Abstract:Turbulent two-phase combustion is widely encountered in spray and pulverized-coal combustors, and large-eddy simulation (LES) becomes a powerful CFD method for its simulation, because LES can give unsteady flame structures and more reasonable statistical results than Reynolds-averaged modeling. Present combustion models in LES either lack of generality or are computationally too expensive. A statistical moment model based on the idea of turbulence modeling called “second-order moment (SOM) combustion model” was developed by the present authors for LES of two-phase combustion. In this paper, a review is given on our published research results for SOM-LES of two-phase combustion, including the description of the SOM-LES model, its application, validation of statistical results by experiments, as well as the phenomena obtained by instantaneous results.

Abstract:Large-eddy simulation (LES) is under its rapid development and is recognized as a possible second generation of CFD methods used in engineering. Large-eddy simulation of two-phase flows and combustion is particularly important for engineering applications. Some investigators, including the present authors, give their review on LES of spray combustion in gas-turbine combustors and internal combustion engines. However, up to now only a few papers are related to the state-of-the-art on LES of gas-particle flows and combustion. In this paper a review of the advances in LES of complex gas-particle flows and coal combustion is presented. Different sub-grid scale (SGS) stress models and combustion models are described, some of the main results are summarized, and some research needs are discussed.

Abstract:Non-premixed turbulent combustion at a supercritical pressure is an important physicochemical phenomenon in many propulsion and power-generation systems. In this paper, a modified flamelet-progress-variable model, in which a simple term is proposed to approximately account for the extra turbulent mixing related to large density difference between two fluid streams, has been developed and incorporated into a single-phase general fluid numerical scheme in RANS framework for solving supercritical-pressure turbulent combustion of hydrocarbon fuels. The model was validated and then applied for studying the coaxial injection and turbulent combustion of LOx/methane and the swirling injection and turbulent combustion of LOx/kerosene at various supercritical pressures. Results indicate that for the coaxial injection and combustion of LOx/methane at a mixture ratio of 3, flame length decreases as chamber pressure increases, dictated by the penetration capability of the injected LOx stream. For the swirling injection and combustion of LOx/kerosene at supercritical pressures, flame moves closer to the injector as chamber pressure increases. This phenomenon at a higher pressure is similar to that caused by an increased inlet-flow swirling number. It suggests that increasing chamber pressure may lead to a shorter combustor for the turbulent combustion of LOx and hydrocarbon fuels. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Turbulent combustion is often accompanied by complex phenomena of flow and combustion. Combining with advanced combustion model, LES provides a powerful tool to simulate turbulent combustion. Based on flamelet model, with a progress variable introduced, the flamelet/progress variable approach is enabled to describe complex phenomena in turbulent combustion such as local extinction and re-ignition. Recently, in order to validate the LES based flamelet/progress variable (LES-FPV) approach, a series of numerical simulations were carried out. In the simulations of non-premixed flame, partially premixed flame, lifted flame and swirl flame, the approach showed good performance and was then used to simulate gas turbine combustor, and to predict some basic combustion phenomena. With continuous development, LES-FPV approach will play an increasingly important role in simulating turbulent combustion.

Nowadays the fundamental studies of combustion already become an accurate quantitative science,and are used to solve engineering problems through numerical modeling.The combustion modeling is under its development from Reynolds averaged modeling to large-eddy simulation and direct numerical simulation.In memory of Academician Professor Wu Chengkang's 80 Anniversary,in this paper,some advances in the fundamental studies of laminar combustion,turbulent combustion,two-phase combustion and numerical modeling of turbulent combustion and their application in engineering are reviewed,including some research results obtained by Prof.Wu and the present author.

Abstract:Swirling spray flames are widely encountered in gas-turbine combustors, rocket and ram-jet engines and internal combustion engines. Large-eddy simulation (LES) with different sub-grid scale (SGS) stress and combustion models is frequently used for studying the combustion mechanism of liquid fuel and design of combustors. In this paper, LES with a statistical-moment combustion model was used for studying a swirling spray flame. The statistical results for velocity, temperature and species concentration were validated by both experimental results and DNS database, showing the reliability of the simulation results. The instantaneous results give the spiral structures of flames formed by swirl, which can intensify combustion.

Abstract:Large-eddy simulation (LES) is under its rapid development and is recognized as a possible second generation of CID methods used in engineering. Spray and coal combustion is widely used in power, transportation, chemical and metallurgical, iron and steel making, aeronautical and astronautical engineering, hence LES of spray and coal two-phase combustion is particularly important for engineering application. LES of two-phase combustion attracts more and more attention; since it can give the detailed instantaneous flow and flame structures and more exact statistical results than those given by the Reynolds averaged modeling (RANS modeling). One of the key problems in LES is to develop sub-grid scale (SOS) models, including SOS stress models and combustion models. Different investigators proposed or adopted various SOS models. In this paper the present author attempts to review the advances in studies on LES of spray and coal combustion, including the studies done by the present author and his colleagues. Different SOS models adopted by different investigators are described, some of their main results are summarized, and finally some research needs are discussed.

Abstract:Although up to now many research results are obtained both in China and around the world for Reynolds-averaged modeling (RANS modeling), large-eddy simulation (LES) and point-particle direct numerical simulation (Point-particle DNS) of turbulent two-phase combustion(spray and solid-fuel combustion), but many problems still remain to be solved. In this paper the present author indicates some research needs in fundamental studies and numerical simulation based on his understanding to the present state of the development for the reference of related investigators.

A brief review is given in this paper, and the unsolved problems are discussed.

Abstract:As one of the most successful methodologies for turbulence modeling in science and engineering application, large eddy simulation (LES) has become one of the most promising models for the study of turbulent flow and combustion in internal combustion engine (ICE) over the past decade, since it can provide detailed information about the three-dimensional transient turbulent in-cylinder processes with reasonable computing cost. In this paper a review of the current status and new developments of researches on LES applications in ICE is given and most significant results are presented. The basic concept, method and subgrid models of LES are outlined, and the development and achievements of LES, both domestic and international, are described with emphasis on the in-cylinder flow field, fuel injection and atomization as well as the two-phase spray turbulent combustion. Finally, existing problems in the current application of LES in ICE and possible solutions are discussed.

Abstract:The recent advances in developing the full two-fluid model of coal combustion, including its experimental validation and the studies on the effect of various factors, such as swirl, inlet blocking, coal concentration, gas reburning and particle temperature fluctuation, on NO formation in coal combustion, are reported. Also, the recent advances in developing the second-order moment combustion model for large-eddy simulation of non-premixed swirling and jet combustion and bluff-body stabilized premixed combustion, including its experimental verification and comparison with other combustion models, are reviewed.

Abstract:Turbulent swirling flows and methane-air swirling diffusion combustion are studied by large-eddy simulation (LES) using a Smagorinsky-Lilly subgrid scale turbulence model and a second-order moment (SOM) SGS combustion model, and also by RANS modeling using the Reynolds Stress equation model with the IPCM+wall and IPCM pressure-strain models and SOM combustion model. The LES statistical results for swirling flows give good agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the adopted subgrid-scale turbulence model is suitable for swirling flows. The LES instantaneous results show the complex vortex shedding pattern in swirling flows. The initially formed large vortex structures soon break up in swirling flows. The LES statistical results of combustion modeling are near the experimental results and are as good as the RANS-SOM modeling results. The LES results show that the size and range of large vortex structures in swirling combustion are different from those of isothermal swirling flows, and the chemical reaction is intensified by the large-eddy vortex structures.

Abstract:Predictive simulation of the combustion process in engine is crucial to understand the complex underlying physicochemical processes, improve engine performance, and reduce pollutant emissions. Key issues such as the physical modeling of the interaction between turbulence, chemistry and droplets, and the incorporation of the detailed chemistry in high-fidelity simulations of complex flows remain essential though challenging. This paper reviews the transported probability density function method for turbulent dilute spray flames in the dual-Lagrangian framework that shows potential to address some critical modeling issues. An overview is presented for the contributions made within the last decade or so for the three key ingredients for modeling the interaction between turbulence, chemistry and droplets, i.e., micro-mixing, subgrid dispersion and two-phase coupling. Then, various methods for detailed chemistry acceleration are reviewed to address the issue of high computational cost for its use in multidimensional simulations. Finally, some applications of the dual-Lagrangian method in both laboratory-scale and device-scale configurations are provided to demonstrate its capability as well as deficiency at the current stage. Some open modeling challenges are raised and recommended for further investigation.

Abstract:Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel and is widely used as an energy source for combustion and gasification. Both experimental methods and computational tools are required for the development of new advanced, innovative clean coal technologies and systems. In particular, 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can provide detailed local and global information on the interaction of fluid dynamics, mixing, and heterogeneous and homogeneous chemical reactions even for complex systems such as combustors, gasifiers, or chemical reactors. The predictive capabilities of CFD simulations depend directly on appropriate models and their mutual interactions. The current state of modeling is reviewed in this paper and the need for further improvements of both individual models and their respective coupling is addressed. In addition, to evaluate and validate the models and their interactions, systems with increasing complexity and well-defined boundary and operating conditions are required that can provide suitable experimental data. A number of reference burners and combustors, developed especially at universities and research institutions, are also presented and recent simulation data for these systems is reviewed.

Abstract:Predictive simulation of engine combustion is key to understanding the underlying complicated physicochemical processes, improving engine performance, and reducing pollutant emissions. Critical issues as turbulence modeling, turbulence-chemistry interaction, and accommodation of detailed chemical kinetics in complex flows remain challenging and essential for high-fidelity combustion simulation. This paper reviews the current status of the state-of-the-art large eddy simulation (LES)/prob-ability density function (PDF)/detailed chemistry approach that can address the three challenging modelling issues. PDF as a subgrid model for LES is formulated and the hybrid mesh-particle method for LES/PDF simulations is described. Then the development need in micro-mixing models for the PDF simulations of turbulent premixed combustion is identified. Finally the different acceleration methods for detailed chemistry are reviewed and a combined strategy is proposed for further development.

Abstract:Gas-assisted pulverized coal combustion in the laboratory-scale Cambridge Coal Burner configuration CCB1 is studied using a large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with a multistream flamelet/progress variable (FPV) model in an Euler-Lagrange framework. The FPV-LES implementation is coupled with an enthalpy correction method for two-phase energy transfer. Both nonreacting and reacting (pure pilot and coal flame) cases are simulated, and the simulation results are compared with the experimental evidence. The agreement of the simulation results with the measurements is found to be reasonable. However, it is necessary to note that the experimental data mainly focus on the far upstream region where coal combustion effects are limited. The flame structures of the pure pilot flame and coal flame are carefully analyzed across the entire simulation domain. Different gas flame modes are identified for the coal flame as a function of the downstream coordinate, namely typical premixed flame (far upstream), double flame (middle), and typical nonpremixed flame (far downstream). The time histories of coal particles are traced to demonstrate the relation between gas flame modes and the devolatilization process. Moreover, the average distance between the particles is used to distinguish between the group combustion mode found near the center of the burner and the individual particle combustion mode located in the outer region of the flame, which is in agreement with experimental observations. This study provides new insights into the flame characteristics of swirling gas-assisted pulverized coal flames and adds to the knowledge database on FPV-LES modeling of pulverized coal combustion.

Abstract:Large-eddy simulation (LES) of a swirling pulverized-coal flame was made using a Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with a Smagorinsky-Lilly sub-grid scale stress model, presumed-PDF fast chemistry and EBU gas combustion models, coal particle devolatilization and char combustion models, and was validated by experiments. The LES statistical results were validated by the measurement results for swirling gas combustion made by the present authors and for pulverized-coal flame reported in references. The instantaneous LES results showed that the coherent structures for a gas-particle flame was stronger than that for a swirling gas flame. The particles were concentrated in the periphery of the coherent structures. The flame was located at the high vorticity and high particle concentration zone.

Abstract:Swirling flows and methane-air swirling diffusion combustion are studied by large-eddy simulation (LES) using a Smagorinsky-Lilly subgrid-scale (SGS) turbulence model, a second-order moment (SOM) SGS combustion model, proposed by the present authors, and an eddy-break-up (EBU) combustion model used by some investigators. The LES statistical results are compared with the experimental results and the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) modeling results using the Reynolds stress equation model and the SOM combustion model. For swirling flows, the LES statistical results give better agreement with the experimental results than the RANS modeling, indicating that the adopted SGS turbulence model is suitable for swirling flows. For swirling combustion, both the SOM SGS combustion model and the RANS-SOM model give results in good agreement with the experimental results, but the LES-EBU modeling results are not in agreement with the experimental results. The LES instantaneous results show large vortices formed in the shear layer and a complex vortex shedding pattern in the downstream region. It is shown that combustion weakens the vortex structures, combustion is intensified by the coherent structures, and swirl thickens the flame front.

Abstract:This paper reports on recent progress in the modelling of pulverised coal flames. A brief review of current research on fully‐resolved and Euler‐Lagrange simulations in the context of flamelet modelling of pulverised coal combustion is given first. This is followed by more recent results from the flamelet modelling of SOx formation due to fuel‐S in pulverised coal flames.
