Abstract:A wavefront analysis method of pinhole point-diffraction based on waveguide theory is proposed in this paper. In this method, the pinhole is treated as a circular waveguide and the modes in the waveguide arc calculated by analytical method to acquire the electric field distribution at the back surface of the pinhole. Next, diffraction wavefront in the far field is derived by the vector diffraction theory. Finally, the pinhole transmittance, the intensity and the phase of the diffraction wavefront arc analyzed in detail. Results show that the boundary conditions of the waveguide cause the rotation asymmetry of the electric field components at the back surface of the pinhole, and then introduce the astigmatism aberration into the diffraction wavefront. In order to make the transmittance larger than zero, the pinhole diameter must be greater than 0.6 lambda to ensure that the modes in the pinhole meet the waveguide transmission conditions. The difference of the amplitude distribution between two electric field components in diffraction wavefront leads to rotational asymmetry of the intensity of the diffraction wavefront, while the difference of the phase distribution makes the diffraction wavefront elliptically polarized. Simulation results obtained in this method provide vital reference for the design of the pinhole structure in the point-diffraction interferometer.

Abstract:Recently, phase retrieval techniques have garnered significant attention with their exceptional flexibility. However, their application is limited in optical systems with high numerical aperture due to the disregarded polarization properties of the beam. In this paper, a fast wavefront sensing method for tightly focused systems is proposed. Firstly, a vector diffraction model based on the chirp-Z transform is established to analytically describe the focal spot using the modal coefficients of polynomials and diffraction basis vectors, which accommodating any pixel size and resolution, thereby enabling to break through sampling constraints and remove lateral errors. Additionally, a modified Newton-gradient second-order algorithm is introduced to simultaneously optimize wavefront in multiple polarization directions, without the need for diffraction operators during iterations. Both numerical simulations and error analysis confirm the efficacy and precision of the proposed wavefront sensing method.

Abstract:A wave equation method tracing wavefield propagation path is proposed with ray theory.A windowed Fourier frame expansion technique is employed for angle decomposition of wavefields of source-point and target-point.Directional illumination is calculated.An angle coherence technique is applied to directional illumination to acquire propagation path between source-point and target-point.The method takes into account focusing and defocusing effects of the wavefield propagation caused by inhomogeneous media.

Abstract:According to that the boundary wave has a π phase jump property, the diffraction of the plane wave and the spherical wave through an aperture was analyzed by wavefront diagram. The method can be used not only in the case where the aperture radius a is much larger than wavelength λ, but also in the case when aperture radius is close to λ. Many properties of diffraction in the Fresnel region can be obtained. The viewpoint of that the point of unit Fresnel number can be drawn to infinity was proposed and verified by experiment. The existence of the phase jump in boundary wave and its practicability were confirmed.
Research on Design of Optimum Phase Mask for Wave-Front Coded Imaging System

Abstract:Wave-front coding is a system level design method which can be used to extend the depth of field of an incoherent optical system. By attaching a phase mask to the aperture, the optical transfer function can not only be made insensitive to misfocus, but also can avoid the isolated zeros caused by defocus. With this modified optical transfer function, a purposely blurred image can be obtained and its corresponding clear one with large depth of focus can be generated through digital processing techniques, such as direct inverse filtering, wiener filtering and maximum entropy restoration and so on. This is why the wave-front coded imaging system is called optical/digital hybrid imaging system as well. The most important part of the system design lies in the design of phase masks. So far, many kinds of phase masks have been suggested; among all those types, two are classical: cubic-phase-mask and logarithmic-phase-mask. However, whether an optimum phase mask exists or not is still a question that is not answered yet. This paper focuses on this question and tries to find one answer. In this paper, considering several critical factors and with the help of a simulation program developed by ourselves, we make a comparison among the performance of different phase masks and finally propose a prototype phase mask whose performance is acceptable in several aspects.

Abstract:We describe the use of a Wigner distribution function approach for exploring the problem of extending the depth of field in a hybrid imaging system. The Wigner distribution function, in connection with the phase-space curve that formulates a joint phase-space description of an optical field, is employed as a tool to display and characterize the evolving behavior of the amplitude point spread function as a wave propagating along the optical axis. It provides a comprehensive exhibition of the characteristics for the hybrid imaging system in extending the depth of field from both wave optics and geometrical optics. We use it to analyze several well-known optical designs in extending the depth of field from a new viewpoint. The relationships between this approach and the earlier ambiguity function approach are also briefly investigated. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.
Analysis of numerical diffraction calculation methods: from the perspective of phase space optics and the sampling theorem

Abstract:Diffraction calculations are widely used in applications that require numerical simulation of optical wave propagation. Different numerical diffraction calculation methods have their own transform and sampling properties. In this study, we provide a unified analysis where five popular fast diffraction calculation methods are analyzed from the perspective of phase space optics and the sampling theorem: single fast Fourier transform-based Fresnel transform, Fresnel transfer function approach, Fresnel impulse response approach, angular spectrum method, and Rayleigh-Sommerfeld convolution. The evolutions of an input signal's space-bandwidth product (SBP) during wave propagation are illustrated with the help of a phase space diagram (PSD) and an ABCD matrix. It is demonstrated that all of the above methods cannot make full use of the SBP of the input signal after diffraction; and some transform properties have been ignored. Each method has its own restrictions and applicable range. The reason why different methods have different applicable ranges is explained with physical models. After comprehensively studying and comparing the effect on the SBP and sampling properties of these methods, suggestions are given for choosing the proper method for different applications and overcoming the restrictions of corresponding methods. The PSD and ABCD matrix are used to illustrate the properties of these methods intuitively. Numerical results are presented to verify the analysis, and potential ways to develop new diffraction calculation methods are also discussed. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Numerical calculation of Fresnel diffraction is widely used in optical applications where wave propagation is needed. Most cases for simulating Fresnel diffraction only consider sampling of complex amplitude fields, which lacks comprehensiveness when different diffraction fields are of interest. In this study, from the perspective of phase space optics, we provide systematical analysis on the sampling of all Fresnel diffraction fields, including the complex amplitude, intensity, amplitude, and phase. The space-bandwidth product of each field is illustrated with the aid of a phase space diagram, which is further demonstrated from a physical point of view. Such comprehensive sampling analysis could provide practical suggestions to the numerical calculations of various diffraction fields according to the requirements. Numerical experiments with discrete Fresnel diffraction are implemented to verify feasibility of the analyses.

Abstract:Abstract In physical optics, Fresnel diffraction matters. The single Fourier transform method has been widely used in Fresnel diffraction calculation and can perform the direct computation of the output field with high efficiency. Based on a phase-space analysis, we find that the conventional single Fourier transform method cannot correctly deal with the full bandwidth of the input field. Aliasing occurs with high-frequency components because the bandwidth transfer capacity of the conventional method is insufficient, which greatly deteriorates the calculation accuracy. To address this serious problem, we propose a single Fourier transform-based full-bandwidth Fresnel diffraction calculation method. By rearrangement of the sampling resources, all the frequency components can be correctly transferred for accurate, efficient, and flexible Fresnel diffraction calculation.

Abstract:Quantitative phase analysis is one of the major applications of X-ray powder diffraction. The essential principle of quantitative phase analysis is that the diffraction intensity of a component phase in a mixture is proportional to its content. Nevertheless, the diffraction intensity of the component phases cannot be compared with each other directly since each phase has its specific diffraction power. The diffraction power of the unit cell of a crystal is well represented by the sum of the squared structure factors, which cannot be calculated directly when the structure data is unavailable. Here a method was demonstrated to calculate the diffraction power using only the chemical contents in the unit cell of a crystal, which enables quantitative phase analysis on a mixture sample consisting of crystalline phases with unknown atomic structures.

Abstract:Inverse diffraction refers to recovering the input field in the plane z = 0 from the knowledge of the field in some plane z > 0 of the free half-space to which the input field propagates. With the rapid development of computational optics, inverse diffraction is increasingly used in optimization and imaging simulations involving round-trip wave propagation. This increasing usage makes it necessary and valuable to revisit this old, important problem and clarify some existing ambiguities. In this study, an exhaustive inverse diffraction analysis is presented from the perspective of phase space. With the help of the Wigner distribution function, it is shown that the forward and inverse diffraction processes in phase space are geometrically equivalent to the deformation and recovery of the phase space diagram (PSD). The symmetries of PSD transformations corresponding to different inverse diffraction forms are revealed. The ambiguities between the conjugation of diffraction kernels and the negative diffraction distance are clarified. The physical pictures of inverse diffraction are further given. This phase space analysis provides an intuitive view on problems involving inverse diffraction and a more concise approach for understanding propagation behaviors of three-dimensional wave fields, including the phase conjugation in holography.

Abstract:The wave-front engineering for nonlinear optical interactions was discussed. Using Huygens-Fresnel principle we developed a general theory and technique for domain engineering with conventional quasi-phase-matching structures being the special cases. By Fourier analysis we put forward the concept of local quasi-phase matching, which suggests that the quasi-phase matching is fulfilled only locally not globally. Experiments on focal effect of second-harmonic wave agreed well with the theoretical prediction. The proposed scheme combines three optical functions: generation, focusing and beam splitting of second-harmonic wave, thus making the device more compact. Further the proposed scheme can be used to perform the integration of multi-functional optical properties in nonlinear photonics, as well as expand the use of nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:Phase carries crucial information about the light propagation process, and the visualization and quantitative measurement of phase have important applications, ranging from ultra-precision metrology to biomedical imaging. Traditional phase measurement techniques typically require large and complex optical systems, limiting their applicability in various scenarios. Optical metasurfaces, as flat optical elements, offer a novel approach to phase measurement by manipulating light at the nanoscale through light-matter interactions. Metasurfaces are advantageous due to their lightweight, multifunctional, and easy-to-integrate nature, providing new possibilities for simplifying traditional phase measurement methods. This review categorizes phase measurement techniques into quantitative and non-quantitative methods and reviews the advancements in metasurface-based phase measurement technologies. Detailed discussions are provided on several methods, including vortex phase contrast, holographic interferometry, shearing interferometry, the Transport of Intensity Equation (TIE), and wavefront sensing. The advantages and limitations of metasurfaces in phase measurement are highlighted, and future research directions are explored.

Both kinematic and dynamical theories of multi-beam diffraction are discussed, together with the relevant wavefields, polarization factors and dispersion surfaces. The historical developments in phase detection and determination are discussed at length, and the applications of multiple diffraction to crystal structure determination are briefly outlined.

Abstract:A novel wavefront sensing method based on phase contrast theory and coherent optical processing is proposed. The wavefront gradient field in the object plane is modulated into intensity distribution in a gang of patterns, making high-density detection available. By applying the method, we have also designed a wavefront sensor. It consists of a classical coherent optical processing system, a CCD detector array, two pieces of orthogonal composite sinusoidal gratings, and a mechanical structure that can perform real-time linear positioning. The simulation results prove and demonstrate the validity of the method and the sensor in high-precision measurement of the wavefront gradient field.
