Abstract:Abbe’s diffraction limit restricts the resolution of an optical imaging and lithography system. A coherent Rabi oscillation is shown to be able to overcome the diffraction limit in both optical and atom lithography. In previous studies, semiclassical theory is applied, where the driving field is treated as a classical light, and quantum fluctuation is neglected. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuation may reduce the visibility of the superresolution pattern. However, by squeezing the photon number fluctuation, we are able to significantly increase its visibility.
Gain-Assisted Negative Refractive Index in a Quantum Coherent Medium

Abstract:A new scheme for overcoming losses with incoherent optical gain in a quantum-coherent left-handed atomic vapor is suggested. In order to obtain low-loss, lossless or active left-handed media (LHM), a pump fleld, which aims at realizing population inversion of atomic levels, is introduced into a four-level atomic system. Both analytical and numerical results are given to illustrate that such an atomic vapor can exhibit intriguing electric and magnetic responses required for achieving simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability (and hence a gain-assisted quantum-coherent negative refractive index would emerge). The quantum-coherent left-handed atomic vapor presented here could have four fascinating characteristics: i) three-dimensionally isotropic negative refractive index, ii) double- negative atomic medium at visible and infrared wavelengths, iii) high-gain optical ampliflcation, and iv) tunable negative refractive index based on quantum coherent control. Such a three-dimensionally isotropic gain medium with negative refractive index at visible and infrared frequencies would have a potential application in design of new quantum optical and photonic devices, including superlenses for perfect imaging and subwavelength focusing.

Abstract:An experimentally feasible and promising scheme for realizing simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability in a single-photon off-resonant atomic vapor is suggested by taking full advantage of the mechanism of two-photon resonance that is assisted by atomic phase coherence. The present quantum-coherent atomic vapor can exhibit three-dimensionally isotropic negative refractive index (NRI) at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, and would find potential applications in design of NRI-based quantum optical and photonic devices.

Abstract:A scenario for realizing simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability of a two-photon quantum-coherent atomic vapor is suggested in order to achieve a left-handed atomic medium with a negative refractive index. One of the remarkable features of the present scheme is that it can lead to a controllable manipulation of the negative refractive index of the atomic vapor. Since the electric- and magnetic-dipole allowed transitions of atoms can be excited by visible and infrared lightwaves, the refractive index of the atomic vapor can exhibit its negative refractive index at optical and near-optical frequency bands. This may be a new scheme to fabricate a negatively refracting material based on the quantum optical approach. Such a three-dimensionally isotropic negative refractive index at visible and infrared wavelengths induced by the two-photon-resonant quantum coherence would find a potential application in fabrication of superlenses for perfect imaging and subwavelength focusing. Abstract:Atoms are ideal quantum sensors and quantum light emitters. Interfacing atoms with nanophotonic devices promises novel nanoscale sensing and quantum optical functionalities. But precise optical control of atomic states in these devices is challenged by the spatially varying light-atom coupling strength, generic to nanophotonic. We demonstrate numerically that despite the inhomogenuity, composite picosecond optical pulses with optimally tailored phases are able to evanescently control the atomic electric dipole transitions nearly perfectly, with $f>99\%$ fidelity across large enough volumes for {\it e.g.} controlling cold atoms confined in near-field optical lattices. Our proposal is followed by a proof-of-principle demonstration with a $^{85}$Rb vapor -- optical nanofiber interface, where the excitation by an $N=3$ sequence of guided picosecond D1 control reduces the absorption of a co-guided nanosecond D2 probe by up to $\sim70\%$. The close-to-ideal performance is corroborated by comparing the absorption data across the parameter space with first-principle modeling of the mesoscopic atomic vapor response. Extension of the composite technique to $N\geq 5$ appears highly feasible to support arbitrary local control of atomic dipoles with exquisite precision. This unprecedented ability would allow error-resilient atomic spectroscopy and open up novel nonlinear quantum optical research with atom-nanophotonic interfaces.
A Dressed-State Assisted Left-Handed Coherent Medium for High-Gain Optical Amplification

Abstract:A scheme of double-negative left-handed atomic vapor medium based on dressed-state assisted simultaneous electric and magnetic resonances is suggested. In this mechanism, simultaneous electric- and magnetic-dipole allowed transitions of atoms are driven by an optical wave by taking full advantage of both mixed-parity dressed-state assisted resonance and incoherent population pumping in a quantum-coherent atomic medium (e.g., alkali-metal atomic vapor). Since the simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability can be achieved in a same frequency band, such an atomic vapor will exhibit an incoherent-gain double-negative refractive index that is three-dimensionally isotropic and homogeneous. The imaginary part of the negative refractive index of the present atomic vapor would be drastically suppressed or would become negative because of loss compensation through incoherent population transfer. The quantum-coherent left-handed atomic vapor presented here will have four characteristics: i) three-dimensionally isotropic and homogeneous negative refractive index, ii) double-negative atomic medium at visible (and infrared) wavelengths, iii) tunable negative refractive index based on dressed-state quantum coherence, and iv) high gain due to incoherent pumping action.
Quantum-Vacuum Effects And Quantum Coherence In Artificial Electromagnetic Materials

Abstract:Artificial electromagnetic materials can be utilized to manipulate light propagations, and have potential applications in designs of photonic and quantum optical devices. Multilevel quantum coherent media is one kind of such artificial electromagnetic materials. Some physically interesting effects due to the combination of quantum coherence and quantum vacuum, i.e., the tunable quantum coherent effects, in which the quantum-vacuum fluctuation field is involved, are suggested. Two topics are addressed: i) the spontaneous emission inhibition due to quantum interference in a three-level system; ii) the quantum light-induced potentials for coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves. The light-induced quantum guiding potentials could be utilized to cool and trap atoms, and may be used for the development of new techniques of atom fibers and atom chips, where the coherent manipulation of atomic matter waves is needed. In addition, the physical foundation of quantum coherence is analyzed and its counterparts in other fields are suggested. It is well known that the mechanism of atomic CPT (coherent population trapping) and EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) is the quantum destructive interference. However, there are some interesting analogues in field theory such as quark mixing mechanism that also exhibits such a phase coherence. We compare the quantum interferences of the atomic CPT with the quark mixing (and GIM mechanism) in the weak interaction. It is shown that the quantum destructive interference presented here is one of the common characteristics of many quantum coherent processes. The scheme presented here may have a potential significance in both pure and applied physics, e.g., providing us with a new insight into the physical essence of quantum coherence in various physical processes, and applying the quantum-vacuum effects to the development of new photonic devices.

Abstract:An enhancement of the index of refraction accompanied by vanishing absorption is shown to be possible in an ensemble of phase-coherent atoms ("phaseonium"). A survey of various possible schemes in which coherence is established by certain coherent or incoherent methods is given, and the main results are compared and contrasted. In particular, the influence of processes such as Doppler broadening that degrade coherence is discussed.

Estimates of cw intensity limits for a given index of refraction are obtained. We calculate critical field intensities for self-focusing and investigate the stability of the absorption cancellation with regard to intensity fluctuations.

Abstract:We show that it is possible, in principle, to employ an incoherent field as a control field to achieve maximal atomic coherence for a probe field, which characterizes ultralarge index of refraction and vanishing absorption. For this purpose we consider a three-level V system in which there are two dipole transitions, of which one is weak and the other is strong. The strong probe field is applied to the weak transition and the incoherent field drives the strong transition. For such an arrangement, selective dressed-population trapping, which corresponds to maximal atomic coherence, is established by relying on the incoherent field and the spontaneous relaxation to transfer population from one dressed state to the other. This scheme as an extreme example explains that strong-field index enhancement based on selective dressed-population trapping is resistant to the control field fluctuations.

Abstract:All known optical materials have an index of refraction of order unity. Despite the tremendous implications that an ultrahigh index could have for optical technologies, little research has been done on why the refractive index of materials is universally small, and whether this observation is fundamental. Here, we investigate the index of an ordered arrangement of atoms, as a function of atomic density. At dilute densities, this problem falls into the realm of quantum optics, where atoms do not interact with one another except via the scattering of light. On the other hand, when the lattice constant becomes comparable to the Bohr radius, the electronic orbitals begin to overlap, giving rise to quantum chemistry. We present a minimal model that allows for a unifying theory of index spanning these two regimes. A key aspect is the treatment of multiple light scattering, which can be highly non-perturbative over a large density range, and which is the reason that conventional theories of the index break down. In the quantum optics regime, we show that ideal light-matter interactions can have a single-mode nature, allowing for a purely real refractive index that grows with density as $(N/V)^{1/3}$. At the onset of quantum chemistry, we show how two physical mechanisms (excited electron tunneling dynamics and the buildup of electronic density-density correlations) can open up inelastic or spatial multi-mode light scattering processes, which ultimately reduce the index back to order unity while introducing absorption. Around the onset of chemistry, our theory predicts that ultrahigh index ($n\sim 30$), low-loss materials could in principle be allowed by the laws of nature.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for realizing large refractive index with vanishing absorption in a three-level quantum system consisting of the energy levels of Er3+-doped ZrF4–BaF2–LaF3–AlF3–NaF (ZBLAN) optical fiber. It is found that the refractive index of the probe field can be controlled via the coherent coupling field and incoherent pumping field. The switching from negative refractive index to positive refractive index and manipulation of the value of the index of refraction while maintaining vanishing absorption of the probe field can be achieved via tuning the detuning of the coherent coupling field. Our scheme may provide some new possibility for technological applications in fiber communication.
Pumped quantum systems: immersion fluids of the future?

Abstract:Quantum optical techniques may yield immersion fluids with high indices of refraction without absorption. We describe one such technique in which a probe field experiences a large index of refraction with amplification rather than absorption, and examine its practicality for an immersion lithography application. Enhanced index can be observed in a three-level system with a tunable, near-resonant, coherent probe and incoherent pump field that inverts population of the probe transition. This observation contradicts the common belief that large indices of refraction are impossible without absorption, however it is well in accord with existing electromagnetic theory and practice. Calculations show that a refractive index >> 2 is possible with practical experimental parameters. A scheme with an incoherent mixture of pumped and unpumped atoms is also examined, and is seen to have a lower refractive index (~2) accompanied by neither gain nor loss.

Abstract:We investigate the absorption/dispersion properties of an ensemble of coherently driven three-level atoms in a modified reservoir such as the photonic band gap structure. We found that the index of refraction with vanishing absorption can be enhanced more than in the normal vacuum reservoir. Furthermore, the driving field which maintains the atomic coherence, suffers from order of magnitude less absorption.

Abstract:We develop a fully quantum treatment of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a vapor of three-level $\Lambda$-type atoms. Both the probe and coupling lasers with arbitrary intensities are quantized, and treated on the same footing. In addition to reproducing known results on ultraslow pulse propagation at the lowest order in the ratio of their Rabi frequencies, our treatment uncovers that the atomic medium with EIT exhibits giant Kerr as well as higher order non-linearities. Enhancement of many orders of magnitude is predicted for higher-order refractive-index coefficients.

Counter-Counter-Intuitive Quantum Coherence Effects

Abstract:The study of an ensemble of phase–coherent atoms has recently lead to interesting theoretical innovations and experimental demonstrations of counter–intuitive effects such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), lasing without inversion (LWI), enhancement of index of refraction and ultra–large nonlinear susceptibility. In the present notes, we report a couple of new effects along these lines. In fact, it would be fair to call them surprises even in the repertoire of ‘counter–intuitive effects’, i.e. ‘counter–counter–intuitive effects’. Specifically, we will show that the LWI concept, which is based on quantum coherence, has a surprising counterpart in the classical physics of free electron laser operation. In other current work, we find that it is possible to ‘lock’ atoms in an excited state via atomic coherence. It is, by now, not surprising that such a phase–coherent ensemble can show holes or dark lines in the emission spectrum. It is surprising that we can lock atoms in an excited (normally decaying) state via atomic coherence and interference. Such a phase–coherent collection of atoms, i.e. ‘phaseonium’, is indeed a novel new state of matter.

Abstract:We consider strong-field index enhancement in three-level systems in which there is a strong spontaneous decay from an auxiliary level into either of two states that the probe field couples. A control field is detuned resonant with the transition between the auxiliary level and one of the dressed states produced by the strong probe field. It is shown that it is possible to achieve maximal atomic coherence, which characterizes an ultralarge index of refraction and vanishing absorption. This scheme is based on selective dressed population trapping, which is established by relying on the control field and the strong decay to transfer population from one dressed state to another through the auxiliary level. An advantage of the present scheme is that the conditions for its realization are accessible experimentally.

Abstract:We have studied two-dimensional (2D) absorption, gain, and corresponding refractive index profiles in a ladder-type three-level atomic system interacting with three coherent fields. One is a weak probe field considered as a plane wave, while the other two are the control fields taken as two Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) doughnut beams. Position dependence of two vortex beams induces the spatially modulated coherence at the condition of resonance, which enables us to obtain space-dependent absorption, transparency, gain without inversion (GWI), and refractive index enhancement in the present scheme. The azimuthal modulation of coherence effects is attributed to the presence of optical angular momentum (OAM) of the vortex beams. Under the influence of an additional travelling wave field with the presence of two vortex beams, the present model leads us to obtain an ultra-large enhancement of refractive index at the resonant detuning of the fields. This phenomenon makes the atom-field system to play the equivalent role of a high-refractive-index prism. The role of near dipole-dipole (NDD) interaction on the modulation of position-dependent coherence effects has also been investigated. It has been shown that, without any inclusion of the travelling wave field in the system, the phenomenon of resonant enhancement of refractive index may also occur in the presence of NDD effect. The new way of generating spatially controlled GWI and nonlinear refractive index enhancement is specific to the present model. This work seems to be useful for finding its applications in spatially modulated coherence controlled electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-based quantum devices like quantum optical memory, switches, and quantum logic gates, where the refractive index switching phenomenon is a prerequisite.

Abstract:This paper attempts a probe into negative refraction without absorption by means of an incoherent pump field and a strong coherent field coupling the dense four-level atomic system.With the application of the incoherent pump field to manipulate the populations in atomic levels and the variable strong coherent field to create quantum coherence, the constraint condition of two equal transition frequencies responding to the probe field in the atomic system isn't required.And these lead to the propagation transparency and strong magnetic response of the probe field,left-handedness with vanishing absorption in the atomic system.However,an excessive coherent field intensity would increase the absorption.
