Abstract:This paper is devoted to a diachronic research on the politeness phenomena in ancient China, based on the corpus from one of the Chinese literary masterpieces, A Dream of Red Mansions. The paper re-examines FTA and revisits the three factors influencing people's choice of strategies in the contexts of ancient China: social distance, power relations, and absolute ranking of certain impositions, pointing out that: 1.) people's power relations usually derives from their social distance; 2.) power in ancient China may have different categories: absolute power, human-relation power, hierarchy power and hierarchy human-relation power; and 3.) in the hierarchy and so-called "seeking-agreement" society, many speech acts considered to be threatening one's face by Brown & Levinson actually threaten no one's face in ancient China. At last, the paper concludes five politeness principles in ancient China.

Abstract:Classics are so called for they have much to tell, which is the case of A Dream in Red Mansions.It needs further dis-cussion, apart from the wide attention it has gained in the name of"Redology".One of the focus in study lies in the comparison between the former 80 chapters composed by Cao Xueqin and the current edition with 120 chapters.Final conclusions as they have, it comes to be an important issue for reconsideration as how to make judgments upon these final conclusions, which helps us to have a better understanding and appreciation of this masterpiece.

Abstract:Jia Xu Version,Geng Chen Version and Yi Mao Version, three most important versions of "A Dream of Red Mansions",are commonly known as three Rouge Versions of "A Dream of Red Mansions".The Jia Xu Version was discovered by Hu Shi in Shanghai in 1927,the Geng Chen Version was also discovered by Hu Shi in Beijing in 1933,and the Yi Mao Version was collected in Beijing Library after liberation.Afterwards,a lot of scholars carried out further studies on them such as Hu Shi,Yu Pingbo,Cheng Zhongchi,Feng Qiyong,Ying Bicheng,etc.These discoveries and studies not only lay a more solid foundation for Redology,but also extend the scope of it.That is why Redology reached a peek in the twentieth century.

Abstract:As for the modern people,who live under the influences of modern culture and traditional culture,tracing back to the classics actually implies they expect more for the future.In ancient China,the rulers established so-called "rite order",which has its advantages and disadvantages.This paper chooses three perspectives,the younger’s obedience to the elder,male’s superiority to female and libation ceremonies,which are typical of the great Chinese classic novel,A Dream of Red Mansions,to stand for the basic order,sexual order and courtesy system in feudal China respectively,and then after a close re-examination of the relevant plots in the novel,puts forward three points of view correspondingly: first,adults’ childrenization is a common phenomenon in the novel;second,there is no trail of feminism,an important trait of modern culture,in the novel;third,the complicated procedure in libation ceremonies is not equal to formalism in a general sense,but expresses people’s worship of ancestors.And it also concludes that the traditional Chinese value system,whose nucleus is "rite",does not decline and won’t decline.

Abstract:Mr Wang Dewei's assertion that the Chinese modernity should be sought for from within literature and that modernity was repressed in the Late-Qing era was well-justified both in terms of the narrative history of modernity of China as a nation-state and in terms of the classical definition of the concept of “modernity.” However,by ignoring modern elements in The Dreams of Red Mansions,Wang's quest of the Chinese modernity stops short of the Late-Qing era,repressing the already “repressed”modernity.In fact,it is precisely The Dreams of Red Mansions representing an avant-garde novel with its “decadent”content and advanced narratological techniques that harbingers the era of Late-Qing fiction.

Abstract:As one of the four famous works in China, A Dream of Red Mansions enjoys reputation of all over the word and gains numerous readers. It reflects the background and conditions of Chinese ancient feudal society. To this end, it remain a great work in Chinese literature. Moreover, its language is simple, natural, beautiful and humorous. There are many Chinese cultural words in it, which need the translator to think deeply, and then translate, figure out the tone of the article and combine the context to achieve the harmony among the author, translator and reader. This paper aims to analyze the translation of words and sentences in Chapter 31 of A Dream of Red Mansions under the guidance of the Relevance Theory. And it seeks to find the translation methods and strategies that can be adopted when using the Relevance Theory, with the aim to achieve the optimal relevance between the source text and the target text.

Abstract:Translation serves as a bridge for telling Chinese stories and promotes the exchange of Chinese and foreign civilizations. By translating Chinese classics into foreign languages, it facilitates the international dissemination of Chinese culture and deepens the exchange and mutual learning of civilizations. As the first of China's four great classical novels, A Dream of Red Mansions is widely recognized for its literary value and achievements by scholars worldwide. From the early 19th century to the present, there have been over 100 translations into more than 30 languages. A Dream of Red Mansions represents the pinnacle of classical Chinese literature, involving complex terminology from various fields. In addition to translating ancient titles and food in the text, there are also extensive translations of ancient poems, all of which pose focal points and challenges in translation. By comparing various translations, this paper takes Hawkes' translation as an example to analyze the differences between English and Chinese in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions from the perspectives of hypotaxis and parataxis, and expound the translation strategies in this type of translation.

Abstract:Discussions on the inception of modernity have been ongoing since the last century, with some scholars attributing it to the late Qing or late Ming periods, and most still place it within the May Fourth Movement. Nevertheless, Dream of the Red Chamber already harbors factors of modernity’s inception and growth. Starting from the narratological perspective of Dream of the Red Chamber, this paper takes root in the cultural context of China’s native culture. It explores the book’s manifestation of the initial pattern of Chinese narrative modernity and its significance to the literary history of the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China and the later generations through its transcendence of Chinese classical novels when comparing its difference with western narratology. Through the dimensions of Layout of Discursive Traps, Motive Power Component, and The Aesthetic Construction of Time, borrowing from indigenous narrative theories of China, it is discovered that at the birth of Dream of the Red Chamber, China’s indigenous narrative modernity had already emerged and continued to evolve and spread, which merged with Western modernity during the late Qing period, constructing a fusion of Chinese and Western literary discourse fields.

Abstract:Confucian classics are sacred values and important basis for governing a country particularly in ancient China.As the ruling class of Qing Dynasty,Manchu minority attached much importance to them and assigned Confucian scholars to the important positions wildly.From royalties to ordinary scholars,they were so many people dig into Confucian classics and write commentaries on them.Their research covered a lot of ground on the Four Books and the Five Classics especially the Book of Changes and Neo-Confucianism.The apotheosis and extensive translation of Confucian classics gave rise to prosperity of exegetics,collation,phonology and research enthusiasm of Manchu script more than others.As the atmosphere and tendency of academic research,they think much of evidence and comprehensive adoption which influenced by the precise thought of bibliography in Qing Dynasty.
