Abstract:The Internet finance brings much convenience to human’s life and consumption, meanwhile, it is also the “catalyst” which intensifies “blind consumption”, enhances “luxury consumption”, boosters “sensual consumption”, and breeds “boastful consumption”. Analyzing the China’s consumption alienation issue under the background of Internet finance is an important subject with characteristics of the times. This paper takes the characteristics of Chinese people’s consumption behaviors under the background of Internet finance as object, reviews and examines China’s current consumption alienation issue, calls for the return from “materialized people” to “free people”, and the concept transformation from “consumption comes first” to “green consumption”, and the step-by-step progress from “materialism” to “post-materialism”. Moreover, it actively explores ways of abandoning the consumption alienation, to provide theoretical reference for building harmonious consumption culture with Chinese characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the data of Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP) and 117 cities in 2007 and 2013, this paper analyzed the effect of industrial structure upgrading on household consumption structure by using the ordinary least square method and quantile regression method. The following conclusions were drawn. Firstly, the upgrading of industrial structure can significantly promote the upgrading of household consumption structure. Secondly, compared with the low-level consumption structure households, the industrial structure upgrading has a stronger impact on households with high-level consumption structure. With the increase of quantile level, the influence of industrial structure upgrading on the upgrading of residents' consumption structure can gradually increase. Therefore, the government should actively promote the supply-side reform and the upgrading of industrial structure, which would be conducive to the upgrading of consumption structure.

Abstract:In the process of deepening the supply-side reform, China’s economic operation has shown a good momentum of steady development, and consumption has begun to play a prominent role in promoting economic growth. However, there are still many different opinions on whether it is “consumption upgrade” or “consumption downgrade”. Based on the eight types of consumption data of urban residents in China from 1993 to 2016, this paper uses the time-series global principal component analysis method and the ELES model to empirically analyze the longitudinal time series data from the three levels of consumption level, consumption structure and consumer satisfaction. The results show that the consumption level of urban residents is increasing steadily, the consumption structure is continuously optimized, and consumer satisfaction is significantly improved. At this stage, China is indeed in a period of consumption upgrading, rather than the consumption reduction proposed by the private sector. Therefore, under the background of supply-side struc tural reform, measures such as improving the income distribution system, imp roving the quality of labor supply, and developing scientific and medical equipment are the fundamental ways to accelerate the upgrading of China’s consumption.
A Study of Setting up the Long- term Mechanism to Raise Residents' Consumption Capacity

Abstract:At the present stage the residents' consumption capacity is characterized as enormous potential,uneven distribution and weak consumption ability of middle class families. The main factors lie in the fact that the residents' consumption capacity is restricted by the slow growth of disposable income,the widening income gap between the urban and rural areas,weak income mobility,unreasonable structure of residents' income and imperfect social security system. In order to expand consumption demand and boost sustainable development of national economy,the long- term mechanism concerning enhancing residents' consumption capacity must be set up. It is concluded that increasing residents' income,narrowing income gap,boosting income mobility,optimizing income constitution and improving social security system can drive people 's consumption capacity in the long- term.

Abstract:Consumption upgrading reflects people’s pursuit of a better life and is an important engine of high-quality economic development. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2021, this study analyses the impact and mechanism of the digital economy and financial development on residents’ consumption upgrading from a macro perspective. The findings demonstrate that the digital economy, financial development, and their synergistic effect significantly promote residents’ consumption upgrading, which improves the overall level of residents’ consumption expenditure and promotes the transformation of the residents’ consumption structure from subsistence to development and enjoyment expenditure. The common mechanism of the digital economy and financial development is industrial structure optimization. The positive effects of the digital economy, financial development, and their synergy on residents’ consumption upgrading have obvious regional and urban–rural heterogeneity and show nonlinear characteristics with the advancement of new urbanization.

Consumption Upgrading and Industrial Structural Change: A General Equilibrium Analysis and Empirical Test with Low-Carbon Green Transition Constraints

Abstract:To clarify the relations between low-carbon green transition, consumption upgrading, and industrial structure change, this paper firstly builds a dynamic model of the three, then uses the PVAR Model and panel data of 30 Chinese provinces from 2008 to 2020 to carry out empirical study from the rationalization and upgrading dimensions of industrial structural change, respectively. The results are as follows: (1) Low-carbon green transition and consumption upgrading are Granger causes of each other. In this causal relationship, low-carbon green transition hinders consumption upgrading, but consumption upgrading significantly promotes low-carbon green transition. (2) Low-carbon green transition plays a facilitating and hindering role in industrial structure rationalization and upgrading, respectively. However, from the different dimensions of industrial structure change, only industrial structure upgrading has a significant reverse hindering effect on low-carbon green transition, and the reverse effect of industrial structure rationalization on low-carbon green transition is not significant. (3) Consumption upgrading has a hindering and promoting effect on the rationalization of industrial structure in the short- and long-run respectively, and a promoting and hindering effect on the industrial structure upgrading respectively; however, only industrial structure upgrading significantly promotes consumption upgrading in the opposite direction, while industrial structure rationalization has no significant effect on consumption upgrading. These findings propose some suggestions such as advocating the new way of green consumption, constructing and improving the green whole industry chain, and strengthening the synergy between imitative innovation and independent innovation.

Abstract:In recent years, China's retail market has developed vigorously, and technological progress superimposes demand changes, driving the innovation of new retail(NR) business models. Starting from the problems in the traditional retail industry, this paper analyzes the success of Freshippo in the context of consumption upgrading and uses the case analysis method to study, indicating that the three elements of "people, field and things", the change and upgrading of marketing channels and service processes are the key factors to promote the successful breakthrough of Freshippo. At the same time, the successful breakthrough of Freshippo provides experience for the transformation and upgrading of traditional retail enterprises. It offers new ideas to solve the dilemma of the traditional retail industry, enhance consumers' consumption expectations, and improve the supply reality of enterprises. This, in turn, promotes the development of the NR industry.
The puzzle of quality upgrading of Chinese exports from the trade liberalization perspective

Abstract:Trade liberalization could accelerate the process of quality upgrading through the competition effect. However, that the quality of Chinese exports exhibits an opposite performance pattern is puzzling. The present paper uses a framework based on multiproduct firms to analyse the mechanism of how the product quality of exports is affected by trade liberalization to explain this puzzle. The model includes two major mechanisms: the competition effect and the market effect. There is a huge gap in the influence on the product quality of exports between a decrease in tariff barriers and non-tariff barriers: firms' product quality increases (decreases) when non-tariff barriers (tariff barriers) fall. The data of Chinese firms from 2001 to 2011 supports this conclusion. Further research reveals that the influence of trade liberalization on the product quality of exports in China varies among different types of firms.
An Analysis of Income Constraint Effect on Rural Residents' Consumption Behaviors

Abstract:The weak consumption of rural residents has been an obstacle for further stable economic development. Tapping the consumption potential of rural residents is important for economic development in China. An empirical analysis on rural residents' consumption behaviors in different income groups shows that the consumption behaviors are different because of different income. The high-income group puts more emphasis on the consumption to improve the quality of life, by contrast, low-income group spends more to maintain a basic living because of income limitation, and middle-income group is the main consumer of the rural residents, the consumption ability of which exceeds the overall average level of consumption in rural areas. The purchasing power and MPC of different rural residents with different income are various, the rural purchasing power is concentrated to the high-income class, while the low-income class not only has a poor purchasing power but also seriously drags down the overall consumption ability in rural areas.

Abstract:<p>This paper studies the distribution dynamics of China's household consumption upgrading by using household survey data. The findings show that the consumption upgrading index is between 0.75 and 0.95 for most of the households. The convergence value of the rural households is much higher than their urban counterparts, and the rural-urban gap can be reduced in the future. However, urban poverty may exacerbate as our findings show that the urban households with consumption upgrading index around 0.63 would experience consumption downgrade. Turning to regional disparity, the western region in China would converge to the highest level of consumption upgrading index amongst the four regions, while the northeastern region would converge to the lowest level. The study suggests that consumption upgrading and development policy should pay attention to regional disparity, rural development, and urban poor, and the measures should be group specific.</p>

Abstract:Recent literature has problematized the limits of deeply held assumptions about linear, unidirectional upgrading trajectories in global value chains (GVCs). As firm and chain trajectories and sources of upgrading have changed in recent years, GVC analysis has adjusted to focus on new emerging actors and new distributions of power within value chains. After a discussion of some limits to the treatment of upgrading in the GVC literature, the paper develops a simple extension of the classical model of upgrading in ways that do not presuppose particular valuations of functional, product, and processes upgrading, and that do not fetishize upgrading as such. The paper works with case studies of four Chinese firms located in Ningbo, China. Each 'wears multiple hats' and together they provide illustrative examples of the limits of linear, unidirectional approaches of upgrading. This simple model has the singular advantage of ensuring that trajectories of business upgrading and downgrading in GVCs can be understood as always open, often operating in diverse and contradictory ways. In this sense, the confusion of upgrading with firm strategy with their regional impacts can be avoided.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the current situation of dual economic structure of urban and rural areas in China, this paper takes urban and rural areas as two independent research objects, and constructs the panel threshold regression model of consumption structure upgrading on energy consumption intensity. The results show that the upgrading of regional urban residents’ consumption structure has double threshold effect on energy intensity, and the upgrading of urban residents’ consumption structure has a restraining effect on energy intensity. With the upgrading of per capita income, it first decreases and then increases; the upgrading of regional rural residents’ consumption structure has a double threshold effect on energy intensity, the upgrading of rural residents’ consumption structure will significantly inhibit the energy intensity when the per capita income of residents is in the maximum range. In addition, under the threshold of per capita income, compared with rural areas, the upgrading of consumption structure of urban residents has a more prominent effect on the inhibition of energy intensity.

Abstract:The challenge of low consumption presents a complex development issue in China, one that has been insufficiently analyzed through the lens of land supply. This paper introduces a fresh perspective to the Chinese low consumption puzzle by shedding light on the constraints imposed by monopolistic/strategic land supply on the final consumption rate. Our findings reveal that China's distinctive land supply patterns systematically restrict consumption, as monopolistic land supply hinders total consumption by widening the share of government sector income and the urban-rural income gap. Additionally, strategic land supply curtails consumption by increasing the share of capital income and driving up housing prices. This study underscores the significance of land supply-side reforms in bolstering consumption, offering valuable policy insights for China and other transitioning economies.

Chinese Chain Shop Enterprise Management Status Quo and Countermeasures

Abstract:This paper analyses the status quo faced by the management of Chinese chain shop enterprises in four aspects: imperfect brand building, single business model, serious brain drains, and unstandardized internal management. Thus, it puts forward four countermeasures: strengthening brand building, diversified operation, establishing talent training mechanism, and standardising internal management. The final countermeasures to implement the four-point proposal: the introduction of professional organisations, strengthen the R & D capability, the establishment of training systems, and strengthen the internal supervision. The final conclusion: the current situation of China's chain shop enterprise management has some problems, but also has a huge space for development. Strengthening brand building, diversification, talent training and standardisation of internal management are the keys to solve the problems. Through the implementation of effective countermeasures, China's chain shop industry will be able to achieve more effective competition and sustainable development, contributing to the enhancement of China's economy.

Abstract:This paper presents evidence that consumption is an important drive factor contributing to dynamic industrial upgrading in urban China. This paper investigates how consumption value and variations influence TFP growth and the number of new patents, and how the profit, exports, and share of the private sector influence the relation between consumption and industrial upgrades. The household and firm matching dataset from 1998 to 2007 is employed. The results suggest that both consumption value and variations positively affect TFP growths and increase the number of new product patents. This influence appears in both the agricultural and manufacturing industry sectors. Scrutiny of the channels of the influence of consumption on industrial upgrades indicates that profit rate is significantly associated with the consumption-industrial upgrade linkage but exports do not contribute to industrial upgrades in the domestic market. Growth in the consumption of new products in the private sector significantly stimulates industrial upgrades.

Abstract:It is an inevitable requirement for social reproduction to establish long-term mechanism for expanding consumption,as well as inevitable choice to change the mode of development,to deal with financial crisis.The long-term mechanism to expand consumer demand includes the following eight mechanisms: income distribution mechanism,tax guide mechanism,social security mechanism,regional non-equilibrium mechanism,industrial promotion mechanism,benefiting farmer and strengthening agriculture and countryside mechanism,consumer financial mechanisms and optimizing the consumption environment mechanism.To establish long-term mechanism for expanding consumption,it needs to confirm government's important role,build consumption promotion fund,perfect corresponding system arrangement and boldly reform and innovate.
