Abstract:Skin‐inspired wearable devices hold great potentials in the next generation of smart portable electronics owing to their intriguing applications in healthcare monitoring, soft robotics, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interfaces. Despite tremendous research efforts dedicated to judiciously tailoring wearable devices in terms of their thickness, portability, flexibility, bendability as well as stretchability, the emerging Internet of Things demand the skin‐interfaced flexible systems to be endowed with additional functionalities with the capability of mimicking skin‐like perception and beyond. This review covers and highlights the latest advances of burgeoning multifunctional wearable electronics, primarily including versatile multimodal sensor systems, self‐healing material‐based devices, and self‐powered flexible sensors. To render the penetration of human‐interactive devices into global markets and households, economical manufacturing techniques are crucial to achieve large‐scale flexible systems with high‐throughput capability. The booming innovations in this research field will push the scientific community forward and benefit human beings in the near future.

Abstract:Electronic skins (e-skins) with multifunctional sensing functions have attracted a lot of attention due to their promising applications in intelligent robotics, human-machine interfaces, and wearable healthcare systems. Here, we report a multifunctional e-skin based on patterned metal films for tactile sensing of pressure and temperature with a broad linear response range by implementing the single sensing mechanism of piezoresistivity, which allows for the easy signal processing and simple device configuration. The sensing pixel features serpentine metal traces and spatially distributed microprotrusions. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the multifunctional tactile sensing mechanism of the e-skin, which exhibits excellent flexibility and wearable conformability. The fabrication approach being compatible with the well-established microfabrication processes has enabled the scalable manufacturing of a large-scale e-skin for spatial tactile sensing in various application scenarios.

Abstract:This work reports a novel triple-functional electronic skin (e-skin) which shows both wonderful thermal–magnetic–mechanical sensing performance and interesting magnetic actuation behavior. The flexible e-skin comprises thermo-sensitive, magnetic, and conductive tri-components, and their sensitive characteristics under 5–70 °C, 0–1200 mT, and 0.1–5.1 MΩ are studied, respectively. Owing to the unique piezoresistive characteristic and magnetorheological effect, the e-skin exhibits a rapid response time (38 ms) to the external stimuli. The assembled e-skin with the triple-layer structure can act as a functional sensor to monitor various human motions, magnetic fields, and environmental temperatures. Based on this e-skin, an intelligent magneto-active gripper is further developed, and it can be used to grasp and transport targets by the actuated force of magnetic field under various working conditions. Importantly, the multi-functional sensing capability endows the gripper with real-time deformation and ambient temperature perception characteristics. As a result, because of the ideal multi-field coupling sensing and magnetic active features, this e-skin shows a wide prospect in wearable electronics, man–machine interactions, and intelligent transport systems.

Abstract:The flexible wearable sensors with high sensitivity and stability provide wide potential in artificial intelligence and human-machine interaction. However, dual-modal sensor with contact and non-contact working mode based on a facile and cost-effective methodology which can recognize external stimulus forms remains a challenge. Especially, magnetic non-contact sensing performance has gained increasing attention in smart wearable device. This work reports a flexible and magnetic sensor based on a sandwich structure film (SSF) which can detect both tension and bending stimuli by supplementing opposite electric signal feedbacks. Notably, the & UDelta;R/R0 of SSF sensor reaches 44.1% at 5% tensile strain and it presents excellent stability even after 10,000 cycles. Moreover, the & UDelta;R/R0 of SSF sensor maintains at-17.2% under 2 mm bending displacement. Additionally, SSF sensor can be employed as electronic skin to perceive the human joint motion in real-time. Furthermore, the direction and density of magnetic field applied to SSF sensor can be clearly discriminated, thus a non-contact magnetic keyboard has been designed and developed. As a result, the facile manufacturing processes and outstanding multifunctional sensing characteristics endow SSF sensor with high implementation potential in the next-generation intelligent electronic equipment or systems.

Abstract:The emerging market of wearable devices for tracking and positioning requires the development of highly flexible magnetic sensors. Due to the stable magnetoresistance ratio and simple fabrication process, sensors based on the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect have been proposed as promising candidates. However, the stability of AMR sensors under different bending situations has rarely been investigated. In this work, we proposed a flexible AMR magnetic sensor deposited on an ultra-thin Kapton substrate, which exhibits excellent anti-fatigue behavior at different bending curvatures ranging from 1/3 to 1/10 mm-1. Experimental results show that the sensitivity of our proposed flexible AMR sensor remains as high as 0.25 Oe-1 after being bent 500 times, showing promising potential for application in wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Electronic skin, a class of wearable electronic sensors that mimic the functionalities of human skin, has made remarkable success in applications including health monitoring, human-machine interaction and electronic-biological interfaces. While electronic skin continues to achieve higher sensitivity and faster response, its ultimate performance is fundamen-tally limited by the nature of low-frequency AC currents. Herein, highly sensitive skin-like wearable optical sensors are demonstrated by embedding glass micro/nanofibers (MNFs) in thin layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Enabled by the transition from guided modes into radiation modes of the waveguiding MNFs upon external stimuli, the skin-like opti-cal sensors show ultrahigh sensitivity (1870 kPa-1), low detection limit (7 mPa) and fast response (10 μs) for pressure sensing, significantly exceeding the performance metrics of state-of-the-art electronic skins. Electromagnetic interference (EMI)-free detection of high-frequency vibrations, wrist pulse and human voice are realized. Moreover, a five-sensor op-tical data glove and a 2×2-MNF tactile sensor are demonstrated. These initial results pave the way toward a new cate-gory of optical devices ranging from ultrasensitive wearable sensors to optical skins.

Relatively low sensitivity and severe mutual interferences of multiple stimuli detection have limited the applications of the existing e-skins. To address these challenges, inspired by the physical texture of the natural fingerprint, a novel fully elastomeric e-skin is developed herein for highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing. A region-partition strategy is utilized to construct the multifunctional fingerprint-shaped sensing elements, where strain isolation structure of indurated film patterns are further embedded to enhance the sensitivity and effectively reduce mutual interferences between the differentiated units. The fully elastomeric graphene/silver/silicone rubber nanocomposites are synthesized with tunable properties including conductivity and sensitivity to satisfy the requirements of highly sensitive pressure and temperature sensing as well as stretchable electrodes. Remarkable progress in sensitivities for both pressure and temperature, up to 5.53 kPa(-1) in a wide range of 0.5-120 kPa and 0.42% degrees C-1 in 25-60 degrees C, respectively, are achieved with the inappreciable mutual interferences. Further studies demonstrate the great potential of the proposed e-skin in the next-generation of wearable electronics for human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Emerging fields, such as wearable electronics, digital healthcare, the Internet of Things, and humanoid robots, have highlighted the need for flexible devices capable of recording signals on curved surfaces and soft objects. In particular, flexible magnetosensitive devices have garnered significant attention owing to their ability to combine the advantages of flexible electronics and magnetoelectronic devices, such as reshaping capability, conformability, contactless sensing, and navigation capability. Several key challenges must be addressed to develop well‐functional flexible magnetic devices. These include determining how to make magnetic materials flexible and even elastic, understanding how the physical properties of magnetic films change under external strain and stress, and designing and constructing flexible magnetosensitive devices. In recent years, significant progress has been made in addressing these challenges. This study aims to provide a timely and comprehensive overview of the most recent developments in flexible magnetosensitive devices. This includes discussions on the fabrications and mechanical regulations of flexible magnetic materials, the principles and performances of flexible magnetic sensors, and their applications for wearable electronics. Abstract:The development of flexible electronic skins with high performance and multifunctional sensing capabilities is of great significance for applications ranging from healthcare monitoring to artificial intelligence. To mimic and surpass the high-gauge-factor sensing properties of human skin, structure design and appropriate material selection of sensors are both essentially required. Here, we present an efficient, low-cost fabrication strategy to construct an ultra-highly sensitive, flexible pressure sensor by embedding the aligned nickel-coated carbon fibers (NICFs) in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. Our design substantially contributes to ultrahigh sensitivity through the parallel circuit formed by aligned NICFs as well as surface spinosum microstructure molded by sandpaper. As a result, the sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity (15 525 kPa-1), a fast response time (30 ms), and good stability over 3000 loading-unloading cycles. Furthermore, these superior sensing properties trigger applications in water quality and wave monitoring in conjunction with mechanical flexibility and robustness. As a precedent for adjusting the sensitivities of the sensor, the NICFs/PDMS sensor provides a promising method for multiscenario healthcare monitoring, multiscale pressure spatial distribution, and human-machine interfacing.

Abstract:Ever-evolving advances in flexible magnetic sensors are promising to fuel technological developments in the fields of touchless human–machine interaction, implantable medical diagnosis, and magnetoreception for artificial intelligence. However, the realization of highly flexible and extremely sensitive magnetic sensors remains a challenge. Here, we report a cost-effective, flexible, and ultra-sensitive heterostructural magnetoelectric (ME) sensor consisting of piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) thick films and Metglas foils. The flexible sensor exhibits a strong ME coefficient of 19.3 V cm−1 Oe−1 at low frequencies and 280.5 V cm−1 Oe−1 at resonance due to the exceptionally high piezoelectric coefficient d33 ∼ 72 pC N−1 of the constituent PZT thick films. The flexible ME sensor possesses not only ultrahigh sensitivities of 200 nT at low frequencies and 200 pT at resonance but also shows an excellent mechanical endurance. Through 5000 bending cycles (radii of ∼1 cm), the sensors showed no fatigue-induced performance degradation. This ultrasensitive flexible sensor provides a platform capable of sensing and responding to external magnetic fields and will find applications in soft robotics, wearable healthcare monitoring, and consumer electronics.

Abstract:Skin-integrated electronics that directly interact with machines are transforming our ways of life toward the emerging trend of the metaverse. Consequently, developing a wearable and skin-conformal interface that simultaneously features waterproofness, low cost, and low power consumption for human–machine interaction remains highly desired. Herein, a stretchable, inexpensive, and waterproof magnetoelastic sensor array has been developed as a secondary skin for self-powered human–machine interaction. The magnetoelastic sensor array utilizes the giant magnetoelastic effect in a soft system, which converts mechanical pressure to magnetic field variation and, when coupled with the magnetic induction, can generate electricity. In such a way, our magnetoelastic sensor array comprises the giant magnetomechanical coupling layer made up of nanomagnets and a porous silicone rubber matrix, and the magnetic induction layer, which are coils patterned by liquid metal. With programmable functionalities, the soft magnetoelastic sensor array can supply different commands by producing bespoke electric signals from human finger touch with an optimal signal-to-noise ratio of 34 dB and a rapid response time of 0.2s. To pursue a practical application, the soft magnetoelastic sensor array can wirelessly turn on and off a household lamp and control a music speaker via Bluetooth continuously in real time, even with contact with high-humidity environments such as heavy perspiration. With a collection of compelling features, the soft magnetoelastic sensor array puts forth a unique and savvy avenue of self-powered bioelectronic technology that practically enables a wider variety of applications for wearable human–machine interaction.

Abstract:Abstract The current establishment of stretchable electronics to form a seamless link between soft or even living materials and the digital world is at the forefront of multidisciplinary research efforts, bridging physics, engineering and materials science. Magnetic functionalities can provide a sense of displacement, orientation or proximity to this novel formulation of electronics. This work reviews the recent development of stretchable magnetic field sensorics relying on the combination of metallic thin films revealing a giant magnetoresistance effect with elastomeric materials. Stretchability of the magnetic nanomembranes is achieved by specific morphologic features (e.g. wrinkles or microcracks), which accommodate the applied tensile deformation while maintaining the electrical and magnetic integrity of the sensor device. The entire development, from the demonstration of the world’s first elastically stretchable magnetic sensor to the realization of a technology platform for robust, ready-to-use elastic magnetosensorics is described. Soft giant magnetoresistive elements exhibiting the same sensing performance as on conventional rigid supports, but with fully strain invariant properties up to 270% stretching have been demonstrated. With their unique mechanical properties, these sensor elements readily conform to ubiquitous objects of arbitrary shapes including the human skin. Stretchable magnetoelectronic sensors can equip soft and epidermal electronic systems with navigation, orientation, motion tracking and touchless control capabilities. A variety of novel technologies, like electronic skins, smart textiles, soft robotics and actuators, active medical implants and soft consumer electronics will benefit from these new magnetic functionalities.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetic sensors are widely used in our daily life for assessing the position and orientation of objects. Recently, the magnetic sensing modality has been introduced to electronic skins (e-skins), enabling remote perception of moving objects. However, the integration density of magnetic sensors is limited and the vector properties of the magnetic field cannot be fully explored since the sensors can only perceive field components in one or two dimensions. Here, we report an approach to fabricate high-density integrated active matrix magnetic sensor with three-dimensional (3D) magnetic vector field sensing capability. The 3D magnetic sensor is composed of an array of self-assembled micro-origami cubic architectures with biased anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensors manufactured in a wafer-scale process. Integrating the 3D magnetic sensors into an e-skin with embedded magnetic hairs enables real-time multidirectional tactile perception. We demonstrate a versatile approach for the fabrication of active matrix integrated 3D sensor arrays using micro-origami and pave the way for new electronic devices relying on the autonomous rearrangement of functional elements in space.

Abstract:A self‐powered and multifunctional e‐skin system consisting of the whisker‐like magnetized micro‐cilia array (MMCA) and underlying flexible coils is presented. With customized built‐in magnetic moments, the adaptive bending of the flexible MMCA can accordingly provide an electromagnetic response to reflect the external stimuli. The e‐skin exhibits promising potential for micro‐scaled 3D morphology reconstructions, healthcare pressure monitoring, and high‐capacity human‐machine interactions. Electronic skin (e‐skin), which mimics the tactile perception as human skin, is of interest to advance robotics, prosthetics, and human‐machine interactions (HMI). However, the construction of artificial e‐skin with the simulated function of morphology recognition and stimuli response remains challenging. Here, the design of a multifunctional and self‐powered e‐skin system based on the whisker‐like magnetized micro‐cilia array (MMCA) and the underneath flexible coils is reported. Owing to the excellent flexibility of the MMCA, the adaptive micro‐cilia bending can be produced according to the tactile inputs or surface morphologies. With built‐in magnetic moments, the MMCA deformation thus alters the magnetic flux distribution, which induces an electromotive force (voltage) in the coils for pressure detection and quantitative recognition of micro‐scaled 3D morphologies. It is shown that using the distinct voltage intensities and waveforms, the optimized e‐skin can be applied for real‐time healthcare monitoring, Braille identification, and reconstruction of relief information. By customizing the magnetic moment alignments in MMCA, one e‐skin device can further produce distinguishable signals to build up multi‐commands for efficient HMI, e.g., underwater Morse code communication. Along with temperature tolerance and environmental immunity, the e‐skin exhibits the potential to serve as an effective channel for intelligent 3D topology recognition and high‐capacity communications.

Abstract:The development of flexible tactile sensors is an emerging field due to their wide applications ranging from human-robot interactions to wearable electronics. This paper proposes a flexible tactile sensor based on the magnetic field for detecting both forces and positions, which exhibited a linear relationship. The direct ink writing technology was used to fabricate magnetic elastomers for the quick test of variable patterns. The introduced folding magnetization allows for a higher magnetic flux density in the designated position which made it possible to get rid of magnets. A pattern was designed and printed. The linear relationship was found to be linear (R-2 > 0.98) between the magnetic field signal and the magnitude and position of the load force. Moreover, the untethered sensor was proven to work well in the sealed box, which is expected to serve as the electrical skin of robots or the tactile sensor in extreme environments. Abstract:Abstract Electronic skin (E‐skin) is a device that mimics the functions of human skin and is attracting more and more attention as a novel platform for human–machine interaction, health diagnostics, therapeutics, robotics, prosthesis, and monitoring. Here, a flexible ferroelectric field‐effect transistor (FeFET) is developed as a multifunctional sensor prototype for electronic skin. Ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene) and amorphous tungsten‐doped indium oxide are utilized to construct the FeFET. The device possesses three‐in‐one sensing performance. It can monitor external stress with a linear sensitivity of 4.6 nA kPa −1 in broad pressure range between 50 Pa and 150 kPa and detect temperature change between 0 and 70 °C. Electrostatic interaction further endows the device with proximity sensing function to perceive the approach of a charged object. The device is further developed for detection of a human's physiological signals, such as pulsation and respiration, and finger's action. It shows good bending endurance which maintains its transfer characteristic after 1000 cycles of bending operation. Moreover, the device's responses to both temperature change and charged objects are investigated when it is under bending condition with radius of curvature down to 1.09 mm. This multifunctional sensor prototype is expected to contribute to the next‐generation E‐skin.

Abstract:This work reports a three-dimensional (3D) structured multifunctional sensor by connecting a magnetowhisker with a superflexible patterned skin film. Composed of percolation networks of silver nanowires, the patterned skin film is integrated via a simple template manufacturing method without increasing the complexity and sacrificing the flexibility. The as-prepared 3D structured sensor can realize the multimodal detection of out-of-plane tactile stimuli and details of noncontact environmental obstacles in multiple directions. Here, the sensor's perception behaviors on compression, pulling, magnetic field, sound waves, airflow, water level, water flow, and backwash are presented. Furthermore, the 3D structured sensor obtains outstanding mechanical robustness and stability for 8000 cycles, excellent sensitivity (12 800% when the applied pulling displacement was 3.5 mm; 152% T-1 when the magnetic flux density variation was 40.6 mT), ultrahigh response time, and ultrahigh recovery time (similar to 5 ms), which may meet the industrial sensing requirement for artificial tactile electronics. Facile manufacturing processes and outstanding multimodal sensing characteristics make the 3D structured sensor to possess great potential to be implemented in the next-generation intelligent bionic equipment or systems.

Abstract:Multimodal integrated flexible electronic skin offers exceptional processing capability and versatility in various application scenarios. Researchers are devoting to developing nanomaterials or nano-devices with multidisciplinary functions. Herein, a trinary-mode integrated flexible electronic skin (E-Skin) was designed for physiological perception and contactless kinematics pattern recognition, which serves as real-time health monitor, electrode patch and contactless sensor. The composite film of liquid metal particles and thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers () was prepared by a combination of electrostatic spinning, electrostatic spraying, and knife coating, which can be stretched up to 404.7 % at stress of 1Mpa. The film was endowed three functional modes through different forms of encapsulation, which allows for (1) detecting human arthrosis movements, muscle stretching, and inspiration, (2) achieving a real-time capture of Electrocardiogram (ECG) and surface electromyography (sEMG), and a Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) system for game control based on sEMG signals was also developed, (3) a contactless sensor combining with a machine learning model which realizes the recognition of human motion patterns with a receiver operating characteristic curve and area under curve score (ROC-AUC-score) of 0.99. The three models of this E-Skin highlight the significant potential for industrialization in various fields, such as HMI, physiological perception, virtual reality, and motion analysis.
