Abstract:This paper focuses on the reconstruction of the endings *-l and *-r in Old Chinese with the comparison of the Old Chinese loanwords in Korean, Vietnamese and Tibeto-Burman languages. The ending *-r had changed into *-n in the central China and *-j in the eastern China then.

Abstract:The words borrowed from Old Chinese with cluster initials would split into two syllables in Korean, and the final of the second syllable would be lost as a result of reduction. This paper discusses the method of identification of Old Chinese loanwords in Korean through such examples as 丝(silk), 麦(wheat), 马(horse), and 力(plough), and the cultural contacts of ancient peoples in East Asia are also discussed.

Abstract:The paper discusses two types of unaspirated stops and affricates evolved from MC voiced initials in Hakka and Gan dialects,one of which are colloquial words.Some colloquial words,such as empty words,are exceptions to phonological change rules whereas others may have evolved from MC voiceless initials rather than the familiar voiced ones.The other type involves non-colloquial words that have either converted sound classes or borrowed sound values directly from Mandarin,during the process of which the sound class may have been revalued The confusion of these two types of pronunciations have led to mistakes.For instance,some scholars insist that the unaspirated stop of the colloquial word bian辫is a result under the influence of Putonghua,whereas others have mistakenly ascribed the unaspirated stops and affricates of some rare or even dead words to the substratum of the earlier phonological system.

Abstract:In this paper the authors propose several methods to identify the ancient Chinese loan words in Korean through the relevant historical sound changes,and make several loan words such as"丝(silk)","麦(wheat)","力(force,plough)" and "臿(spade)" for examples in order to discover the cultural communication between China and Korea in the ancient times.Meanwhile,the authors take the cognate"land" for an example to demonstrate the relationship between ancient Chinese language and Korean language through the historical comparison.

Abstract:By observing the consonantal initial conditions of the closing diphthongization from a former *u rhyme which occurred in characters belonging to Middle mu rhyme group ((sic)韵(sic)) in modern Chinese dialects, it would be find that the closing diphthongization of u rhyme behind different types of initials observes the following hierarchy principle: +P/+K<+T<+Ts<+n<+l. From the perspective of phonetics, the problem why the diphthongization of u rhyme behind grave initials usually implies the diphthongization behind acute initials can be explained.
The coarticulation resistance of consonants in standard Chinese - An electropalatographic and acoustic study.

Abstract:The coarticulation resistance (CR) for 21 initial consonants in Standard Chinese was examined in CV monosyllables and symmetrical V1#C2V2 sequences (# stands for morpheme boundary) by analyzing the electropalatographic (EPG) and acoustic signals. The slope for F2 locus equation was compared with that for articulatory regression function, which was calculated by regressing the total linguopalatal contact ratio for vowel target frame against that for consonantal release/approach frame. The results show that the slopes derived from the articulatory regression functions for each consonant was the most appropriate measure to designate the consonant CR. When put together, the CR scale for Standard Chinese was represented by a continuum with an ascending order: labial < velar < alveolar < dental, retroflex, and alveolo-palatal consonants. This consonant CR scale applied not only in the CV monosyllable set but also in V1#C2/#C2V2 transitions in V1#C2V2 sequences. The overall results of the paper support the DAC model in that the coarticulation resistance for consonants was closely dependent on the involvement of tongue dorsum gesture in segment production. © 2012 IEEE.

Abstract:In some Chinese Northwest dialects,the ancient voiced initials,regardless of whether they are even or oblique tone,all become voiceless aspirated.We will give an introduction to their geographical distribution according to Phonetics Map 039 of Linguistic Atlas of Chinese Dialects.Some fundamental maps are also provided.We will also discuss the impact of such dialect on how to choose the criteria of regional classification of dialects.
Cross-Linguistic Phonetic Variation in Bilingual Speech: Cantonese /n/ > [l] Merger in Early Cantonese-English Bilinguals

Abstract:/n/ is merging with /l/ in Cantonese, as well as in several other Chinese languages. The Cantonese merger appears categorical, with /n/ becoming /l/ syllable-initially. This project aims to describe /n/ and /l/ in Cantonese and English speech from early Cantonese-English bilinguals to better understand the status of the merger in Cantonese and its potential for cross-linguistic mutual influence. We examine early bilinguals' (n = 34) speech using the Speech in Cantonese and English (SpiCE) corpus, focusing on pre-vocalic /n/ and /l/ onsets in both languages. Items were auditorily coded for their perceived category identity, and two acoustic measures anticipated to have the potential to differentiate /n/ and /l/ within and across languages were applied. In English, bilinguals maintained a clear contrast between /n/ and /l/ in the auditory coding and in acoustic measurements. In Cantonese, however, there were higher rates of [l] for /n/ items, in line with the merger, and [n] for /l/ items, indicating hypercorrection of the pattern. Across languages, bilinguals produced language-specific /l/s, but there were no acoustic differences between Cantonese and English /n/. The participation of Cantonese /n/ in a sound change does not appear to compromise English /n/s' patterning, suggesting that Cantonese and English /n/ are maintained as distinct categories in the minds of early bilinguals.
An Investigation of Vowel Epenthesis in Chinese Learners' Production of German Consonants.

Abstract:The present study investigates the influence of phonetic factors on the frequency of vowel epenthesis in the German speech of Chinese learners. The subjects were intermediate learners of German who entered Germany within five months of their study. Descriptive statistics were performed on the data collected from reading tasks, and phonetic analysis was provided to explain the phenomenon of epenthesis. In the main experiment, eighteen Chinese students were recruited to read 50 phonetically rich sentences with various sentence modes after one month residence in Germany. Results indicate that these learners employed the epenthesis strategy more or less in producing consonant codas and consonant onset clusters in German. An investigation in the frequency of epenthesis in relation to various factors demonstrates that consonant cluster length, L1 transfer, markedness, sonority, and articulatory timing influence the occurrences of epenthesis simultaneously. An additional experiment was conducted after a time span of three months, ten of these subjects were requested to read the same text, the result shows that the amount of epenthesis decreases with the increase of the length of residence and German language learning experience. These findings might shed some light on the acquisition process of consonant codas in foreign languages.

Abstract:Relations between noun modifiers or adnonimals and their head nouns, along with their distribution features, differentiate the stylistic features among languages, and distinguish text genres in a given language. Following a systematic and comprehensive description of adnominal constructions in modern Chinese, this paper explores their rank-frequency distribution properties against three models: the original Zipf’s law, the Zipf-Alekseev law and the Popescu-Altmann-Köhler (PAK) function, with acceptable result for the first and good results for the latter two. The PAK function as a function for stratified texts works well. The research findings validate the categorization in the paper and further prove that adnominals in modern Chinese are normal language units.

Abstract:Based on his thorough research on the systematic data of 136 Hakka dialects,the author has found that the modern pronunciation of Hakka's ancient initial RI is being discussed,and further reconstructed the earliest form of it.Finally,he discusses the pronunciation of the word in off rhyme and its development of phonetic drift in Chinese Northern dialects.He points out that the weak form of the initial RI in Guangdong dialect and Hakka happened lately is just the phonetic drift which happened previously to Chinese Northern dialects.

Abstract:Alternation between characters which were velar initials and labial initials respectively in Middle Chinese is found in excavated Chu documents of the Warring State Period,which indicates that labialized velar initials became labial initials when followed by back vowels in ancient Chu dialect sometime approximately between the seventh to the fifth centuries BC.

Abstract:It is widely accepted that vowels are longer before voiced consonants than before voiceless ones in many languages (such as English). However, neither voiced-voiceless stop contrasts nor long-short vowel contrasts exist in Mandarin Chinese. This study investigates whether the Chinese learners exhibit a difference in vowel duration as a function of the stop voicing in their L2 English production and perception. The production measurements in the Chinese L2 English TIMIT database demonstrated a similar effect as that of the native speakers. In the perceptual experiment with 56 Chinese participants, the results showed that therewas a general tendency for the subjects to choose voiced stops when the preceding vowels were lengthened, but there was no significant difference between the intermediateand the advanced-level learners. However, the Chinese learners displayed different perceptual patterns in different vowels and stops. The results have some implications for L2 English speech learning.

Abstract:It is generally accepted that the Yi (以) initial of Middle Chinese is derived from *l- of Old Chinese. However, evidence from bamboo slips of Chu(楚) State and other ancient books suggests that the Yi(以) initial and other initials in the same Xiesheng(谐声) series should be reconstructed as consonant clusters. Considering the Xiesheng(谐声) behavior, the source of the Yi(以) initial can be reconstructed as *ql- in Old Chinese, and other initials in the same Xiesheng(谐声) series as other *Ql- clusters correspondingly.
A Study on the Evolution of the Verbal Syntactic Valence Based on Corpus

Abstract:The paper aims at studying the evolution process of the syntactic valence of verbs. In the study, three corpuses, i.e. the corpus of ancient classical Chinese,the corpus of ancient vernacular and the corpus of modern vernacular, are constructed. We selected ten main verbs as the objects of the research, and suggested some methods of sample sentence selecting and analyzing. The complements and modifications of the verbs are analyzed in this paper. It reveals that Chinese grammer changes gradually. The ancient classical Chinese and the ancient vernacular are more similar in sentence structures. After the transformation from the ancient vernacular to the modern vernacular, the complexity of Chinese sentences is increased sharply, indicating that Chinese sentence structures have changed greatly after the transformation from ancient vernacular to modern vernacular.

Abstract:A foreign accent involves discrete phonetic features which can be acoustically analyzed.However, these phonetic features are often masked perceptually by other features, such as prosodic features.This study presents an acoustic analysis of the postvocalic /l/ in Chinese learners, as an example, and puts these results into context with a perception test, which targets the overall aspects of an audible foreign accent.Mandarin Chinese does not allow consonant finals except /n/ and /ng/ which leads to the question, how well can Mandarin speakers of German produce a clear /l/ in syllable final position.This study investigates 490 German speech tokens with embedded postvocalic /l/ produced by 12 Mandarin speakers from three different proficiency levels, as well as two native German reference speakers.The acoustic analysis indicates that the /l/ productions of Mandarin speakers are darker than those of native Germans.No relationship could be found between darkness of /l/ and proficiency levels.The data reveals that preceding back vowels favour dark realization and vocalization of /l/.A perception test involving the produced tokens with 10 native German listeners suggests that dark realization of /l/ contributes to foreign accent, while other factors -such as expectation and previous knowledge of listeners or overall accent strength and prosodic quality -influence the postvocalic /l/ assessment.

Abstract:Affixes in Chinese show some special characteristics and they are not as typical as affixes in other languages.This paper argues that Chinese affixes are not too much different from root morphemes,therefore derivation is not a full-fledged morphological process in Chinese.The properties of Chinese morphemes make compounding the prominent word-forming device of this language.

Abstract:The initial correspondences of Sino-Tibetan related words identified by Gong Hwang-chcrng are reanalyzed in this paper. The Old Chinese correspondences to Written Tibetan consonant clusters, Cv-C-, are taken as examples to show one-to-many matches in initial correspondences of Sino-Tibetan related words. The interpretation on those matches highlights the problem about what part of Written Tibetan consonant cluster is appropriate to be compared with the single initial in Old Chinese. Internal changes, chronological layers induced by language contact and morphological process are tried to solve this problem. However, many correspondences remain inexplicable. The results then show the serious handicap in justifying the genuine Sino-Tibetan cognates.

Abstract:Nanjing has been recognized as one of the four Great Ancient Capitals of China where Wu dialect was originally spoken but later replaced by Jianghuai Mandarin due to the northern immi-grants’settlement in the Jianghuai area during different periods of history.This paper explores the diachronic age-based variations of the entering tone of Dang and Jiang rhyme classes (shè)in terms of phonetic data collected from seniors,middle aged,young adults and adolescents.In addition,it ana-lyzes phonetic levels of these sounds and discusses the means and stages of Putonghua’s intervention and diffusion into the Nanjing dialect,thereby to point out the possible evolutionary track and devel-opmental trend of the entering tone in the Nanjing dialect.

Abstract:To verify whether a phonetic phenomenon of Beijing dialect is the outcome of external influence,researchers should pay attention to its position in the phonetic system and the relationship between Beijing dialect and other dialects rather than viewing it in isolation.If the whole phonetic system of a dialect does not display obvious signs of influence of Beijing dialect,the claim that er-final is of a Beijing dialect origin will be on shaky basis.The wide distribution,diverse form and productive function of er-final in Mandarin Chinese manifests this phenomenon could not have originated from Beijing dialect only.With no er-final in itself,Manchu cannot be a driving factor for the emergence of er-final in Mandarin Chinese.As is documented in some ancient books,this phenomenon arose in the Ming Dynasty.Therefore,er-final cannot serve as valid evidence for the existence of Manchu-style Chinese.

Abstract:By comparing the three different versions of the book Nokeoltae Eonhae, this paper reexamines the vanishment of the vowel“?”[?] and the sound change of back vowels during the 16-18 century. The paper points out that the ifrst syllable vowels in Korean are very stable and are characteristic of “the stability of the initial syllabic vowel”of the Altay Language Family. Ramstedt claimed that Korean did not meet this rule because he overlooked the impact of adjacent consonants and ending of rhyme on the assimilation of vowels. According to this feature, we can further conifrm that Korean belongs to the Altay Language Family.
