Abstract:Photonic approaches for generating and transmitting dual-chirp waveforms has been extensively studied recently. In this paper, a simplified scheme to generate and transmit dual-chirp waveforms with elimination of the dispersion-induced power fading is proposed. An integrated dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) which consists of two sub-MZMs and a phase shifter (PS) is utilized. We apply an unmodulated microwave signal as well as a baseband chirped waveform to two RF ports of DPMZM respectively, in which carrier-suppressed modulations are implemented. Then we control the PS to suppress the power fading introduced by fiber transmission. Thanks to the use of DPMZM and convenient adjustment of a direct current (DC) voltage applied to PS, the proposed scheme owns a simple structure under the condition that it can produce dual-chirp waveforms with anti-chromatic dispersion transmission. Both theoretical derivation and experimental verification are performed. In the experiments, dual-chirp waveforms centered at 14 GHz and 20 GHz with a bandwidth of 1 GHz are successfully generated and transmitted through a roll of 20 km and 10 km single-mode fibers with elimination of power fading effects. The waveform power is increased by 8.2 dB, compared with those suffering from the power fading. Different DC voltages of 2.635 V and 6.877 V are set, respectively. Since the DC voltage that determines the phase shift is related to the fiber length and signal frequency, their relationships are demonstrated experimentally. The instantaneous bandwidth limitation of the dual-chirp waveform is discussed. The feasibility of the dual-chirp waveform transmitter for one-to-multi-transmission is also discussed.
