mechanism of multi-fragmentation phase transition and expand our knowledge on the deterministic chaos in nonlinear dynamic process, we study systematically the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of heavy ion collisions at intermediate energy. In order to highlight the general characteristics of the collision dynamics, in the present paper, we simulate a simple collision system, Ca+Ca, and obverse the performances of the typical nonlinear characteristic quantities such as the production of generalized entropy and the fractal structure of the semiclassical phase space during the reaction process. The multifragmentation entropy, information dimension and the dynamical fluctuations of fragment mass distribution in the final state of the reaction are also evaluated. Our results about the intermediate processes and the final products of the reaction are verified mutually so that confirm strongly the existence of nonlinear chaos in the heavy ion collisions at intermediate energy. Meanwhile, we find that the typical characteristics of the critical phase transition obtained in the analysis of the final production of the reaction are relatively more clear in the vicinity of the incident energies E=100 MeV.

Abstract:The Incomplete-Fusion-Fragmentation Model has been used to reproduce nicely the experimental evidence of liquid-gas phase transition probed in the reaction of Au + Au at 600A MeV. The analysis of the relative yields of decay modes for the projectile remnant as a function of [Z(bound)] shows clearly the competition and transformation processes of various decay modes of projectile remnant with decreasing of [Z(bound)] The agreement between theoretical and experimental results for the analysis of relative yield of decay modes indicates that the experimental evidence of liquid-gas phase transition is composed of the decay mode transformations.

Abstract:The agreement between the fragments' internal and kinetic temperatures with the breakup temperature is investigated using a Statistical Multifragmentation Model which makes no a priori as- sumption on the relationship between them. We thus examine the conditions for obtaining such agreement and find that, in the framework of our model, this holds only in a relatively narrow range of excitation energy. The role played by the qualitative shape of the fragments' state densities is also examined. Our results suggest that the internal temperature of the light fragments may be affected by this quantity, whose behavior may lead to constant internal temperatures over a wide excitation energy range. It thus suggests that the nuclear thermometry may provide valuable information on the nuclear state density.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is fragile to thermal fluctuations, which raises the question whether finite temperature phase transitions support long-range entanglement similar to their zero temperature counterparts. Here we use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the third Renyi negativity, a generalization of entanglement negativity, as a proxy of mixed-state entanglement in the 2D transverse field Ising model across its finite temperature phase transition. We find that the area-law coefficient of the Renyi negativity is singular across the transition, while its subleading constant is zero within the statistical error. This indicates that the entanglement is short-range at the critical point despite a divergent correlation length. Renyi negativity in several exactly solvable models also shows qualitative similarities to that in the 2D transverse field Ising model.

Abstract:The mass yield and the charge dispersion of secondary fragments produced in high-energetic proton-xenon bombardment are analysed in the frame of our statistical multifragmentation model. The critical mass distribution as well as the charge dispersion, which have led to the discussion of a nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, are easily reproduced within our model. A clear signal of a “phase transition” at T=5 MeV is found and is analysed in terms of various multifragment correlations.

Abstract:We use two available methods, the Duhem-Gibbs relation and the entropy formula in terms of particle phase-space distributions, to calculate the entropy in a quark combination model. The entropy of the system extracted from the Duhem-Gibbs relation is found to increase in hadronization if the average temperature of the hadronic phase is lower than that of the quark phase. The increase of the entropy can also be confirmed from the entropy formula if the volume of the hadronic phase is larger than $2.5$--$3.0$ times that of the quark phase. So whether the entropy increases or decreases during combination depends on the temperature before and after combination and on how much expansion the system undergoes during combination. The current study provides an example to shed light on the entropy issue in the quark combination model.

Abstract:In this study, we systematically investigate the dynamics of various particles namely π+, π−, K+, K−, p, ̄p, Λ, ̄Λ, Ξ− and ̄Ξ+ produced in central Au-Au collisions. We analyze data of AGS and RHIC, which span a broad range of collision energies, ranging from √sN N = 1.9 to 200 GeV. To analyze the transverse momentum (pT ) and transverse mass (mT ) distributions, we employ a two-component standard distribution function, achieving a very good representation of the experimental data across these energy regimes. We extract key thermodynamic parameters, including the effective temperature T , the mean transverse momentum ⟨pT ⟩, and the initial temperature Ti, and analyze their dependence on the values of collision energy and particle mass. Our findings reveal a distinct transition behaviour around √sN N = 19.6 GeV. Below √sN N = 19.6 GeV, the values of T , ⟨pT ⟩, and Ti increase monotonically for all particles due to higher energy transfer into the system. Above this energy threshold, these extracted parameters plateau, suggesting that the additional energy is utilized as latent heat for phase transition rather than increasing the system's temperature. These observations delineate two distinct regions: a baryon-dominated region at lower energies and a parton-dominated region at higher energies, each potentially indicative of different phases of matter, with the latter possibly signalling the onset of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). The study thus provides critical insights into the complex interplay of thermodynamics, phase transitions, and particle interactions in high-energy Au-Au collisions.

Abstract:The saddle-to-scission dynamics of the induced fission process is explored using a microscopic finite-temperature model based on time-dependent nuclear density functional theory (TDDFT), that allows to follow the evolution of local temperature along fission trajectories. Starting from a temperature that corresponds to the experimental excitation energy of the compound system, the model propagates the nucleons along isentropic paths toward scission. For the four illustrative cases of induced fission of $^{240}$Pu, $^{234}$U, $^{244}$Cm, and $^{250}$Cf, characteristic fission trajectories are considered, and the partition of the total energy into various kinetic and potential energy contributions at scission is analyzed, with special emphasis on the energy dissipated along the fission path and the prescission kinetic energy. The model is also applied to the dynamics of neck formation and rupture, characterized by the formation of few-nucleon clusters in the low-density region between the nascent fragments.

Abstract:The studies of thermal fission rates are relevant to novel reactors,astrophysical environments,and survival probabilities of compound superheavy nuclei.This has been conventionally studied by the Bohr-Wheeler statistical model that depends on phenomenological level densities and fission barriers.In this context,we propose to study the thermal fission rates based on microscopic temperature dependent nuclear energy density functional theory.The microscopic temperature dependent fission barrier heights and curvatures,and collective mass parameters can be self-consistently obtained.The fission lifetimes from low to high temperatures can be given by the imaginary free energy method in a consistent framework.Microscopic temperature dependent fission barriers play an essential role in fission studies.

Abstract:Although partition temperature derived using the Darwin–Fowler method is exact for simple scenarios, the derivation for complex systems might reside in specific approximations whose viability is not ensured if the thermodynamic limit is not attained. This work elaborates on a related problem relevant to relativistic high-energy collisions. On the one hand, it is simple enough that closed-form expressions can be obtained precisely for the one-particle distribution function. On the other hand, the resulting expression is not an exponential form, and therefore, it is not straightforward that the notion of partition function could be implied. Specifically, we derive the one-particle distribution function for massless particles where the phase-space integration is performed exactly for the underlying canonical ensemble consisting of a given number of particles. We discuss the viability of the partition temperature in this case. Possible implications of the obtained results regarding the observed Tsallis distribution in transverse momentum spectra in high-energy collisions are also addressed.

Abstract:We perform Hartree calculations of symmetric and asymmetric semi-infinite nuclear matter in the framework of relativistic models based on effective hadronic field theories as recently proposed in the literature. In addition to the conventional cubic and quartic scalar self-interactions, the extended models incorporate a quartic vector self-interaction, scalar-vector non-linearities and tensor couplings of the vector mesons. We investigate the implications of these terms on nuclear surface properties such as the surface energy coefficient, surface thickness, surface stiffness coefficient, neutron skin thickness and the spin-orbit force.

Fragmentation of Neutron Star Matter

Abstract:Background: Neutron stars are astronomical systems with nucleons submitted to extreme conditions. Due to the long range coulomb repulsion between protons, the system has structural inhomogeneities. These structural inhomogeneities arise also in expanding systems, where the fragment distribution is highly dependent on the thermodynamic conditions (temperature, proton fraction, ...) and the expansion velocity. Purpose: We aim to find the different regimes of fragment distribution, and the existence of infinite clusters. Method: We study the dynamics of the nucleons with a semiclassical molecular dynamics model. Starting with an equilibrium configuration, we expand the system homogeneously until we arrive to an asymptotic configuration (i. e. very low final densities). We study the fragment distribution throughout this expansion. Results: We found the typical regimes of the asymptotic fragment distribution of an expansion: u-shaped, power law and exponential. Another key feature in our calculations is that, since the interaction between protons is long range repulsive, we do not have always an infinite fragment. We found that, as expected, the faster the expansion velocity is, the quicker the infinite fragment disappears. Conclusions: We have developed a novel graph-based tool for the identification of infinite fragments, and found a transition from U-shaped to exponential fragment mass distribution with increasing expansion rate.
