Abstract:Recent advances in flexible magnetic film technologies have attracted wide attentions, which provides both magnetizable and flexible properties for advanced sensor and actuator integration applications. The successful performance relies on the materials, preparation technologies involving film-forming and magnetization, and characterization technologies involving microstructure, mechanical and magnetic properties. This study focused on the most up-to-date materials and key technologies. Details of preparation methods, physical properties such as flexibility, magnetic performance, and durability are provided concerning sensitivity and selectivity enhancement, and improved control performance by optimizing material and film structure design. In addition, applications of flexible magnetic films in magnetic sensing, actuator and energy conversion are discussed, as well as the key challenges and the future direction of flexible magnetic films. Combining with other materials and devices can further expand their application areas.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of electronic wearables, among which flexible magnetoelectronic skin has emerged as a key component. This technology is part of the rapidly progressing field of flexible wearable electronics, which has facilitated a new human perceptual development known as the magnetic sense. However, the magnetoelectronic skin is limited due to its low sensitivity and substantial field limitations as a wearable electronic device for sensing minor magnetic fields. Additionally, achieving efficient and non-destructive delamination in flexible magnetic sensors remains a significant challenge, hindering their development. In this study, we demonstrate a novel magnetoelectronic touchless interactive device that utilizes a flexible giant magnetoresistive sensor array. The flexible magnetic sensor array was developed through an electrochemical delamination process, and the resultant ultra-thin flexible electronic system possessed both ultra-thin and non-destructive characteristics. The flexible magnetic sensor is capable of achieving a bending angle of up to 90 degrees, maintaining its performance integrity even after multiple repetitive bending cycles. Our study also provides demonstrations of non-contact interaction and pressure sensing. This research is anticipated to significantly contribute to the advancement of high-performance flexible magnetic sensors and catalyze the development of more sophisticated magnetic electronic skins.

Abstract:Spin valve giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensors were prepared by a two-step thinning method combining grind thinning and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching together. The fabrication processes of front GMR sensors and backside ICP etching were described in detail. Magnetoresistance ratio of about 4.24% and coercive field of approximately 11 Oe were obtained in a tested bendable GMR sensor. The variations of the magnetic property in GMR sensors were explained mainly from the temperature, ion beam damage and mechanical damage generated by the fabrication process.

Abstract:A highly transparent and flexible percolative composite with magnetic reduced graphene oxide@nickel nanowire (mGN) fillers in EcoFlex matrix is proposed as a sensing layer to fabricate high-performance flexible piezoresistive sensors. Large excluded volume and alignment of mGN fillers contribute to low percolation threshold (0.27 vol %) of mGN-EcoFlex composites, leading to high electrical conductivity of 0.003 S m(-1) optical transmittance of 71.8%, and low Young's modulus of 122.8 kPa. Large-scale microdome templates for sensors are prepared by hot embossing technology cost-effectively and COMSOL Multiphysics is utilized to optimize the sensor performances. Piezoresistive sensors fabricated experimentally show superior average sensitivity of 1302.1 kPa(-1) with a low device-to-device variation of 3.74%, which provides a new way to achieve transparent, highly sensitive, and large-scale electronic skin.

Abstract:The sandwiched laminated soft magnetic films/planar coils giant magneto-impedance (GMI) sensors exhibit prominent advantages in miniaturization due to compatibility with micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS). However, the inevitable shape demagnetization leads to the effective permeability of the magnetic films being far less than the nominal permeability of the functional material, which hinders the sensitivity promotion for film-based magnetic sensors. Here, a novel approach is proposed to enhance the effective permeability by introducing micrograting patterns on the magnetic film surface for developing high-sensitivity magnetic sensors. The magnetic characterizations of the patterned films demonstrate that the magnetic polarization field generated from the groove wall end faces can significantly compensate for the shape demagnetization. Therefore, a high-sensitivity GMI microsensor with grooved grating patterned magnetic films is designed and fabricated by micromachining technology. The experimental results indicate the impedance ratio peaks at 522%, at 17.5 MHz, which demonstrates significant potential in developing the sensor array for biosensing and geomagnetic navigation. The strategy of modifying the surface morphology of a film instead of adjusting its compositions opens a new way to enhance the feature property of a functional material, especially feasible for microfabrication.
Printed magnetoresistive sensors for recyclable magnetoelectronics

Abstract:We have developed an innovative recyclable printed magnetoresistive sensor using GMR microflakes and AMR microparticles as functional fillers, with PECH as the elastomer binder. Under saturation magnetic fields of 100 mT and 30 mT, these sensors respectively exhibit magnetoresistance values of 4.7% and 0.45%. The excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability of the PECH elastomer binder endow these sensors with outstanding flexibility and temperature stability. This flexibility, low cost, and scalability make these sensors highly suitable for integration into flexible electronic devices, such as smart security systems and home automation. Moreover, these sensors are fully recyclable and reusable, allowing the materials to be separated, reused, and remanufactured without loss of performance. The low energy consumption of the production process and the recyclability of the materials significantly reduce the environmental impact of these magnetic field sensors.

Abstract:The emerging market of wearable devices for tracking and positioning requires the development of highly flexible magnetic sensors. Due to the stable magnetoresistance ratio and simple fabrication process, sensors based on the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect have been proposed as promising candidates. However, the stability of AMR sensors under different bending situations has rarely been investigated. In this work, we proposed a flexible AMR magnetic sensor deposited on an ultra-thin Kapton substrate, which exhibits excellent anti-fatigue behavior at different bending curvatures ranging from 1/3 to 1/10 mm-1. Experimental results show that the sensitivity of our proposed flexible AMR sensor remains as high as 0.25 Oe-1 after being bent 500 times, showing promising potential for application in wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Functional materials with excellent electrical and magnetic properties have a potential application in most high‐tech fields. Here, superparamagnetic graphene–Fe3O4 (G–F) nanosheet hybrids are prepared by a facile one‐step hydrothermal process, which will beneficial to well combine with various polymer matrix to get binary functional composites. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposites filled with G–F nanosheets are prepared by a three rolling method. The microstructures of G–F nanosheets as well as the electrical, piezoresistive, and magnetic properties of the G–F/PDMS nanocomposites are investigated. Slightly above the percolation threshold ( fc = 3.4 wt%), the G–F/PDMS nanocomposites with 3.65 wt% of G–F nanosheets show a high conductivity, which is about 10 orders of magnitudes higher than that of pure PDMS, showing an obvious insulator–semiconductor transition. Moreover, the resistance of the nanocomposites with G–F filler near the percolation threshold exponentially increases with the uniaxial pressure. The normalized resistance (R/R0) can reach up to 870 at 0.88 MPa with 3.65 wt% G–F nanosheets loading. The G–F/PDMS nanocomposites also show superparamagnetism with saturation magnetization values of 0.21 emu g−1. These results suggest that the G–F/PDMS nanocomposites in this work provide a new route to fabricate difunctional polymer‐based nanocomposites with a potential application as flexible touch sensors.

Abstract:Soft electronics provide effective means for continuous monitoring of a diverse set of biophysical and biochemical signals from human body. However, the sensitivities, functions, spatial distributions, and many other features of such sensors remain fixed after deployment and cannot be adjusted on demand. Here, we exploit laser‐induced porous graphene as the sensing material, and dope it with permanent magnetic particles to create hard magnetic graphene nanocomposite (HMGN) that can self‐assemble onto a flexible carrying substrate through magnetic force, in a reversible and reconfigurable manner. A set of soft electronics in HMGN exhibits enhanced performances in the measurements of electrophysiological signals, temperature, and concentrations of metabolites. All these flexible HMGN sensors can adhere to a carrying substrate at any position and in any spatial arrangement, to allow for wearable sensing with customizable sensitivity, modality, and spatial coverage. Abstract:Traditional flexible electronic sensors based on rigid conductive materials are prone to damage to the conductive network due to the modulus difference between them and the elastic substrate. In this work, using the “filling and sealing” process, we develop conductive magnetorheological fluid (cMRF) filled Ecoflex soft elastomer composite (cMFEC) based on liquid conductor by encapsulating cMRF into Ecoflex substrate. Due to the conductivity and magnetorheological effect of liquid conductor cMRF, cMFEC not only possesses the tensile sensing performance and perception ability of bending angle of conventional flexible sensors, but also manifests magnetic response properties with magnetic induced stiffness enhancement and magnetic actuation behavior. By assembling cMFEC with 3D-printed ABS structures, the variable stiffness load-bearing platform and intelligent magnetic actuated gripper are fabricated. The variable stiffness load-bearing platform shows that cMFEC has the magnetic induced stiffness enhancement characteristics. The magnetic actuated gripper can grasp, transfer, and release objects with various shapes under the control of the magnetic field of the permanent magnet, and the process can be monitored by its own electrical properties. This work provides a simple strategy for manufacturing multi-functional sensors based on liquid conductors. It can be expected that this kind of sensor based on cMRF will be a promising candidate in flexible electronic sensor.

Abstract:Ever-evolving advances in flexible magnetic sensors are promising to fuel technological developments in the fields of touchless human–machine interaction, implantable medical diagnosis, and magnetoreception for artificial intelligence. However, the realization of highly flexible and extremely sensitive magnetic sensors remains a challenge. Here, we report a cost-effective, flexible, and ultra-sensitive heterostructural magnetoelectric (ME) sensor consisting of piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) thick films and Metglas foils. The flexible sensor exhibits a strong ME coefficient of 19.3 V cm−1 Oe−1 at low frequencies and 280.5 V cm−1 Oe−1 at resonance due to the exceptionally high piezoelectric coefficient d33 ∼ 72 pC N−1 of the constituent PZT thick films. The flexible ME sensor possesses not only ultrahigh sensitivities of 200 nT at low frequencies and 200 pT at resonance but also shows an excellent mechanical endurance. Through 5000 bending cycles (radii of ∼1 cm), the sensors showed no fatigue-induced performance degradation. This ultrasensitive flexible sensor provides a platform capable of sensing and responding to external magnetic fields and will find applications in soft robotics, wearable healthcare monitoring, and consumer electronics.

Abstract:A highly sensitive flexible magnetic sensor based on the anisotropic magnetoresistance effect is fabricated. A limit of detection of 150 nT is observed and excellent deformation stability is achieved after wrapping of the flexible sensor, with bending radii down to 5 mm. The flexible AMR sensor is used to read a magnetic pattern with a thickness of 10 μm that is formed by ferrite magnetic inks.

Abstract:We fabricated [Co/Cu] multilayers revealing a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect on free-standing elastic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) membranes. The GMR performance of [Co/Cu] multilayers on rigid silicon and on free-standing PDMS is similar and does not change with tensile deformations up to 4.5%. Mechanical deformations imposed on the sensor are totally reversible, due to the elasticity of the PDMS membranes. This remarkable performance upon stretching relies on a wrinkling of GMR layers on top of the PDMS membrane.

Abstract:Miniaturized strain sensors are of value in a variety of areas, including wearable devices and structural health monitoring. Strain gauges based on magnetoresistance effects have previously been developed and offer potential advantages over conventional devices. However, these approaches have so far focused on sensing only the magnitude of the strain. Here, we show that a flexible giant magnetoresistive device can be used to detect the direction of strain in a material. Our trilayer devices, which are fabricated on a flexible substrate, consist of a strain-sensitive ferromagnetic cobalt layer and a strain-insensitive ferromagnetic permalloy (NiFe) layer, separated by a non-magnetic copper layer. We also show that the strain-sensitive and strain-insensitive layers can be made from a single ferromagnetic material by engineering the magnetoelastic properties of cobalt layers. Our integration of spintronics and flexible electronics could lead to the development of a flexible sensor sheet capable of mapping local strain directions.

Abstract:The giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect has seen flourishing development from theory to application in the last three decades since its discovery in 1988. Nowadays, commercial devices based on the GMR effect, such as hard-disk drives, biosensors, magnetic field sensors, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), etc., are available in the market, by virtue of the advances in state-of-the-art thin-film deposition and micro- and nanofabrication techniques. Different types of GMR biosensor arrays with superior sensitivity and robustness are available at a lower cost for a wide variety of biomedical applications. In this paper, we review the recent advances in GMR-based biomedical applications including disease diagnosis, genotyping, food and drug regulation, brain and cardiac mapping, etc. The GMR magnetic multilayer structure, spin valve, and magnetic granular structure, as well as fundamental theories of the GMR effect, are introduced at first. The emerging topic of flexible GMR for wearable biosensing is also included. Different GMR pattern designs, sensor surface functionalization, bioassay strategies, and on-chip accessories for improved GMR performances are reviewed. It is foreseen that combined with the state-of-the-art complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronics, GMR biosensors hold great promise in biomedicine, particularly for point-of-care (POC) disease diagnosis and wearable devices for real-time health monitoring.

Abstract:A flexible self-powered magnetism/pressure dual-mode sensor, which consists of magnetorheological plastomer (MRP), was developed in this work. The working mechanism of the self-powered sensor was based on the displacement reaction of Fe and CuSO4. Different from traditional flexible pressure sensors, it was not only sensitive to a slight pressure (1.3 kPa), but also responsive to a small magnetic field (12 mT). Under an external magnetic field, the micro-scale carbonyl iron (CI) particles in the MRP electrode aggregated into the chain-like and the cluster-like structures, which enhanced the electrochemical activity of ions in the electrolyte of the electrode materials and formed the conductive network. The voltage increased with the magnetic field strength and the sensitivity was 4.2% at a 252 mT magnetic field. To further explore the mechanism of sensor, the microstructure evolution of CI particles inside the electrode materials under different magnetic fields was simulated by particle-level dynamics method. Finally, a smart writing board based on a self-powered magnetism/pressure dual-mode sensor array was developed and it was sensitive to different magnetic fields without an external power supply, which demonstrated a broad potential for mobile electronic device in the non-contact state.

Abstract:Abstract Printed electronics are attractive due to their low-cost and large-area processing features, which have been successfully extended to magnetoresistive sensors and devices. Here, we introduce and characterize a new kind of magnetoresistive paste based on the anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) effect. The paste is a composite of 100-nm-thick permalloy/tantalum flakes embedded in an elastomer matrix, which promotes the formation of appropriately conductive percolation networks. Sensors printed with this paste showed stable magnetoresistive properties upon mechanical bending. The AMR value of this sensor is $$0.34\%$$ 0.34 % in the field of 400 mT. Still, the response is stable and allows to resolve sub-mT field steps. When printed on ultra-thin 2.5- $$\upmu \hbox {m}$$ μ m -thick Mylar foil, the sensor can be completely folded without losing magnetoresistive performance and mechanically withstand $$20\, \upmu {\hbox {m}}$$ 20 μ m bending radius. The developed compliant printed AMR sensor would be attractive to implement on curved and/or dynamic bendable surfaces for on-skin applications and interactive printed electronics.

Abstract:Emerging fields, such as wearable electronics, digital healthcare, the Internet of Things, and humanoid robots, have highlighted the need for flexible devices capable of recording signals on curved surfaces and soft objects. In particular, flexible magnetosensitive devices have garnered significant attention owing to their ability to combine the advantages of flexible electronics and magnetoelectronic devices, such as reshaping capability, conformability, contactless sensing, and navigation capability. Several key challenges must be addressed to develop well‐functional flexible magnetic devices. These include determining how to make magnetic materials flexible and even elastic, understanding how the physical properties of magnetic films change under external strain and stress, and designing and constructing flexible magnetosensitive devices. In recent years, significant progress has been made in addressing these challenges. This study aims to provide a timely and comprehensive overview of the most recent developments in flexible magnetosensitive devices.
