Abstract:Microcystins are a class of toxins that are mainly produced by cyanobacteria and among them, microcystin-leucine arginine (microcystin-LR) is one of the most toxic and harmful of the fresh water toxins causing many accidents and threats to human health. The detection of microcystin-LR in drinking water and environmental water samples is therefore crucial. To date, methods such as high performance liquid chromatography, protein phosphatase inhibition assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Raman spectroscopy have been employed to monitor microcystin-LR levels. Although these techniques are precise and sensitive, they require expensive instrumentation, well-trained personnel and involve time-consuming processes meaning that their application is generally limited to well-resourced and centralized laboratory facilities. Among the emerging microcystin-LR detection methods, biosensors have received great attention because of their remarkable sensitivity, selectivity, and simplicity. In this review, we will discuss the current state-of-the-art of microcystin-LR biosensing platforms, evaluate the advantages and limitations of typical transduction technologies to identify the most efficient detection system for the potentially harmful cyanobacteria.Microcystin–LR is a toxin produced by cyanobacteria and is the most toxic of the microcystins. This review summarized recent progresses, prevailing techniques, applied formats, and future trends of microcystin-LR monitoring biosensors.

Abstract:Increased cyanobacterial blooms, a source of cyanotoxins are linked with climate change and eutrophication in aquatic bodies, a major concern worldwide. Microcystins are potently hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic as well as carcinogenic. Thus microcystins are threat to tourism, agriculture and animal's health. However, there is a still lacuna in the knowledge of regulation of microcystins production. Presence of toxic and non-toxic cyanobacterial strains together and occurrence of various microcystin variants in aquatic bodies compounded the problem. Although several analytical techniques for microcystin detection such as bioassay, ELISA, HPLC and LC-MS etc. have been already prevalent, the development of biosensors offered rapid and accurate detection, high reproducibility and portability. Sequencing of Microcystis spp., opened the new vistas towards the development of biosensor at molecular and genetic level. This review incorporates the current trends in the development of biosensors for microcystin detection in the light of state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract:Lake and reservoir' s eutrophication and its produced microcystins (MCs) have enormous threats to ecological environment and human health. Because the conventional water pollution control techniques have definite limitations, it' s quite urgent to develop new technique to remove the MCs from water environment. MCs can be effectively degraded by specific microbes, and its intermediate and terminal products are non-toxic or low-toxic. This paper summarized the MCs-degrading microbial strains, biodegradation processes, mechanisms, and affecting factors, degraded products and their structural characteristics, and the applications of MCs-degrading microbial strains in water environment restoration. The further research directions were also proposed. It was hoped that this review could provide technical ideas for restoring MCs-polluted lakes and reservoirs and ensuring drinking water safety in China.

Abstract:With the development of eutrophication in freshwater lakes in the past decades, harmful cyanobacteria blooms (CyanoHABs) have become more frequent and with worse extends around the world. Many of these CyanoHABs produce cyanotoxins, often microcystins (MCs), and threaten human health and the environments, MCs are chemically stable, however they can be effectively degraded through microbial process, which has a great potential in applications for environment-friendly water treatments and environmental protection. In this review, we summarized the chemical structure, toxicity and degradation of microcystins, with the emphasis on microbial decomposition processes of microcystins and their potential application in water treatment and environmental protection.

Abstract:The frequent occurs of cyanobacterial blooms induced by eutrophication can bring about water pollution caused by various derivate pollutants, lead to great ecological disasters in severe cases and consequently threaten human health. Microcystins (MC) have become common potential hazardous pollutant in aquatic environments for their great toxicity, widespread distribution and structural stability. These toxin, producing mainly by Microcystis, are family of monocyclic heptapeptides with many different isomerides. On the basis of the recent development of pollution status of microcystins and their ecotoxicological studies on aquatic organisms, we introduce the physicochemical properties and the fate of microcystins, their pollution in natural waters, reservoir water and potable water in China and their accumulation in some aquatic products, summarize the molecular toxicity mechanisms and their ecotoxicological effects on common aquatic plants and fishes which are the important components of aquatic ecosystem. Finally, the main research trend in this area are discussed.

Abstract:The production of toxic microcystins by cyanobacteria is an important safety issue in terms of ecological food chains and drinking water supplies. Studies were carried out to demonstrate the applicability of solid phase adsorption toxin tracking (SPATT) to the monitoring of microcystins in fresh water. Work focused on the distribution of the intra- and extra-cellular toxins MC-LR and [Dha(7)] MC-LR produced by Microcystis aeruginosa (FACHB 905). The dynamic adsorption and desorption behavior of both toxins on aromatic resins HP20 and SP700 was examined, and the use of SPATT bags for monitoring microcystins in cyanobacterial cultures is discussed. It was shown that intracellular MC-LR and [Dha(7)] MC-LR are released continuously during batch incubation. The adsorption capacity of the SP700 resin was higher than that of the HP20 resin, while the opposite was true for desorption efficiency. The highest desorption efficiency of HP20 was 91.5±4.6% and 89.0±7.1% for MC-LR and [Dha(7)] MC-LR, respectively; accordingly, that of SP700 was 78.1±4.1% and 72.3±2.1%, respectively. Taking both adsorption and desorption behavior into consideration, HP20 is recommended as an adsorbent for SPATT monitoring of microcystins in freshwater bodies.

Abstract:Pollution and control of microcystins released during the toxic bloom was reviewed in the present paper. As a risk factor in safety assessment, microcystins aroused broad attention. It was a topic of general interest that how to control microcystins reproduction and how to enhance the degradation of microcystins in the water treatment procedure. Based on the state of China, it was considered that a combined method of biological, physical and chemical treatment should be the best way to control microcystins pollution in drinking water.

Abstract:Abstract Freshwater scarcity and water pollution pose significant global challenges, greatly impacting human well‐being. To address these issues, water quality monitoring plays a crucial role as a preventive measure in various water security initiatives worldwide. However, many traditional testing methods suffer from drawbacks such as low accuracy, limited mobility, and high operational costs. Fortunately, the emergence of microfluidic technology offers a promising avenue for the development of highly sensitive, portable, and cost‐effective water quality monitoring devices. In this study, a comprehensive review of recent advancements in microfluidic technology for water quality monitoring, water desalination, and water purification is provided. The potential for future developments in this field is highlighted, empowering researchers to create innovative water monitoring kits and optimize existing techniques. By harnessing the capabilities of microfluidics, the accuracy, portability, and affordability of water quality monitoring can be enhanced, ultimately addressing the global water challenges we face.

Abstract:Microcystins are secondary metabolites produced by some cyanobacteria, a class of cyclic heptapeptide toxins that are stable in the environment. Microcystins can create a variety of adverse health effects in humans, animals, and plants through contaminated water. Effective methods to degrade them are required. Microorganisms are considered to be a promising method to degrade microcystins due to their high efficiency, low cost, and environmental friendliness. This review focuses on perspectives on the frontiers of microcystin biodegradation. It has been reported that bacteria and fungi play an important contribution to degradation. Analysis of the biodegradation mechanism and pathway is an important part of the research. Microcystin biodegradation has been extensively studied in the existing research. This review provides an overview of (1) pollution assessment strategies and hazards of microcystins in water bodies and (2) the important contributions of various bacteria and fungi in the biodegradation of microcystins and their degradation mechanisms, including mlr gene-induced (gene cluster expressing microcystinase) degradation. The application of biodegradable technology still needs development. Further, a robust regulatory oversight is required to monitor and minimize MC contamination. This review aims to provide more references regarding the detection and removal of microcystins in aqueous environments and to promote the application of biodegradation techniques for the purification of microcystin-contaminated water.

Abstract:Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) produce microcystins (MCs) which are associated with animal and human hepatotoxicity. Over 270 variants of MC exist. MCs have been continually studied due of their toxic consequences. Monitoring water quality to assess the presence of MCs is of utmost importance although it is often difficult because CyanoHABs may generate multiple MC variants, and their low concentration in water. To effectively manage and control these toxins and prevent their health risks, sensitive, fast, and reliable methods capable of detecting MCs are required. This paper aims to review the three main analytical methods used to detect MCs ranging from biological (mouse bioassay), biochemical (protein phosphatase inhibition assay and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay), and chemical (high performance liquid chromatography, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, high performance capillary electrophoresis, and gas chromatography), as well as the newly emerging biosensor methods. In addition, the current state of these methods regarding their novel development and usage, as well as merits and limitations are presented. Finally, this paper also provides recommendations and future research directions towards method application and improvement.
