Abstract:This paper is devoted to a diachronic research on the politeness phenomena in ancient China, based on the corpus from one of the Chinese literary masterpieces, A Dream of Red Mansions. The paper re-examines FTA and revisits the three factors influencing people's choice of strategies in the contexts of ancient China: social distance, power relations, and absolute ranking of certain impositions, pointing out that: 1.) people's power relations usually derives from their social distance; 2.) power in ancient China may have different categories: absolute power, human-relation power, hierarchy power and hierarchy human-relation power; and 3.) in the hierarchy and so-called "seeking-agreement" society, many speech acts considered to be threatening one's face by Brown & Levinson actually threaten no one's face in ancient China. At last, the paper concludes five politeness principles in ancient China.

Communist Revolution as the Origin of the Capitalism in the Red China: The Political Economy of the Private Economy in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:This research explores the political factors that determined the spatial variations of the private economic development of Zhejiang province in China after 1949. I argue that even in an authoritarian country, when political elites are divided into competing groups and there are fierce political struggles between them, this opens the opportunity to potential private entrepreneurs because certain elite groups may provide protection, in order to win over entrepreneurs’ support and gain the upper hand in the political competition. My hypothesis is that if guerrilla forces were strong in a particular locality prior to 1949 (here I am referring to a county), then after 1949 the local cadre group, the weak side in the post-1949 strife between the elites, had greater incentives and capabilities to protect and promote private economy than their counterparts in the places where the guerrilla forces were weak before 1949. The empirical evidence strongly supports the hypothesis. The theoretical framework developed here can be effectively applied to other provinces in China, revealing similar patterns of the interrelation between local cadres and private entrepreneurs.

Abstract:There is no doubt that the political economy of contemporary China has received significant attention, both in academic disciplines and in the real world. The role of the state in the economy and the relations between government and business actors have always been central concerns of classic social science works about China. There are, however, several crucial challenges in studying this topic. The complicated landscape of a multilayered, fragmented Chinese state and numerous state-owned, private, foreign, or mixed-type businesses has made it difficult to tease out their interactions and establish a comprehensive theoretical model. The fast-changing nature of state–market relations and their vast subnational and sectoral variation has often prevented scholars from generalizing those lessons beyond the case or issue area. Yet, among all these, the most daunting challenge is: How can studies of a particularly interesting phenomenon in China’s political economy contribute to broader discussions of state–society relations, regime durability, and state-led development without losing respectable country expertise?

Abstract:Benoit Vermander, Chine brune ou Chine verte? Les dilemmes de l'Etat-Parti, (Brown or Green ? The Dilemmas of the Party-State) Paris, Les Presses de Sciences Po, 2007, 212 pp.Three decades after its brilliantly successful conversion to market economy, and seven years after its entry into the World Trade Organisation, is now confronted with intermeshed social and environmental threats that could well short-circuit a portion of its patiently built achievements. The leadership's decisions in the next few years could as easily plunge into a structural crisis as impart a new dynamism, says Benoit Vermander. China, he says, is caught between two paradigms: brown China and green China. The first term stands for a strategy of social control, pursuit of high growth rates whatever the social and ecological cost, and immediate maximisation on the international arena of the advantages linked to the country's rise. The second term denotes political liberalisation and promotion of sustainable as well as international cooperation.Naturally, these options are poles apart, two ideal types that delimit the area of possibilities as much as they define the government's plans. Equally, there can be a whole range of possible choices in between. But these are difficult choices for the authorities, who have to find an optimum formula between internal tensions and external constraints, or in other words simultaneously (and ideally) pursue harmonious society (retermed scientific development since 2007) at home and (or development) internationally. On this choice depends China's future, but also that of the world, given the Middle Kingdom's central role on the global arena.Internal tensions stem notably from rising inequality and ecological crisis. A 2006 report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said 10 percent of the richest families in held nearly half (45 percent) of private wealth, while the poorest 10 percent held a mere 2 percent. In 2005, the richest decile of the population enjoyed incomes 12 times those of the poorest decile. In addition to these inequalities, of a magnitude comparable to those in Latin America, there are a number of problems linked to land distribution, health, edumajor cation, and working conditions (4,700 deaths in mines every year). As for ecological problems, they affect all strata and all milieus (water, air, and soil). Some figures are worth noting: each year outside air pollution causes between 350,000 and 400,000 deaths, polluted water claims 60,000 lives, and by 2020 there will be some 20 million ecological refugees. is home to five of the world's most polluted cities, 70 to 80 percent of cancer cases diagnosed in Beijing are linked to the environment, and the capital's water table has fallen by 37 metres in 40 years. And there were 161 serious ecological accidents in 2006. The list goes on.It thus comes as no surprise to learn that in 2005 there were 87,000 protests involving more than 100 people, of which 50,000 were over pollution. Along with these internal problems are those of managing economic might on the international scene. How to ease several years of uninterrupted double-digit growth rates while keeping weaknesses at bay, and without engaging in potentially ruinous trade conflicts or strategic rivalries? The Chinese doctrine is expressed in two words: rise or development (this second formulation being deemed less aggressive). Through this expression popularised in 2003, the authorities were signalling the following action guidelines: identifying Chinese interests as being part of those of developing countries (at least in precept), holding fast to the non-interference principle, proclaiming the peaceful character of Chinese culture, and supporting multilateralism as a means of repelling antagonism to China's rise. …

Abstract:Democracy has two dimensions: as an idea and as an institution.The former refers to democratismbased on egalitarianism,while the key to the latter is election.Democracy as an institution will not necessarily encounter real difficulties in practice in the future.But egalitarianism is antithetical to Chinese elitist tradition and so is unlikely to be accepted by Chinese people.If the Western socio-economic crises persist,democracy,once credited with the "end of history,"will probably face its first challenge in China.

Abstract:A great challenge for capitalist development under authoritarian regimes is to effectively constrain predatory behavior. Beyond existing frameworks of the dictator’s time horizon and institutionalized power sharing, we introduce an alternative perspective - elite cleavage. We argue that the systematic vulnerability of marginalized local cadres motivated them to ally with grassroots constituents and protect local economic interests in order to increase the odds of political survival. Difference-in-differences analysis of counties in two Chinese provinces shows that the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution created a moment of political decentralization which enabled marginalized local elites to protect local entrepreneurs against national-level radical policies, resulting in much more vibrant private economic activities in some regions. Further empirical evidence shows that elite cleavages formed in the 1940s had a long-lasting impact on economic performance in the reform era.

Abstract:I begin by chronicling the introduction of Marx’s philosophy into China, its influence on a few individuals including Mao Zedong, and the remarkably rapid rise of Marxism, or Marxism/Leninism, as the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party and eventually of the government after the defeat of the Guomintang. I then devote a comparatively brief section to Mao’s thought and leap forward, so to speak, to the ideological situation of the present as I see it, focusing on the three issues of religion, the ‘free market’, and international relations. There are very obvious tensions involved in the whole idea of Communism or Marxism with Chinese characteristics. I analyze them as well, I hope, as an outsider is able to do. But it seems clear to me that there are few if any ‘insiders’ who are able fully to resolve the tensions, either. Meanwhile, the Communist Party flag, featuring the hammer and sickle, flies proudly throughout the country.
The Relevance of “Red Culture” in Contemporary China

Abstract:This paper investigates “red culture” in three ways—its sources, representations, and relevance in the present era. It looks into the contexts for the emergence and evolution of “red culture” in the journey of democratic revolution, socialist revolution and development, and reform and opening-up in China. “Red culture” consists of “red legacies” and “red spirit” that ha ve developed over the course of China’s revolution, construction, and reform under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to achieve national independence, economic growth, cultural prosperity, and national rejuvenation. It is represented by historical sites and a constellation of spirit that is the CPC’s source of strength. “Red culture” helps the Chinese people raise awareness of protection and promotion of fine traditional Chinese culture while guarding against cultural imperialism in a globalized world. It also gives momentum for building a stronger cultural confidence and developing a rich, prosperous socialist culture with Chinese characteristics.

Red books are invaluable resources for learning about China's revolutionary past. They are essential for comprehending both the Chinese people's hardships and the magnificent history of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Promoting these resources to a larger readership, particularly those reading abroad, is difficult. A fresh perspective could be offered by Chinese-English red book companion reading in the contemporary globalization scenario. Readers can learn more about the background, causes, and consequences of historical events by combining Chinese-English red books, which encourages cross-cultural dialogue and understanding. The application, prospects, and importance of the Chinese-English red book reading accompaniment will all be examined in this essay. Reading Chinese-English red books gives international readers a richer grasp of Chinese revolutionary history and also helps Chinese readers understand English elements. Readers can have a more accurate understanding and foster cross-cultural communication and comprehension by comparing Chinese and English content.
