Abstract:Narrative clinical documents contain a wealth of information for medical study.Indexing these documents using concepts in a biomedical terminology can improve information retrieval and mining in medical records.International studies in this domain have developed for several years,but the study based on Chinese clinical document remains a blank.After analyzing special character of Chinese medical language,this paper integrated Chinese version of International Classification of Disease(ICD) to the Unified Medical Language System(UMLS) terminology system and proposed a set of term extraction and negation detection method for Chinese clinical document which could be used to build concept-based index for documents.In the term extract phase the high-sensitivity Reverse Maximum Matching(RMM) method was used and a general Chinese word segmentation tool was used to decline false positive results.In negation detection phase,a simplified syntax pattern matching was proposed.Two algorithms were tested and evaluated in 2 clinical documents data sets.Term extract algorithm had a sensitivity of 99.51% and 100% while wrong detection rate 1.46% and 1.66%.Both negation detection algorithms had a positive predictive value of 100%,and negative predictive values of 100% and 98.99%.The negation detection algorithm could perfectly work except unusual punctuation used in clinical documents.

Abstract:This paper examines the linguistic challenges in translating English medical terminology into Chinese, finding appropriate translations equivalents for their individual denotations and connotations, and considering also how they take their place in terminological structures such as hyponymy in both languages. In the examples discussed, the Chinese translation equivalents are often more explicit in their reference than their English counterparts, and find alternative ways to explain the term’s meaning. The indeterminacy of some general science terms and within many English medical compounds is resolved in their Chinese translation equivalents, and acronyms are unpacked—albeit in rather lengthy paraphrases. Translations for euphemistic terms are found in more and less explicit paraphrases, from which translators and health professionals can select the most appropriate for the context of communication. Because of the continuous advances in medical terminology, keeping pace with the range of Chinese translation equivalents presents challenges to bilingual terminographers. The need to automate the extraction of bilingual terminology from large corpora is evident, both for the purposes of machine translation, and to build computational ontologies for knowledge abstracting from large medical databases.

Abstract:Understanding lexical characteristics of clinical documents is the foundation of sublanguage based Medical Language Processing (MLP) approach.However, there are limited studies focused on the lexical characters of Chinese clinical documents.In this study, a lexical characteristics analysis on both syntactic and semantic levels was conducted in a clinical corpus which contains 3,500 clinical documents generated during daily practices.The analysis was based on the automatic tagging results of a lexiconbased part-of-speech (POS) and semantic tagging method.The medical lexicon contains 237,291 entries annotated with both semantic and syntactic classes.The normalized frequency of different terms, syntactic and semantic classes was calculated and visualized.Major contribution of this paper is providing a wide-coverage Chinese medical semantic lexicon and presenting the lexical characteristics of Chinese clinical documents.Both of these will lay a good foundation for sublanguage based MLP studies in China.

Abstract:To discuss the principles, methods and laws for English translation of terminologies in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) basic theories. The author suggested that the word-formation laws of medical English should be explored in referring to the historical experience of medical word-formation by way of retrieving Chinese and foreign literature concerning TCM English translation, and applied in the English translation of TCM terms. The program for English translation of TCM should be multiple method, the principle for word chosen should be concise and chastening, thus to gradually make the English translation of TCM terms standardized.

Abstract:Rapid advances in medical sciences produce an enormous number of neologisms that are not promptly included in the dictionaries. Corpus technology and IT have furnished language researchers and lexicographers with more effective and efficient means than traditional manual efforts of extracting neologisms. Online dictionaries are gaining popularity against those in print. This paper reports a corpus-based project aimed to build an English–Chinese neological medical termbase. For this purpose, a corpus and an exclusion list have been prepared, the former containing the articles published in the top four comprehensive medical journals from 2010 to 2015 and the latter composed of entry items in a recently published bilingual medical dictionary, a general English lexicon, and all entry items in a name dictionary. Medical neologisms extracted from the corpus are being standardized and translated into Chinese, thus constituting the intended termbase. A search engine has been constructed and will be launched as the outlet of the termbase for the target users.

Abstract:China English, standard English with Chinese characteristics, exists largely in English translation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) terms with unique Chinese philosophy and culture. This study conducts a translation criticism on English Translation of TCM terms selected from Classified Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine from the perspective of China English under the guidance of Coordination Theory of Translation, that is, translators are required to coordinate all aspects and relationships in translation to the greatest extent. The key issues to be resolved in this study are as follows: 1) What are the word-formation methods of China English in the translation of TCM terms? 2) How should English translations of TCM terms in Classified Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine be evaluated? 3) What strategies, methods, and techniques should be adopted in English translation of TCM terms? Through the translation criticism of typical cases, conclusions are made as follows: firstly, domestication and foreignization strategies should be used together in a coordinated way on translation of TCM terms; secondly, as for terms whose corresponding expressions cannot be found in Western medicine, the translator should coordinate the use of various translation methods and techniques, such as literal translation plus free translation, transliteration with annotation, and literal translation with annotation. The findings of this study are expected to promote the normalization and standardization of English translation of TCM terms as well as provide some implications for future studies on TCM translation.

Abstract:Yinshan Zhengyao, the first comprehensive treatise on nutrition in China, not only encompasses a diverse array of medicinal recipes, food materials, and cooking techniques but also sheds light on historical cultural exchanges between China and other regions during the Yuan Dynasty. As a result, it holds significant historical value for the advancement of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and the study of diet culture. Moreover, the English translation of Yinshan Zhengyao is equally noteworthy for its contribution to the internationalization of TCM. Nevertheless, the intricacies of food nomenclature, obscure Chinese medical terms, and culturally nuanced expressions present formidable challenges for translators. This article critically examines the translations of TCM health care terms pertaining to material and cultural elements found within the English rendition of Yinshan Zhengyao, delving into the translators’ strategies and methods.

Abstract:The true meanings of the terms of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) need to be analyzed on a logical basis. It is not suitable to use a new term to interpret an old term of TCM, or arbitrarily specify the special term of TCM corresponding to some substances of modern medicine. In philosophy of language, language has a logical structure, which reflects the structure of the world, that is to say, language is the picture of the world in a logical sense. Using this idea, the authors collected the ancient literature on "kidney essence",and extracted each necessary condition for "kidney essence" . All necessary conditions formed a sufficient condition to define the term "kidney essence" . It is expected that this example can show the effectiveness of philosophy of language in analysis of the terms of TCM.

Abstract:HuangDi NeiJing, the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, a foundational classic of Chinese medical theory, is ranked as the first among the four most important classics of traditional Chinese medicine. Translation of culture-specific Lexicon is a pivot, also a nodus in translating Huangdi Neijing, so, chewing over it is of important meaning for English translation of the Chinese classic or even for that of whole Chinese medicine. In expectation of somewhat contribution to the development of the Chinese medical English discipline, the classification and translation strategy for culture-specific lexicon were discussed by the authors in this paper through an empirical study on comparing the different terms translated in two versions of Huangdi Neijing translation.

Abstract:In the Chinese history of translation, the era of the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty is considered one of the four great periods of history during which translation activities abounded. This period witnessed in particular the arrival of large numbers of Jesuits and the emergence of quantities of scientific and technological translations covering a wide field of disciplines, thus distinguishing it from the other three periods. These translations resulted from the combination of several factors including economic, socio-cultural, psychological, and linguistic factors, and have in turn deeply influenced modern Chinese society. Given the importance of the translation activities of this period to the whole of Chinese history, this paper attempts to reflect on these activities and to give a brief presentation of them in order to identify their specificities, the superficial and underlying reasons for this translation boom, and their influence on modern Chinese society.

Abstract:The medical information carried in electronic medical records has high clinical research value, and medical named entity recognition is the key to extracting valuable information from large-scale medical texts. At present, most of the studies on Chinese medical named entity recognition are based on character vector model or word vector model. Owing to the complexity and specificity of Chinese text, the existing methods may fail to achieve good performance. In this study, we propose a Chinese medical named entity recognition method that fuses character and word vectors. The method expresses Chinese texts as character vectors and word vectors separately and fuses them in the model for features. The proposed model can effectively avoid the problems of missing character vector information and inaccurate word vector partitioning. On the CCKS 2019 dataset for the named entity recognition task of Chinese electronic medical records, the proposed model achieves good performance and can effectively improve the accuracy of Chinese medical named entity recognition compared with other baseline models.

Abstract:This article introduces the document, Considerations in the Translation of Chinese Medicine, published in PDF form online in both Chinese and English. This 20-page document includes several sections describing why the Considerations is necessary, the specificity of texts in Chinese medicine; the history of translation in Chinese medicine; who constitutes an ideal translator of Chinese medicine; what types of language exist in Chinese medicine; and specific issues in the translation of Chinese medicine, such as domestication versus foreignization, technical terminology, period-specific language, style, polysemy, and etymological translation. The final section offers a brief advisory for consumers, and concludes with a call to further discussion, and action, specifically in the development of international collaborative efforts towards the creation of more rigorous guidelines for the translation of Chinese medicine. The current article provides an overview of several of these sections, and includes links to the original document.

Abstract:Prior to the twentieth century,Chinese scholars accepted quan ti xue(全体学)as a Chinese equivalent for "anatomy," before finally adopting jie pou xue(解剖学).The previous assumption that the latter term was imported from Japan is questionable.In fact,the medical missionary and British doctor John Dudgeon,who was also tutor of medicine at the Tong Wen Guan(the Imperial Tong Wen College),had employed terms like jie pou(解剖),jie pou xue(解剖学)and wai ke jie pou xue(外科解剖学)in his translation of Quan Ti Tong Kao(全体通考,Gray's Anatomy)in 1886 to introduce Western knowledge of the body and anatomy,at just about the same time as 解剖 became a special term referring to the branch of science in Japan.The scientific thought,and the life science research methodology and approach expressed in Quan Ti Tong Kao represented the state of art in anatomy at the time and provided solid ground for the final establishment of the term jie pou xue in China.The Chinese term jie pou xue in the modern sense is the outcome of interaction among different languages and scientific ideas.
