Abstract:Recently, a relatively new hybrid capacitor is reported , which uses different principles in storing energy and has the advantage of storing about 5-10 times more energy than electric double-layers capacirtors (EDLC) [1-10]. At the aspect of EDLC, graphite/activated carbon composites as electrode materials is reported, which possesses the characteristics of batteries and capacitors [11]. In this communication, we report a hybrid graphite/soft carbon composite material as negative electrode of hybrid capacitors to increase the capacity and rate capability of the capacitors. The hydrid capacitor is composed of lithium intercalated composite anode and activated carbon (AC) cathode with lithium containing electrolyte, and the electrochemical performance are studied. The results show that the graphite/soft carbon negative electrode sheet is composed of graphite and carbon particles through physically mixed-mode. Through pre-doping lithium technique in the Li/composite material two-electrode, the lithium ions intercalate into the composite material electrode. During the charge/discharge process in a hybrid capacitor, lithium-ion intercalation/deintercalation occurs within the bulk of negative electrode while anion adsorption/desorption occurs on the surface of the AC positive electrode. When graphite and soft carbon are mixed at the mass ratio of 50:50, the hybrid capacitor has the best rate performance and the highest capacity. Further investigation concerning the influence of the composite materials with different lithium containing electrolytes in hydrid capacitors is underway.
