Abstract:An experiment was conducted to study the seed germination patterns of a rare oil-bearing tree species of Horsfieldia pandurifolia in Xishuangbanna of Yunnan Province under artificial and natural conditions. Results showed that the germination percentage of the fresh mature seeds in sand reached more than 96% and the survival percentage up to 100% when the seedlings were transplanted from sand to soil;while the germination percentage of the fresh mature seeds in soil ranged from 80.00% to 86.27%,and that of fruitages in soil was only between 9.09% and 33.33%.Under natural conditions, the germination percentage of seeds covered with soil was within 55% and 95%,which was obviously higher than those without covering with soil (20%-65%).For 8-month-old seedlings of 11 families, the average height and variation coefficient were 24.70-47.43 cm and 21.95%-41.26% respectively, and the average stem-base diameter and variation coefficient were 7.16-11.08 mm and 16.62%-35.12% respectively.
