An Analysis of Income Constraint Effect on Rural Residents' Consumption Behaviors

Abstract:The weak consumption of rural residents has been an obstacle for further stable economic development. Tapping the consumption potential of rural residents is important for economic development in China. An empirical analysis on rural residents' consumption behaviors in different income groups shows that the consumption behaviors are different because of different income. The high-income group puts more emphasis on the consumption to improve the quality of life, by contrast, low-income group spends more to maintain a basic living because of income limitation, and middle-income group is the main consumer of the rural residents, the consumption ability of which exceeds the overall average level of consumption in rural areas. The purchasing power and MPC of different rural residents with different income are various, the rural purchasing power is concentrated to the high-income class, while the low-income class not only has a poor purchasing power but also seriously drags down the overall consumption ability in rural areas.
