Abstract:The name of first appeared in the documents in early Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 B.C.-771 B.C.), but its origin has remained unclear in history. It may not be the original name of the Xia Dynasty, but one given by later people in terms of sound translation. It was called Xia as was a common, honorary term given to all dynasties. This general term was based on the consciousness of sameness relationship by the three generations of Xia, Shang, and Zhou Dynasties. Their religious ideology replaced, with a common god-natured conception of heaven, the idea of god-natured king, a special signification conceived by the Yin people before; that was also founded on the sameness consciousness of the threedynasties. The reason for that common, god-natured worship lies in the inheritance of the proprieties from the Shang Dynasty, which hence led to the special succession awareness between Shang and Zhou, on the basis of which was formed the sameness consciousness, that is, the consciousness of the imperial cultural circle. The fact that the religious belief of early Zhou was based on the imperial cultural circle awareness may be adopted to support the claim of Xia as a common honorary name. That also facilitates us to place the change of religious ideology of the early Zhou Dynasty against the long Chinese historical evolution, so as to re-valuate the ideological significance of that ideological change.
