Abstract:In this paper, a wideband accurate dB-linear variable-gain amplifier (VGA) is presented, which consists of three cascading gain stages with dc-offset cancellation. Based on duplicate biasing and active load techniques, this VGA achieves merits such as simple and accurate continuous dB-linear gain control, gain robustness to process and supply voltage variation and constant bandwidth at different gain settings. The dB-linear gain control is realized based on exponential current steering. The exponential conversion can be based on bipolar transistors or MOS transistors in subthreshold region. Both ways are implemented in this design for comparison purpose. With temperature compensation circuit, this VGA is insensitive to temperature variation. All gain stages of the VGA share the same biasing, exponential V-I conversion and temperature compensation circuits to reduce design complexity. This proposed VGA is fabricated in 55-nm CMOS technology with a core area of 0.033 mm(2). The measurement results show the proposed VGA has a dB-linear gain-control range from -37dB to 14 dB with an error within 0.65 dB. The -3dB bandwidth of the VGA is 740 MHz and is nearly constant when the gain varies. The core VGA circuit consumes about 2.49 mW. The proposed design features wide bandwidth, small chip area, and low power consumption.

Abstract:A reconfigurable fully integrated automatic gain control (AGC) amplifier is presented which is based on a dual mode continuous gain adjustment variable-gain amplifier (VGA). The VGA is realized based on the current-steering structure, achieving a linear-in-dB gain tuned by AGC’s feedback voltage. A current division active load is proposed, which provides additional gain control range and realizes gain robustness to process and supply variations without extra calibration. Simulated with Cadence IC, the maximum gain variations due to process and supply variations are 3.5 dB and 2.6 dB, respectively. By using dual mode gain tuning technique, the VGA achieves a total gain range of 68.2 dB. Both bandwidth and gain of the VGA are adjusted independently. The AGC is realized in UMC 55-nm CMOS technology with 0.026 mm 2 core area. With the current division ratio K of 0.5, the proposed VGA achieves a linear-in-dB gain of 42.2 dB (−30.0 to 12.2 dB) with less than 0.79 dB error. The −3 dB bandwidth can be adjusted from 80 MHz to 140 MHz and is insensitive to gain variations. The power dissipation is from 2.9 mW to 4.5 mW. This design features bandwidth scalability and the gain independent of bandwidth to achieve various applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-performance dB-linear variable gain amplifier (VGA) based on gain interpolation is introduced. The VGA core uses a resistor ladder as an attenuator to get different attenuation steps of the input signal. By smoothly moving the gain from one step to the next step, an accurate dB-linear gain characteristic is achieved. A low noise amplifier and a post amplifier are integrated to get lower noise and ensure high linearity, respectively. The chip is fabricated in a 180nm SiGe process and occupies a die area of 1.15mm(2). The total gain range is 48dB and the measured gain error is less than 0.27dB. The whole VGA consumes 30mA current from a 5V supply and the bandwidth is 120MHz. The measured in-band input referred noise density is 1nV/root Hz and the measured OIP3 is 33dBm.

Abstract:In this letter, a variable-gain amplifier (VGA) cell with an accurate dB-linear characteristic is proposed. By adopting a double-duplicate-biasing technique, this VGA cell achieves simple but effective continuous dB-linear gain control. The VGA cell features wide bandwidth, small chip area, and low power consumption. Based on the proposed VGA cell, we implement a fully differential three-stage VGA with dc-offset cancellation. This three-stage VGA is fabricated in a 0.13-mu m CMOS technology with a core area of 0.1 mm(2). The measurement result shows the proposed dB-linear VGA presents gain-tuning range from -21 dB to 20 dB with dB-linear error of about 0.6 dB. At the maximum gain setting, an output P-1dB of -12 dBm and a noise figure of 27 are measured. The -3-dB bandwidth of the VGA is 580 MHz, and the core circuit consumes about 4.15 mA from a single 1.2-V supply.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an accurate analog decibel linear control circuit for variable gain amplifiers (VGAs). The proposed circuit features simple and effective dB-linear control for current steering VGAs. A novel temperature compensation circuit is also proposed for this VGA. Based on the proposed circuit design techniques, a wideband single stage VGA with accurate analog dB-linear gain control and temperature compensation is realized in Tower Jazz 0.18 μm SiGe BiCMOS technology. The measurement result shows the proposed VGA S 21 gain is tunable from −50 to +20 dB with a −3 dB bandwidth of about 4.6 GHz. The measured IIP3 is from −29 to −8 dBm for maximum and minimum gain respectively and dissipates about 11 mA current from a single 1.8 V supply. The measured noise figure at maximum gain is about 8.5 dB when matched to 50 Ω and the VGA performance is insensitive to temperature variation when measured from −40 to +80 °C.

Abstract:This paper presents recent design techniques and performance tradeoffs for wideband variable gain amplifiers (VGA). A VGA design with reduced bandwidth variation over the entire gain control range is proposed and the incorporating design techniques are explained along with good simulation performance. The proposed five-stage VGA is designed in a commercial 0.18µm SiGe BiCMOS technology achieving a variable gain range from −47.3 to 27.3-dB, a 3-dB bandwidth better than 1.7-GHz, both input and output return losses greater than 10 dB, consuming 23.4mW using 1.8V supply voltage over the entire gain control range, and has a core circuit area of 240µm × 50µm.

Abstract:We present in this paper a novel accurate decibel linear control circuit topology for variable gain amplifiers. According to our knowledge, the proposed linear-in-dB control circuit features the simplest control mechanism and topology for current summing or current steering VGAs to date. Based on the proposed circuit topology, a wideband variable gain amplifier with accurate linear-in-dB gain variation is implemented in Tower Jazz 0.18μm SiGe BiCMOS technology. The simulation shows the designed wideband VGA operates up to 5.2GHz with a linear-in-decibel gain ranging from -50dB to +20dB. The VGA possesses nearly constant bandwidth over the gain variation range and dissipates about 6mA current from a single 1.8V supply. The simulated noise figure at maximum gain is less than 6.5dB when matched to 50Ω and the chip layout area is less than 0.3mm excluding pads.

Abstract:This paper presents a five-stage wideband digital controlled variable gain amplifier (DVGA). A bandwidth extended technique is proposed in this design to enhance gain flatness and enlarge gain range in high operating frequency. DC offset cancellation in this design helps to enhance the performance of proposed DVGA. The design is simulated using a commercial 0.18μm SiGe BiCMOS technology. The DVGA has a simulated gain range of 64.7 dB with a 3-dB bandwidth from 3 MHz to 3.55 GHz, an output 1-dB gain compression point better than -5.2 dBm, an input return loss better than 11.9 dB, an output return loss better than 18 dB, and a dc power consumption for core DVGA circuit of 3.7 mW from a 1.8-V supply.

Abstract:A wideband variable gain amplifier (VGA) implemented in 0.13 μm CMOS technology is presented. To optimize noise performance, an active feedback amplifier with 15 dB fixed gain is put in the front, followed by modified Cherry—Hooper amplifiers in cascade providing variable gain, which adopt dual loop feedback for bandwidth extension. Negative capacitive neutralization and capacitive source degeneration are employed for Miller effect compensation and DC offset cancellation, respectively. Measurement results show that the proposed VGA achieves a 35 dB gain tuning range with an upper 3-dB bandwidth larger than 3 GHz and the input 1 dB compression point of −29 dBm at the lowest gain state, while the minimum noise figure is 9 dB at the highest gain state. The core VGA (without test buffer) consumes 32 mW from 1.2 V power supply and occupies 0.48 mm2 area.

Abstract:A CMOS novel variable gain amplifier (VGA) suitable for wireless broadband receiver with superheterodyne architecture was presented. The prototype chip was implemented by TSMC 0.18 μm technology. Simulations and measurements show that the VGA's gain control range is -28-42 dB; the operation frequency is up to 600 MHz; the minimum noise figure is 7.65 dB, and the IIP3 at the minimum gain setting is 20 dBm. The VGA dissipates 12 mA under a single 3 V power supply.

Abstract:A CMOS variable gain amplifier (VGA) that adopts a novel exponential gain approximation is presented. No additional exponential gain control circuit is required in the proposed VGA used in a direct conversion receiver. A wide gain control voltage from 0.4 to 1.8 V and a high linearity performance are achieved. The three-stage VGA with automatic gain control (AGC) and DC offset cancellation (DCOC) is fabricated in a 0.18-μm CMOS technology and shows a linear gain range of more than 58-dB with a linearity error less than ±1 dB. The 3-dB bandwidth is over 8 MHz at all gain settings. The measured input-referred third intercept point (IIP3) of the proposed VGA varies from −18.1 to 13.5 dBm, and the measured noise figure varies from 27 to 65 dB at a frequency of 1 MHz. The dynamic range of the closed-loop AGC exceeds 56 dB, where the output signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) reaches 20 dB. The whole circuit, occupying 0.3 mm2 of chip area, dissipates less than 3.7 mA from a 1.8-V supply.

Abstract:This paper presents a wideband digitally controlled variable gain amplifier (VGA) with a reconfigurable gain tuning range and gain step in a 65 nm CMOS process. A unique asymmetric capacitor-based reconfigurable technique is proposed to extend the gain tuning range and realize gain step reconfiguration. An active neutralization topology based on a stackless transistor is utilized to compensate for the additional phase shift introduced by the gain tuning. Moreover, a current-type digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is also integrated for easier precise gain control. With the asymmetric capacitor varying from 1000 fF to 200 fF with a step of 400 fF, the proposed VGA achieves a 12.2/9.2/6.1 dB gain tuning range with a 0.4/0.3/0.2 dB gain resolution, respectively. At the maximum gain tuning range mode, the measured minimum root-mean-square (RMS) phase error is 1.7° at 23.4 GHz. At the finest gain step control mode, the RMS phase error measured across 20–30 GHz is lower than 1.9°. The tested result also shows the proposed VGA achieves a peak gain of 13 dB with a 3 dB bandwidth of 21.4–29 GHz, and the output 1 dB compression point (OP1dB) is up to 8.6 dBm at 25 GHz.

Abstract:This paper presents a low-voltage low-power variable gain amplifier,which is applied in the automatic gain control loop of a super heterodyne receiver.Six stages are cascaded to provide an 81dB digitally controlled gain range in a 3dB step.The gain step error is less than 0.5dB.It operates at an intermediate frequency of300kHz,and the power consumption is 1.35mW from a 1.8V supply.The prototype chip is implemented in a TSMC's 0.18μm 1P6M CMOS process and occupies approximately 0.24mm2.It is very suitable for portable wireless communication systems.The measurement results agree well with the system requirements.

Abstract:This paper presents a kind of Automatic Gain Control (AGC)circuits which can be used in speech signal acquisition system,it has high gain range,low noise and high linearity.The proposed AGC is based on feedback topologies and the gain is digital controlled.The design indexes are 1 V supply voltage,0~40 dB gain range,2 dB gain step,8 kHz bandwidth.Aπ-type resistors network is used in the Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA)as the passive feedback device to realize gain linearity in decibels and increase the gain accuracy.The hysteresis comparator eliminate the chattering effects when the output signal of Peak Detector changes rapidly around the threshold.The design is implemented in 0.18μm CMOS and occupies an active area of 0.41 mm2 .The power consumption of AGC is about 0.17 mW at 1 V supply voltage.The gain of AGC loop ranges from 0 dB to 40.2 dB in 2 dB step with gain error not more than 0.2 dB.The total harmonic distortion (THD)is below-70 dB over the audio frequencies at 1 kHz,0.4-Vpp differential output.The integrated noise in the audio range (20 Hz~20 kHz)is less than 5μVRMS when the gain of PGA is set at 0 dB.

Abstract:Automatic gain control technology is usually adopted to solve the problem of large dynamic range of input signals Aiming at the challenges existing in digital automatic gain control (DAGC) algorithm, this paper proposes an approximate method based on logarithmic space, and solves the problem of circuit complexity and low dynamic range in traditional DAGC algorithm with the employment of a lookup table. The novel algorithm can change gains of multiple modules on the receiving path at one time, and realize a large dynamic gain control range of 76dB without sacrificing the convergence speed and accuracy. The simulation results show that this new type of DAGC can adjust the overall gain of the receiver rapidly and efficiently according to different input signal amplitudes, and has good engineering practicability with the advantage of simplified circuit.

Abstract:A new circuit architecture for broadband digitally controlled variable gain amplifier (VGA) is introduced in this paper. The gain of the VGA is controlled precisely by using a resistor ladder attenuator and a closed-loop fine gain control block together. The bandwidth of the VGA is extended by applying a compensation technique in the fine gain control block. Implemented in 0.13-μm CMOS technology, the proposed VGA demonstrates a decibel-linear gain range of 24 dB (0–24 dB) with a gain step of 0.1 dB, a gain error <0.08 dB, a maximum input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) of 22.8 dBm, and a 3-dB bandwidth of 600 MHz.

Abstract:A wideband variable gain amplifier which provides 40dB dynamic gain range using dual-loop feedback Cherry-Hooper topology is presented. A modified negative capacitive neutralization technique is proposed to improve the frequency response with a reasonable cost of power consumption. This VGA is implemented in SMIC 0.13μm 1P8M CMOS technology, and occupies 0.3 mm 2 active area. The measurement results show that its -3dB bandwidth is from 800MHz to 3GHz. It consumes 21.6 mW at 1.2V power supply. The maximum input P 1dB with a preceding LNA is -27dBm at an overall gain of -0.5dB. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:A wideband CMOS variable gain amplifier with temperature compensation is presented.The VGA core consists of three cascading variable gain cells based on modified Cherry-Hooper structure.The gain of VGA is temperature-compensated by a bias circuit and a gain control circuit with enhanced and programmable temperature coefficient.Fabricated in SMIC 0.13 μm CMOS process,the measurement results show that the VGA provides a dynamic gain range of-13~27 dB and with temperature compensation,the variation range of its gain is less than 3 dB at the temperature range of 0~75°C under the same gain control voltage.The VGA has a 3 dB bandwidth of 0.8~3 GHz,and input P1 dB of-51~21 dBm while consuming 21.6 mW from a 1.2 V supply voltage.
