Abstract:This paper presents a condition in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) for the quadratic stability of discrete-time interval 2-D systems. With Matlab, it is very convenient to solve this problem. Necessity shows that the condition is less conservative in some cases. The illustrative example shows that this method is effective to check the quadratic stability of discrete-time interval 2-D systems.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition was presented for the quadratic stability of interval matrices and a related calculation method of stability margin. The results were obtained in terms of LMIs. With the powerful LMI toolbox, it was very convenient to solve this problem. Examples showed that this method is effective in determining the robust stability and related stability margin of interval matrices.

Abstract:An equivalence between attainability of simultaneous diagonalization (SD) and hidden convexity in quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) stimulates us to investigate necessary and sufficient SD conditions, which is one of the open problems posted by Hiriart-Urruty (SIAM Rev., 49 (2007), pp. 255-273) nine years ago. In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient SD condition for any two real symmetric matrices and offer a necessary and sufficient SD condition for any finite collection of real symmetric matrices under the existence assumption of a semi-definite matrix pencil. Moreover, we apply our SD conditions to QCQP, especially with one or two quadratic constraints, to verify the exactness of its second-order cone programming relaxation and to facilitate the solution process of QCQP.

Abstract:Consider a quasi-linear system of two Klein–Gordon equations with masses m1, m2. We prove that when m1≠2m2 and m2≠2m1, such a system has global solutions for small, smooth, compactly supported Cauchy data. This extends a result proved by Sunagawa (J. Differential Equations 192 (2) (2003) 308) in the semi-linear case. Abstract:We analyze the fulfillment of the simultaneous diagonalization (SD via congruence) property for any two real matrices, and develop sufficient conditions expressed in different way to those appeared in the last few years. These conditions are established under a different perspective, and in any case, they supplement and clarify other similar results published elsewhere. Following our point of view reflected in a previous work, we offer some necessary and sufficient conditions, different in nature to those in Jiang and Li (SIAM J Optim 26:1649–1668, 2016), for SD: roughly speaking our approach is more geometric and needs to compute images and kernels of matrices; whereas that in Jiang and Li (SIAM J Optim 26:1649–1668, 2016) requires to compute determinant and canonical forms. The bidimensional situation is particularly analyzed, providing new more precise characterizations than those in higher dimension and joint those given earlier by the authors. In addition, we also establish the connection of our characterization of SD with that provided in Jiang and Li (SIAM J Optim 26:1649–1668, 2016).

Abstract:We employ the M-P inverses and ranks of quaternion matrices to establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for solving a system of the dual quaternion matrix equations $(AX, XC) = (B, D)$, along with providing an expression for its general solution. Serving as an application, we investigate the solutions to the dual quaternion matrix equations $AX = B$ and $XC=D$, including $\eta$-Hermitian solutions. Lastly, we design a numerical example to validate the main research findings of this paper.

New notions of simultaneous diagonalizability of quadratic forms with applications to QCQPs

Abstract:A set of quadratic forms is simultaneously diagonalizable via congruence (SDC) if there exists a basis under which each of the quadratic forms is diagonal. This property appears naturally when analyzing quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) and has important implications in this context. This paper extends the reach of the SDC property by studying two new related but weaker notions of simultaneous diagonalizability. Specifically, we say that a set of quadratic forms is almost SDC (ASDC) if it is the limit of SDC sets and d-restricted SDC (d-RSDC) if it is the restriction of an SDC set in up to d-many additional dimensions. Our main contributions are a complete characterization of the ASDC pairs and the nonsingular ASDC triples, as well as a sufficient condition for the 1-RSDC property for pairs of quadratic forms. Surprisingly, we show that every singular pair is ASDC and that almost every pair is 1-RSDC. We accompany our theoretical results with preliminary numerical experiments applying the RSDC property to QCQPs with a single quadratic constraint.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behaviour of global classical solutions of diagonalizable quasilinear hyperbolic systems with linearly degenerate characteristic fields. Based on the existence results of global classical solutions, we prove that when t tends to infinity, the solution approaches a combination of C-1 travelling wave solutions, provided that L-1 boolean AND L-infinity norm of the initial data as well as its derivative are bounded. A revisit to the stability of spatially interconnected systems

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition is derived in this paper for the stability of a linear time invariant (LTI) multidimensional (MD) dynamic system. This condition is expressed by a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A special characteristic of this condition is that although the number of LMIs increases exponentially with the spatial dimension of the system, the dimensions of the LMIs are identical to each other and are of the same order as those of system matrices. Moreover, both the number and the dimensions of the LMIs are explicitly given. These properties make the derived condition particularly attractive when the spatial dimensions are low that are frequently encountered in practical applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive some practical necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution to a new system of coupled two-sided Sylvester-like matrix equations with arbitrary number of equations and unknowns over the quaternion algebra. As applications, we give some practical necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an η -Hermitian solution to a system of quaternion matrix equations in terms of ranks. We also use graphs to represent linear mappings associated with some Sylvester-type systems. As a special case of the main theorem, we prove a conjecture is correct, which was proposed in [Linear Algebra Appl. 2016;496:549–593]. The main findings of this paper widely extend almost all the known results in the literature.

Abstract:The real Jacobian conjecture claims that if $F=\left(f^1,\ldots,f^n\right):\mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ is a polynomial map such that $\det DF$ is nowhere zero, then $F$ is a global injective. The first part is to study the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture via the method of the qualitative theory of dynamical systems. By Bendixson compactification, an induced polynomial differential system can be obtained from the Hamiltonian system associated to polynomial map $F$. We prove that the following statements are equivalent: (A) $F$ is a global injective; (B) the origin of induced system is a center; (C) the origin of induced system is a monodromic singular point; (D) the origin of induced system has no hyperbolic sectors; (E) induced system has a $C^k$ first integral with an isolated minimun at the origin and $k\in\mathbb{N}^{+}\cup\{\infty\}$. Moreover, applying the above results we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of the two-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture, which is an algebraic criterion. By definition a criterion function, $F$ is a global injective if and only if the limit of criterion function is infinite as $\left|x\right|+\left|y\right|$ tends to infinity. This algebraic criterion improves the main result of Braun et al [J. Differential Equations {\bf 260} (2016) 5250-5258]. In the second part, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the $n$-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture is obtained. Using the tool from the nonlinear functional analysis, $F$ is a global injective if and only if $\parallel F\left(\mathbf{x}\right)\parallel$ approaches to infinite as $\parallel\mathbf{x}\parallel\rightarrow\infty$, which is a generalization of the above algebraic criterion. As an application, we give an alternate proof of the Cima's result on the $n$-dimensional real Jacobian conjecture [Nonlinear Anal. {\bf 26} (1996) 877-885].

Our main result shows that each matrix , which corresponds to an elliptic quaternionic Möbius transformation , could be -similar to a diagonal matrix. Moreover, one can see that each elliptic quaternionic Möbius transformation is quaternionic Möbius conjugate to a bi-rotation, where a bi-rotation means a map for some with .

Abstract:This paper deals with the global exact controllability for first-order quasilinear hyperbolic systems of diagonal form with linearly degenerate characteristics. When the system has no zero characteristics, we establish the global exact boundary controllability from one arbitrarily preassigned C1 data to another by means of a constructive method, in which the desired boundary controls can be acted either on both sides or only on one side. Sharp estimates on the exact controllable time are given in both cases. When the system has some zero characteristics, the global exact controllability is also established.

Abstract:In order to solve the decoupling problem of a quadratic vibration system, the diagonalizable condition for a quadratic vibration system and its corresponding proof were given, and an isospectral construction decoupling algorithm was proposed here. Numerical test was presented to verify the accuracy of decoupling condition and to realize isospectral decoupling of a two-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system and to compare its eigenvalues with decoupling approximations. The results showed thatthe decoupling method is simple and the decoupled system is isospectral as the original system, and the decoupling condition is suitable to all quadratic vibration systems with nonsingular mass matrix.

Abstract:Nonsingularity of a matrix is investigated in this technical note that depends affinely on several uncertainty matrices whose real and imaginary parts are constrained by some quadratic forms. Based on some equivalent descriptions for these uncertainty matrices, a sufficient condition is derived. This condition is given in a linear matrix inequality form and can in principle be efficiently validated. The obtained result includes some well known results in systems and control theory as a special case, such as the Lyapunov equation based stability criterion for linear time invariant systems, the (D,G)-scaling based upper bound for the mixed structured singular value, a sufficient condition for the stability of spatially interconnected systems, etc. A computationally verifiable condition is also provided that indicates situations under which the aforementioned condition becomes necessary.
