Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:The Confucian school of idealist philosophy in the Qing Dynasty inherited thoughts of the idealist philosophy in the Song,Yuan and Ming Dynasties on the one hand, it had its own characters at the other hand. First, it had no dominant substance or thread of thoughts ;Secondly, it had no new ideas and paid much attention to ethics;Thirdly, it was struck by Western learning after the Opium War, Western learning was rejected as well as accepted by Confucian school of idealist philosophy ;Fourthly, there existed mutual belittlement and assimilation between the Han and the Song schools of classical philology during the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:All of the learning of different schools of thought in the Pre qin dyn asties originated from Yi . The thought of the school of MO characterized with upholding frugality and resisting rites music; advocating pan love, utility, laboring, self hardship, sages, ghosts, thrifty funeral, and promoting what is beneficial; resisting rituals and not believing fate and destiny. Basing on this, it is not difficult to discover that many aspects, such as advocating frugality, laboring, utility and promoting what is beneficial, of the thoughts of the MO school originated from I Ching .

Abstract:After the middle of Western Han dynasty,the debate between the ancient school and the con- temporary school of Confucian classics is the one among the Confucianists.Most of the ancient school scholars and the contemporary school scholars are intellectuals of middle-class land-owners,and the others are aristocrats.There is nothing more different in their social-political viewpoints,and both of them are a- gainst the governmental control of salt and iron trade.As for the world view,they both talk about strange disasters.Their debate is in essence a struggle for official position,especially for the position of education- al office.Were there any difference between the two schools,it is that the contemporary school is indulged in so-called“sublime words with deep meaning”,i.e.,the idealistic and mystic“correspondence between man and universe”,while the ancient school lays more emphasis on hermeneutics,and less mystic,al- though it also speaks about strange disasters.

Abstract:Qian Da-xin was one of the most important representative figures of QianJia School.His achievements on textual criticism about the study of Confucian classics and historiography had a great influence on Chinese history of studies.The achievements,which included his chant on unification of the state,the dissatisfaction on literary inquisition,the critique on autocratic tyrant,the yearning for policy of benevolence,the sympathy for women,some of his nationalistic consciousness,etc.,implied active consciousness of running the state and ecumenically ordering,profound philosophical connotations and many social political thoughts.We,who research on the history of social political thoughts in traditional China,should have a full understanding of this.

Abstract:Quanzhen school was the joint product of the cultures of the Guanlong and Qilu regions. The history of the development of Taoism can be broadly divided into an earlier and a later stage. The earlier stage was represented by Ge Hong, who lived under the Western and Eastern Jin dynasties and sought longevity. The later stage was represented by Wang Chongyang and Qiu Chuji of the Quanzhen School who inherited the Taoist inner alchemy from Chen Tuan and Zhang Boduan of the Five Dynasties and the Song dynasty. The culture of the Qi region, represented by Guanzi's philosophy, consisted of a combination of rites and laws and emphasized syncretism and openness. These cultures were combined and developed in Shandong and after the Han dynasty spread throughout China, becoming the mainstream culture. Abstract:In Qianlong and Jiaqing times,textual criticism held the very important status in the Chinese academic history which played the historical role the practical significance in inheriting the past and giving enlightenment to the following generations.Since the last years of the Qing Dynasty,senior scholars,Liang Qichao,Zhang Taiyan and others,all made the thorough researches.Because of the difficult abstruse of the academic researches on the Qing Dynasty,and the impetuosity of the academic circle in the Qing Dynasty,the researches on the Qing Dynasty were quite few.Researches on Schools of Thoughts by Chen Zu-wu were published,which is a real masterpiece.In the academic writing,Chen successfully lessens the controversies among different schools of thoughts,rectifies some biased opinions,by combining the method of "knowing people and commenting matters" with distinct cases.Chen Zu-wu wrote the book at a strategic commanding height.

Abstract:"Yang corresponding to Three and Yin to Four" is an age-old idea. The paragraph division in the Chu bamboo slips manuscript of the Zhouyi might have intuitionally applied this idea,although by the records of documents the idea doesn't refer to the paragraph division of the book of Yi. Confucius interprets the implication of the idea by the position of Yin or Yang lines,whereas the image-numerologists such as JING Fang profoundly revealed the connotations of the idea that heaven is round and earth square,Yang is odd and Yin even,and the interaction between Yin and Yang creates all beings in the universe.

Abstract:In the perspective of origin, Mohist school represented by Mo Zi is probably an exiled noble group. The difference of Confucius and Mo Zi is the significance of "rites or food", that is to say, "Is the political civilization or the material civilization more important?" The difference of Confucius and Mencius is "What is the priority of the emperor?" Is the creation of material fortune or cultivating the people more important? The difference of Mo Zi and Xun Zi is "Is the labor or the learning more important?" Is the production in which the fortune is created or the political framework with which the materials are distributed more important? The fundamental dispute of Lao Zi and Mo Zi is "non-Confucian or anti-civilization?" The fundamental difference of Zhuang Zi and Mo Zi is "pragmatic or esthetic?" The difference of Yang Zhu and Mo Zi lies in "endeavor or uselessness faith?" Mohist school is the basic theory to guide the swordsmen to practice in the society. Mohist school and the philosophy school focusing on farming production have the relationship as two sides of one whole body in the Chinese agricultural civilization.

Abstract:Hu Shi inherited the spirit of disbelieve-ancient of Qian-Jia Textural Research School of Thought, the historical perspective, the method of textural research. But he advocated collecting evidence with the method of pragmatism, conducting library and writing biography to preserve historical materials, verifying historical facts with duality-evidence method. He advocated using the method on one's own initiative and academic fair and equitable. In these respects Hu Shi surpassed Qian-Jia Textural Research School of Thought. However, he advocated dualism in historical science, history developed by accident. He exaggerated the function of individual in the school survey .His thought of leaving a matter for future consideration went to extreme. In these respects, he abandoned the reasonable factors of Qian-Jia Textural Research School of Thought. Even so, but we can't overlook the position of Hu Shi in mordern academic history of China. We should draw lessons from the remarkable achievements that he got in the realm of history and his original view of method of doing scholarly research.

Abstract:In history,Xun Zi's thoughts have not been accepted by orthodox Confucianists,and they also question his status as a Confucianist.Over 50 years after the founding of a new China,four different opinions have come into being as to which of the four schools Xun Zi's thoughts should be attributed to: Confucianism,Legalists,the School of the Emperor Huang and Lao Tzu,and his own school.However,this paper's opinion that regards Xun Zi as an Eclectic,which has always been neglected and misunderstood,can actually better reveal the features of Xun Zi's academic thoughts.

Abstract:The School of Donglin was an academic group in the late Ming Dynasty, which had ever affected its society then, characterized by concerning reality and application. Their ethical thoughts took the traditional Confucian aim with distinctive times features. In ontology, they attacked the argument of non-good and non-evil, and revived the argument of nature-good. In moral practice, they didn't pursue impractical style but advocated ZhuJing (revering in mind) and ShenDu (being cautious in mind). Their ethic was a new type of ethic that sought both reality and originality, paying attention to both knowledge and practice, which opened a route for the real learning between Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:The thinking of the relationship between virtue and happiness in the excavated document Qiongdayishi (sic)& x7aae;& x9054;(sic)& x6642;(sic) shows many links with other extant literatures. Qiongdayishi is the reflection made by Confucius and his disciplines in a life crisis. It does not consider that there is an inner correspondence between virtue and happiness, which is the same in other Confucian literature. Besides, it gives a new explanation of Qiong & x7aae; and Da & x9054;, turning them to the issue of moral autonomy of human beings. It indicates that the idea of virtue and happiness of Confucianism is complex and cannot be understood in one perspective.

Abstract:Mr. Qiu Xigui is generally acknowledged throughout the academia as an accomplished scholar in the fields of ancient philology, ancient documents and early history of China. In March 2007, he accepted the interview of the special correspondent of the Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy. During the interview, Mr. Qiu looked back upon the course of his studies and research, and talked freely on the problems of the "Ku-shih-pien" School, early Chinese history, the studies of excavated documents, "the Method of Dual Evidence", "Times of the Five Lords", etc. From his viewpoint, the "Ku-shih-pien" School is correct in the general orientation on the knowledge of the early history, but needs much redress in textual criticism, therefore nowadays, we should assimilate its historical skepticism with discrimination. Since the 1970s, there has emerged a large amount of excavated books and records, yet to the studies of the excavated documents, the handed-down ancient Classics and the studies of the Classics done by scholars through the ages are still the foundation. The main problem with the current Chinese classical studies, including the studies of excavated documents, does not lie in the lack of theory or method, but in the lack of scientific attitude on the part of the researchers. We must advocate academic morality and conscience, as well as a realistic and matter-of-the-fact attitude that holds everything for the purpose of the academics itself.

Abstract:Modern Chinese Shu School is a kind of cultural community made up of "Liao Ping" and many Shu scholars influenced by him.During the cultural transformation,from the late Qing dynasty to the Republic Period,this school aroused people's profound reflections on Chinese and western cultures,with such representatives as Meng Wentong,Liu Xianxin,Tang Junyi and so on.Xiao Jiefu has been deeply influenced by Modern Chinese Shu School via his father,Xiao Zhonglun.An attribute of Modern Chinese Shu school is that Chinese and western cultures complemented to each other relatively and characterized by the profound traditional academic background,especially the scholars are proficient in classics and history,with broad and inclusive mind,in pursuit of perfect personality,and their way of expression looks quite poetic.Philosophy and poetry promote each other harmoniously in Modern Chinese Shu School.However,for more than a hundred years,educational circles have judged the Chinese civilization only by western cultures which is not appropriate and needs reevaluation.In the background of Chinese civilization source,many attributes of Chinese nation have not been understood clearly.Mr.Xiao's research on Shu School inspires us to explore the uniqueness of Chinese civilization in the process of development.

Abstract:Confucius became interested in Zhouyi at his old age and accordingly there were some changes in his thought. Taught by Confucius in his remaining years, Zi si (grandson of Confucius) was also influenced by Confucius' thought on Yi. Materials inscribed on the bamboo slips of Chu excavated at Guo dian were generally regarded as writings of the school of Zi si's thought by the academic circle. Traces of the deep influences by the Yi-ology could also be seen in these documents. These facts may convince us of the credibility of the relationship between Confucius and Yi recorded in the Historical Records by SI-MA Qian.
