Abstract:Cadmium sulfide nano-particles with certain shapes have been sucessfully synthesized via γ-ray irradiation in the non-water system. Absolute ethanol and a mixed solution of ethanol and benzene with the volume ratio of 1:1 are used as the solvents, and carbon disulfide and sulfur powders as the sulfur ions source, respectively. When the solutions are irradiated, carbon disulfide or sulfur element is reduced into S2- by the produced solvational electrons. CdS is precipitated through the combining reaction of S2- and Cd2+ ions. The investigation reveals that the phases and sizes of the products are affected by different solvents and sulfur ions sources.

Abstract:Cadmium sulfide nano-particles with mean size of 2.3 nm have been successfully prepared by irradiating an ethanol solution of cadmium chloride and carbon disulfide with Co-60 gamma -ray. The product is characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photo-electron spectrum, respectively. The influence of the irradiation dose on the size of cadmium sulfide nano-particles is investigated by W-VIS absorption spectrum. A possible mechanism for the formation of cadmium sulfide nano-particles in ethanol system is proposed according to the result of experiments. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanostructured semiconductors are a pillar of the newly developed 'artificial photosynthesis' field of research. Cadmium sulfide is amongst the most studied semiconductors due to its suitable band structure which can utilize a sizable portion of the visible part of solar irradiation. Additionally, the band energies of this material are perfect for carrying out photochemical reactions in the aqueous medium. A wide variety of methods have been considered with the purpose of morphology engineering for this material. Herein, we report a simple yet rapid method for the synthesis of CdS nanoparticles in the realm of quantum confinement without using additives for particle growth suppression. In-situ UV–Vis spectrophotometry was used to study the formation and growth of CdS nanoparticles over time. Furthermore, the particles were characterized by XRD, XPS, DRS, FESEM, EDS, and TEM and a possible reaction mechanism has been postulated.GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Zinc sulfide colloidal particles of small dimensions were produced in situ in aqueous solution by precipitating Zn2+ ions with homogeneously released S2- ions at room temperature, which were resulted from the decomposition of Na2S2O3 With (gamma-irradiation. Abstract:gamma-Irradiation has been successfully used to prepare nanocrystalline CdS of sphalerite and wurtzite structure at room temperature. Sodium thiosulfate, mercaptoethanol and carbon disulfide were used as sulfur sources in aqueous solution or anhydrous ethanol. The formation of sphalerite and wurtzite can be controlled by using different sulfur sources in different solvents. Generally, the sulfur sources and solvents with lower polarity tend to produce the cubic wurtzite phase, while those with strong polarity give the hexagonal sphalerite phase. TEM images show that the products in anhydrous ethanol show superior dispersion, and those in aqueous solution aggregate more extensively. Possible mechanisms of the formation of cadmium sulfide in the different systems are proposed.

Abstract:The nanocrystalline semiconductors PbS and CuS were prepared by gamma-irradiation at room temperature in an ethanol system for the first time. Carbon disulfide was used as the sulfur source; lead acetate and copper chloride were used as metal ion sources. X-ray Powder Diffraction was used to characterize the products and Transmission Electron Microscopy to determine their morphology. The purity and compositions of the products were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectra. The photoluminescence property of as-prepared PbS was studied. A blue shift was observed in the PL spectra, indicating the quantum size effect on nanocrystalline PbS. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Abstract:Spherical CdS/polyacrylamide (CdS–PAM) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized in single step by γ-irradiation in a W/O microemulsion under ambient pressure at room temperature. The final product was characterized by various means such as XRD, IR, UV–vis, PL, ED and TEM. The TEM image clearly showed the homogeneous dispersion of CdS–PAM nanocomposites with the dimension of 50 nm.

Abstract:CdS and alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals were prepared by a simple noninjection method without nucleation initiators. Oleic acid (OA) was used to stabilize the growth of the CdS nanocrystals. The size of the CdS nanocrystals can be tuned by changing the OA/Cd molar ratios. On the basis of the successful synthesis of CdS nanocrystals, alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can also be prepared by simply replacing certain amount of S precursor with equal amount of Se precursor, verified by TEM, XRD, EDX as well as UV–Vis absorption analysis. The optical properties of the alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can be tuned by adjusting the S/Se feed molar ratios. This synthetic approach developed is highly reproducible and can be readily scaled up for potential industrial production.

Abstract:A facile and efficient method is described for the in situ synthesis of mesoporous CdS semiconductor nanoparticles by gamma ray irradiation in oil-in-water microemulsion. The prepared mesoporous US nanoparticles were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction (ED), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) gas sorptometry. The mesoporous structure of US nanoparticles is well-characterized by TEM and XRD. The obtained mesoporous US nanoparticles possessed a high surface area of 82.6 m(2)/g and a number of pores with the pore size distribution centered at about 9.4 nm. A possible growth mechanism for the mesoporous structure has been proposed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:CdS nanocrystals with an average diameter of 16 nm were synthesized in the CTAB/n-C5H11OH/n-C6H14/water quaternary microemulsions by a two-step hydrothermal process at 90 and 130°C. The reaction of carbamide and carbon disulfide was employed as the sulfur source for the preparation of CdS nanocrystals. The resulting crystals were characterized with powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. A unique core/shell structure of CdS nanocrystals was suggested for the explanation of the interesting phenomenon.

Abstract:Semiconductor CdS nanoparticles were synthesized by the sonochemical reduction of a mixed aqueous solution ofCdCl 2 , Na 2 S 2 O 3 and （CH 3 ） 2 CHOH in Ar atmosphere at room temperature. The results of a detailed investigationwith X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrum and optical absorption spec-troscopy are reported. A clearly red shift of the absorption edge and a broad absorption band related to the surfacestates of nanoparticles have been observed in the optical absorption spectra with the increasing of CdS particle size.The mechanisms of the CdS nanoparticle formation and size growth during sonochemical irradiation were discussed.This convenient method is found to be an efficient way to produce other chalcogenides as well.

Abstract:Silver–polystyrene and cadmium sulfide–polystyrene nanocomposite microspheres were fabricated by γ-ray irradiation. Dispersion polymerization induced by γ-ray irradiation was exploited to prepare monodispersed polystyrene microspheres. Silver (Ag) and cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles were generated on the polystyrene microsphere surface via subsequent reduction of Ag+ by γ-ray irradiation, as well as by precipitation reaction of Cd2+ and S2−, which was released from the decomposition of Na2S2O3 upon γ-ray irradiation. The products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The TEM images demonstrate that well-dispersed silver (∼11 nm) and cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (∼23 nm) were attached to the surface of polystyrene microspheres (∼380 nm).

Abstract:ZnS nanoparticles and one-dimensional nanocrystals were obtained by in-situ synthesis in Aa-AMPS-hT ternary periodic copolymer by ion complexometry and self-assembly method. The micro-morphology, structure and optical properties were characterized by TEM, SED, UV-vis spectra and PL spectra. The results show that the products are hexagonal ZnS nanocrystals with 15 nm-215 nm in diameter. The morphology and dimension of ZnS nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the sulfaration time. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the absorption edges are blue-shifted by shortening the sulfuration time, exhibiting a marked quantum size effect. With shortening sulfuration time, the photoluminescence emission peak of 409.8 nm is blue-shifted, which could be ascribed to be the forbidden gap emission.

Abstract:CdS nano material which has a band gap of 2.42 eV at room temperature is a typical II-VII semiconductor having many commercial or potential applications, e.g., light-emitting diodes, solar cell and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we use a new strategy to synthesize CdS nanorods. CdS nanorods were prepared in soft template under gamma-irradiation though the reaction of cadmium sulphide and thiacetamide (TAA). The formation process and characters of CdS nanorods was investigated in detail by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED) pattern, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet spectrophotometer (UV) and photoluminescence spectrophotometer (PL). In the experiment we proposed that the irradiation of gamma-ray accelerated the formation of S(2-) under acidic condition (pH = 3) and vinyl acetate (VAc) monomer formed pre-organized nano polymer tubules which were used as both templates and nanoreacters for the growth of CdS nanorods. In this process, we have obtained the CdS polycrystal nanorods with PVAc nano tubules and CdS single-crystal nanorods. The result of X-ray powder diffraction confirms that the crystal type of CdS nanorods is cubic F-43 m (216). The results from transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction show that the concentrations of reactants and the dose rate of gamma-ray are key to produce appropriate CdS nanorods. Relatively low concentrations (Cd2+: 0.008-0.02 mol/L, Cd2+ : S(2-) = 1 : 2) of reactants and long time (1-2 d) of irradiation in low dose rate (6-14 Gy/min) are propitious to form CdS single-crystal nanorods with small diameter (less than 100 nm) and well length (2-5 microm). UV and PL characterizations show the sample have well optical properties.
