Intellectual Property Right Protection and North-South Technology Diffusion

Abstract:This paper sets up a two-stage game model taking the effects of intellectual property right protection on entry strategies of multinationals into account to analyze the policy choice of IPR protection for South countries aiming at obtaining more technology diffusion. It is found that the South country should provide proper IPR protection that only enough to attract FDI. Any measures of strengthening the IPR protection will lead to higher cost of the host firms, lower the profit of the host firms and consumer surplus. Moreover, by analyzing the factors influencing IPR protection, we found that we could attract FDI into industries in which more spillovers can be expected by combination of Tariff Tax and IPR protection。
