Abstract:The balance and cycling characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus for Wangjiagou small watershed of Fulin district in Three-Gorges Reservoir region were analyzed based on the investigation data of agricultural activities and monitoring data of runoff N and P loss during a complete cropping year. The average input and output of N and P(by weight of elemental N or P) for the cropped soils in the watershed was 816 and 115 kg/ha·a and 462 and 32 kg/ha·a,respectively,thus resulting in a surplus of 354 and 83 kg/ha·a,respectively.Chemical fertilizer, crop straw returning and application of animal manure and domestic wastes were the major input sources of N and P for the cropped soils, contributing 72.3%,14.7% and 8.1% of the total N input, and 82.9%,9.2% and 7.4% of the total P input, respectively. The harvest of crop economic products was the major output sources of N and P from the cropped soils, accounting for 46.2% of the total N output and 98.0% of the total P output. In contrast, runoff loss accounted for only 3.5% of the total N output and 2.0% of the total P output. The rates of chemical fertilizer loss through runoff were 2.7% for N and 0.7% for P.Among the three major agricultural land uses in the study watershed, tuber mustard system had the largest effect on the balance of N and P of the cropped soils, contributing 61.9% of the surplus N and 79.9% of the surplus P;followed by the maize system with a contribution of 32.8% and 19.9% to the surplus N and P,respectively;the rice system contributed only 5.3% and 0.2% to the surplus N and P,respectively. Therefore,a full account and rational application of fertilizers from various sources to reduce the surplus of N and P in upland cropped soils(especially for tuber mustard and maize systems) is the key to mitigate the adverse effect of agricultural activities on environmental quality in the study watershed.
