Progress in chemistry

Abstract:Fullerene oxides play an important role in studying functionalization of carbon clusters, which stimulated the interest of scientists. The progress in study of the structures, electronic spectra, IR spectra and NMR spectra for the fullerene oxides C-60, O-n, C70On, C76On, C78On and C80On is reviewed comprehensively. Relevant works worldwide hitherto are introduced. The regularity of structural characteristics and spectroscopy for fullerene oxides is further explored according to author's own theoretical research in this field. Based on the agreement between calculating and experimental results on oxides of C-60 and C-70, the structures and spectra of oxides for higher fullerenes are predicted.

Abstract:A good hydrogen storage material should adsorb hydrogen in high concentrations and with optimal binding energies. Numerous mixed carbon boron fullerenes which are decorated with metal atoms were previously constructed by hand and proposed as a promising material in this context. We present a fully ab-initio, unbiased structure search in the configurational space of decorated C48B12 and find that most of the hitherto postulated ground state structures are not ground states. We determine the energetically lowest configurations for Be, Ca, Li and Sc decorated C48B12 clusters.

Abstract:Potential energy differences alone cannot always explain why particular fullerene isomers Cn are observed. It has been demonstrated on various higher IPR isomers that entropy effects are to be included in order to get a realistic stability picture at high temperatures. Our computations along this line extend to n=96. However, the principle works for smaller fullerenes, too, as it is demonstrated on the case study of C-36.

Abstract:The complete set of 271 classical fullerene isomers of C50 has been studied by full geometry optimizations at the SAM1, PM3, AM1, and MNDO quantum-chemical levels, and their lower energy structures have also been partially computed at the ab initio levels of theory. A D(5h) species, with the least number of pentagon adjacency, is predicted by all semiempirical methods and the HF/4-31G calculations as the lowest energy structure, but the B3LYP/6-31G* geometry optimizations favor a D3 structure (with the largest HOMO-LUMO gap and the second least number of adjacent pentagons) energetically lower (-2 kcal/mol) than the D(5h) isomer. To clarify the relative stabilities at elevated temperatures, the entropy contributions are taken into account on the basis of the Gibbs energy at the HF/4-31G level for the first time. The computed relative-stability interchanges show that the D3 isomer behaves more thermodynamically stable than the D(5h) species within a wide temperature interval related to fullerene formation. According to a newly reported experimental observation, the structural/energetic properties and relative stabilities of both critical isomers (D(5h) and D3) are analyzed along with the experimentally identified decachlorofullerene C50Cl10 of D(5h) symmetry. Some features of higher symmetry C50 nanotube-type isomers are also discussed.

Abstract:The elucidation of geometries is the fundamental to further investigate and develop fullerene chemistry, an epoch-making discipline since 1985. Although the geometries of fullerenes, including their deriva-tives, could be characterized by various experimental methods, single-crystal X-ray diffraction is the only precise one. Notably, the electronic structures and reaction mechanisms cannot be clearly studied in experiment. Theoretical study is a valid and credible choice with foresight.In this account, we highlight the advanced theoretical contributions to the structures, reaction mech-anisms, and formation mechanisms of fullerenes, including endohedral fullerenes (EFs). Several rules pre-viously proposed were highlighted to screen the stabilities of (endohedral) fullerenes. In addition, the semi-empirical molecular orbital methods (SEMOMs), molecular dynamics, and Hartree-Fock (HF) method are also performed to characterize the relative stability of EFs. Subsequently, with the develop-ments of theoretical level and computational efficiency, density functional theory (DFT) computation combined with statistic thermodynamically analysis (STA) is successful for predicting the stable isomers of EFs, on which the first non-IPR EF, Ce@C70, was revealed. In addition, the results of the single-crystal X-ray diffraction results confirm many of theoretical predictions. The long-range corrections in DFT play a key role in the study of Sc2C2n system. Additionally, the electronic structures of EFs have also been stud-ied in theory, and there is no choice but to the theoretical study on reaction mechanism of EFs. The exper-imental method is languorous on the fullerene-formation mechanism, including endohedral fullerenes, which is still ambiguous up to now, due to the ultra-formation conditions. There is much theoretical evi-dence for the fullerene-formation process based on top-down and bottom-up models. Abstract:Combining the extended cluster expansion method and the first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the structural stabilities of nitrogen doped C60 fullerene. With the structural recognition, we have calculated all possible isomers of C60-nNn (n = 1–4) to obtain their ground state structures using the first-principles method. For C60-nNn (n = 5–9) heterofullerenes, we have estimated the energy by the extended cluster expansion method to screen the candidates efficiently, followed by first-principles confirmation for the low-lying structures. For C60-nNn with more than 9 nitrogen atoms, we developed a classification method to select the candidates and successfully obtained the low-lying isomers. The most stable structures for C60-nNn (n = 3–11) we obtained have lower energies compared to the structures in previous studies. Notably, we have found 26 low-lying structures of C48N12 azafullerenes, from their 11.6 billion isomers.

Abstract:The authors find even-odd variations as functions of r (<or=7) for multiple ionization of van der Waals dimers in slow Xe(30+)+[C60]2([C60C70])-->...+[C60]2(r+)([C60C70](r+)) electron-transfer collisions. This even-odd behavior is in sharp contrast to the smooth one for fullerene monomers and may be related to even-odd effects in dimer ionization energies in agreement with results from an electrostatic model. The kinetic energy releases for dimer dissociations [predominantly yielding intact fullerenes [C60]2(r+)-->C60(r1+)+C60(r2+) in the same (r1=r2) or nearby (r1=r2+/-1) charge states] are found to be low in comparison with the corresponding model results indicating that internal excitations of the separating (intact) fullerenes are important. Experimental appearance sizes for the heavier clusters of fullerenes [C60]n(r+) (n>3 and r=2-5) compare well with predictions from a new nearest-neighbor model assuming that r unit charges in [C60]n(r+) are localized to r C60 molecules such that the Coulomb energy of the system is minimized. The system is then taken to be stable if (i) two (singly) charged C60 are not nearest neighbors and (ii) the r C60(+) molecules have binding energies to their neutral nearest neighbors which are larger than the repulsive energies for the (r-1) C60(+)-C60(+) pairs. Essential ingredients in the nearest-neighbor model are cluster geometries and the present results on dimer stabilities.
Remarkable Stabilities Of Trimetallic Nitride Clusterfullerenes Msc2n@C-70 (M = Sc, Y, Dy) With Three Pentagon Adjacencies: A Theoretical Survey

Abstract:A MSc2N@C-70 (M = Sc, Y, Dy) family has been systematically investigated by density functional calculations in conjunction with statistical thermodynamic analyses for the first time. The results revealed that C-2 nu(7854)-C-70 is the most predominant carbon cage when encapsulating DySc2N, YSc2N, and Sc3N clusters. In addition, endohedral structures based on C-1(7852)-C-70 and C-1(7851)-C-70 are also stable with large concentrations in the temperature region of fullerene formation. All these three isomers are non-IPR structures with three pentagon adjacencies (PA) and related by Stole-Wales transformation. The interaction energies (INT) of MSc2N@C-2 nu(7854)-C-70, MSc2N@C-1 (7852)-C-70, and MSc2N@C-1(7851)-C-70 are much more negative than those of the IPR structures MSc2N@D-sh(8149)-C-70, revealing a stabilizing effect of the MSc2N (M = Sc, Y, Dy) clusters toward the PAs. On the basis of the ionic model of (MSc2N)(6+)@C-70(6-), which is confirmed by the frontier orbital analyses, the electron back-donation from C-70(6-) to (MSc2N)(6+) increases in the order of Sc3N@C-70 < YSc2N@C-70 < DySc2N@C-70. Therefore, the INT value increases in the order of Sc3N@C-70 < YSc2N@C-70 < DySc2N@C-70, suggesting that the stabilizing effect of the endohedral cluster is weakened by Y and Dy. Moreover, the UV-vis-NIR spectra of MSc2N@C-2 (7854)-C-70 (M = Sc, Y, Dy) coincide with the experimental characterizations well, and simulations for other isomers will be helpful for further identification of those metal nitride clusterfullerenes.

Abstract:The family of soluble fullerene derivatives comprises a widely studied group of electron transporting molecules for use in organic electronic and optoelectronic devices. For electronic applications, electron transporting (n-channel) materials are required for implementation into organic complementary logic circuit architectures. To date, few soluble candidate materials have been studied that fulfill the stringent requirements of high carrier mobility and air stability. Here we present a study of three soluble fullerenes with varying electron affinity to assess the impact of electronic structure on device performance and air stability. Through theoretical and experimental analysis of the electronic structure, characterization of thin-film structure, and characterization of transistor device properties we find that the air stability of the present series of fullerenes not only depends on the absolute electron affinity of the semiconductor but also on the disorder within the thin-film. Theoretical Studies on the Structures and Stability of C-40 Isomers

Abstract:The Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr(B3LYP) method and 6-31G basis set was employed to study the equilibrium geometries and electronic structures of six kinds of C-40 fullerene isomers, i. e. , the isomers with D-5d, T-d, D-2h, C-3v, D-2( I ) and D-2( I ) symmetries. Due to the Jahn-Teller distortion we calculated the D-2d(T-d) structure in stead of T-d strucure of C-40. Mealwhile, the stability order of the six kinds of C-40 isomers was judged from the total energies of them. According to our calculations, the stability order is D-2( I )>D-5d>D-2d(T-d)>C-3v>D-2h>D-2( I ), which is in good agreement with Salcedo et al.'s computational result of D-5d>D-2d>D-2h at the HF/3-21G level, and is consistent with Zhang et al.'s proposal that the D-2( I ) structure of C-40 isomers is the most stable one. In addition, our calculated results also confirmed that the HOMo-LUMO gap is not reliable to predict the stability of fullerenes.
Computing Isomeric Higher and Smaller Fullerenes: Materials Controlled by A Profound Enthalpy/Entropy Interplay

Abstract:Early results from the eighties for small carbon clusters like C(4) or C(6) have suggested that the combined quantum-chemical and statistical-mechanical computations could show some interesting temperature effects also for isomeric fullerenes. This feature was first demonstrated on some C(50) isomers. The fullerene research has indeed supplied several sets of isomeric higher fullerenes. At present over twenty stable fullerenes Cl have been identified with n varying from 60 to 96. Several such mixtures of fullerene isomers have been computed (C(76) till C(94)) and an agreement with observations found. Hence, the computations have demonstrated that the presumption of partial, inter-isomeric thermodynamic equilibrium is actually well working. One of the biggest systems computed within the partial thermodynamic-equilibrium treatment so far is C(92) with 86 IPR isomers. The reported computations are based on semiempirical (SAM1), ab initio SCF (HF/4-31G), and DFT (B3LYP/6-31G*) approaches and RRHO partition functions. The entropy considerations also indicate an interesting way for non-IPR structures stabilization. illustrated on the C(72) system. The approach is also applied to smaller fullerenes like C(36). As fullerenes are formed at high temperatures, entropy effects should be important owing to the temperature enhancement. It turns out for C(36) that in the most sophisticated computational approximation used, B3LYP/6-31G*, just two structures are controlling the region of higher temperatures: the conventional fullerenes D(6h) and D(2d). Although the D(2d) ground state has to prevail at low temperatures, the stability order is reversed by entropy effects already at a temperature of 1500 K. The case of non-isomeric species is also discussed. Fullerenes and nanotubes have been considered as new agents and materials for molecular electronics including molecular memories. Optimized preparation and understanding of the material properties is not possible without this new type of enthalpy/entropy evaluations.

Abstract:As a newly synthesized two-dimensional carbon material, the stability study of monolayer fullerene networks or quasi-hexagonal phase fullerenes (qhp-C60) is timely desirable. We have investigated the stabilities of qhp-C60, including thermal, structural, mechanical, and thermodynamic stabilities, as well as the bonding characteristics, ductility, and mechanical properties, via first-principles calculations. The results show that qhp-C60 is energetically, mechanically, and thermodynamically stable. The thermodynamic stability of qhp-C60 at 300 K and 600 K is verified. The bonding characteristics of qhp-C60 are analyzed from the bond length, and it has sp2 and sp3 hybridization. The Pugh ratio (B/G) and Poisson's ratio (v) indicate similar ductility with graphite and graphene. We also found that qhp-C60 has the lowest hardness and the anisotropy of the material. In addition, the electronic characteristics, including electron localization function (ELF), crystal orbital Hamiltonian population (COHP), and density of states (DOS) at different temperatures, are analyzed to verify the thermal stability of the material. Our results might be helpful in the material design of qhp-C60-related applications.

Abstract:The geometrical configuration, electronic structure, molecular energy levels and dipole moment were obtained, by using B3LYP method based density functional theory (DFT) for three kinds of C48 isomers,which are C48 fullerene, peanut-like-2C24 polymer and C48 non-fullerene, respectively. The results showed that C48 non-fullerene has the superior chemical stability, C48 fullerene molecule has higher chemical stability than the peanut-like-2C24 polymer.
Structures and stabilities of mixed clusters of fullerene and coronene molecules

Abstract:We have performed molecular dynamics simulations on the formation of mixed molecular clusters of buckminsterfullerene and coronene, $(\mathrm{C}_{24}\mathrm{H}_{12})_n(\mathrm{C}_{60})_{N-n}$. We report on our findings on the structures and their relative stabilities for cluster sizes $N=5$ and 13 and for all possible combinations of the two species within these sizes, including the pure clusters of each type. Generally, we see that the two species mix rather poorly and that compactly bound clusters are favoured over spatially extended ones. For a given ratio of coronene and fullerene, clusters with one or two coronene stacks tend to be more stable than those with a larger number of stacks. In the case of small clusters, the coronene and fullerene molecules tend to separate into two different cluster parts. For larger clusters, this is often but not always the case.
