The demand and gender difference on reproductive health knowledge among college students in Beijing

Abstract:Objective To understand the demand and gender difference on reproductive health knowledge among college students in Beijing and provide basis for reproductive health education in colleges and universities.Methods An anonymous questionnaire was used among students,who were selected by random cluster sampling,from 6 universities in Beijing.Results Among 1041 students 497 were male and 544 were female.89.05%(911/1023)students indicated that it is necessary for colleges to carry out reproductive health education.Currently,the main knowledge channels are " The Internet(55.74%)","Classmates or Friends"(54.97%) and "TV or Magazines"(53.52%);The ideal and expected channels(in order) are "Lectures"(44.90%),"The Internet"(43.24%) and "Health Educators"(40.98%);the most interested topics are "Sexual Psychology"(64.54%),"Couple Relationship"(57.76%) and "Contraception"(55.91%);there are different perception on the current,expected channel and interested topics between different genders(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Male students are more tolerant to premarital sex and pregnant,and have a higher proportion than female students on sex(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Conclusion There is demand on reproductive health education among college students,but varying between different genders.The colleges and universities need to consider both the demand and gender difference when planning on reproductive health education.
