Abstract:Chromite deposits in China are generally medium-small sized podiform ones and unevenly distributed with poor exploratioin and utilization condition.The podiform chromote deposits are composed of both high Cr and High Al ores with different ore-forming mechanism.Backarc and forearc basin,island arc and middle ocean ridge rige and transform fault are possibly favorable settings for podiform chromite formation.More and More scholars consider that podiform chromite is formed in deep mantle.Chromite is a strategic mineral resource and is in shortage in China and almost entirely imported.Therefore prospecting of blind chromite deposits in the known chromite ore-forming belts should be strengthened.

Abstract:It is the periodical research on "the special subject of chemical industry and salt mineral resources" of the Consulting Project "powerful nation strategy of mineral resources" from the Chinese Academy of Engineering,referring to the powerful nation strategy of 11 mineral,including potassium,phosphorus,sulfur,lithium,rubidium,cesium,graphite,boron,magnesium,fluorite and barite.Compared with the classic powerful state of mineral resources in the world,it exists a big gap in the acquisition ability of resource at home and abroad,the extension of industrial chain,the industrial concentration degree,the participation degree of the international pricing on the mineral production in China.Considering the problem of industry development at present stage in China and the gap with the mineral resource powerful state in the world,it puts the way of building the mineral resource powerful state,and gives the preliminary comment and suggestion,referring to the management mechanism system,the financial policy,the talent team,the international cooperation.In the next 10 years,it is different from the decreasing trend of Bulk mineral,the demand of chemical industry and salt mineral resource is increasing obviously and keeping operating in the high level.In addition to the implement of "Belt and Road Initiative" strategy,the development of chemical industry and salt mineral resources is faced with the new opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Critical mineral resources refer to strategic mineral resources that are necessary for the sustainable development of modern society at present and near future but have high risks in terms of stable supply, mainly including the so-called “three rare metals”（rare earth elements, rare metals, rare dispersed metals）, and other strategic metals, such as chromium, manganese,titanium, cobalt, nickel, and vanadium, as well as strategic non-metallic minerals, such as crystalline graphite, fluorite, talc, and boron.Qinghai Province is rich in critical metal deposits with a variety of ore deposit types and potential large resource reserves. In future study, it should focus on the fundamental geological theory of super-enrichment of the critical metals and efficient and modern technology for mineral exploration, including the following major tasks: to unravel the ore-forming controlling factors, ore formation regulations, the behavior of critical metals and their enrichment mechanisms; to investigate the occurrence state of rare metal elements, improve the utilization rate and reduce environmental pollution, and improve the level of exploration. Based on the situation of critical mineral resources in China and abroad, in this paper it puts forward some thoughts and suggestions on comprehensively improving the management, exploration, development and utilization level of critical mineral resources in Qinghai Province to secure the safety of mineral resources.

Abstract:<p>China is located at the convergence zone of the Paleo-Asian metallogenic domain, East Pacific margin metallogenic domain, and Tethyan metallogenic domain. Theoretically, this feature favor metallogenic conditions, which suggest an abundance of mineral resources. Today, the rapid development of urbanization and industrialization has triggered a continuously increasing demand for and a large scale consumption of mineral resources. Therefore, in order to satisfy this demand, China has furthered its evaluation of mineral resources potential to help guide future mineral explorations. Based on the innovation of geological theory, prediction and prospecting models, as well as GIS-based comprehensive assessment methods, 25 important mineral resources and key metals have been assessed in China. Herein, we evaluate the national mineral resources assessment study by combining it with metallogenic areas (belts) research. Through our analyses, we identify the potential characteristics of important mineral resources in different metallogenic areas (belts) to enhance the scientific decision-making process for the exploration and deployment of mineral resources in China. We found that the exploration and deployment of bulk minerals such as iron, manganese, and copper are continuously changing. Currently, the eastern region should be the primary focus of deep prospecting, while exploration for copper, lead, and zinc should occur in the central and western regions.</p>

Multi-satge Formation of the Podiform Chromitite

Abstract:Podiform chromitite serves as the main source of chromium and is also the shortage ore species in China;therefore,the discovery of large chromitite deposits has become the first way to solve the long-term dependence on imports.But there is disagreement about the genesis of podiform chromite.With the discovery of many abnormal mantle minerals in podiform chromite and its host mantle peridotite,geologists have rethought the genesis of the podiform chromitite.This paper focuses on the latest achievements and progress in the study of the podiform chromitite both in China and abroad,which include the morphological characteristics of podiform chromitite,output feature,mineral chemistry,the distribution pattern of the platinum group elements(PGE),the UHP minerals in the chromitite,and the host harzburgite evolution.The chromium of podiform chromitite was derived from the incongruent melting of the two types of pyroxene and associated mineral spinel,which might have been formed in an environment of the lower mantle or transition zone.Platinum group element minerals exist as inclusions and fissures in the podiform chromitite,and the content of platinum group elements is related to the S saturation level formation in the process and has multi-phase characteristics.The authors hold that the process of the formation of podiform chromitite consisted of four stages,which were the stage of chromium source derivation,the crystallization stage of spinel and UHP minerals,the chromitite ore-forming stage,and the stage of chromitite seating.It is thought that the characteristics of each stage require further refinement and investigation,and the detailed comparison between different podiform chromitite deposits is necessary.

The Prospects of Chromitite in Ophiolite of Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone, Tibet

Abstract:Podiform chromitite is the main source of chromium, and is a kind of important strategic material of extreme shortage in China;therefore, the study of chromitite and peridotite has become the first way to solve the long-term dependence on imports. In this study, the authors focused on the main ultramafic body and chromitite from Yarlung Zangbo ophiolite belt. On the basis of field geological work, the authors summarized the sequence of ophiolite, mineral composition, geochemistry, Re- Os isotopic composition and other characteristics, so as to discuss the formation of chromite and mantle peridotite. Some conclusions have been reached: (1) The ophiolite in different segments of Yarlung Zangbo suture zone exhibits quite different rock assemblages, with different tectonic evolution backgrounds, which proves the heterogeneity of Tethys evolution; (2) There are two types of high aluminum and high chrome chromitie found in western YZSZ, and the mineral chemical characteristics of chrome spinel have recorded traces of different tectonic settings, mineralogy and geochemistry; (3) The mineralogy and geochemistry of mantle peridotites peridotite and chromite have both the features of deep mantle peridotite and the island arc mantle peridotite, suggesting multi-processes of rock/melt reaction and partial melting;(4) The podiform chromite formation experienced multiple stages, from the early subduction to the mantle transition zone;driven by plume/mantle convection, the materials migrated onto the top of the transition zone, where they condensed and consolidated, and reacted with harzburgite in the emplacement process under a subduction zone environment;(5) The diamond and other UHP minerals extensively exist in all of the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone, with the western part bearing similarity to Luobusha in that they both experienced the same tectonic setting and ore mineralization, thus having potential for further prospecting.

Abstract:As an important metal mineral, manganese is widely used in metallurgy, chemical industry, national defense industry and other fields. Global manganese resources are characterized by extremely uneven distribution, highly concentrated production capacity, and serious separation between supply and demand. China’s manganese resources are characterized by extensive distribution but insufficient reserves, low grade and poor quality, high external dependence, and imperfect resource guarantee system. In recent years, China’s manganese industry has developed rapidly, and China has become the world’s largest consumer of manganese resources. With the growth of new energy market, the contradiction between supply and demand of manganese resources in China will further increase in the future. Based on the actual situation that manganese ore is still in short supply and in great demand in China, in order to ensure the strategic safety of national manganese ore resources and promote the healthy development of China’s manganese industry, this paper puts forward sustainable development suggestions such as formulating long-term supply planning, strengthening overseas layout, promoting capacity cooperation and establishing a diversified security system.

Discussion on genesis process and deep prospecting breakthrough of Luobusa chromitite, Tibet

Abstract:The chromitite bottleneck has been going on for many years in China. In October 2015, Bureau of Land and Resources of Tibet announced the discovery of a 200 million tons of massive chromite deposit in deep exploration at Luobusa in Tibet, which achieved a major breakthrough in China's chromite prospecting, and the direction of finding more chromite deposits in the future was also pointed out. The podform chromite produced in the ophiolitic mantle peridotite is the main source of chromium. The study of podiform chromite mineralization and mantle peridotite is necessary for further finding the chromite deposit and relieve the bottleneck of the chromitite resources in China. Podiform chromite produced in the ophiolite is the main source of chromium and an important strategic resource for China. Research on the genesis of the podiform chromitite and mantle peridotite is necessary for further finding the chromite deposit and relieve the bottleneck of the chromitite resources in China. With the discovery of deep minerals such as diamonds in podiform chromite and mantle peridotites in recent years, researchers have also begun to question the theory of formation of podiform chromite. With the first discovery of 200 million tons of massive chromite orebody, the new understanding that podiform chromite is formed in the depth was raised, and its formation process mainly has gone through four stages. The crust and oceanic crust material of the early subduction to the mantle transition zone (410-660 km) is dehydrated and dismembered, and the heat and fluid produced by the transition zone contribute to the melting of the mantle and the release and aggregation of chromium. The chromitite ore slurry is driven by the mantle plume and is transported to the top of the transition zone for condensation and consolidation. The authors have reached the conclusion that the formation of ophiolites is a mutli-stage process involving subduction of lithospheric slabs into the transition zone, crystallization of chromian spinel and some massive chromitites at depth, incorporation of UHP and highly reduced phases into the chromitites, and entrapment of oceanic lithospheric slabs above subduction zones where they undergo varying degrees of interaction or reaction with MORB melts and SSZ melts. Several large massifs in the western part of the Yarlung Zangbo suture are similar to Luobusa in many aspects. They have experienced the same tectonic setting and the mineralization of podiform chromite, and there is a large prospecting space.

Abstract:Mineral resources are essential to prosperity and security of modern societies. How mineral resources can guar- antee sustainable development of economy in countries, especially those developing countries, has long been a focus of attention of international communities. This paper provides a comprehensive summary for major ad- vance of the research on mineral resources in past decades, and proposes some key issues regarding ore-forming mechanism, exploration and utilization of major and critical mineral resources. On the basis of these aspects, we also identify four priority science issues to be addressed in the future, including (1) mechanism of both metal circulation and extremely high concentration, (2) theories and technologies of prospecting deep-earth resources, (3) investigation of mineral resources in seafloor and polar regions, and (4) efficient, clean and recycling utiliza- tion of mineral resources. It can be expected that new advances in these four issues would tremendously promote the innovation of mineral resource science, and provide scientific and technologic support to meet the demand of mineral resources for human activities and the harmonious development of both mineral-resource exploration and ecological restoration.
Critical Metal Resources in the Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley Metallogenic Belt

Abstract:Critical metals are strategic key mineral resources for global competition, with research on mineralization characteristics and metallogenic regularity attracting attention. The Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley metallogenic belt (MLYB) is a part of the circum-Pacific magmatic belt. Under complex continental dynamic setting, such as the Mesozoic transformation of structural systems and intensive crust-mantle interactions, a large amount of porphyry-skarn Cu-Fe-Au deposits have been formed. During large-scale mineralization processes. critical resources, including Cr, Co, Se, Re, and Te. are produced from these deposits, in addition to bulk metals such as Cu. Ag, Fe. and S-rich ores. These critical metals are urgently needed in China's strategy. Therefore, research should receive emphasis to achieve new breakthroughs. In recent years, large mining companies in the Yangtze River economic belt have paid special attention to the comprehensive use of critical metals. Therefore, studies on critical metals in the belt have important theoretical and economic significance. This paper has systematically reviewed and summarized the research outcomes and literature related to the exploration and research work of critical metals in MLYB and preliminarily investigated the enrichment characteristics of the critical metals in the deposits in the belt. The preliminary investigation indicates that if the dominant metals in skarn deposits differ, the subsequent byproduct critical metals also differ. Most critical metals are hosted in sulfides in these skarn deposits. This paper shows a spatial distribution map of the critical metal deposits. Based on this map, the relationships between the dominant metal and the associated critical metal elements are summarized. Moreover, this paper has reviewed and summarized the deportment and enrichment mechanism of Cr, Co, Se, Re. and Te in the porphyry-skarn Cu-Fe-Au deposits in the belt and clarified the key host minerals and their abundances by referring to the five critical elements. Based on comprehensive analyses of previous studies on critical metals in the belt, we have raised three key scientific points that should be the focus of future studies on related topics. First, the primary research clue about sources and enrichment mechanisms should consider the systematic evolution of the porphyiy-skam Cu-Au deposits in the intracontinental setting. The second is a key question and challenging issue regarding the recovery and comprehensive utilization of the critical metals in specific sulfides. Finally, the full use of microscale to nanoscale lab analyses and related theories about the synthesized host minerals bearing critical metals may provide important evidence that can help interpret the enrichment mechanism of the critical metals. This point should be based on research on the crystallinity relationships and interface correlations between the host and critical metal elements.

Abstract:Chromite is formed in nature in ophiolitic layers and ultrabasic rocks through fractional crystallization. The corresponding mining technologies separate the ore from these ultrabasic rocks, which are considered to be tailings for the process but may be valorized in other applications. The need to utilize this material is due to the large quantities of its production and the special management required to avoid possible secondary pollution. In the present work, the ultrabasic rocks of chromite mining were applied to acid mine drainage (AMD) neutralization. The aim was to increase the technological maturity of the method and promote circular economy principles and sustainability in the mining sector. Ultrabasic rocks were obtained from a chromite mining facility as reference material. Furthermore, an artificial AMD solution was synthesized and applied, aiming to simulate field conditions. According to the results, the sample was successfully utilized in AMD neutralization (pH 7), achieving rapid rates in the first 30 min and maximum efficiency (liquid to solid ratio equal to 8.3) at 24 h. However, the method presented a drawback since Mg was leached, even though the concentration of other typical metals contained in an AMD solution decreased.

Current situation and development trend of titanium metal industry in China

Abstract:Titanium metal and alloy are key materials for technological development, which significantly promote the development of the hightech economy in China. The consumption of high-end titanium materials and the developmental level of the titanium industry are important indexes of a country’s comprehensive power. However, at present, the application amount and level of high-end titanium materials in China are limited by many factors, including the dependence of raw materials on imports, high processing cost, and structural imbalance of products. Based on the characteristics of titanium resources and the current situation of the titanium industry, the whole titanium industrial chain in China should be updated. Improving the quality of raw materials is important to produce low-cost, high-end titanium materials using titanium resources with high calcium and magnesium contents in the Panxi region. In addition, the steel-titanium joint production is a vital step to reduce the processing cost of titanium materials. Moreover, the consumption structure of titanium materials should be completed to expand their application. Gradually implementing these suggestions, the overall level of China’s titanium industry will be greatly improved, thereby rapidly establishing an advanced scientific and technological country.

Abstract:Chromite ore processing residue (COPR), which is created during the chromite preparation process of chromite compounds, is considered hazardous waste because it contains chromium trivalent and chromium hexavalent. Recently, the harmless disposal of COPR has received a lot of research interest. COPR is a type of resource attributable to its abundant content of chromium, iron, aluminum, etc. This article starts from the main sources, properties, and pollution characteristics of COPR. It summarizes the methods and approaches used by scholars in recent years to handle COPR: chemical reduction, dry detoxification, pyrolysis, mineralization, solidification/stabilization, biotechnology, electrochemical methods, and resource utilization, achieving harmless treatment of COPR. Among them, research on resource utilization stands out, not only improving resource utilization efficiency but also reducing environmental pollution. This provides new ideas and directions for our future treatment of COPR.
