Abstract:Pollution and control of microcystins released during the toxic bloom was reviewed in the present paper. As a risk factor in safety assessment, microcystins aroused broad attention. It was a topic of general interest that how to control microcystins reproduction and how to enhance the degradation of microcystins in the water treatment procedure. Based on the state of China, it was considered that a combined method of biological, physical and chemical treatment should be the best way to control microcystins pollution in drinking water.

Abstract:Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have attracted great attention around the world due to the numerous negative effects such as algal organic matters and cyanobacterial toxins in drinking water treatments. As an economic and environmentally friendly technology, microorganisms have been widely used for pollution control and remediation, especially in the inhibition/biodegradation of the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in eutrophic water; moreover, some certain anticyanobacterial microorganisms can degrade microcystins at the same time. Therefore, this review aims to provide information regarding the current status of M. aeruginosa inhibition/biodegradation microorganisms and the acute toxicities of anticyanobacterial substances secreted by microorganisms. Based on the available literature, the anticyanobacterial modes and mechanisms, as well as the in situ application of anticyanobacterial microorganisms are elucidated in this review. This review aims to enhance understanding the anticyanobacterial microorganisms and provides a rational approach towards the future applications.

Abstract:Microcystins are a group of heptapeptide hepatotoxins produced by a variety of algae and are frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, posing a global threat to ecological stability and human health. However, it is difficult to eliminate them completely and innocuously from water by conventional water treatment processes. This study comprehensively evaluated a total of 821 original articles retrieved from the Web of Science (1991-2020) about the removal of microcystins using bibliometric and content analysis to provide a qualitative and quantitative research landscape and a global view of research hotspots and future research directions. Furthermore, the primary and promising treatment technologies for microcystin pollution were also summarized and discussed. The results indicated an urgent practical demand to remediate microcystin pollution according to the increasing number of publications since 2005. China had the highest number of publications, whereas the United States was the core country in the international collaboration network. The Chinese Academy of Sciences and University of Cincinnati showed their leading positions considering article amounts and academic cooperation. Dionysiou DD contributed the most articles, and Carmichael WW had the highest number of co-citations. Three treatment technologies, including biodegradation, chemical oxidation and adsorption, were the major strategies to remediate the pollution of microcystins in water. In addition, the toxicity of toxins/their metabolites, degradation kinetics, and elimination mechanism were also important research contents. Bacterial degradation, photocatalytic degradation, and multiple-technologies approach have been identified with great potential and should be given more attention in future studies. This work summarizes the current research status on microcystin management, provides a valuable reference for researchers to identify potential opportunities for collaboration in related fields, and guides future research directions to inter-disciplinary and multi-perspective approaches.

Abstract:Microcystins (MCs), which is the most popular algae toxins generated by the explosive propagation of Cyanobacteria in the eutrophic fresh water, have caused worldwide concerns for their great toxicity, widespread dis￣tribution and structural stability. This review summarized the recent development of pollution status of MCs and their representative toxicity and toxic mechanism. In addition, the suggestions were put forward for present studies, in order to provide the basis for effectively reducing the potential security risks and studying deeply the ecotoxico￣logical effects of microcystins.

Abstract:Lake and reservoir' s eutrophication and its produced microcystins (MCs) have enormous threats to ecological environment and human health. Because the conventional water pollution control techniques have definite limitations, it' s quite urgent to develop new technique to remove the MCs from water environment. MCs can be effectively degraded by specific microbes, and its intermediate and terminal products are non-toxic or low-toxic. This paper summarized the MCs-degrading microbial strains, biodegradation processes, mechanisms, and affecting factors, degraded products and their structural characteristics, and the applications of MCs-degrading microbial strains in water environment restoration. The further research directions were also proposed. It was hoped that this review could provide technical ideas for restoring MCs-polluted lakes and reservoirs and ensuring drinking water safety in China.

Abstract:With the development of eutrophication in freshwater lakes in the past decades, harmful cyanobacteria blooms (CyanoHABs) have become more frequent and with worse extends around the world. Many of these CyanoHABs produce cyanotoxins, often microcystins (MCs), and threaten human health and the environments, MCs are chemically stable, however they can be effectively degraded through microbial process, which has a great potential in applications for environment-friendly water treatments and environmental protection. In this review, we summarized the chemical structure, toxicity and degradation of microcystins, with the emphasis on microbial decomposition processes of microcystins and their potential application in water treatment and environmental protection.

Abstract:Increasing attention has been attached to the pollution of algal toxins in recent years.Microcystins(MCYST),as a major model of the toxins reported,is toxic cylic heptapeptide,which may be produced by some strains of various blue-green algae.MCYST is stable in characters and fairly resistant to degradation.MCYST has been showed to be extremely potent hepa-totoxins and been viewed as a promoter of liver tumor.The general water treatment process cannot remove MCYST efficiently.Some researches show that ozone,chlorine and its oxidants,photochemical oxidization,activated carbon and biological method are effective for removing MCYST.

Abstract:The cyanobacteria blooms caused by eutrophication has received widespread attention in recent years,which endanger the environment,destroy ecological environment and affect the normal life of human beings.The control of cya-nobacterial blooms is one of the important issues to be solved at present.The chemical method of adding algaecide is very effective for timely control of cyanobacteria blooms.However,few studies have comprehensively summarized the practical application of common algaecides despite the attention given to their development.Some algaecides which have received much attention in recent years for the typical species of cyanobacteria were focused on.For Microcystis aeruginosa,a typi-cal cyanobacteria,the algicidal effect,the working mechanism,the effect on the microcystin(MC),and the practical ap-plications of these algaecides were reviewed.It was hoped to provide guidance for the selection of algaecides.Moreover,the potential risks of excessive background concentrations of allelopathic substances and long-term use of non-allelopathic substances have also been noted.Considering the algicidal effect and safety,the characteristics of the ecologi-cally friendly algaecide were summarized.Additionally,strategies such as slow release and combined use were proposed to address current algaecide limitations.

Abstract:Microcystins are secondary metabolites produced by some cyanobacteria, a class of cyclic heptapeptide toxins that are stable in the environment. Microcystins can create a variety of adverse health effects in humans, animals, and plants through contaminated water. Effective methods to degrade them are required. Microorganisms are considered to be a promising method to degrade microcystins due to their high efficiency, low cost, and environmental friendliness. This review focuses on perspectives on the frontiers of microcystin biodegradation. It has been reported that bacteria and fungi play an important contribution to degradation. Analysis of the biodegradation mechanism and pathway is an important part of the research. Microcystin biodegradation has been extensively studied in the existing research. This review provides an overview of (1) pollution assessment strategies and hazards of microcystins in water bodies and (2) the important contributions of various bacteria and fungi in the biodegradation of microcystins and their degradation mechanisms, including mlr gene-induced (gene cluster expressing microcystinase) degradation. The application of biodegradable technology still needs development. Further, a robust regulatory oversight is required to monitor and minimize MC contamination. This review aims to provide more references regarding the detection and removal of microcystins in aqueous environments and to promote the application of biodegradation techniques for the purification of microcystin-contaminated water.

Abstract:With increasing discharge of wastewater containing nitrogen and phosphorus into rivers and lakes, harmful cyanobacterial blooms have become more frequent worldwide. The main harm of cyanobacterial blooms is producing and releasing a great amount of algal toxins mainly containing microcystins (MCs). Since MCs are extremely harmful to plants and animals and difficult to be removed efficiently by the traditional processing methods, how to control harmful cyanobacterial blooms and remove MCs have become an unsolved problem in the field of environmental science all over the world. This paper summarized the structure and toxicity of MCs, the MCs-biodegrading bacterial strains, the enzymes, the genes, and the biodegradation pathway and molecular mechanism of MCs. The further research subjects were also proposed. It was hoped that this review could provide a reference for restoring MCs-polluted lakes and reservoirs and ensuring drinking water safety.

Abstract:Toxic effect and mechanism of Microcystin(MC) on fish had became a hotspot in environment toxicology.This review included the effects of fish exposed to MC;the relationship between structure and toxic effect;the routs that MC would be absorbed by fish;two kinds of potential mechanisms that MC induced toxic effect on fish.Enormous toxic researched on MC have been done to indicate that intestinal tract might be the most potential rout that MC was absorbed by fish;MC induced oxidative stress on fish,surplus reactive oxygen species(ROS),as a second messenger,and/or MC could inhibited protein phosphatases 1 and 2A which have important role of cell signaling.Special anti-oxidation and endogenesis anti-oxidation were involved by novel research aspects of mechanism on oxidative stress.

Abstract:Addressing the threat of harmful cyanobacterial blooms (CyanoHABs) and their associated microcystins (MCs) is crucial for global drinking water safety. In this review, we comprehensively analyze and compares the physical, chemical, and biological methods and genetic engineering for MCs degradation in aquatic environments. Physical methods, such as UV treatments and photocatalytic reactions, have a high efficiency in breaking down MCs, with the potential for further enhancement in performance and reduction of hazardous byproducts. Chemical treatments using chlorine dioxide and potassium permanganate can reduce MC levels but require careful dosage management to avoid toxic by-products and protect aquatic ecosystems. Biological methods, including microbial degradation and phytoremediation techniques, show promise for the biodegradation of MCs, offering reduced environmental impact and increased sustainability. Genetic engineering, such as immobilization of microcystinase A (MlrA) in Escherichia coli and its expression in Synechocystis sp., has proven effective in decomposing MCs such as MC-LR. However, challenges related to specific environmental conditions such as temperature variations, pH levels, presence of other contaminants, nutrient availability, oxygen levels, and light exposure, as well as scalability of biological systems, necessitate further exploration. We provide a comprehensive evaluation of MCs degradation techniques, delving into their practicality, assessing the environmental impacts, and scrutinizing their efficiency to offer crucial insights into the multifaceted nature of these methods in various environmental contexts. The integration of various methodologies to enhance degradation efficiency is vital in the field of water safety, underscoring the need for ongoing innovation.
