Abstract:In practical optimization problems, it is often desired that a solution is not only of high performance, but also of high robustness, for example, robust to fabrication tolerances. The robust optimal design problem is studied under a standard crowding differential evolution framework in this paper, where the robustness of a solution is indicated by the objective in the worst case of this solution. To evaluate the robust objective function, a simple evolutionary strategy is used, other than the traditional Monte-Carlo simulation. Numerical results indicate that the proposed method can provide faster convergence rate and more accurate solution than Monte-Carlo simulation. This method is then applied to the practical holographic grating design, and achieves satisfactory optimization results.
Evolutionary Algorithm of Port Based Location Routing Problem

Abstract:Location routing problem (LRP) is a significant subject in logistics systems, and genetic algorithm can obtain the near optimum solutions of large scale nonlinear mixed integer programming models which are NP-hard in nature. In the process of algorithm design, two-dimensional chromosomes that satisfy constraints automatically and their corresponding genetic arithmetic operators are designed, such as selection, crossover, mutation of seeds, re-insert and so on. Three-layer process of genetic evolution is conducted and examined by a group of random experiments. This paper compares the precision, effectiveness and applicable scope between the proposed algorithm and current optimizing software. With increase number of variables and constrains, computing time and iterations of genetic algorithm increase almost linearly, while that of the current software LINGO present NP-hard. Results show the proposed genetic algorithm is effective and efficient in solving the LRP problem especially of large scale.
Degree Preserving Based Crossover For Constrained Optimization Problems

Abstract:Real-coded genetic algorithms (RCGAs) have been effectively used to solve constrained optimization problems (COPs). However, the crossover operators do not have mechanisms to handle constraints and there is no guarantee that if the parents satisfy some constraints the offspring will satisfy them as well. Degree preserving based crossover operators are proposed to increase the probability of constructing feasible offspring and preserve the generated partial solutions which satisfy some constraints. A new concept of the feasibility degree (FD) of the building blocks of feasible solutions (BBFSs) based on the schema theorem and building block hypothesis is also proposed to measure the probability of an individual which contains the BBFS being a feasible solution. Therefore, feasible offspring can be constructed by mixing the building blocks of feasible solutions and the generated partial solutions which satisfy some constraints can be preserved. The theoretical validity of the new crossover operators is proved by the schema theorem and the mixing ladder climbing model. Finally, the proposed crossover operators were tested with benchmark problems and the results proved the efficiency of the operators.

Abstract:Interest in multimodal function optimization is expanding rapidly since real-world optimization problems often require location of multiple optima in a search space. In this paper, we propose a novel genetic algorithm which combines crowding and clustering for multimodal function optimization, and analyze convergence properties of the algorithm. The crowding clustering genetic algorithm employs standard crowding strategy to form multiple niches and clustering operation to eliminate genetic drift. Numerical experiments on standard test functions indicate that crowding clustering genetic algorithm is superior to both standard crowding and deterministic crowding in quantity, quality and precision of multi-optimum search. The proposed algorithm is applied to the practical optimal design of varied-line-spacing holographic grating and achieves satisfactory results.
Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm Based on Crowding Distance Sorting and Its Application

Abstract:Aiming at shortcomings in global searching capacity and diversified Pareto set existing in the traditional multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithms,a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on crowding distance sorting was proposed.With the elitism strategy,the shrink of the external population and update of the global optimum were achieved based on individuals' crowding distance sorting in descending order.A small ratio mutation was introduced to the inner swarm to enhance the global searching capacity of the algorithm.And the number of Pareto optimal solutions could be controlled,the convergence and diversity of Pareto optimal set could be guaranteed as well.Effectiveness of the algorithm with two or three objectives was proved by the optimization of elevator traction performances.Comparison results among cases with different scales illustrated that this algorithm outperformed Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2(SPEA2) in the convergence and diversity characteristics of Pareto optimal front with shorter computation time,higher efficiency and robustness.

Abstract:Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) does well in dealing with multi-objective problems. When evaluating validity of an algorithm for multi-objective problems, two kinds of indices are often considered simultaneously, i.e. the convergence to Pareto Front and the distribution characteristic. The crowding distance in the standard NSGA-II has the property that solutions within a cubic have the same crowding distance, which has no contribution to the convergence of the algorithm. Actually the closer to the Pareto Front a solution is, the higher priority it should have. In the paper, the crowding distance is redefined while keeping almost all the advantages of the original one. Moreover, the speed of converging to the Pareto Front is faster. Finally, the improvement is proved to be effective by applying it to solve nine Benchmark problems.

Abstract:Quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for a cognitive mesh network (CMN) with heterogeneous services has become a challenging area of research in recent days. Considering both real-time (RT) and non-real-time (NRT) traffic in a multihop CMN, [1] studied cross-layer resource management, including joint access control, route selection, and resource allocation. Due to the complexity of the formulated resource allocation problems, which are mixed-integer non-linear programming, a low-complexity yet efficient algorithm was proposed there to approximately solve the formulated optimization problems. In contrast, in this work, we present an application of genetic algorithm (GA) to re-address the hard resource allocation problems studied in [1]. Novel initialization, selection, crossover, and mutation operations are designed such that solutions with enough randomness can be generated and converge with as less number of attempts as possible, thus improving the efficiency of the algorithm effectively. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the newly proposed GA-based algorithm. Furthermore, by comparing the performance of the newly proposed algorithm with the one proposed in [1], more insights have been obtained in terms of the tradeoff among QoS provisioning for RT traffic, throughput maximization for NRT traffic, and time complexity of an algorithm for resource allocation in a multihop network such as CMN.

Abstract:To solve the problems such as low global search capability and insufficient diversity of Pareto optimal set existed in MOPSO, a multiobjective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on crowding distance sorting is proposed. An external population is preserved to store the nondominated individuals during the evolution process. The shrink of the external population is achieved based on individuals' crowding distance sorting by descending order, which deleting the redundant individuals in the crowding area. An individual with relatively big crowding distance is selected as the global best to lead the particles evolving to the disperse region. The dominant relation between individuals is compared with the constraint Pareto dominance to embody the constraints without external parameters. The experiments of six standard unconstraint test problems illustrate that the new algorithm is competitive with NSGA-II and SPEA2 in terms of converging to the true Pareto front and maintaining the diversity of the population. The effectiveness of the algorithm for constraint problems is proved by solving three constraint test problems. Moreover, the best value ranges of mutation rate and inertia weight are analyzed by numerical experiments to guarantee the steady convergence of the algorithm.

Abstract:Many multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have been successful in approximating the Pareto Front. However, well-distributed solutions in the objective and decision spaces are still required in many real-life applications. In this paper, a novel MOEA is proposed to this problem. Distinct from other MOEAs, the proposed algorithm suggests a framework, which includes two crowding estimation methods, multiple selection methods for mating and search strategies for variation, to improve the MOEA' s searching ability, and the diversity of its solutions. The algorithm emphasizes the importance of using the decision space and the objective space diversities. The objective space crowding and decision space crowding distances are designed using different ideas. To produce new individuals, three different types of mating selections and their respective search strategies are constructed for the main population and the two sparse populations, with the help of the two crowding measurements. Finally, based on the experimental tests on 17 unconstrained multi-objective optimization problems, the proposed algorithm is demonstrated to have better results compared to several state-of-the-art MOEAs. A detailed analysis on the effectiveness and robustness of the framework is also presented.

Abstract:The problem of maximum multi-reliabilities is studied aiming to the network structures. Firstly, the optimum model of network structures based on random and fuzzy chances constrained is given. The solution strategy of genetic-ant colonies algorithm with stochastic simulation and fuzzy simulated is studied, and the detailed steps of hybrid intelligence are given based on stochastic simulation and fuzzy simulation. At last, an instance is given, multi-objects model with chance constrained programming is provided, the model is solved by genetic-anti colonies algorithm. The feasibility of hybrid intelligence of genetic algorithm and ant colonies with stochastic simulation and fuzzy simulated is verified by the result of calculation.
Robust Optimization-Based Genetic Algorithm for Project Scheduling with Stochastic Activity Durations

Abstract:The deterministic resource-constrained project scheduling problem has been widely studied. A key assumption in this basic problem is that the baseline schedule will be performed as planned. Since uncertainties prevail in the real world, a robust schedule is more valuable than an ideal but impractical schedule. A robust optimization model is established for project scheduling with stochastic activity durations to improve the schedule robustness. A robust optimization-based genetic algorithm is proposed to generate stable schedules which are insensitive to activity duration uncertainties. Various genetic operators and parameter values are tested on a large set of benchmark instances.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of two dimensional irregular parts packing, a new optimal packing algorithm was proposed.In order to enhance the operation speed of the algorithm,the algorithm to calculate the least surrounding boxes was improved.In order to enhance the global convergence performance of the algorithm,the selection operator was improved by using elitist preservation strategy.In order to enhance the precision of the algorithm,the decoding algorithm was improved by using the Height Adjustment algorithm.Solutions of the numerical example showed the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Design intelligence, namely, artificial intelligence to solve creative problems and produce creative ideas, has improved rapidly with the new generation artificial intelligence. However, existing methods are more skillful in learning from data and have limitations in creating original ideas different from the training data. Crowdsourcing offers a promising method to produce creative designs by combining human inspiration and machines’ computational ability. We propose a crowdsourcing intelligent design method called ‘flexible crowdsourcing design’. Design ideas produced through crowdsourcing design can be unreliable and inconsistent because they rely solely on selection among participants’ submissions of ideas. In contrast, the flexible crowdsourcing design method employs a cultivation procedure that integrates the ideas from crowd participants and cultivates these ideas to improve design quality at the same time. We introduce a series of studies to show how flexible crowdsourcing design can produce original design ideas consistently. Specifically, we will describe the typical procedure of flexible crowdsourcing design, the refined crowdsourcing tasks, the factors that affect the idea development process, the method for calculating idea development potential, and two applications of the flexible crowdsourcing design method. Finally, it summarizes the design capabilities enabled by crowdsourcing intelligent design. This method enhances the performance of crowdsourcing design and supports the development of design intelligence.
A Crowding Distance That Provably Solves the Difficulties of the NSGA-II in Many-Objective Optimization

Abstract:Recent theoretical works have shown that the NSGA-II can have enormous difficulties to solve problems with more than two objectives. In contrast, algorithms like the NSGA-III or SMS-EMOA, differing from the NSGA-II only in the secondary selection criterion, provably perform well in these situations. To remedy this shortcoming of the NSGA-II, but at the same time keep the advantages of the widely accepted crowding distance, we use the insights of these previous work to define a variant of the crowding distance, called truthful crowding distance. Different from the classic crowding distance, it has for any number of objectives the desirable property that a small crowding distance value indicates that some other solution has a similar objective vector. Building on this property, we conduct mathematical runtime analyses for the NSGA-II with truthful crowding distance. We show that this algorithm can solve the many-objective versions of the OneMinMax, COCZ, LOTZ, and OJZJ$_k$ problems in the same (polynomial) asymptotic runtimes as the NSGA-III and the SMS-EMOA. This contrasts the exponential lower bounds previously shown for the classic NSGA-II. For the bi-objective versions of these problems, our NSGA-II has a similar performance as the classic NSGA-II, gaining however from smaller admissible population sizes. For the bi-objective OneMinMax problem, we also observe a (minimally) better performance in approximating the Pareto front. These results suggest that our truthful version of the NSGA-II has the same good performance as the classic NSGA-II in two objectives, but can resolve the drastic problems in more than two objectives.

Abstract:For the application of the standard genetic algorithm in illustration art design, there are still problems such as low search efficiency and high complexity. This paper proposes an illustration art design model based on operator and clustering optimization genetic algorithm. First, during the operation of the genetic algorithm, the values of the crossover probability and the mutation probability are dynamically adjusted according to the characteristics of the population to improve the search efficiency of the algorithm, then the k-medoids algorithm is introduced to optimize the clustering of the genetic algorithm, and a cost function is used to carry out and evaluate the quality of clustering to optimize the complexity of the original algorithm. In addition, a multiobjective optimization genetic algorithm with complex constraints based on group classification is proposed. This algorithm focuses on the problem of group diversity and uses k-means cluster analysis operation to solve the problem of group diversity. The algorithm divides the entire group into four subgroups and assigns appropriate fitness values to reflect the optimal preservation strategy. A large number of computer simulation calculations show that the algorithm can obtain a widely distributed and uniform Pareto optimal solution, the evolution speed is fast, usually only a few iterations can achieve a good optimization effect, and finally the improved genetic algorithm is used to design the random illustration art. The example simulation shows that the improved algorithm proposed in this paper can achieve higher artistic and innovative illustration art design.

Abstract:We propose an automatic crowd control framework based on multi-objective optimisation of strategy space using genetic programming. In particular, based on the sensed local crowd densities at different segments, our framework is capable of generating control strategies that guide the individuals on when and where to slow down for optimal overall crowd flow in realtime, quantitatively measured by multiple objectives such as shorter travel time and less congestion along the path. The resulting Pareto-front allows selection of resilient and efficient crowd control strategies in different situations. We first chose a benchmark scenario as used in [1] to test the proposed method. Results show that our method is capable of finding control strategies that are not only quantitatively measured better, but also well aligned with domain experts' recommendations on effective crowd control such as "slower is faster" and "asymmetric control". We further applied the proposed framework in actual event planning with approximately 400 participants navigating through a multi-story building. In comparison with the baseline crowd models that do no employ control strategies or just use some hard-coded rules, the proposed framework achieves a shorter travel time and a significantly lower (20%) congestion along critical segments of the path. Abstract:This paper proposes a new evolutionary algorithm-based methodology for optimal crowd evacuation planning. In the proposed methodology, a heuristic-based evacuation scheme is firstly introduced. The key idea is to divide the region into a set of sub-regions and use a heuristic rule to dynamically recommend an exit to agents in each sub-region. Then, an evolutionary framework based on the Cartesian Genetic Programming algorithm and an agent-based crowd simulation model is developed to search for the optimal heuristic rule. By considering dynamic environment features to construct the heuristic rule and using multiple scenarios for training, the proposed methodology aims to find generic and efficient heuristic rules that perform well on different scenarios. The proposed methodology is applied to guide people's evacuation behaviors in six different scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that the heuristic rule offered by the proposed method is effective to reduce the crowd evacuation time on different scenarios.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms built on Pareto-dominance suffer from a loss of selection pressure as the number of objectives increases and the probability of finding non-dominated solutions in the population decreases. Furthermore, Pareto-dominance is computationally expensive because of the pairwise comparisons necessary to rank the individuals of a population. The paper introduces a new genetic algorithm for multi-objective optimization based on Apparent Front Ranking and crowding distance, called Controlled Apparent Front Zones Genetic Algorithm (CAFZGA). To avoid pairwise comparisons, CAFZGA first generates the main Apparent Front Boundary (AFB) with the help of a small set of support vectors and creates secondary AFBs as shifted versions of the main AFB. The space of objectives is divided into zones by the AFBs. The zones play a similar role in CAFZGA as the non-dominated fronts do in the Controlled Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm CNSGA-II. The zone ranking becomes the main criterion in differentiating individuals, with crowding distance being the tiebreak criterion. The method is shown to be extremely flexible because the AFBs are adjusted for each generation. Computationally, CAFZGA is more efficient than GAs using Pareto-dominance because the set of support vectors for generating the AFBs is significantly smaller than the population. CAFZGA is applied to the problem of optimizing the configuration of a Grid ALU Processor (GAP) and is shown to be competitive and sometimes even better than well-established GAs like CNSGA-II and Fuzzy-Dominance-Driven Genetic Algorithm FDD-GA.

Abstract:This paper proposes an evolutionary algorithm with clustering-based selection strategies to deal with multi-objective optimization problems. In the proposed algorithm, two clustering based selection strategies, named local indicator selection and local crowding selection, have been devised to appropriately search the space. The local indicator selection is developed to select diverse and well-converged individuals for mating while the local crowding selection strategy is designed to maintain a set of evenly distributed individuals on the Pareto front for next generation of evolution. The proposed method is further enhanced by a clustering based crowding degree strategy, which is introduced to extract a uniformly distributed and convergent solutions as the final output. The performance of proposed algorithm has been evaluated on 31 benchmark problems and compared with related methods. The results clearly show the merits of proposed strategies and the proposed method could significantly outperform related methods to be compared.
