Abstract:A novel controllable rectifier type SVC's topology has been proposed comparing with the traditional SVC. What's more, the novel SVC can be also easily configured as a de-icing device by changing the position of internal switch. Compared with the traditional TCR type SVC this controllable rectifier type SVC features simple switch operation between de-icing mode and SVC mode. The preliminary feasible analyzing and simulation have been completed. The prototype has also successfully finished the operation experiments of Starting, De-icing mode operation and SVC mode operation respectively and the switch between the two modes. Now, the prototype has been put into trial-operation in one of the utility's hub-substation. While this paper investigates the controllable rectifier type SVC's impact on the transient stability of power systems. The software of PSD-BPA is employed to perform the analyzing of the transient stability features. Firstly, the mentioned new type SVC is modeled according to the existing STATCOM model by equivalent transformations. Then the simulations are performed based on the failure modes including single-phase, two-phase ground and three-phase short circuit. The simulation results show that the controllable rectifier type SVC does have the function to support the local substation transient voltage and this voltage support function is significantly enhance when the system is weakened or the capacity of the new type SVC is increased. And it also has the function to damp the power oscillation and power angle swing. Therefore, the performance of the controllable rectifier type SVC and de-icing device is proven satisfactory.
