Abstract:This paper adopted two stone chip powders(grinding respectively for 40 min and 60 min),commercial limestone powder and machinemade sand powder as the research object to focus on the study of the mechanical property of cement-based mortars when different kinds of limestone powders mixed single or together with other mineral admixtures such as fly ash and slag powder.Experimental results showed mortars had the best mechanical property when the three mixed together.The activation effect between limestone powder and the mineral admixtures powder was mutual.

Abstract:The increasing scarcity of natural sands has led to a growing preference for manufactured sand in the production of construction materials in response to sustainable development. However, existing research typically applies it to ordinary concrete, its application in advanced concrete still remains relatively limited to date. In this study, manufactured sand was used as aggregate to prepare the eco-friendly ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). To further improve the effectiveness of solid waste management and alleviate its impact on the environment, the feasibility of ecological utilization of recycling stone powder (SP), a by-product from manufactured sand industry, as partial substitutes for cementitious materials was explored. The fresh and hardened properties, microstructural characteristics, environmental and economic implications were evaluated. Results indicated that the introduction of SP considerably enhanced the rheological properties and reduced the exothermic peak temperature of UHPC paste. With the increase of SP, a first increasing and then decreasing trend was seen in flowability. An equivalent or slightly improved level of mechanical strength was revealed at low SP content (i.e., 10%). Different lithological SP was found to enhance the toughness and suppress the early shrinkage of UHPC. Incorporating SP increased the total pore volume and refined the distribution of pore sizes, and could also change the morphology of hydration products and Si/Ca ratio of interfacial transition zone. Additionally, the lowest unit compressive strength costs were achieved at the substitution of 20%, 10% and 20% for granite, tuff and limestone mixtures, and the carbon emissions could be lowered by 26.9% compared with traditional UHPC when 30% of SP was involved, showing excellent economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:With the depletion of river sand and the rising price of quartz sand, more and more researchers are trying to use manufactured sand to prepare ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). However, due to the large amount of fine particles and high water demand, few studies are available to directly use the manufactured sand in its original state to prepare UHPC. To overcome the above problems, in this study, two locally available recycled manufactured sands are used as aggregates, and an attempt is made to maximize the use of their original gradation to prepare a cleaner construction production integrating high flowability, excellent mechanical per-formance, high cost-effective and environmentally-friendly property that meets the engineering requirements. The properties of workability, mechanical strengths, volume stability, hydration degree, pore structures, morphology of interfacial transition zone (ITZ), carbon emission and production cost are evaluated and dis-cussed. Results indicate that all the mixtures prepared in this study can be considered to have high flowability except when granite sand is completely used. The mixture containing 75% tuff sand can even reach a compressive strength of 166.2 MPa, which is 10.5% higher than the reference one. A reduction of 28.9% can be observed in the early-age autogenous shrinkage of tuff sand UHPC as compared to the reference specimen. The mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and X-ray computed tomography (X-CT) results demonstrate that the micropore volume, porosity and number of mesopores of UHPC increase to a certain extent when manufactured sand is utilized. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation reveals the most compact ITZ between cement paste and waste tuff sand. Additionally, the recycled manufactured sand UHPC can diminish the carbon emission of 19 kg and the cost of 27.4% (granite sand) and 25.5% (tuff sand) per cubic meter, showing excellent environmental and economical benefits.
Effects on the Concrete Properties of That, the Natural Sand in Concrete is Replaced by the Blast Furnace Slag

Abstract:Effects of that, the natural sand of concrete is replaced by the blast furnace slag, on properties of fresh and hardened concrete were investigated by testing. The results indicate that, after the slag replace the natural sand, the workability of concrete becomes lower, while the bleeding of the concrete will be higher, and the loss of slump of the concrete will be faster, at the similar slump. For the same w/c, the compressive strength, the flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity of concrete are enhanced with the increase of slag replacement rate, and the enhanced rate becomes larger with the increase of curing age. And the sulfate attack resistance of slag replaced concrete is similar to ordinary concrete.

Abstract:Cement concrete has an increasing utilization in highway construction. However, the lower flexural tensile strength and abrasion-resistance restricted the development of concrete pavement with heavy traffic. Hence, It has highlighted the need for research on high performance concrete (HPC). The design of specific concrete normally depends on the mixing of mineral admixtures in concrete mixture. This paper presents the first experimental study on strength and abrasion-resistance enhancement admixture (SAEA) mixed with slag powder, steel slag powder and silica fume. The optimal proportion of three mineral admixture and reasonable mixed amount of SAEA were then given, and the mechanism of SAEA reacted in concrete was analyzed based on sol-gel theory. Lastly, the effect of concrete mixed with SAEA was validated and the micro-structure transformation of specimens was given by SEM.

Abstract:Incorporating steel slag (SS) and stone powder (SP) as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in cement and concrete products is an effective approach to promoting environmental protection. Recently, the effect of using steel slag alone is not satisfactory and the performance of blended cementitious materials is expected to improve after compounding with other admixtures. In this study, steel slag powder (SSP) and SP by-products from manufactured sand were employed with a total dose of less than 30% as a replacement for cement. The results revealed that the blended cementitious materials exhibited excellent mechanical strength and pore structure with the synergistic effect of SSP and SP. Compared to SSP or SP doping alone, the activity index of the composite 25% SSP and 5% SP was higher. SSP offers a considerable retardation effect on cement, while SP has little effect. Conversely, the effect of steel slag on mortar fluidity is neglected and SP decreases the fluidity. When 5% SSP is combined with 5% SP, the initial and final setting times of cement are increased by 39% and 25%, respectively. The reduction in mortar fluidity amounted to an insignificant reduction of only 0.7%, and the strength of the mortar at 28 d and 180 d was only lost by 7% and 5%, respectively. The coaction of 15% SSP and 15% SP was observed to promote the wollastonite generation, enhance the crystallization degree of xonotlite phases, decrease the microcrack widths, and optimize the pore structure of the blended cementitious materials.

Abstract:Fly ash, lithium slag and steel slag as industrial waste, replace quality cement to prepare cement mortar and concrete, but its utilization is often low, so using these industrial waste in large quantities by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analyzer, Fourier infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope analysis method, we studied the hydration products, spectral performance and microstructure of mortar after mineral admixtures as fine aggregate, and the change laws of mortar strength with the replacement rate (0%, 30%, 50%, 70% and 100%) were analyzed. Test results showed that the hydration products were CSH gel, Ca(OH)(2), a small amount of AFt and Four kinds of slurry hydration products mainly for CSH gel, Ca(OH)(2), a small amount of AFt and unhydrated particles (Al2O3 and SiO2) for cement paste, cement-lithium slag paste, cement-fly ash paste, cement-steel slag paste, which contain a certain Li2O center dot Al2O3 center dot SiO2, Ca1.56SiO3.5 center dot xH(2)O, and RO phase, respectively. Characteristic peak was 3 467, 3 438, 2 923, 2 348, 1 638, 1 429, 1 111, 1 000, 768, 696 and 462 cm(-1) for four paste, but its strong peak was different and activity was also different, which was involved in the level of secondary hydration reaction is also different, so the content of Ca(OH)(2) in cement-steel slag paste was significantly higher than cement-lithium slag paste and cement-fly ash paste. It played volcanic activity and filling effect when mineral admixtures replaced cement or fine aggregate. The flexural strength and compressive strength of mortar with 100% mineral admixture (lithium slag, fly ash and steel slag) were higher than pure cement mortar, it was about 37. 77%/51. 88%, 14. 71%/11. 70%, 14. 71%/34. 88%, respectively, But the flexural strength and compressive strength reached the maximum when the dosage of mineral admixtures was different. Therefore, mineral admixtures as fine aggregate of mortar were feasible, which can greatly improve the use of industrial waste in the concrete industry, and can achieve the result of energy conservation and emissions reduction.

Abstract:The reuse of waste materials, particularly granite and undercooked or overcooked clinker, in sand concrete formulation is the focus of this study aimed at conserving natural resources and protecting the environment within the framework of sustainable development. To achieve this objective, we replaced ordinary sand with recycled sands in the sand concrete volume. Specifically, we incorporated granite waste (GS) and recycled clinker (CS) at rates of 20 and 40%. Subsequently, we conducted a series of evaluations on the different formulations. These evaluations included fresh state properties such as density, workability, and air content, as well as mechanical properties like compressive strength, flexural strength, rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity, modulus of elasticity, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Additionally, we analyzed durability parameters such as water absorption, dimensional variation, freeze-thaw resistance, acid attacks, and chloride penetration on hardened concrete. We compared these results with reference samples and considered potential correlations among the different parameters. The results obtained showed improvements in workability, hardness, and homogeneity with enhancements in microstructure, with the best results obtained from SCC compared to the control concrete and SCG. The results of mechanical properties demonstrated that concretes containing recycled clinker sand are more resistant in compression and flexural strength compared to SC0 and SCG, with maximum strengths observed in concrete containing 40% recycled clinker at ages 7, 28, and 90 days. Durability parameters were acceptable with slight reductions in ultrasonic pulse velocity and modulus of elasticity after freeze-thaw cycles. A good correlation was observed among the various parameters.

Abstract:Ordinary cement is not environmentally friendly, has high cost and lacks superior performance. Many scholars use various admixtures to adjust the properties of cement slurry, but admixtures are usually not environmentally friendly, and it is difficult to ensure that the properties after deployment meet engineering requirements. In this study, a variety of admixtures were obtained using the environmental protection method, and the optimal mixing ratio was analyzed by combining the entropy weight method and the Taguchi grey relational analysis method. The developed cement slurry was compared with conventional slurry from both macroscopic and microscopic aspects. Aiming at the problem that previous scholars lacked the engineering feasibility verification of the developed slurry, this study combined the constitutive equation regression analysis method, discrete element numerical simulation and other methods to study various actual engineering conditions. The results show that the optimal mix ratio of silica fume cement slurry has good permeability characteristics under the conditions of different roughness, grouting pressure and confining pressure. At the same time, under different geological temperatures and different erosive liquid states, the cement slurry stone body shows good properties of reinforcement materials.

Mechanical properties and durability of concrete modified with steel slag and silica fume

Abstract:Experimental study was carried out to investigate the physical and mechanical properties ,the durability,and the microstruc-tures of concrete mixed with different percentages of steel slag.At the same time,silica fume was used to improve the performance and the microscopic properties of steel slag concrete.The test results indicate that the steel slag can be used in concrete as cementing material with lower activity than the cement.Steel slag substituting 10%cement by mass improves the mechanical properties and the durability of con-crete.Even up to 20%,the steel slag could be advantageously blended with cement without adversely affecting the performance of concrete. When the mixture uses equal weight portion of steel slag and silica fume ,the strength and the durability of concrete are improved dramati-cally.Steel slag powder has two favorable effects on the concrete performance.Firstly ,steel slag can act as an active cementitious material to improve the hydration reaction in concrete,but its activity is lower than that of cement. Second,Steel slag powder can act as micro-ag-gregate,which disperses the cement particles,fills the pores,and improves the compactness of concrete.

Abstract:This study is aimed at exploring the effect of steel slag powder (SSP), fly ash (FA), and silica fume (SF) on the mechanical properties and durability of cement mortar. SSP, SF, and FA were used as partial replacement of the Ordinary Portland cement (OPC). It was showed that the compressive and bending strength of steel slag powder were slightly lower than that of OPC. An increase in the SSP content caused a decrease in strength. However, the growth rate of compressive strength of SSP2 (20% replacement by the weight of OPC) at the curing ages of 90 days was about 8% higher than that of OPC, and the durability of SSP2 was better than that of OPC. The combination of mineral admixtures improved the later strength, water impermeability, and sulfate resistance compared with OPC and SSP2. The compressive strength of SSPFA (SSP and SF) at 90 days reached 70.3 MPa. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy indicated that SSP played a synergistic role with FA or SF to improve the performance of cement mortar.

Abstract:With orthogonal experiment method,a new type of cementing material was developed,its mechanical properties meeting the 32.5 composite cement standard.The influence of water cement ratio and curing conditions as well as the durability and heat of hydration were also studied.The results show that the new cementing material has good performance in resistance against water erosion,sulfate attack and dry wet circulation.The hydration heat of the new cementing materials is also better than that of the 32.5 the composite cement and that of the 42.5ordinary portland cement.

Abstract:Nowadays, all the world face to the global warming problems due to the emission of . From the previous studies, recycled aggregates were used as an alkali activator in blast furnace slag to achieve zero-cement concrete, and favorable results of obtaining strength were achieved. In this study, gypsum and incineration waste ash were used as the additional alkali activation and effects of the gypsum and incineration waste ash to enhance the performance of the mortar were tested. Results showed that although the replacement ratio of 0.5% of incineration waste ash and 20% of anhydrous gypsum resulted in the low of mortar at the early age, while it improved the later strength and achieved the similar strength to that of conventional mortar (at 91 days).

Abstract:With the gradual decrease in natural sand resources and rising prices, the transportation of building materials in mountainous areas is difficult. Hence, studying the mechanics and the impermeability of manufactured sand to address infrastructure construction and to protect the ecological environment due to the lack of natural sand resources is important. In this study, the effect of the stone powder content of manufactured sand on the mechanical properties of concrete and the permeability resistance of the chloride ion is evaluated. The stone powder contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, are evaluated and a comparative test is completed for natural river sand with a strength grade C40. The results show that the stone powder in concrete has a certain effect on the mechanical properties of manufactured sand concrete. An appropriate amount of stone powder improves the durability of manufactured sand concrete. When the stone powder content is 10% or more, the chloride diffusion coefficient of manufactured sand concrete is lower than that of natural sand, and its permeability is better than that of natural sand. In a certain range, the slump and diffusion coefficient of concrete show the same trend with the increase of compressive strength.

Abstract:Facing the lack of limestone materials in some highway construction areas, the reasonable utilization of local raw materials become more and more concerned. To verify the feasibility of replacing limestone aggregate with sandstone in macadam, comparative analysis of appearance and composition between sandstone and limestone is conducted first. Then the mechanical properties, water stability and micro morphology of sandstone concrete are conducted via the compressive strength test, splitting strength test, water stability test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test. The results showed that irregular polygonal grains and loose structure were in both limestone and sandstone, but limestone has large particles in local pores. All the mechanical properties of sandstone concrete could meet the specification requirements which provided support for alternative some limestone in cement stabilized macadam base. The strength growth rate with less than 4.0% cement content was not obvious. With curing age increasing, the splitting tensile strength of sandstone concrete with different cement content gradually increased, but the strength growth trend slowed down after 28 days. The porosity and water absorption of sandstone were larger than that of limestone, which affected the mechanical properties of sandstone. In addition, the application of sandstone replacing limestone project was evaluated, and the pavement test results verified the feasibility of sandstone concrete in expressway.
Experimental Study on the Concrete with Compound Admixture of Iron Tailings and Slag Powder under Low Cement Clinker System

Abstract:In order to study the performance of concrete with compound admixture of iron tailings and slag powder under low cement clinker system, the mixture ratio of different iron tailings powder and slag powder was designed to prepare C30 and C50 concrete. The workability, strength, carbonation depth, chloride diffusion coefficient, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) of concrete were measured, respectively. The test results show that iron tailings powder is beneficial to improve the workability, and the strength of concrete decreases with the increase of iron tailings powder content, while the carbonation depth and chloride diffusion coefficient increase with the increase of iron tailings powder content. Under low cement clinker system, the iron tailings powder should not be used alone (below 70% of mineral admixture). When the ratio of iron tailings to slag powder is 1 : 1, the strength, carbonation depth, chloride ion permeation coefficient, and the microstructure of concrete are roughly the same to that of concrete with single slag powder. So, the iron tailings powder can replace S95 grade slag powder in the same quantity. Iron tailings powder does not take part in hydration reaction, but it can improve particle gradation, reach close accumulation, and increase the quantity of central grains.

Abstract:Abstract The purpose of this study is to figure out the effects of the active mineral admixture on the mechanical properties and the durability of the concrete. In this paper, the orthogonal test was adopted to study the effects of the metakaolin, the ultra-fine fly ash, and the silica fume on the compressive strength and the splitting tensile strength of the concrete at various curing ages, and to further determine the optimal mix ratio. After that, the ordinary concrete was taken as the control group, the Na 2 SO 4 solution and the MgSO 4 + NaCl solution were used as the corrosive medium, and the dry-wet alternation method was adopted to make comparison and micro-analysis on the durability degradation processes of both the admixture concrete with optimal mix ratio and the ordinary concrete in the two solutions as mentioned above. The results show that: as for the concrete mechanical properties, the metakaolin shows the most significant and positive effects on the concrete cured for 7d-14d, while the silica fume affects the concrete with 28 d curing age most. The mechanical properties of the concretes at various curing ages reach their optimal levels when it is added with 10% metakaolin, 15% ultra-fine fly ash, and 3% silica fume. For the concrete durability, the application of mineral admixture could greatly improve the concrete capability in resisting the SO 4 2− corrosion. However the complex ions have destructive effects on the mineral admixture concrete. Compared with the ordinary concrete, it shows the most significant growth of corrosion product M–S–H, faster reduction of mechanical properties, and loose and porous micro-structure.

Abstract:As governments are increasingly attaching more importance to environmental protection, many policies and regulations are being promulgated to restrict or prohibit river sand extraction. Thus, there is a growing tendency for concrete production to use desert sand-doped artificial sand as the fine aggregate. This paper investigated the microstructure, mechanical properties, durability, and volume stability of concrete with desert sand and artificial sand. In the study, the strength grades of concrete ranged from C30 to C100, while the substitution ratios of the desert sand for the artificial sand ranged from 0 % to 100 %. The results showed that a high substitution ratio of desert sand increased the concrete porosity and extended the interface zone width. The concrete strength generally decreased as the desert sand substitution ratio increased, however, for the C50 and C60 strength grades, concrete with 20 % desert sand had minor positive effects. Basically, as the desert sand substitution ratio increased, the Cl- penetration resistance and frost resistance tended to be weaker, although there were a few exceptions. High substitution ratios of desert sand were also not good for the sulfate attack resistance of concrete. In most cases, concrete with 20 % desert sand shrank more slowly than concrete without desert sand. These conclusions provide the experimental support for the promotion of desert sand applications in the concrete industry.
Influence of Dolomite Rock Powder and Iron Tailings Powder on the Electrical Resistivity, Strength and Microstructure of Cement Pastes and Concrete

Abstract:Dolomite rock powder (the waste stone residue in the production of machine-made sand and stone processing) and iron tailings powder formed by mineral processing industry are solid wastes, which occupy land resources, pollute the environment and release toxic substances without reasonable processing. The dolomite rock powder and iron tailings powder composing a large number of active substances could be advantageous to the cement-based materials. In this study, the electrical resistivity of cement paste and concrete was measured. Meanwhile, the influence of dolomite rock powder and iron tailings powder on the compressive strength of concrete was investigated. The electric flux of concrete was determined to estimate the chloride ion permeability. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction were obtained to investigate the hydration of cement paste. Results showed the electrical resistivity of all specimens presented in this order: specimens with iron tailings < specimens with dolomite rock powder < blank specimens < specimens with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) < specimens with fly ash. The correlation between electrical resistivity and curing age of cement paste or concrete has been deduced as a quadratic function. The addition of GGBS could improve the compressive strength of concrete. Meanwhile, when the other three types of mineral admixtures were added, 5% by mass ratio of the total binder materials was the optimum for the compressive strength. The curing ages, the fly ash, the GGBS and 5% dolomite rock powder or 5% iron tailings powder demonstrated a positive effect on the chloride ion impermeability. However, when higher dosages of dolomite rock powder or iron tailings powder were added, the effect was the opposite. Finally, the compactness of the microstructure and the Ca(OH)2 of cement paste could be improved by a small dosage of dolomites or iron tailings (less than 5%).

Abstract:Influence of three different mineral admixtures i.e.limestone,blast furnace slag and fly ash on workability and mechanical properties of dry-mixed mortar is studied respectively.The relationship between macroscopy mechanical properties and micro pore structure of dry-mixed mortar adding admixtures is discussed.The results show that the flowability of mortar can be increased when fly ash content is less than 30%,but it is reduced when the fly ash content keeps on increasing;adding ground blast furnace slag can slightly increase the flowability of mortar;ground limestone reduces the flowability of mortar to a certain extent meanwhile it can increase the water retention rate of fresh-mixed mortars;ground blast furnace slag and fly ash lower the water retention rate.With increase of limestone,ground blast furnace slag and fly ash the strength of mortar at 28 days is reduced to different extent,the influencing sequence is as follows: limestone fly ash blast furnace slag.Compared with blank sample,when the content of ground limestone and blast furnace slag is 50% of the cement,the total porosity of hardened mortar at 28 days increases 10.2% and 7.7% respectively,when the content of fly ash is 50% of the cement,the total porosity basically remains the same.Substitution of limestone for 50% cement,deleterious pores d100nm in hardened mortar increase 24.0% at 28 days,while using fly ash as substitute for 50% cement,deleterious pores in mortar basically keeps the same.When same amount of blast furnace slag is used in stead of cement,deleterious pores d100nm in hardened mortar reduce 6.5%.
