Abstract:The layout forms of solid-web and lattice reinforcement are usually adopted in the reinforcement for the passive zone of foundation pit, while the feasibility of arch layout, a new type of reinforcement form, needs to be verified. We fist apply ANSYS software to conduct topology optimization to the reinforcement form, and the result shows that the arch reinforcement is the optimal form. Furthermore, 2D finite element simulation analysis shows that arch structure can save more materials than lattice form under the same pile deformation. Based on a practical case, the simulation and monitoring results confirmed that the multi-arch structure can significantly reduce the construction material for same pile deformation compared with traditional forms, which provides theoretical and practical guidance for arch reinforcement in passive zone of foundation pit.
Analysis on soil arching behind retaining wall

Abstract:Considering the effect of the angle of internal friction on the inclination of the sliding plane of soils behind retaining wall, the shape of the minor principal stress arch was theoretically analyzed. Average vertical earth pressures were computed according to the shape of the minor principal stress arch, and consequently the coefficient of earth pressures versus the angle of internal friction and the angle of wall friction was obtained. Using the coefficient in the method of horizontal differential element to compute active earth pressures on the retaining wall, the theoretical formulae of the unit earth pressures, the resultant earth pressures and the points of application of resultant earth pressures were obtained.The formula presented were compared with Coulomb's formula and some experimental observations.The results show that the unit earth pressures are non-linear and agree well with those of the experimental observations. The resultant earth pressures are equal to that determined by Coulomb's theory.

Abstract:Variation of seepage free surface with time is analyzed by finite element method that can perform the coupled analysis of soil mass deformation and pore water pressure dissipation,and the influence of variation of seepage free surface on excess pore water pressure,soil water potential and foundation pit deformations are also further investigated.It is indicated that excess pore water pressure and soil water potential will decrease when variation of seepage free surface outside the foundation pit is considered.Variation of seepage free surface causes the decrease of water pressure and the increase of effective stress outside the foundation pit,and also causes the decrease of the water head difference between the inside and outside of the foundation pit,and thus further results in the decrease of retaining structure horizontal displacement and pit base heave and the increase of ground surface settlement.

Abstract:Considering the influence of the bracing structure,the limit analysis FEM is employed to establish the linear equations using plastic flow constraints,velocity discontinuous constraints and velocity boundary conditions with nodes velocities,plastic strain rates and non-negative variables as the unknown qualities.Based on the theory of energy balance,the objective function is established and the linear program is used to solve the linear equation.The influence of the un-drained strength and the depth of the retaining wall on the stability coefficient are discussed.Numerical results indicate that the safety factor would be larger with the increaseing depth of the bracing structure.The comparison demonstrates the applicability of the proposed method.The model proposed in this paper provides an effective tool for the design of foundation pit in soft clay.

Abstract:Excavation braced by cantilever double-row piles is simulated by ABAQUS.Duncan-Chang constitutive model is used for the soil and the tangential module is settled to increase with the depth.Horizontal displacement of the pile and the earth pressure are studied.The influences of pile spacing,pile length,beam height,the reinforcement of the passive area and the soils between the piles on the piles behavior are analyzed.The results show that reinforcing the passive area has an obvious effect on decreasing displacement,while the pile length and beam height have little effect.Results are also compared when the piles are simulated by plane strain element and beam element in order to study the effect of the surface contact calculation.
Influence of improvement soil in foundation pits on ground settlement

Abstract:Cantilever retaining structure causes large ground settlement in soft soil regions.Improvement soil is an effective measure to decrease the ground settlement.Based on the elastic foundation beam theory,a finite element model of foundation pits was established.The effects of soil improvement on ground settlement of cantilev.er retaining structure were studied.The results show that the ground settlement decreases with the deceases of depth and degree of improvement soil.There are critical depth and degree in improvement soil.To save the engineering cost and guarantee the building safety,it is important to reasonably decide the depth and degree of improvement soil.

Abstract:It is imperative to evaluate factor of safety against basal heave failure in the design of braced deep excavation in soft clay. Based on previously published field monitoring data and finite element analyses of ground settlements of deep excavation in soft clay, an assumed plastic deformation mechanism proposed here gives upper bound solutions for base stability of braced deep excavations. The proposed kinematic mechanism is optimized by the mobile depth (profile wavelength). The method takes into account the influence of strength anisotropy under plane strain conditions, the embedment of the retaining wall, and the locations of the struts. The current method is validated by comparison with published numerical study of braced excavations in Boston blue clay and two other cases of excavation failure in Taipei. The results show that the upper bound solutions obtained from this presented method is more accurate as compared with the conventional methods for basal heave failure analyses.

Abstract:The prestressed concrete deck-tied arch bridge doesn't only have a long span, good appearance and economy, but also have the characteristics of low requirements to the foundation. It changes traditional tied arch bridge into deck-tied arch bridge, which looks like sunflower-shaped arch and prestressed steel strands are embedded in box girder on the top of the arch. Taking Yingbin Bridge as engineering background, the reasonable analysis model was established and behaviour of the bridge under design load was analyzed. The results shown that the design project is reasonable, prestressing force embedded in box girder can balance horizontal thrust in arch bridge effectively, improving the internal force of the main arch ring.

Abstract:PLAXIS is adopted to simulate the mechanical behavior and deformation of retaining structure for foundation pit in excavating process. In order to reveal the deformation and internal force of surporting structures, the different heaped loads are considered. The analytical results show that there are great differences between the mechanical behavior and deformation of surporting structures on both sides with the same design parameters. So it is necessary to calculate and analyse surporting structures two sides separately while designing the unbalanced foundation pit. Meanwhile, some conclusions are drawn on performance of supporting structures and deformation of foundation pits through the calculation and comparison.

Abstract:The deep-seated reinforced concrete slab, which is different from the traditional reinforced concrete slab for settlement control at bridge approach embankment, can avoid the complaints about the reinforced concrete slab cracking with the long-term impact action of vehicle. A simplified two-dimensional plane strain finite element model for bridge-approach, in which soil parameters are selected from the geological prospecting data, is proposed. The comparison between field experiment and theoretical results shows the characteristics of subsidence of bridge-approach overlaying the deep-seated concrete slab. Parametric analysis is also performed to investigate the influence factors of disposal effect of the deep-seated reinforced concrete slab. The results indicate that the deep-seated concrete slab has more advantages on the settlement control and alleviating vehicle bouncing at the bridge approach.
Analytical Method for the Deformation-Based Design of Retaining Walls in Asymmetric Excavation

Abstract:Conventional methods for designing retaining structures are not applicable to asymmetric excavation or deformation-based designs. This study proposes a quadruple-line displacement-dependent earth pressure coefficient model. Based on the proposed model, an analytical solution was developed to facilitate the deformation-based design of the asymmetric length of retaining walls propped at the crest. Furthermore, the effects of the soil internal friction angle, strut stiffness, excavation asymmetry level, and deformation control value on the embedment ratio (Re) of retaining walls were investigated. The results showed that Re determined by the classical equivalent-beam method is unsafe due to its basis on the ultimate-state earth pressure theory. The Re value of the shallower side exhibited greater sensitivity to asymmetric excavation than that of the deeper side. The retaining structure’s required Re decreased with an increase in the excavation asymmetry level. The required Re on either side of the retaining structure decreased as the deformation control values increased. The controlled deformation had a more obvious effect on the Re value of the retaining structure on the deeper side. The proposed method can be used for the deformation-based design of asymmetric wall lengths of retaining structures propped at the crest, considering the different excavation depths on both sides.

Abstract:The composite support form for shallow excavation of depth H=7 m has been suggested and widely used in recent years. Basing on the engineering practice, we adopt the elastoplastic model and use plane finite element method to analyze the effect of supporting parameters on the deformation behavior of excavation with composite supporting. The general principle of deformation behavior of different support methods is obtained. When the soil nails and piles are adopted simultaneous as composite support system, they will notably enhance the effect of the support; and the deformation behavior is different from that using soil nail merely, and the maximal displacement of the supporting system will move downwards closely to the bottom of foundation pit. And when the appropriate angle of the slop is used the composite support form will control the displacement of the side of foundation pit more effectively.

Abstract:The need to build embankments on soft clay deposits is widespread, including railway and expressway embankments. The difficulties in constructing embankments on these deposits are well known. The permeability of soft subgrade is usually low, so that construction is generally performed under undrained conditions, as a consequence of the low undrained shear strength of soft clay. The classical design of an embankment is often based on a limit equilibrium approach, in which the deformation factor can not be taken into account, so that the finite element method which can take deformation and stability into account becomes an effective method. Based on the in situ test data of Lianyungang railway embankment built on soft subgrade, the failure behavior and limit height of embankment are analyzed under the plane strain condition by using large deformation finite element method and Mohr-Coulomb model. And the numerical results analyzed by finite element method are compared carefully with the in situ test data. The results show that the limit height and failure behavior of embankment can be obtained by using the large deformation finite element method.

Abstract:In soft soil areas, equal-length piles are often adopted in the retaining system. A decrease in the bending moment value borne by the retaining structure along the pile depth (below the excavation bottom), leads to an inadequate use of the pile bending capacity near the pile bottom. This paper presents retaining systems with long and short pile combinations, in which the long piles ensure integral stability of the excavation while the short piles give full play to bearing the bending moment. For further analysis on pile and bottom heaves deformations and inner-force characteristics, three-dimensional models were built in order to simulate the stage construction of the excavation. The ratio between long and short pile numbers, and the effects on short pile length pile horizontal deformation, pile bending moment and bottom heave are investigated in detail. In the end, a feasible long-short pile combination is established. Obtained results from the simulation data and the field data prove that the long-short pile retaining system is feasible.

Abstract:To solve the problem that a semi-ellipsoidal shaped surface subsidence appeared locally in a raw material yard in a steel plant,the comparative calculation of the bearing capacity of the original composite foundation was proceeded based on a rigid foundation and flexible foundation respectively.According to the load transfer law,the causes of the accident were analyzed.Accordingly,three comprehensive measures,i.e.,the semi-rigid cushion,long-short-pile composite ground and compound retaining wall,were adopted in the retreatment design.The whole process of monitoring verifies that the measures work soundly,for the yard reaches its scheduled height smoothly.It can provide a useful reference for the research,design,accident retreatment of the composite ground on flexible foundation,such as high embankment of highway or railway,earth-rock dam,raw material yard and oil tank etc on thick soft clay.

Abstract:The interaction between retaining structure and soil in arc-shaped excavation has obvious spatial effect: the arch effect can reduce influence on surrounding environment.The article introduces design of the arc-shaped excavation in integrated services building in Zhengzhou and the reinforcement technology for deformation control.The excavation is simulated by the software FLAC3D,the spatial deformation of the retaining structure and influence on surrounding environment are analyzed.The key technologies for the design of arc pit and deformation control are summarized,which can be for reference in designing and constructing in similar projections.

Abstract:Therer is no unified computing model for the stability analysis of combined support by anchor rod retaining wall.In this paper the author analyses the stability of combined support by anchor rod retaining wall by the application of the finite element software about Plaxis.In this paper,the selection of constitutive model of soil supporting structure,the selection of material models,parameters,calculation methods are discussed,and a specific project examples are numerically simulated.It provides a basis for the design of retaining structure.

Abstract:Pile-supported embankments are widely used in foundation treatments, owing to their safety, efficient construction, and economy. The soil-arching effect is a key load-transferring mechanism in a pile-supported embankment, and it reduces the even settlement on the embankment surface. In recent years, researchers and engineers have conducted extensive research on the soil-arching phenomenon in pile-supported embankments. This paper reviews relevant studies on the effect of soil arching in pile-supported embankments in order to better understand the mechanism and influencing factors of the distribution of the arching effect. First, the development history of the practice and theory related to pile-supported embankments is discussed. This is followed by a review of theoretical studies on the soil-arching effect, load distribution and soil deformation on pile-supported embankments (with and without geogrid reinforcement), and structures and factors influencing soil arching. The results of these studies are summarized, and finally, topics for future research are suggested, providing references for the design and maintenance of civil infrastructure.

Abstract:The analysis of soil arching is the first important issue for the design of piled embankments. An analytical model for soil arching within piled embankments is developed,which can consider the coupled effect of the embankment filling and soil consolidation. The calculated values of the stress concentration ratio using the proposed model herein are in good agreement with the field measurements. This demonstrates that the model can reflect the variation characteristics of soil arching with time. A further study of characteristics of soil arching and the neutral point of pile shaft during the embankment filling and the soil consolidation was also conducted. The results show that:(1) With the embankment filling,the stress concentration ratio increases and reaches a maximum value at the end of filling,then decreases about 15 percent of the maximum value and maintains nearly a constant value. (2) During the embankment filling and soil consolidating,the location of the neutral point of pile shaft descends firstly,then ascends till the end of embankment filling. With the continuous consolidating of soil,the depth of the neutral point becomes deeper,and at the end of soil consolidating,the location of the neutral point is unaltered. The obtained conclusions can provide valuable references to engineering design.

Abstract:Based on the complexity of working properties on pile-supported embankment,and unclearness of common working mechanism among embankment,pile and soil,authors establish the balance equation considering stress-deformation coordination of soil-pile-embankment,analyze the load transfer property of them and get the results of soil arching,loading sharing of soil and pile,the settlement of pile and soil.Contrasted with elastic-plastic finite element,the method is verificated reasonable.Using this method,authors analyze the widen engineering of Hangyong freeway.
