Political Rituals in the View of Postmodernism: An Analysis Based on Drama Metaphor

Abstract:Political rituals with profound traditional significance remain politically meaningful to the modern society, and drama metaphor provides a postmodern approach to the studies of political rituals. Clued in by the logic of a drama in a metaphoric way and with dramatization as a core, political rituals are considered as a special device for producing and reproducing political power. The structure , function and purpose of political rituals are in close relation to the acquisition, maintenance and subversion of political legitimacy. The construction of legitimacy in political rituals depends on a setting of space-time, personnel arrangements and implements installations, etc. , and a series of performance actions which include the implementation of discipline and control, loyalty and faith as well as the ritualistic strategy. Meanwhile, the acknowledgement of power and legitimacy will be converted to the social memory, thus being imprinted and embedded in the surface texture and deep structure of political life.
