Abstract:Numerous researches are found on The Book of Songs as it is a Confucian classic.Since the Wanli Period of Ming Dynasty,there appeared many literary commentaries which had long been criticized as heresy by some scholars.These works,however,actually open up a new path for the study of The Book of Songs,meeting readers’aesthetic expectations as well as the imperial examination demand of that time.Hence,they were not only well accepted by those scholars who have vision but also became quite popular among the general public in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.These literary commentaries play a positive role in the research and the popularity of the ancient classic.As the valuable legacy of the Chinese literary theory,they are worth further study.

Abstract:The Book of Songs is an important part of Chinese traditional culture and enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. This article is based on Turi’s theory of translation norms, and takes the English translation of The Book of Songs · Jing Jing by Richard Jacob and Xu Yuanchong as the research object. Comparative studies are made on the historical nature of understanding, the normativeness of translation, and the application of the fusion of horizons in the two versions of the Book of Songs. Incorporating history into translation brings the translation closer to the roots of history. The comparative research method proposed in this article can be widely used in various ancient literature studies, and has important theoretical and application values.

Abstract:Yang Zhishui's New Evidence for Descriptions of Names in the Book of Songs, Yao Xiao ou's The Three Odes in The Book of Songs and the Pre-Qin Ritual and Music Culture, and Li Shan's The Several Illustrated Pieces in Ya of The Book of Songs and the Partial Equivalence Discovered Hereafter between Ya and Song are, among other things, the key accomplishments in the studies of The Book of Songs in recent years. While they insist on the agreement between The Book of Songs and the ritual - music culture from different levels, these works also attempt to explore the actualities of The Three Hundred Pieces in The Book of Songs, and therefore are all aimed at their "primitiveness," burdened with the heavy load of tradition.

Abstract:At the end of the Ming dynasty the initiative was taken in the edition that collected together for complete works the total output of literature by period.The practice remained up to the Qing dynasty when there came out Quantangshi and Quantangwen,etc.,and commanded popular attention in academic circles.And since modem times Chinese scholars have poured out tremendous enthusiasm for the compilation of such types of works especially for the last twenty years.The works,to their knowledge,have achieved more than forty types,which were published one after another or whose compilations are well under Way.The range almost includes works of all genres composed in difierent historical period.Such publications in vast number are by no means certain to exert a dominant influence on the twenty.first century study of Chinese literature and history,and scholars should place the overwhelming importance on some common problems that have come up from such compilations.

Abstract:Collection of Poems and Essays of Double Willow Pavilion(Shuangliuxuan Shiwen Ji)is a primary collection compiled by the famous writer Yuan Mei of the Qing Dynasty in his early age,and The Complete Works of Yuan Mei(Yuanmei Quanji)is the modern edition of The Complete Works of Xiaocangshan House(Xiaocnagshan Fang Quanji)compiled when he was old.With the example of the collation on the two books,this paper indicates that there is always the incomplete historical appearance in most of the traditional complete works,due to the revision and recompilation when the writers are old.Therefore,when one studies the diachronic research referring to the works of a traditional writer,emphasis should be put on the primary collection which contains much truer historical information rather than the complete works.

Abstract:Editing and disseminating are the main dissemination forms of ancient books,and its intellectual meanings need to be properly explored.The two existing Song Dynasty editions of Liu Kezhuang Nan Yue Gao and Hou Cun Xian Sheng Shi Ji Da Quan,have demonstrated two different kinds of compiling ideas:selection and collection.Based on this two different compiling perspectives,we can find out valuable academic information which contains not just unique routeway of interpretating Liu Kezhuang's aesthetic turns,but also profitable materials on understanding the literary thoughts of the Song Dynasty.

Abstract:It has been "criticized" and thereby discussed on that The Song of Justice is excluded out of Qian Zhongshu's Annotated Selection of Song Poetry. Why Ogawa Tamaki(小川环树), a Japanese scholar, apologized for Qian's right to stick to his criteria of literary criticism in a related commentary has remained an unsolved question until the recent publication of The Collection of Qian Zhongshu's Manuscripts. In fact, abundant poetizing contents are revealed in it, showing that Qian stressed on "literary ontology ". For this reason, Qian offered a copy of Annotated Selection of Song Poetry to Ogawa Tamaki and gave more than ninety alternations and amendments to it by handwriting, which has provided a vivid example for studying Annotated Selection of Song Poetry.

Abstract:The Book of Songs was commissioned by Ian Bostridge and Xuefei Yang. The first performance was given by Robin Tritschler and Xuefei Yang at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe, London, 30th November 2014. The work was toured by Ian Bostridge and Xuefei Yang in the UK, Norway, Germany, Hong Kong, China, and South Korea in October and November 2015. The Book of Songs is the oldest existing collection of Chinese poetry. The three hundred poems date from the 11th to 7th centuries BC and illustrate many aspects of private and public life – courtship, marriage, lamentation, separation, fighting, feasting, singing, dancing, and drinking. This song cycle draws on poems from the Book of Songs and on other sources of ancient Chinese poetry. The folksong-like opening poem concerns the exchange of gifts in early courtship. In contrast, Oh, You with the Blue Collar is introspective and melancholic – why does the singer’s young lover no longer visit? The third song describes a trip by two lovers to pluck rushes. Somehow they do not manage to pick a single handful all day. Pastoral, for guitar solo, is a contemplation of the countryside in springtime, with soft breeze blowing in the long grass and tall trees. This interlude is taken from the companion piece Illustrations to the Book of Songs (2014) for solo guitar. In the Tavern considers the temptation of drink and Lament evokes the pain of the loss of a loved one. The name “Xuefei” is taken from The Book of Songs.

Defining the “Finest”: A Northern Song View of Tang Dynasty Literary Culture in the Wen cui

Abstract:In the reception of Tang literature during the Song Dynasty, the anthology Wen cui 文粹 (Literature's Finest), compiled by the Northern Song scholar Yao Xuan 姚鉉 (968–1020) in 1011, survives as the earliest attempt by an individual scholar to provide a comprehensive overview of Tang literature. The Wen cui collected over two thousand pieces of prose and poetry, making it the largest anthology of Tang literature to circulate widely in the Song and later dynasties in multiple editions. It became famous for its polemical views of “excellence” in Tang literature, which are laid out in the preface to the anthology, and focused its selections on mid-Tang writers, especially those associated with Han Yu 韓愈 (768–824) and antiquity. In this essay, the author demonstrates that the Wen cui vision of the “finest” Tang literature was more nuanced and carefully constructed than its later reputation as simply a guwen 古文 (ancient-style prose) anthology would suggest. By analyzing the claims of the preface, Yao Xuan's unusual organizational strategies, and some key theoretical texts in the “letters discussing literature” section of the anthology, the author shows that Yao Xuan used his selections to defend the necessity of wenzhang 文章 (literary composition) in governance and literati culture more broadly defined. Although this view of literature's importance was challenged by later Daoxue adherents, the Wen cui gives us an important window on the more catholic and diverse conceptions of literature's place in the culture that flourished in the early years of the Song Dynasty.

Abstract:The common edition of The Old Tang History has many omission on the word.Now the scholars can't revise because the Song edition is incomplete seriously.The Yeshijun-collated edition that is found recently was collated on the basis. of the copy-Song edition of ChenCha Zhile Building of Ming Dynasty in Changshu.There are 65 volumes that the extant Song edition hasn't. It is a valuable remedy for the fragmentary Song edition .This dissertation attempts to make a full and accurate research on the circulation of the copy edition of ChenCha's Zhile Building and the Yeshijun-collated edition.From it we know the copy edition of Zhile Building was already incomplete at the beginning of Qing Dynasty.Henceforth it is lost.But the Yeshijun-collated edition which was considered losting is preserved in the Hunan Library.The most valuable part is the Benji through the illustration with examples on the value of Yeshijun-collated edition.

Abstract:This article, based on analysis and interpretation of the Four Treasures of the Study ( wenfang sibao ), examines the role played by the Southern Tang in enriching Song literati culture. With the success of cultural rejuvenation, the Jianghuai region would become essential to fulfilling the function. Despite that the wenfang sibao originated in a weak southern kingdom, such roots did not affect their eminent image in the slightest. The profound impact of the wenfang sibao upon Song literati culture manifested itself in numerous ways, ranging from enriching connoisseurship and esthetic appreciation to the perpetuation of artistic beauty. Rigorous searches for esthetic artifacts found outside of China by Song literati not only posed challenges to the eminent position of wenfang sibao originating in the Southern Tang, but also necessitated the rethinking of what Huayi zhibian , Sino-barbarian dichotomy, exactly meant in Song China. As a whole, the study of the Nan Tang wenfang sibao substantiates regional legacy as a valid concept for the study of Song literati culture.

Abstract:This study examined the major contents of some 70 kinds of tea rites and eight kinds of tea books from Song Dynasty based on A Collection of Chinese Historical Materials on Tea Leaves (中國茶葉歷史資料選集) compiled by Jin Jo Gyu and Ju Ja Jin. In China, the writing of books on tea started with Tea Classic(茶經) by Yuku in Tang. In Song Dynasty, a hefty 30% of Chinese ancient books on tea were published, including Cheonmyeongrok by Dogok, Darok by Chaeyang, Yongcharokhuseo by Gu Yang Su, Pumchayorok by Hwang Yu, Donggyesidarok by Song Ja An, Daegwandaron by Emperor Huizong Zhao Ji, SeonhwaBukwonGongChaRok written by Woongbeon(熊蕃), and Bukwonbyeolrok by Jo Yeo Ryeo. In Song, some 70 kinds of tea rites were further enriched by literati s literary talent and emotion such as the writing of poems or literary commentaries. In those times in Song, many literati, scholars, and government officials were the very masters of teas, and they created the harmonious beauty and deep mental world into poems, calligraphies and paintings, from their tea life. In particular, most of books on tea published in Dynasty feature many contents of tribute tea. Nearly all authors of tea books were government officials in charge of tea rites in Bukwon, including officials responsible for transporting grains as taxes in Bukwon, Geonan. The books recorded the authors first-hand experience, detailing the entire process of making tea from cultivation to collection to drying, as well as kinds of tribute tea. Books on tea published in Song are important historical materials for researching Song s tea industry and tea culture. Song s tea culture reached the loftiest level in the history of China. Considering the times publication circumstances and expansive geographical scope, however, the distribution of books on tea and exchange of knowledge presumably were not facilitated. Due to such circumstances, Song s books on tea were generally written based on compilers experience, observation and knowledge.

Abstract:When examining songs in Chinese literature, we can distinguish among literary, musical, and communal aspects of their circulation. Sanqu songs became popular in the form of musical texts in the Yuan and Ming dynasties, but the ci song lyrics, by the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279) if not earlier, had already become a form of communal text in a broad sense. While relying on musical and literary aspects in the early stages of circulation, such ci song lyrics also became increasingly meaningful as social artifacts characterized by diverse forms of usage and participation, and they have been widely appreciated as a "literary-cultural phenomenon" unrelated to music per se. Standard histories of Chinese literature typically interpret the interaction between Song dynasty ci song lyrics and Yuan dynasty sanqu songs and song-drama as a natural evolution of literary forms. To be sure, these histories address the vitality of the musicality and popular nature of such songs while also paying attention to the artistic styles, inherent characters, and originality of sanqu song composition (tige xingfen). From such an analysis, however, we know very little about the textual forms and mechanisms of transmission of Yuan-Ming sanqu songs beyond the realm of music and songwriters. In this regard, this article explores whether it was possible for the ci song lyrics, as a literary genre of greater maturity and higher status, albeit divorced from music, to transfer its literary experience to sanqu songs. Such a line of inquiry is also relevant to the study of the survival of various forms of Chinese musical literature beyond their original environments. It also helps us think about the complex relationships between the musical and communal functions of ci song lyrics and sanqu songs.
