Abstract:It is proved in this paper that special generalized ultrametric and special matrices are, in a sense, extremal matrices in the boundary of the set of generalized ultrametric and matrices, respectively. Moreover, we present a new class of inverse M-matrices which generalizes the class of matrices.

Abstract:The paper concerns with the closure properties of generalized ultrametric matrices.It is proved that when A is a nonsingular generalized ultrametric matrix,then the Hadamard product A o AT is also a generalized ultrametric matrix and its inverse is an Mmatrix.We also give a sufficient condition of Hadamard-closed when A,B are two generalized ultrametric matrices.Lastly,the Perron complements and sums of generalized ultrametric matrices are also discussed.

Abstract:In this article, we characterize generalized ultrametric matrices whose inverses are tree-diagonal. This generalizes the results of McDonald, Nabben, Neumann, Schneider and Tsatsomeros for tri-diagonal matrices.

Abstract:This paper studies block matrices A = [A(ij)] is an element of C-km (x) (km), where every block A(ij) is an element of C-k (x) (k) for i, j is an element of < m > = {1, 2, . . ., m} and A(ii) is non-Hermitian positive definite for all i is an element of < m >. Such a matrix is called an extended H-matrix if its block comparison matrix is a generalized M-matrix. Matrices of this type are an extension of generalized M-matrices proposed by Elsner and Mehrmann [L. Elsner and V. Mehrmann. Convergence of block iterative methods for linear systems arising in the numerical solution of Euler equations. Numer. Math., 59: 541-559, 1991.] and generalized H-matrices by Nabben [R. Nabben. On a class of matrices which arise in the numerical solution of Euler equations. Numer. Math., 63:411-431, 1992.]. This paper also discusses some properties including positive definiteness and invariance under block Gaussian elimination of a subclass of extended H-matrices, especially, convergence of some block iterative methods for linear systems with such a subclass of extended H-matrices. Furthermore, the incomplete LDU-factorization of these matrices is investigated and applied to establish some convergent results on some iterative methods. Finally, this paper generalizes theory on generalized H-matrices and answers the open problem proposed by R. Nabben.
On generalized metrics of Vandermonde type

Abstract:In a series of papers in the 1960's, S. Gähler defined and investigated so-called m-metric spaces and their topological properties. An m-metric assigns to any tuple of m+1 elements a real value (more generally an element in a partially odered set) which satisfies the generalized metric axioms of semidefiniteness, symmetry, and simplex inequality. In this contribution we consider a new type of generalized metric which is based on the Vandermonde determinant. We present some remarkable geometric consequences of the corresponding simplex inequality in the complex plane. Then we show that the Vandermonde principle of construction extends to linear spaces of arbitrary dimension by using symmetric multilinear maps of degree m(m + 1)/2. In particular, we analyze when this generalized metrics has the stronger property of definiteness. Finally, an application is provided to the m-metric of point sets when driven by the same linear ordinary differential equation.

Abstract:In this article we study which infinite matrices are potential matrices. We tackle this problem in the ultrametric framework by studying infinite tree matrices and ultrametric matrices. For each tree matrix, we show the existence of an associated symmetric random walk and study its Green potential. We provide a representation theorem for harmonic functions that includes simple expressions for any increasing harmonic function and the Martin kernel. For ultrametric matrices, we supply probabilistic conditions to study its potential properties when immersed in its minimal tree matrix extension.

Abstract:The concept of the Perron complement of a nonnegative and irreducible matrix was introduced by Meyer in 1989 and it was used to construct an algorithm for computing the stationary distribution vector for Markov chains. Here properties of the generalized Perron complement of an n x n irreducible Z-matrix K are considered. First the result that the generalized Perron complements of K are irreducible Z-matrices is shown, and other properties are presented.
A Matrix Generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya Rearrangement Inequality and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya rearrangement inequality to positive definite matrices. The inequality can be seen as a commutation principle in the sense of Iusem and Seeger. An important instrument in the proof is a first-order perturbation formula for a certain spectral function, which could be of independent interests. The inequality is then extended to rectangular matrices. Using our main results, we derive new inequalities for several distance-like functions encountered in various signal processing or machine learning applications.

Abstract:We introduce M-tensors. This concept extends the concept of M-matrices. We denote Z-tensors as the tensors with nonpositive off-diagonal entries. We show that M-tensors must be Z-tensors and the maximal diagonal entry must be nonnegative. The diagonal elements of a symmetric M-tensor must be nonnegative. A symmetric M-tensor is copositive. Based on the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors, we show that the minimal value of the real parts of all eigenvalues of an M-tensor is its smallest H+-eigenvalue and also is its smallest H-eigenvalue. We show that a Z-tensor is an M-tensor if and only if all its H+-eigenvalues are nonnegative. Some further spectral properties of M-tensors are given. We also introduce strong M-tensors, and some corresponding conclusions are given. In particular, we show that all H-eigenvalues of strong M-tensors are positive. We apply this property to study the positive definiteness of a class of multivariate forms associated with Z-tensors. We also propose an algorithm for testing the positive definiteness of such a multivariate form.
Tight general bounds for the extremal numbers of 0-1 matrices

Abstract:A zero-one matrix $M$ is said to contain another zero-one matrix $A$ if we can delete some rows and columns of $M$ and replace some $1$-entries with $0$-entries such that the resulting matrix is $A$. The extremal number of $A$, denoted $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)$, is the maximum number of $1$-entries that an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix can have without containing $A$. The systematic study of this function for various patterns $A$ goes back to the work of Füredi and Hajnal from 1992, and the field has many connections to other areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science. The problem has been particularly extensively studied for so-called acyclic matrices, but very little is known about the general case (that is, the case where $A$ is not necessarily acyclic). We prove the first asymptotically tight general result by showing that if $A$ has at most $t$ $1$-entries in every row, then $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)\leq n^{2-1/t+o(1)}$. This verifies a conjecture of Methuku and Tomon.

Abstract:A new subclass of H -matrices named generalized (for shortly, ) matrices is introduced and some properties of matrices are presented. The relationship between matrices and other subclasses of H -matrices is studied. Moreover, the infinity norm bounds for the inverse of matrices are provided. Using the proposed infinity norm bounds, error bounds of the linear complementarity problems for matrices are given, which improve some existing results. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the validity of new results.

Abstract:The problem of diagonalizing a class of complicated matrices, to be called ultrametric matrices, is investigated. These matrices appear at various stages in the description of disordered systems with many equilibrium phases by the technique of replica symmetry breaking. The residual symmetry, remaining after the breaking of permutation symmetry between replicas, allows us to bring all ultrametric matrices to a block diagonal form by a common similarity transformation. A large number of these blocks are, in fact, of size 1 times 1, i.e. in a vast sector the transformation actually diagonalizes the matrix. In the other sectors we end up with blocks of size (R+1) times (R+1) where R is the number of replica symmetry breaking steps. These blocks cannot be further reduced without giving more information, in addition to ultrametric symmetry, about the matrix. Similar results for the inverse of a generic ultrametric matrix are also derived.

The Extremals of Minkowski's Quadratic Inequality

Abstract:In a seminal paper "Volumen und Oberfläche" (1903), Minkowski introduced the basic notion of mixed volumes and the corresponding inequalities that lie at the heart of convex geometry. The fundamental importance of characterizing the extremals of these inequalities was already emphasized by Minkowski himself, but has to date only been resolved in special cases. In this paper, we completely settle the extremals of Minkowski's quadratic inequality, confirming a conjecture of R. Schneider. Our proof is based on the representation of mixed volumes of arbitrary convex bodies as Dirichlet forms associated to certain highly degenerate elliptic operators. A key ingredient of the proof is a quantitative rigidity property associated to these operators.

Abstract:It is a theorem of Casson and Rivin that the complete hyperbolic metric on a cusp end ideal triangulated 3-manifold maximizes volume in the space of all positive angle structures. We show that the conclusion still holds if some of the tetrahedra in the complete metric are flat.

Abstract:The permanent of a multidimensional matrix is the sum of products of entries over all diagonals. By Minc's conjecture, there exists a reachable upper bound on the permanent of 2-dimensional (0,1)-matrices. In this paper we obtain some generalizations of Minc's conjecture to the multidimensional case. For this purpose we prove and compare several bounds on the permanent of multidimensional (0,1)-matrices. Most estimates can be used for matrices with nonnegative bounded entries.

Abstract:We study and characterize the inclusion relations of global classes in the general weight matrix framework in terms of growth relations for the defining weight matrices. We consider the Roumieu and Beurling cases, and as a particular case we also treat the classical weight function and weight sequence cases. Moreover, we construct a weight sequence which is oscillating around any weight sequence which satisfies some minimal conditions and, in particular, around the critical weight sequence $(p!)^{1/2}$, related with the non-triviality of the classes. Finally, we also obtain comparison results both on classes defined by weight functions that can be defined by weight sequences and conversely.

Cn?m, the set of all n by m complex matrices, Mosic and Stanimirovic [14] introduced the composite OMP inverse of A by its outer inverse with the prescribed range, null space and Moore-Penrose inverse. This inverse unifies the core inverse, DMP inverse and Moore-Penrose inverse. In this paper, we mainly introduce and investigate a class of generalized inverses in complex matrices. Also, it is proved that this generalized inverse coincides with the OMP inverse. Finally, the defined inverse is related to OMP-inverses, W-core inverses and (b, c)-core inverses in the context of matrices.

Abstract:The Multivariate Hensel Lemma for local rings is usually proved as a consequence of the Grothendieck version of Zariski's Main Theorem. This version deals with a more general situation that is a priori much more difficult. In this paper, we give a direct proof of the Multivariate Hensel Lemma for ultrametric fields, in the framework of constructive mathematics and without using~ZMT. In the framework of classical mathematics, our result entails the Lemma for rank-one valued fields.
