Identification of the Perception and Conservation of Chinese National Parks as Cultural Landscapes

Abstract:The research on the perception and conservation of Chinese National Parks(also called Scenic and Historic Areas) as cultural landscapes are both requirements to solve the problems of Scenic and Historic Areas and meet the new demands from theinternational community, especially the World Heritage Cultural Landscape field. By rethinking the definition of cultural landscape from the narrow term to the extensive meaning, the paper aims to define the concept of Chinese national parks as cultural landscapes. From the view of how to conserve Chinese national park cultural landscapes better, the paper analyzes the existing problems due to the vagueness perception. The problems are: 1) lack of laws and regulations; 2)lack of focus on cultural landscape values in the general management plans; and 3) lack of research.
